forty six series Well Fitch his Shampoo. The sponsor decided to bring Rogues Gallery back without Dick Powe in the summer of nineteen forty seven, and they chose a film star, Barry Sullivan. Sullivan was a very solid working actor who would enjoy some success, particularly later on in television when he would play Ken Thurston in The Man Colbeck's TV series, and would also star in The Horror
Master and The Tall Man. Over Radio. He did fill in for two weeks for Vincent Price when Price was not available to play the role of the saint, and so he took on in eighteen weeks mer series of Rogues Gallery in nineteen forty seven. This is the fourth episode of the eighteen It's called Phyllis Adrian is Missing from June twenty ninth of nineteen forty seven. Laugh awhile, let a song, do you sire? You said stamp so to say,
use your head? Said your head, you said stamn. The F W. Fitch Company presents Barry Sullivan as Brivate Detective Richard Rogue in Rogues Galleries Rouge speaking. You know, in my business it's hard to get ahead,
but so many other people trying to get ahead my head. That is sometimes I think it might be to let them scrape my name off the door before they sizzle it into a headstone, because I'm just a guy who doesn't like to see people get pushed around, myself in particular, and I often wonder if there's any real future for me and a sneak snoop and snitch racket, and so many people don't want me to have one. That was a frame of mind I was in one Saturday afternoon one, Howard Adrian, a well
known mouthpiece, cold to tell me his troubles. Hello, Rogie, this is Howard Adrian. Hey, how are you say? You're just in time? I'm thinking of selling out? Got a wonderful set a law books here. Let you have the cheap never even cut the pages, never had time. My wife is missing. Well she's not here. I just took inventory. You don't understand she's gone time. I'm worried, Rogie. How long have you been gone, Howard? In two weeks? What have you done
to Lokay that nothing at all? Until now? This has got to be between you and me, Rogan. You see it. It's rather Phillis is pretty headstrong, and I've got to move cautiously. Okay, Howard, I think I understand you. Sit tight. I'll be right over and relax, Richard. Rogue will bring her back alive. Yeah, that's what I said. But the way it turned out, I didn't. I paid a call on Howard Adrian. His outer office was empty, and when I ended his
private office without knocking, I found him kissing his secretary. Made a pretty picture suitable for framing. Well, well, now I get it. You buried your wife in the cellar, like Edgar Allan fozy, you could marry your beautiful secretary. You only hired me for a blind like in the Detective story. Cut it out, rogy or attempted humor isn't funny. Yeah, I guess you're right. Sorry, no time for me to go fipping off. All right, this is miss Carbon, Miss Crystal Carbon, Richard Roll.
I'm sorry. Likewise, now, Howard, how about your work just a minute, that'll be all miss Carb the no way, Maybe she can help you. Suppose we may as well as help mister Rode. You see. And it's an old story. I hope we're not boring you, not at all. Well, here's some good news. I may have a line on her already. The elevator operators tells me he took her down from here on the day she disappeared. She was with a tall man with brown muscles. Oh yeah, that would be Nicky Barren. Nicky Barren, I know
him. He used to be mixed up with Rockey Malachesta when they were running the gambling ships off the coast. Good trial for the murder of Pig Muldoon and Fristo gang war, say Howard, didn't you handle Barren's defense at that file? That's right. He must have been clean or you wouldn't have touched them. Thanks, and you're right. That's how I broke my reputation, and the reputation helped. Nicky was acquitted and he stayed clean ever since.
He's doing what doing all right? Apparently operates a small club in the valley. The Mandalay stopped in the sun me the other day, look shop and walked out with your wife. Hey, this is radically there was nothing between missus. Who side are you on? Mis car He's only trying to help Howard. You know your working conditions are so pleasant. I can't see why you want me to find your wife. Why not leave well enough alone? Because Howard wants her back to way to make a clean break, that things
settled once and for all. All that's right. You'll find us so I could lose it legally. She'll give you a divorce, won Hortel? Oh why she doesn't like me? Oh she doesn't like you? No? Does she love you? Cigarette? Thanks? Thanks, Rogie, don't worry about it. Just fine, Phillis and forget the rest. Sure, how I'll remember that. But if I don't forget it, you remind me. Hum
Phillis Atian seemed to advantage like Judge Crayton. She seemed to have rolled a footsteps up behind her, and even her shadow must have been following a wrong blund. My first move in locating it was refreshingly simple. I merely called another private detective and assigned him to check every hotel in town at half my daily feeds. Yeah, I should have been an agent. Then I headed for the Mandalaid. The Mandalaid was lined with woven grass mats and paneled with
bamboo. He should have held hands across the dance floor, and in the middle of it, a girl was trying to shake herself out of a coat of three spain and a surround taster all right without being hit by a flying hip and lade the door of Nicky Barron's office. It was easy money. Laus Adrien was there. Well, well, hello missus Adien, good bye mister Rogue. Why Nicky, that's not a very warm welcome. I make it warmer if you get funny, Snooper. My friends say I am naturally
funny. Maybe we'd make a team. I think you're a wonderful student. I warn't you come shoot? Yeah, wouldn't that be a shade? Okay, rogue, stand up and take it all? Relax? Will you start off like that? What you're gonna do for an encle? I don't shoot snoop clay me alone. I'm in the clear with this joint. Very interesting. Fall back and regroup, Nikki, I'm not interested in you, and then put that suck on your account in case you get that way? Do
you mind get off the floor. It's a new carpet, Missus Adrien, I care about shown off baby. Can't think of anybody I care more about at the moment. Well, Lucky the man is that home? Yeah? The life of the party, that's him. Will you see me when I try on the lamb shades? Missus Adrian's how rum as just one of the thing, says Nicky. Would you step over here a minute? No, a little more this way please? That's good comedy, Team slapsters. Did
you get that wonderful pull you have? Mass I just blow myself up with a bicycle pump. Shall we go? And that's the first act of tonight's graphic adventure from Rogues Gallery. The F. W. Fitz Company is presenting Barry Sullivan as star of this Sunday series bringing you the adventures of private detective Richard Rohogues. In just a moment, we'll continue with our stories. America's

When I walk in on a tender love seeing between Howard Adrian and has set Terry, I couldn't see why he was so anxious for me to locate his missing wife. But I did locate her, and I was ready to take her home. So I had to overcome the objections of one Nicki, baron and proprietor of a mandalaide. I guess Nickie was convinced he because as he lay there on the cop as, he didn't seem to have another word to say.
Well, for a moment, Philosadrian seemed undecided between the horizontal mister Baron and the perpendicular mister Rhode, and he began to smile. I'm not to look that an out of the divine someday Wallace, who just part of life at its best. Yeah, it's given me an idea. We're nice? Were will you and wait for me in the lobby? Well, I don't like to wear out my welcome. I long to bear. When this wiltor snap dragon revived, I'll have something to say to him. The reason for
yours. Shall I here heard? So I was a darling? What else did I do in that silk dressed Philishadrians? Geography was making history. I waited in the lobby and I was just telling the hat check girl to look out for men? Who tell hat check girl to look out for men? When someone tug at my sleeve. I turned around. At first I didn't recognize it without ellipstick Smith. It was Crystal Corbon. Well, well, this Carbon, you're looking a little like a Dresden doll to night thanks to
you look, mister rogue. But then your job, your Thomas's agim. That's all how it's playing you to do. I'll I'll be smart and stop playing with Dynamo. Nicky Barren alone the st kid. You surprise me. What makes you think I'm interested in Nicky Barren because I know you had Deddy Callaham tucking the news take a file this afternoon on the death of pigmal GM and Nicky won't like that. It's a crime to waste those games doing Nikki's
leg work. What's your interest, Crystal? Well? You interest me enough. Why I wouldn't like to see that smile without any teeth? And why Chris, I didn't know you're killing mister rogue. But get Nicki barn and get missus abim back to our husband. Maybe I will. It's just what I'm trying to do, Darling. If people will stop shoving Nikki Baron down my throat, I comes, Fillip, I get to stand. Good boys,
r ready to go back to Poppins. Don't be so easy to get rid of me, I said, I have one more statement to doing about everything I've been trying to do this week. You're important in my blind Look where do I get in? We want to just met? Well, it's complicated. Did you set in? I tell you just smell. I'm up to my master. I'm a pretty business. I'm with a lever. I need the swinging. There along a few more hands without looking at my cards, and I'll fling him a card. I've already got a deal from your
husband. Remember, I'll after your collection on that too, and I'll be bored. Say no more. I'm in Now, who's grave do I have to rob? Not to far on with that list we're staring, of course, But all you have to do is stand in the background and let's we got where we were going at ten twenty five. It was a house on the ocean front near Malibu. Whose places there asking no question? What are you waiting for, lady? No, just looking for the light switch.
Here it is. The place was a man's idea, what a woman would think a man's place. Order looked like lots of copper, knotty pine, big brick fireplace, white baskin rugs, you know, the woods. One another room was sliding glass windows from top to bottom, looking out my private beach and plenty of Pacific. I'd no sooner taste the layout than philos adrians snapped off the lights. He cut it out. I'm sit of the dark. Oh no, don't tell me you're frightened. The pool a little could
be, baby could be. But I just don't like the idea of making mud pies and somebody else's sandbox. Come here, ins down. Do you love the moonlight? It's overlated. It shines on the same thing as the sun does. Baby. Yeah, yeah, I guess there's none of us so perfectly. We couldn't stand the softer focus more ways than one. More ways, let's just stick to one. What's happening? Whose place is this?
It's my uncle didn't answer, and it was right. Then I began to feel that not in my chest, the uncanny vibrations of something about to happen. And from then until it did happen, my heart was on a pogo stick, and my nerves was skipping rope through list bunch of a record cabinet and fumble through a row of flatters until she found the ones who wanted, and pale the cereal strains of the violin until the room. Then and
ghostly mist Is Adrian listened like someone in a dream. She flowed into the chair oppositely and settle herself in it, like a cloud coming to rest on a hill. Recognize d who is it? Evelyn? And a magic violin? No God, because you how? In this composition he wrote, O pretty man, Yeah, come on over here and sit on my sofa. I always sit here when you please. She stands right there, nice with
you always. You always close your eyes. Had anything throws through well, thesic appreciations a wonderful thing, But gunshot crescendos are two models for my taste. I opened my eyes and left to my feet, and that not in my chest pulled tight as a hangman's noose. Philos Adrian still sat where she was sitting. There was still a smile on her face. She still looked good. Yeah, wood and dead. There was a gushing red hole in her throat. The clock said eleven h five. I don't know why.
The first thing I did was knocked the playing arm off that record. I guess it made me nervous. Then I took a quick study around the house. There was no one in the kitchen. The closets are under the bed. I don't seem to have come from close by, maybe from a private beach beyond the big window, so I dived through them. There's nothing out
there but sand, pounding surf and fog. Fog thickest taffy was rolling in off the sea, coming in fast like they do at Malibu, plotting out everything, everything but one shape of the shoreline that didn't look like driftwood. I ain't got my heater and dropped it a sand Hey, yo, stop, women are digging. I'm coming after to give you the first one office tell me I'm meant to like. That's truth, I have got one. You better start sitting bullets here. I make that first one's house. I
started inching toward him. My fingers tumbling on a tiger, ready for a duel on the fog. But he foxed me. He stood up and started waving his arms over his head. So up, okay, fuddy, just hold it like that? How start talking? Who are you? Bred? Heck? Hey, the private snoop? I what you know? No? Why? I'm the guy who hired you, the fine missus alien. You're Richard Grove. Yeah, you're working for me bull It's fun. Yeah, but I said find it, not get her? That her alive? Wait
a minute, you ain't telling me I who else? You won't get sure? No, I won't get sore? He is sure. I seen you. I was watching through the bag windows. She was sitting in the touch with her back to me. She was sitting in the chair facing me. She was listening to the music, and all of a sudden, you'll let her hap us? What another doing some look music? At that time you're making I want to know how you happened every outside that window. I told
you to check hotels from missus aprien. Tonight I find your keeping two windows that belonged to a friend of hers. You'll get around. You're terrific. Tell me a secret. Oh well, well, I found the same registered at the worship pot terrist is Aprien? Howard? How would I if you an Aprien? How would you get it wonderful? How'd you ever figure it out? Listen? If you can't pray for the other guys, what's Turnno?
Okay, keep talking? Well, I keep the telephone calls, and they was all to this spee chairpers She wasn't nun, So I come out looking for her. I looked through the window and I seen it happened? You saw me killer? Huh? Whoa? It was turner dust. Maybe it was too wonderful and you're holding the gun road. Yeah, it's going must to make a mistake. If you thought I did it wanting to go for a cop instead of hiding out here on a bib age, Well,
I didn't want no cops in on the tail. I was gonna tell you when you left, you putting this racket long enough to know that there's there's more, mother, and not telling who's done it? You know what? You put the hooks in me for a hushing. Well we all make mistakes, rugs here, but you're overdoing it. Okay, bird, let's go inside the house. I'm calling hamas sure, somebody's gonna be sorry. All right, rog got that here and race You're all right? First, I'm
sorry. Okay, Baron, this makes you dealer, My boy Rose, hand over those papers. Amen. Oh I might have known it'd be papers. Well. I hate to say this because I know what will happen. But what papers? Oh that's did it happened? If you want it bad enough about missus Adrian for Oh now you're telling me I didn't who else I thought you did? No? Wait a minute, I just walked into this. I found her that way. I'll try to hang it on me. Don't mind him, so I hang it on anybody who comes along. It
was just create a business associated you're can talk in front of him. Okay, you have benefit. Createst dame tried to shake me down tonight. As supposed to meet her at twelve o'clock with ten grand and hush money. When I walked in, she was like that, go ahead, tell him where I come in. Oh sure, I was having trouble raising the dough. So she tells me to night. She's taking a rogue into the deal with it. There's a smart Chamas like him would know how to pedal that kind
of dope. The rogue here couldn't wait for the split, so he cut her out with a slug. Claps it up, promoter. Oh but one thing, what was he shown? I don't mind telling you now. I got nothing to lose beside, you two have a murder rep of your own to settle between you. Okay, I got a little careless once up in Frisco, was tossing letter on for a bluff and a gent named Pig Muldoon stepped in a one and called me. Oh, I was very sorry, but it couldn't have happened to a worse wreck. Sure, I remember,
but I thought you was cleared. Yeah, it was. There was just one little technicality. I was guilty, Howard. Adrian didn't know that when he took the case. No, not when he took the case he didn't. But before the fire was over he did see. The jury was already out when a guy called Meathead Maxwell paid him a call. He was the boy who was with me at the time. It wasn't trying to finger me. He just wanted a little powder money to blow down before anyone caught up
with him and started asking questions. You mean Adrian made a deal with Hell stace evidence. Yeah, he probably wouldn't have, but the jury was already out and he built up to the beautiful case. But he still didn't like it. No, he got me off all right, but he also got a statement from the meathead and he's been holding it over my head, making me walk the chuck. That was what was in the paper to catch on
quick kid. But I was doing all right, you seem until missus Adrian gets her miss on the safety deposits seem all in the line of her wifely duties, going through his pockets one night. Next day she opens a box and pulls out my pack and starts in selling it back to me. I can't see your doing. And she's doing all right, Ain't she just doing missus as Yeah, but she's not being just missus Adrian. She's being a patron of the arts. I'm aside, sponsoring concerts here and there, and
I am the angel. Either I angel her boyfriend Egosky or she's fade drop muldoon nice bitter. I thought she'd like it all right now roads on it huh No, no hot feeling. If you're still telling I'm still buying If the killing that dame all I got to you was congratulates. Okay, you put it that way. Did you bring the money with him? Joe? So I got it right here, let's see it. Yeah, it is run here if a bird. He's not so tough at the second time tonight

Fitch des Moines six Iowa. That's Fitch des Moines sixth Iowa. It is spelled f I TC, and I'll back to Barry Sullivan as private investigator Richard Rogue in rope gallery. I woke up with a lump the size of a hat on my head. Both my playmates were gone, Hecked with a ten grand and Baron probably after him with a grudge, and me with nothing but a corpse. I'd have a swell time explaining. I dragged myself to the phone and called Betty Callahan, a newspaper guys who sometimes knows the answers.
I told her what happened and asked her to check the alibis of three other people, Crystal Corbin, Howard Adrian, and the violinist, even the GHOSTI then I spent the next twenty minutes trying to figure out one for myself. I still didn't have one when I tell phone Rang it was Betty. At the time of the murder, Howard Adrian had been making a speech in front of seventy lawyers in a downtown hotel. Ivana Gerski was in San Diego giving
a concert. He only had two thousand witnesses away. The olibis were stacking up. I figured Crystal Corbin would have been taking a bath in the Hollywood Bowl, but knows he'd been with Howard. Betty said she'd notified him and he was on his way out. So I had to have some answers ready fast. And then I saw it, he answered in front of me. All the time, Phyllis Adrian. The bullet had entered her throat at an
up angle from somewhere in the floor. From then, I traced the possible trajectory of a slug to its point of origin and found myself looking at a wall guess heater with an aluminum grill work. I went over to it and heilt down, twisted some knobs, and removed the grill. There the wire to the pipes inside was a twenty two target pistol. A little further back slam to another pipe with a silver tuning fork. Two fine top of wires
ran from the tips of the fort with the trigger of a gun. The certammer of a gun had been worked on with a file to make it respond to a hair trigger touch. I didn't have to test it to know that the tuning fork would vibrate with a crescendo in a Drowski's concerto, The Concerto of Death. We got your restest as we could. What happened? It's Betty, you don't I think you'd want to sort the focus. But I don't understand. How could it happen? Would you right here as you killer
Howard? Death by a remote control commits murder on qu to a musical note? Good lord? But who? Why didn't you tell me your wife was in love with another man? But how could I? I never knew. Y're sure of that, of course, I'm sure. What are you driving at? Rogue? Well, somebody knew whoever plan of this gadget knew every detail, as she always sat in that chair in that exact spot whenever she listened to him play. Who could have known that except the other man?
Yeah, that's a nactual thought, Crystal. I think it's what we were meant to think that. It isn't the answer. You know the answer. I know a lot of answers. Baby, Now, did you ever tell Howard you were Nikky Baron's sister? Your old newspaper files to the trial. Baby, you changed your name and the color of your hair, but you were still Nikki's sister, and you couldn't hide that. She wasn't trying to hire it if I knew it all the time. You can't persecute the girl
because of her block trying too. I'm just saying she made a play for you so you could get her hand on those papers you were holding over a brother's head and destroy them. Right, Crystals, you're not trying to say that. I'm not saying anything. I'm just clearing a record. No, Crystal didn't kill your wife, Howard, because you did me. Well,
do you realize what you're saying? What possible motive could I have? Well, I've got my choice of several, but most of them involved blackmail and legal loopholes, and you would have had a neat way of getting around those. So I two good old fashioned jealousy, the one thing you wouldn't have known how to handle. You must be out of your mind. How could I be jealous of something I didn't even know about? But you did know it, Howard? And the very fact that you want to such pains to
conceal your knowledge as the tip of that couldn't be. Doesn't make sense. Howard loves me. You know you saw, I saw, I was meant to see. The guy's a lawyer. Baby, you were exhibit A, and I was going to be a star with us. You're skating gun very thin, nice world. What makes you think I knew a little guy named Bert Heck, a guy I hired to help me find your wife. Only he found her too fast, and he isn't that good. I figured right then he'd been keeping an eye on her for a long time by somebody else.
But why me? You? Because he said you? Howard? Who would a jealous husband hires a detective to follow his wife? Yeah, extra ports must have made good reading all the unimate details about the private concerts and a special how old that's closed enough. I'm sorry. Put on a gun. Yes, yes, I'm really sorry. Rogue to you. It's you. I'm sorry for how I told me that nobody feels sorry for me,
not me, not Howard Adrian. I don't need it. How you, Crystal, You you try to get close enough to hurt me, just like all the rest, but you never could. Nobody gets close to me. Nobody knows what makes me take in here? Even for the cart room pay you finished here? Yes, I know, but so are you old? So are you if it happens in for you? I well, you're just too smart to live. Goodbye, mister roge or an instant. I stood
expecting to fall dead, but I didn't. Instead, Howard jerked, arrested, fun around like a ballet answer, and crumpled to the floor body again. I got it. The tuning force was still attached, the gun was an automatic, and Crystal's high pitched scream had set the thing in most in a second time. Howard hadn't thought of that when he stood in the line of fire, and when he did think of it, it was too late. He was killed, as you might say, by his own ingenious hand.
Well, that wrapped it up. It is a good Hexul who prompt appearance on the scene of a crime that at start of the hunts I played against Howard's alibi just a little too coincidental. The police snared Hecked crossing the border to Mexico, and they picked up Barren while he was boarding a plane for Las Vegas. Hex's original thought was the blackmail Howard. That's why he
didn't tell me. Howard had hired him three months before the spy on his wife, but the ten grand was quicker, so he took that instead. Oh yes, the papers. We never did find any papers. I kind of like to think that they didn't exist. You know what I mean. You had just heard Barry Sullivan as five A Detective Richard Rogue in this week's

Well, I have to say, quite honestly, not quite as good as the Dick Powe version, and that's vain generous. Not only was Sullivan's performance of Rogue quite different from Powell's, but the writing
felt a little bit off. Of course, if there were more episodes, Sullivan might grow as at least a passable private detective show, but clearly a lot more generic than a role that was really best associated with Dick Powell. Well, there actually is one more version of Rogue's Gallery. This one will take us into the nineteen fifties. I'll tell you about it next week.
