All right now from the LA Times, he thinks Dave Roberts should get a contract extension. We welcome on Dylan Hernatez and Dylan, thanks for jumping on on this Monday. No, thank you for having me on. Okay, let's start with what you wrote, Dave Roberts. Last next year will be the final year of his deal, and you're saying they should extend him right now. Yeah, I mean, I just don't see him going anywhere.
Frankly, you know, I think that if they don't win the World Series, it's going to be kind of what we saw, you know, last year and the year before where they just kind of didn't have the starting pitching
right now, they could address that between now and the trade deadline. But you know, I think that's probably more likely the scenario than him just kind of you know, you know, just detonating the whole thing, you know, And in that case, why kind of subject him and the team to kind of the speculation that we all know is going to come come October? Right? I mean, and this is kind of the same story every October.
You know, it's usually the blame finds a way, you know, the ball always finds the ways Kershaw's hands, you know, in those certain moments. You know, so usually Kershall takes those share of the blame and then it's Roberts, you know. And I just think, you know, if again, if if the focus is really to win a world Series,
why not just kind of eliminate that distraction, right, you know. And I know it's like a different sport whatever, but you know, we just saw in the Copa America with the US men's national team, you know, with Greg Berhalter and the speculation over his future. You know, you can't tell me that that didn't affect that team, And so I'm just kind of thinking, you know what I mean here, I mean, they've had this guy for ten years now, they already know what they're going to get out
of him. You know, you look at just kind of all the problems that he kind of smooths out over the course of the season. I mean, a lot of stuff has happened this year, right, and the fact that like we're here, you know, in July and kind of everything seems normal and okay, everything's going to kind of go to the playoffs. I think you speak. I do think really speaks to his ability to kind of manage teams and situations. All right, So let me play devil's advocate,
and first in theory, I agree with what you're saying. Okay, so we'll acknowledge that. Now, let me play devil's advocate. They spent the money, they have Otani, they're all in, they signed John Momoto. Everything is geared toward them winning a World Series, not getting to the playoffs and eliminate it. And also not well, you know, he didn't have the pitching. This is it and if it doesn't work, somebody's going to get it because somebody has to get it. And I believe that they may
take a weight and see approach. I don't think they want to move Dave Roberts at all, I think they want him to be here for as many years as he wants. Ten more years. But on the other hand, Dylan, if they keep coming up short, somebody's got to get it,
you know what I mean, Yeah, I do. And you know, and this is where again the the Otani contract is so important, right, is because the you know, there's a clause in his deal that says if Mark Walter, the owner, or if Andrew Friedman, the president of Baseball Ops, go anywhere, he can then opt out of his contract, you know, And so that kind of protects Friedman, right, And you know, I do think there has been you know, over the years, right, you can kind of go year by year, and Okay, who's more
at fault between kind of Friedman and Roberts And I do think over the last couple of years, right, it's been more a function I think them getting eliminated up like roster construction. Right. So, if anything, you're probably looking at pre Now I'm not saying that free you know, I would sign
Freedman to a lifetime contract. Don't get me wrong. I don't think he should go anywhere, but you know, I'm also kind of not of this, like, Okay, well, they just kind of need a change stace to change things because a lot of you know, I know, people look at that one point whatever billion spent one I think it was one point three billion spent over the off season, and it's not you know, they're just too many positions in a baseball team, right, you know, it's twenty
six man active roaster. And you know the reason that bill got up that high, it was just kind of certain market forces there, right. And that said, for a team that has its high a payroll, this is a team with a lot of gaps, you know. And I don't think again, you know, take down my moto, right, I mean, he got the three one hundred and twenty five million dollar contract. I don't think that's Dave Roberts's fault that the guy's shoulders started barking when he started bringing
sliders all of a sudden, right. And so to me, these are
not Dave Roberts problems. These are kind of you know, again, it's you know, I mean, frankly, if you're going to look at something, you know, maybe the farm system, right, I mean, you know, despite them kind of having hyped up their farm system as much as they have over the years, you look at it, it's been Walker Bueler, and it's been Will Smith, and you know, some role players that sure, you know, might help out on a particularly given season, but
the production hasn't quite been there, right, And that's what's kind of made I think the team go out and have to spend big money on you know, I mean, right, I mean they had Corey Sieger, who's a Home Crown guy. Once he kind of you know, grew into free agency, they obviously let him go because he got too expensive. Now you pivot to Freddie Freeman, right, and you know which is you know, that's a nine figure commitment, right, instead of having a guy coming up with
the minor league. So, you know, I just think that there are areas probably need to point two outside of the manager. And again, you know, I go and I look at like, you know, I look
at teams like the Mets. I look at teams like the Padres, you know, where you kind of see like one thing kind of go wrong and next thing, you know, this thing turns into a snowball, which turns into an avalanche, and all of a sudden, the team, you know, gets off track whatever it is, right, And now you know look, the roster obviously has a lot to do with the Dodgers success over the last decade, but I also think Dave Roberts has something to do with that.
Don't disagree, as a matter of fact, I do agree, but you understand public perception and there will be an incredible sense of frustration if they don't get farther than they've been. And since Andrew Freeman can't get it and Mark Walter's not going to get it, ultimately somebody will have to get it because I think the fans will be they'll be unhappy, they'll be uncomfortable, and even though they are wrong and who they're pointing the finger at, they're
going to want somebody to pay for this. And I'm not saying it's gonna happen after this year. I'm not saying that, But I really think that's the deal what I extend them, sure, because I get what you're saying. I don't know if the fan base gets that, Dylan, Yeah, I don't either. And that's why actually, like I would go ahead and extend them now, right, is because I do think that, you know, right, I mean, I mean take this like I'm gonna random Wednesday.
You know, you bring in a particular reliever, that guy gives it up all of a sudden, everybody's calling up the postgame talk show saying like, why did Roberts bring that guy in? I mean, things just kind of happen, right, and the manager's always the guy that people going at, you know, right for blame. And I just kind of think that if the organization comes down and says, look, this is off the table now, right, We're not this guy's not going to go anywhere. We're
committed to him. I just think a lot of that talk will subside. Right now. People might still sure, they will be frustrated obviously if the team doesn't win, you know, but I think it will probably lead to a more honest assessment of what's going on other than just kind of, you
know, having a sacrificial land because whatever it is. You know, Let's say they fall short this year and like, look, as of right now, the way they're constructed right now, you know, kind of the health issues that they're having, my guess is that they right, they're not positioned
at this moment to win the World Series. Now that said, they're also not that far from it, right, I mean, they could just be one or two trades away, you know, one or two moves away from that place, and you know, to kind of tear stuff down that unnecessarily I don't think is particularly productive. I would kind of, okay, again, take an honest assessment of where you are right now, what do we have to do, What are the sacrifices that we have to make to address
those needs? And go ahead and do that. And because ultimately, you know, the results are going to view what determines fan satisfaction, right right, and you know next year right, stay to fall stroke. This year, you address those one or two things, you win. Next year, everybody's going to be fine about it. You know. So that's kind of the route that I would choose personally, you know, and I agree with
you. I understand those forces that are there, But to me, that's the argument for why you should extend them, right, it's it's the organization telling the public this guy's not this is our guy, he's not going anywhere. You know. You talked about assessing where you're at, and this is about the time where Andrew Friedman sits back and assesses where the team's at. You said, a couple of moves will make the difference. What are those
moves. Yeah, I mean, you know, obviously if they can get if they can find a way to get close shapes on the White Sox, that that takes care of a lot, right, because now you have an age to pair with you know, again, the last couple of starts for Glass, now I've been a little bit shaky, but let's assume that the you know, he can get through the year fine, and you know he'll be the guy you want him to be. You want that other starter really, uh, you know, to be there to you know, to kind
of anchor that lineup or that rotation. Sorry, you know, and now, look the price is going to be high, right, this is a picture I believe with two more years of club control after this, this is going to cost you your top prospects. You know. But again, kind of go back, you know, I mean, right, Gavin Lux, you know, a few years ago could have gotten you that type of guy. Right, they decided like, let's hold on to him, and you know, he's just kind of a guy on the roster at this point.
You know, I think you know, a year ago, you know, Diego Kartaia was kind of the big guy, you know on the you know, in their farm system. You know, since then, he's kind of had back issues, right, and that's not to say anything about his town, but things just kind of happen, right, And so that to me is kind of the thing that they have to kind of figure out here, is Okay, you know, do we kind of put in these prospects who
again could make our lives easier down the road. But then again, you look at kind of their success rate with these things over the last decade, it hasn't been great, you know, And so to me, that's kind of the thing here, you know, And again I'm with you on this in terms of, look, they spent them a ton of money. They're kind of designed to win. Now, you know, Tawny's thirty best freeman
are even older than that that windows closing. I do think they need to be pushing all in over these next couple of years to make something happen. Yeah, one hundred percent, all right, So you would you may have to give up your top prospect and probably somebody from the Major league ross terra. I would think, like a lux or somebody like that that's not going
to be overly expensive but can play every day for the white Sox. So now we talk about the picture, what other needs do they have in your opinion, Yeah, you know, I mean if they can, if they can add another bat obviously to kind of maybe extend that lineup a little bit. You know, I'm kind of thinking, you look around, maybe a guy like Grandia ros Arena might be available. Now again, he's gonna he's gonna cost you something, right, you know. But that said, I
think they have some attractive pieces, you know. And the one thing I'll say this about the Dodgers, the one thing that done a very good job of is the guys they've traded. None of them have really come back to hurt them, right in terms of, like you know, with the exception of your Dann Alvarez, who is traded within like a month of them signing him out of you know, out of Cuba. But everybody else, right, they seem to kind of know, Okay, this is the guy.
You know, I'm sure he could be a major leaguer, but he's not going to be a big star. And to me, those are kind of the questions that they need to ask, you know, Like, to me, frankly, like a guy like Bobby Miller should be on the table, right, I mean, great, great arm talent. I'm personally not convinced that he's going to ever throw strikes. Convinced, you know, consistently. Now, maybe they might think better, they might think differently, you know,
but they know the makeup of the guy. You know, they have a better idea. And to me, if I'm the right, with guys like that, that they have to make a determination on. Right, this guy looks attractive, you know, he obviously has a lot of tools. He looks attractive to other teams, you know, but if you kind of think that there might be a reason that, right, he won't like to that potential. That's the guy that you need a deal. Oh no, see, I wouldn't move him until he got hurt. I thought he was
lights out. I thought he could be a staff as. Yeah, I mean he's certainly right. He had to. He has the tools for it. And you know, honestly, that's probably as good as you know, to borrow like a football term. Right, that's as good as as arm talent that I've ever seen, you know. I mean it's the easiest hundred that I've seen, uh, since I've been around the Dodgers. Uh,
that said again, I'm not so totally sold on this yet. Right, I'm not sure that the he's ever going to gain kind of consistency with the secondary stuff, you know, And I totally get right and again, you know, and that's again why I'm not a GM here. Maybe, right, maybe trading him is a mistake, and maybe he does go become right, because this is a guy who has the potential to be for sure one of the best pitchers in baseball. But that's also why he's going to have
great trade value, you know. And my guess is that, you know, you make a deal for a guy like Cliche, maybe that's the type of guy that you're going to have to throw in, you know, to get the guy who is that star. Now, uh, let me toss this name into the mix. And I don't know how much value he would command given what happened Walker Buehler. Yeah, that's probably not a you know, I think, right, I mean, he's not Yeah, I don't
think there's a ton of value there. I mean, because he's in a walk year, so he's basically you know, for any team that gets him, he's going to be a rental. Right, So you just you're going to have him for the end of the year. I think, you know, if you're the Dodgers at this point, there's probably more value in just kind of holding on to him and hoping that he can kind of figure things
out. You know. I guess he's in Florida right now working with some private pension coaches, and maybe you can catch like lightning in a bottle and that he might be able to help you a little bit in October. I do think it'd be tough again for any team that's like a seller, right, You're always trying to get stuff for the future, so you know, taking on Buehler's salary and you know, not getting much production at this point
probably doesn't really fit the objectives of those types of teams. All right, Dylan, appreciate you jumping on. Thanks so much for the time. No, thank you for having me on what Rodney extend Dave Roberts Now, I think so, you know, it's one thing too, you know, to kind of wait and see be on the last year of your deal. But I think with all of and I know you know, there's a half of Dodger fans or a big percentage of Dodger fans that that don't like like Dave
Roberts for whatever reason. But in this year, with all pressure pack and Dave Roberts doesn't hit, he doesn't pitch, he doesn't he doesn't get injured, he doesn't He's not the one on the I l and have to deal with all that. I just think that, and I said this before that, don't put all the eggs in one basket this year. Give him, give him, give him a couple of years to make this whole thing work. You've got old Tony, You've got Yosha Noble, you got Mookie,
you got Freddy from multiple years. Let Dave get a couple of three of those years under his belt and see what happens. But not just after one year, with all of the pressure, all of the things that can go on. It still has to be chemistry with the team. Just because you're bringing new guys that are stars doesn't mean it's gonna work automatically right away. All right, You just wanted to meet the Pittsburgh Pirates, that's all, that's all. Fred Rogan, Rodney Pete a sports Hey, big news.
We should have mentioned this right off the top. Oh no, this is our bad I mean, probably one of the biggest occurrences of this year in sports will happen tonight, and we did not mention it. So apologies to all, Oh lord, my apologies. It's the one thing that's going to
turn everything around, the magic bullet. What's that one thing that if we had this one thing, it's all gonna go our way, That one thing that we did not mention, Rodney, And you know what, it's on you as much as it's on me, So you got to take some of the blame here too, Okay, okay, wearing this thing together, Fred, I'm in it. What's the one thing? Oh lord, the man is back. The man is back. You know what the man is No Anthony Rendon. Anthony Rendon is back. You had me all going crazy like
ooh he talking about this is all impromptu Anthony Rendon. What he's talking about? The man is back. Anthony Rendon is back. Oh he's back tonight, He's back. They play Texas. I'll tell you what matter if he's back, Fred, you know that it's never been a matter. If he's back, is it? How long is he back? For? Right? Well, and that's the question, So look at it like this for now,
he's back. If you're an Angel fan, save up your money for playoff tickets, because he's back and this is going to turn their whole season around. And for him, I mean, this is the start of something big. This is it. Sure there have been some bumps. Sure, there have been some bumps. But he's back and tonight will change the course of history. That's it. That's it, that's it. He's healthy. He's back in the lineup tonight. Oh, he's back in the lneup in
the light up tonight. Not only in the lineup, he's leading off there, but the first batter of the game, Anthony Rendeau leading off, ladies and gentlemen, leading off for the Angels. He was he number. I don't even know his number anymore. He used to be six or something like that, leading off for the Angels. Anthony Rendeaut. The crowd goes, ooh, he's still playing. Oh he's back, Lord back tonight. All right, now, let's do this, and we don't wish bad on anybody,
We really don't. Does he make it till the end of the year? Is that a question? Statement? No? Does he make it to the end of the year. If you had to go to Vegas, right and they said, somebody said, Freddie, here's what I'm a gift to you. I'm a gift you one hundred thousand dollars. Okay, here's the only stipulation. You can't spread it around. You can't go play craps or roulette or blackjack. You can't even, you know, bet on any other
sporting events uifah. You can't bet on the COPA Cups that are happening right now, can't bet on Summer League, can't bet on cricket, can't bet on soccer, can't bet on soccer, can't bet on horse racing, can't bet on anything. The only bets you have it has to be Freddie right and all or nothing. Bet with your one hundred thousand dollars right, So there's no anything. You can't head you bet. You can't hedge it. You can't say I only put two thousand dollars down. You got a hundred
grand I'm giving you, But you gotta be all in. Does Anthony Rendon finish the season? Where are you putting that hundred grand? Freddy? I'm gonna say he makes it? What Kevin? Kevin? I know we record every show, and I know we've got it all in the can and we'll have this for the podcast for those who wants to listen and go back and listen to the show, because you put it up at the moment we're off. You have him on record saying he makes it. I think he makes
it. Wow, nobody will take that. Where does this stroke of faith and Anthony Rondault come from? Fred, Because history is not on your side on this. I just want to here's I started thinking about it. And we don't have just five games left, Fred, we haven't even made it to the All Star break yet. But here's here's my thinking. That's why I pause for a second. The All Star break is right around the corner,
right, Okay, so he'll be off then. Then he's got a little less than half the season to make it, and I think he will. I think he will make it. Under what rationale, under what research, under what history, under what stipulation, precedent, anything would lead you believe that this man would make it healthy through the rest of the season. Okay, Well, he's had time off, so he's got to be in good shape. That's an understatement. He's been off for a while, so
got to be in good shape. And really he didn't even really do much this year before he got hurt again, So you gotta figure that he's already used that up for this season. He's already used up in the odds, is what you're saying, right, I'm just saying he'll make it. So all right, basically, he will make it through a season. Counting tonight, there are seventy one games left in the Angel season. So how many games would he have to play to hit that qualification of quote unquote staying healthy
the rest of the season. He's not gonna play all seventy one. Nobody does that. Seventy one. I give him ten. No, No, I'm saying I'll give him. I'll give him ten games off, ten off. So I would say he has to play sixty one games in order to qualify. So, Fred, are you confident that Anthony Rendon is going to play sixty one of the seventy one games remaining on the Angel schedule? That's the question, Okay, But I have to look at it a little differently,
or maybe it's the same you tell me. I'm saying, from this moment on through the rest of the season, he will not miss one game due to injury. Oh, that's what I'm saying. I even gave you a break, and he didn't even take that break. No, I said, he's gonna make it so that means he cannot be injured for the rest of the season. I mean, now, Fred injured could be like his knee was a little sore today, so we're gonna sit him down, but
we're not putting him on the injured list. He'll be back tomorrow. Okay, that is technically missing a game due to injury. All right, let's do this. He cannot appear on the injured list. Okay, whoa wow? Even going that far? Right, Well, because Kevin makes a valid point, Hey, my knee sore, right, take tonight. I'm giving you those giving you those ten games, Ron's just giving you the gamest I
was giving you the games just in case that happens. I was giving you ten games to say, maybe he's sore back issue, he didn't sleep well the night before, he's gonna miss tonight's game. And you get ten of those. But you're not even taking that. You're saying he won't even appear on the injured list of the seventy one games they got left. Correct,
That's that's the bet. I will I will play because remind me, Kevin, never ever ever in life, in the history of my life, my kid's life, my grandkid's life, whoever comes, you know, behind me, never ever go to Vegas, Atlantic City, any kind of reservation, Marongo, Yama Va, anywhere with Fred Rogan noted. All right, well, listen, I'm very comfortable in my bet for one hundred grand he will not appear on the injured list for the rest of the season. What makes
you so confident for that, love averages? If I'm love averages, it's a wild card. He's got to be healthy eventually, is that what it is. That's why I'm looking at it. Yeah, he's got it. It can't happen again. So now we'll see. This is good. We have a bet. But you doubled down. You didn't even take the ten games. I was given you no because that would be unfair. I said, he's not gonna yet hurt, so he cannot go on the injured list. If he does not appear on the injured list between now and the end
of the season, I win the bet. If he goes on for one day, I've lost, or doesn't play. No, he just can't go on the injured list when healthy doesn't play. He can't be a healthy scratch. Yes, or you say he can be a healthy scratch. He just asked to avoid a stint on the injured list. Is what your says it? That's it, that's the bet, all right, all right, all right, save it. I'm very comfortable in this, very comfortable. We're going to have a tracker up and we don't put up in the studio attract
the rendon't tracker day fifteen and he's still in the lineup. We gotta do that, Kevin. That'll be great, o. God, it starts tonight. Jesus, you're not gonna last a week. All right, all right, let's bring on now a Victor break with the Daily Haikup and victod afternoon. He's on Rendon watch. But has he ever run with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain? Fred Rogan, Hello, Vic, I've not. I know you're talking about the Tour de France, but we can't forget the running
of the bulls every year. Cannot what are the summer rituals the bulls run away from him? Robnie peach you damn right, and I would never ever ever run with them damn bulls? Have you ever seen a black man run from the bulls? And I don't think I am rare very rare very rare. We don't mess with the wild animals. One reason well, he and Lauren are raising a young bull in little all of them O N think.
I come on now, so let me get this straight. There's an animal who's in its very nature is to chase down its prey at a very high level of speed, and you want me to run from that? Sounds like a very smart investment on my part. An animal that's faster than you correct, yes, bigger, stronger than you, yes, with the weapon and its horns, and you want me to run away from that and be safe from arm And this is fun? How exactly ask coming away would have?
I good? You're right in very narrow streets, those cobblestone streets of Pamplona. And of course you got the the white neckerchief, or you can wear it around your head and you'll run a white neckerchief that you could wear around your head like a bandana, exactly like a white fabric. There's usually a fabric with the runners, but they're not going to protect you from a you know, a charging bull. It's it's a right of passage, Fred, It's a right passage for who and for a lot of people. I'd rather
not pass I'll just stay where I am. I'm good. I don't need that passage. Right. He is no ball in a china shop. Every musical cut is carefully chosen with precision and love. Roddy Fossio, don't get god by the bull, y'all the wacky beast, how king flavor now, y'ah, Dodgers take the series from Milwaukee. What a sensational first, Vic, I have to talk about the Pittsburgh pirate than before we get to the
Dodgers. We'll do that. Come on, let's break it back, Rodney p. Fred Rogan Vic the Brick Jacobs on a Monday, July eight Come on, now, did you hear the story of drunk man in Pittsburgh stole a yacht, stole a yacht, but it wouldn't start, so it kind of ended up just in the harbor somewhere. Police came in. Guy's drunk. There's food all over the place. They said, what are you doing? The guy said, well, I wanted to meet a Pittsburgh pirate. So I stole this shot. Who knew? Yeah, it turns out the
guy gives him a name. He stole a homeless guy's identity. Oh my god. So then he was portrayed as a homeless guy. Then when they looked at it a little more, they realized that the guy Gilligan on his little ship Killigan, Killigan, you called him. Yeah, turns out that he gave the police the wrong name and he has a warred out in Minnesota for drug and theft charges. That was the guy that wanted to meet a Pittsburgh pirate. Did he think? Do you think they were real pirates?
I'm not sure, but he wanted to meet once. So we got in a boat. That's bizarre stuff out of Pittsburgh. Fred, Well, you know, the pulse of the world beats within our show, Vic, we have an obligation and a responsibility exactly. It resonates. Yes, I'll tell you who was resonating was Will Smith? This weekend America's Catcher, America's All Star. How about the three homers in one game on Friday? Oh yeah, fourth Doctor Catcher to slog three in one game, Gray Campy, of
course, Roy Campanello, Mike piazza and there's money. Gundal, you're telling me the Brewers. William Contreras is a better catcher. He is the all star starter over Will Smith. I demand the probe. You enjoy those the prob Yeah, how about the next game? Will Smith? On Saturday, Homers is first at bat, four consecutive at bats, four straight home runs. First Dodger to supremely slug like that since Elti ton Adrian Gonzales like nine years ago. H So give it up for Will Smith and all the Dodger
roll stars. Yes, six Dodger roll stars going to Texas and a happy birthday weekend to old tiny sign. Yes. Do you see Altani's box scorer on Saturday? Right, He hits number twenty eight, so hits a home run, he hits a triple, He steals a base, two walks, is hit by a pitch, two runs better than two runs scored plus Otani nached on the chef Marito Japanese Mexican treat the ponzu Asado fries in the cantina in the right field level of Dodger Stadium. Wait a very rare box office.
The bare box score. The chef chef Merito Japanese Mexican what treat It's called the ponzu Asada fries Pontu limited time only at Dodger Stadium. They were a big hits available at the Tacoia at Dodger Stadium plus the cantina in the right field level. Sounds like big Did you try him? I had the taste. I've got glowing reports.
