Radio app. Stop fooling around. We need to be with you every single day. Dodgers playing at the stadium tonight. We'll get into that in a bit. Let's walk. Come in now the Saltier. Our friend Adam Auslin. Adam, how are you. What's up, Freddie? Thanks for being sick last week. Appreciate your big dog. Yeah, Adam, I'm sick. Somebody's got to fill in, Adam says, I know, just the guy who is it him? I was produce it. I had a little bit of a little bit of juice. Hey, Adam, did you get
a double paycheck as well because you produced too as well? Oh, we could talk about that off the air. Rod ye come on now, Martin hooking my man up. I appreciate you. Yeah, Rodney, you know where we work. Why would you even ask that question? I know, I know you got to throw it out there sometimes though, my man. It's time to move on from this subject, all right. So adam NBA free agency, Uh, we're gonna do Lakers. Then we're gonna do Clippers
and Paul George. But Lakers first. Does nobody want to take their money? What money? How much do they have to play with? They haven't signed Lebron James yet. You don't know how much money they're gonna have. Are they gonna be a second Apron team? I know they don't want to be. But look at it this way. When it comes to the Lakers' salary cap. I did a deep dive recently. I talked to the Duke of Sports. No. I looked at it and I saw that, Okay,
they're about thirty six million dollars. Just for reference here, because it's really not that hard to understand the new salary cap situation. So the cap is at one forty, the first apron is at one seventy eight, the second aprons at one eighty eight. Once you get over one seventy, you're
in the luxury tax. You know what that means. You start getting hit hard, like Steve Balmer having to pay one hundred and fifty million dollars in luxury tax money last season because they went thirty six million dollars over the calf. But the Lakers right now the thirty six million to thirty eight million underneath the first apron. But they haven't paid Lebron James. He just made forty eight million, forty nine million dollars last season, so if he does take
a pay cut, it is conceivable. And I gotta give my man Rodney credit, because he pointed this out last week. I didn't think it would matter because I thought, oh, the Lakers, I mean, they must spend money. They're probably way over the calf. Foolish of me to think something like that, the Lakers spending a ton of money. They weren't already
over the calf. They're not right now. And if Lebron took twenty million dollars or something around there, they might have eighteen to twenty million more dollars to play with, plus the full mid level exception. That's thirteen million dollars plus the bi annual exception that's another five million dollars, so it is significant. If Lebron does end up taking that pay cut, it will really help
out the Lakers. But he says, if I'm gonna do that for you, you better make sure to go out there and get somebody for me.
And I understand that. Why not put pressure on the franchise. I don't hate that, Fred, Oh absolutely, you know if I'm gonna take that pay because it better be worth our worth, mine and our while for me to do that, how much of a wrench did it throw into uh to the Lakers with these guys opting in d Low and Readish and those guys opting in and saying, Okay, I'll take this because there's not a market out there for me. And people are saying, well, he did that because
it's a you know, a sign and they can trade him. He's like, I don't know if the trade market is great for d Lo there. Adam, No, I'm with you. I didn't expect that. I don't think anyone did. After bowing out once again, the way he played against the Denver Nuggets in the first round, you felt like it was inevitable. He was no longer going to be a Laker. But if he can't get around you know, eighty million dollars over four years or anything like that.
I mean in the market, it may have just dried up on him. So yeah, they could trade him. Who wants him? Do they have to attach a pick to get rid of him? Is it going to be like the Chicago Bulls who apparently are dangling Zach Levine, who has injury issues. I do like him as a player, but the rumor is they got to give a first round pick just to get rid of that contract. Now
it's still an expiring deal after this year. The eighteen million that de Loo makes, I'm assuming somebody, if you pair that with a second round pick, will do the deal, especially because people are talking about DeMar derozen with the Lakers. Well, he's an unrestricted free agent. If it's a sign in trade, he's doing Chicago a solid to get something for him. Would they take de Lo as a rental for one year because you know he's coming
off the books. I think there's something that out there that's possible. But yeah, I don't think the Lakers expected him and Reddish and others to opt in like this. Rodney. I do think that made things a lot more tangled up. Adam is Demarty rose in a good fit for the Lakers or a name that everybody knows well. I believe he's gonna be thirty six by the end of this season. Now, to his credit, he's always hit the fountain of youth. He still plays at a very high level and he's
a mid range master. But that's where things could get a little bit dicey, because guys like that can clog up the paint in this space and pace league where you want to stretch the floor, and he's looking to take sixteen to eighteen foot jumpers. He doesn't offer the spacing because he only attempted I think three to three pointers per game last season. He's been taking a little bit more as his career has gone along, but it's still all about two
pointers with him, which he is really efficient at. But it's just it's a it's a cog in the machine a little bit sometimes when you have a guy like that, and you already have Anthony Davis, who you want playing in the paint, and Lebron James going downhill. So I don't know if having another non three point shooter out there on the floor would be as big as a get of a get for the Lakers as some people are saying it
would be. We hit go on and talk about the Lakers forever. Let's move to the Clippers, Adam. I just want to ask you, you know, because we talked about this last week of where Paul George may land ends up landing in Philadelphia, getting that extra year and that money, how was just overall? How is this? How is this going to land for the Clippers now this summer and going forward? What's their direction? Hey? Look, Paul George did what was best for Paul George. The Clippers did
what was best for the Clippers organization. I don't think there's much blame to go around here. Paul George ended up with at least sixty two million dollars taking that deal. Guys at least that much more money. The Clippers didn't want to give him the fourth year. Why because they all ready yours paying call Leonard, they're paying James Harden and both of those guys took pay cuss the deal they got James Harden on, I couldn't believe. I thought for
sure he was gonna get a three year deal. He basically got a one plus one seventy million dollars total, so thirty five million this year and next. But if he has a great year, he's probably gonna opt out and then go for a bigger deal. So the Clippers have a lot more flexibility now within the cap. They're hard capped to the first apron because they already spent their taxpayer mid level exception. But Paul George, look, I'm gonna think of him as a good Clipper. I am I'm gonna remember him fondly.
It didn't go as planned, but you know why, because the majority of the reason this era of Clippers basketball with him and Kawhi Leonard hasn't worked out was because of things outside of their control, all the injuries going on. I fully believe they would have won in twenty twenty one had Kawhi Leonard not have done his knee, and we may look back and say that was the moment where things truly ended, because then he misses an entire year and
now he's had a meniscus tear, he's had swelling in that knee. Sounds like he's healthy and ready to go for the Olympics. So that's good to see at least. But Paul George, he missed one hundred and thirty three games, Kawhi Leonard missed one hundred and seventy eight games. They just could never be out there enough together, even though when they were, they wanted a seven hundred win percentage. That's elite, that's fantastic, that's what you
wanted from that duo. They just couldn't stay out there enough and be healthy out there on the court. Is it a missed opportunity? You know what if? Yeah, it feels a little bit like uh T Mac and Grant Hill to some degree, those two guys not being able to stay healthy, especially Grant Hill. But I still am gonna I'm not gonna completely flip or turn on Paul George. I wish him nothing but the best unless he's playing
the Clippers. I've be rooting for the Clippers in those games. But I some people are upset because they want him to stay and take a hometown discount basically, but guys over sixty million dollar more to go to the Philadelphia seventy six ers, Rodney, you get this more than anyone an athlete's time span to make the majority of the money they're gonna make in their life happens within five, ten or fifteen years. If you're lucky, right, you gotta
take advantage of that. I'm never gonna fault anyone for taking the most money possible. Did the Clippers sign the wrong guy? Should they have signed Paul Georgia, not Kawhi now Kawhi Leonard. I think it's honestly an easy answer. When Kawhi is healthy, he plays like a top five player out there. He plays like an MVP player. He's an all time one of the
greatest playoff performers in NBA history. I understand he's missed about forty more games than Paul George is a Clipper, and that's including the fact that he missed an entire season after tearing his ACL But when he's been healthy, he's been very much more reliable and consistent with his play. The knock on Paul George, and I said this before, you don't understand night tonight, whether he's gonna be a top ten player level or a top thirty five player level.
His play fluctuated much more, especially in the playoffs, than Kawhi Leonard. Kawhi was the clear number one Paul George said it multiple times. He's the number one. I'm the number two. You pay the number one guy. Oh he said out of his mouth. Adam, what do you say when people look up and the casual fan goes, well, look at Boston, man, they got two Supermax guys and they got supporting cats. How do they do it? And we don't. We can't do it. The Boston
Celtics drafted both of those guys. They've had them on the cheap for some time. They only recently got these deals where combined I think they're making six hundred million dollars, which is crazy. By the way. On a side note, the Boston Celtics just won the championship with two players on their roster combined to make over six hundred million dollars, and both of them I don't believe for top five players in the league. They're both very good. Jason
Tatum certainly plays like a top five player at times. I would say he has some of the same issues as Paul George. You don't know what you're getting from him offensively, but he's so damn well rounded it almost doesn't matter. And the team is constructed so perfectly where you can play five out with a bunch of two way guys. They played both ends of the court, and they also all shoot three pointers. You know who was doing that before
anyone? The Clippers in twenty twenty one Wing stop Clippers when it looked like they were going to win the championship, they haddle that versatility. But Kawhi Leonard did his acl The rest is history. Maybe, So the Boston Celtics did everything right, and they had a little bit of good fortune along the
way, and they finally got over the top. And they didn't listen to dumbasses who said they needed to break it up and get rid of Jalen Brown or people I don't know, like Fred on this show who said they shouldn't paid him three hundred million dollars. I don't know if Fred said that or not. But you know, okay, Bred, how many people said it going into this past season that you can't pay Jalen Brown three hundred million dollars. Guess who was Finals MVP? Jalen Brown. I think it worked out
all right, Adam, Right now, who would you rather be? The Lakers are the Clippers? Right now? Fred, you know I'm going to say the Clippers what kind of questions. Yes, well, all right, but from the basketball perspective, an analyticals perspective, I like the Clippers flexibility they have right now in the way that they have scrambled here because they always had a backup plan. They knew, guys, this was not a surprise to them. This stalemate has been going on four months, and it was
always the impasse was they don't want to give him the fourth year. If he could get the MAX from anyone else, he was likely going to take it. He got it from Philly. The Clippers are not surprised from this or reeling or didn't have backup options already. When they signed Derek Jones Junior right away on Sunday, you knew it was on. By the way, that was the guy who shut down Paul George for the most part in the first round series for the Dallas Mavericks. Kind of interest there, But they
got Chris Dunn in there. Nicholas batoum all time Clipper favorite, one of the best role players of his generation, is back. They have Mobamba, and they still have more moves to make because they're under salary cap. Hell now they're under the second apron and the first Apron. So people said, oh, you just lost Paul George for nothing. No they didn't, not at all. It opened up all these other options and possibilities, and now they can go from a team that the last seventy games of last season,
believe it or not, the Clippers were twenty first defensively. Now they can improve on the defensive end to make up for the loss of Paul George. Offensively where yeah, they were outstanding on that end, and that made up for their poor defense last year. The only way to still be as competitive is if you shore up the defense now, and it looks like they're trying to have a defensive identity. I love that the Lakers still just have so
many unknowns right now going on with this offseasonde of the Broni stuff. Who's going to be the guy? Is Lebron going to be happy with whoever they bring in? Because somebody is coming. And I saw at the press conference earlier they said for the right guy, we will give up future first round picks. But who they believe is the right guy and who Lebron thinks is
the right guy to bring in right now may differ. Because I think the Lakers are looking at the next ten years and Lebron's obviously looking at the next two. So there's somewhat even if it's not outwardly a schism, there are different philosophies going on with the Lakers organization between their best player, who I think is still their best, most important player, which is crazy to say at this point at the age of forty, and the front office. Yeah
so yeah. I mean, we hear the press conference with the Lakers, and you know, it's about culture. But we've seen the last what three coaches. They say that and then two years later the coaches fired. Do you think this time around with JJ, because they it feels like they're in no man's land even with Lebron playing, still playing at a high level. They got ad, but the supporting cast is not really assisted them into moving
further than where they are. Are they willing with Lebron, like you mentioned, having about two more years left, willing to play the long game With JJ? I think the thing I most encouraged about with JJ Reddick. Look, it may not work out, but he at least has said the right things that they should be doing, which is winning more on the margins, which is crashing offensive rebounds with guards with teams are doing a ton now because
it's not just the NFL that talks about the possession battle. That talk has lingered into the NBA the last couple of years. That has been the buzzword. The team that has more possessions, that gets more shots up is going to win the ball game because everybody who is shooting a very high percentage right now. If you look at teams and shooting charts and shot profiles, most teams understand through the analytics what shots are good shots and what shots are bad
shots. Like that level playing field has occurred in the NBA where everybody's kind of on the same page there, although the Lakers have been behind in that area for some time and JJ Reddick said, we have to take more threes. Guys. The Boston Celtics led the league and three porters attempted. It's not just because they had the personnel that is an analytics play, because the deal is this, shooting thirty three percent from three is the equivalent of shooting
fifty percent from two. So even when you're shooting below league average, which is like thirty five thirty six percent from the outside, at thirty three percent you're still hanging in there like so everybody is doing it. Because of that,
you have to evolve with the times. The Lakers have been dragging their feet into the twenty first century when it comes to NBA basketball because they could still just pick up star players and it's okay, and we can mask any deficiencies we have or dysfunction within the organization because superstars will always and save us. But the new CBA is changing that, guys, I'm telling you it is so much more difficult. For instance, let me throw out a couple
of restrictions now at the second aprin This is what happens. If you get above one hundred and eighty eight million dollars. You can have first round picks that are seven years out, which teams typically trade, like the Lakers did with the New Orleans Pelicans. They get frozen. You can't move them, you can't do anything with them. Oh and guess what else. Those first round picks they move to the back of the line. They're a thirtieth pick now, so when you get to them, you're screwed too. Oh guess
what else? You see a player out there that makes thirty million dollars, you can't aggregate contracts to go get him. You can't take two of your guys that make fifteen million dollars to go get one player that makes thirty. That's how restrictive it is. That's how punitive it is. They've done all this and try to stop big spenders like the Clippers and Steve Balmer, like
Joe lacub with the Golden State War, and it's going to work. We're just seeing it right now with the Clippers, they're becoming a little bit. Maybe you could say Paul George is a cap casualty because I don't think they had this new CBA they'd be so worried about the fourth year. But it
changes everything. Every team is gonna have to deal with this now. It's a completely different landscape in the NBA when it comes to organizing front offices and what you prioritize and knowing what your window is to win in the league, or whether or not you should have more flexibility on the roster because you might have to rebuild in the next couple of years. Do the new CBA, All right, Hey, breaking it down down, Adam. That's Adam,
good job, good insight, Thanks man. I love you guys. Thanks for having me in last week, believing in me and all that weird mushy stuff. I love you, all right, love you too, all right, All right, cold heartedbastard, you're friend there. So here's a word from Jacob. Accident over injury called Jacob and money. You call Jacob. We'll talk about that. Yeah, come on, come on, let's get home. Back to it, Freddy, come on now on a Tuesday, Rodney pet
fred Rogan, let's go Dodgers at the stadium. David Vasse joins us at two o'clock. So they're back, and uh, I think pretty much where people thought they would be in first place in the division at the beginning of the year. Of course, a Dodger fans thought, well, they'd win every game. I mean, they wouldn't even lose. This would be a no brainer. I like the way the season is playing out for them right now. I liked it there, I do. I do. Little adversity.
We've seen what happens when they won one hundred games. We get that. We've seen that movie a few times now, little adversity, keep it moving, be in first place. They're gonna win one hundred games this year. Fat yeah, But it's like one hundred and eleven, one hundred and five. I said before the season started. I don't even care if they
went a hundred. To me, it means nothing. To me. It means be as healthy as you can be, have a little momentum, have dealt with some adversity, get hot at the right time, and go. So. I think it's fine. I think it's fine where they're at right now. Reports interesting with the trade deadline coming up, and Vic said it, and I kind of pooh pooed him, but he had a point. Garrett Crochet of the White Sox, now they would move him. He is
a very talented young pitcher under club control for a few more years. He could become a bona fide ace, a number one. If you're the White Sox, even though you're god awful, I don't know why you'd move him. Somebody could build around. But maybe they think they could get something for him, So they're exploring that possibility. And the Dodgers have certainly kicked the
tires on Crochet. They kicked the tires. But here's what's interesting. According to reports during the offseason, the Dodgers had a lot of interest in somebody Gavin Stone. David Vassay said before the season started, this guy could be a cy young winner. And you know, Dave's with him every day. He knows better than anybody what they are and how they'll play. But I heard that, and what are you kidding, Gavin Stone. Well, Dave's
right. Dave's right. The Dodgers had numerous numerous offers for him, and they turned down each and every one, so they know what they're doing. You've got to believe that Gavin Stone give them the He's pitched this year. Rodney's sort of like an acquisition they made because maybe they expected him to do this. I don't think anybody else did, so he's kind of a bonus, like a guy they trained for. That's pretty good so far, you know what I mean. Yeah, I think outside of the Dodgers organization,
nobody really knew what he was about. But then we're finding out that there were a few teams that did know what he was about and that had interest in him. And I think there were reports out there that during the offseason he was working on some things and Mark Pryor to pitching staff and the coaches were looking at him and say, you know, why are you not throwing this pitch? More, why are you not throwing that pitch? So they worked on a few things, given it a little bit more arsenal, and
it's turned out to be fantastic. The question now is how do you how do you manage his workload? Much like Tyler Glass. Now you know Tyler's not you know, he's approaching as many innings as he's ever pitched, and how do you dial him back a little bit? And same thing with Gavin Stone is that he's he's a young pitcher that hasn't gone this long and especially in the major leagues. So what do you do with him? Do you keep trotting him out there to keep getting experienced, or do you dial him
back so you can be ready for October? And the problem that the Dodgers have, and yes, they're gonna have guys coming back off of injury. But you don't know how those guys are gonna come back. And you've got two guys that have been proving themselves that you look up to October and say, we got to have these two guys ready to go, because we don't know if Walker is gonna get it turned around, and we don't know Bobby
Miller gets it, gets his form back. We don't know about some of the y Kershaw is supposed to come back, We don't know he had to set back. So we got a Yashinobyl. I mean, you know, Yamamoto. We don't know how he's gonna come back. So I mean with the two guys that they got, they got to really protect him, like those are our two aces. Fred. Yeah, I would go easy with Klass now. I would I go easy, you know, if he can skip a starter or two here or there, just to try to remain strong,
I would do that. I would not push it with him because he's in uncharted territories, and obviously for Stone as well, but Stone's not had the injury history of a Glass now. So the trade deadline, obviously,
arms are always a premium. Dodgers will be looking around see if they can kick the tires on somebody other thing the outfielder now say, says, go get Tommy fam Yes, he's a complete pain and a bit of a psycho, but you'll only have him for half a season, and that's that dog you want, and he'll be able to leave these guys and fire him up. But let me suggest this to you, all of a sudden, the forgotten man, Chris Taylor is starting to play a little bit Rodney a little
bit. I'm not saying he's tearing the cover off the ball, but he's starting to play a little bit, and maybe it is the start of something. If he plays, if he comes around, if he gets it together, isn't that like you went out and traded for somebody, Because quite frankly, he has not made very much of an impact at all. So if he plays the way they hoped he would when they signed him, haven't you
just added to your roster with a guy sitting there. Yeah, you can look at it that way that he hadn't give you any really real production through the first half of the season, and now he is starting to get hot.
The thing with Chris Taylor is that you know what he can do, and you know what he can do in the postseason, and if he does continue the way he's gone the last week and a half or so, I'm willing to roll that dice and let him keep going Fred because I, like I said, he's got history with us, and he's got history and big time moments with us. Tommy Fam, I think it's just, you know,
it's a roll of the dice. He please played well in Spurts, and yes, he's got the fiery attitude, but is that something you want to bring into the locker room midseason? I don't know if it's me, No, I'm rolling the dice with Chris Taylor what I got. I don't mind. I don't like Fam, but I don't mind him. I don't mind him on your team. It's you know, he's what he's doing. He's our guy. Theory, if he's your guy, I hate you.
But if you're our guy, maybe I like you. Yeah. But you think it'd be too much of a disruption period, Yeah, just yeah. I don't think it's the impact on the game physically, you know, is is bad or his defense and all that. I don't think it's that impactful that you got to go bring him in and make an effort to really go bring him in, and then he let a ball go off his glove for a home run when they play recently, you know, and he's got his
history. Look, I guess I never I never got over the attack on Jock Peterson for fantasy football. I just never got over that. So I'm not a big fan. And you know what, and I get that because guys have done stuff. Honestly, it's like the Region Rondo. Oh, he's such a great guy and he'd be a wonderful coach. What he did to the reference Billy Kennedy. I'll never get over it. I can never get over that. You're I get what you're saying. Some things just hit
you a certain way for whatever reason. You can't get over it. You Everything, everything they do is colored by that. Yeah, yeah, Yeah, I'm with you. I'm with you. So I don't know. Unless he's a you know, just a monumental talent that is going to immediately make a real difference on your team. Guys like that that are edgy like that, I don't know if you bring them in. Yeah, I hear you, I hear you. Well, we'll see, I mean, Dave will be on top of the two o'clock hour, and he'll tell us why Tommy
Fam should be in the lineup tonight. It'll be pretty simple. He'll just jump in here and explain why we're both wrong and why Tommy Fam should be playing tonight. There you go, Uh, you know what we have done. Let's do this. Let's play it. We haven't played Know Your Squad in a while? No, we haven't. Should we play Know your Squad? Today? Come on? Why not? Oh? I didn't think so, but I did not. Whatever what is that supposed to mean? Whatever? You know what it means, Kevin? All right, So we'll play Know your Squad coming up after the break.
