Transcript

Let's do it. Fred Rogan Rodney Peach on a five to seventy LA Sports one hour the Sprint on this Friday. Mm hmm, okay, time to celebrate great news. Want to start with something that will put a smile on your face. Dodgers will left Philadelphia. See things are already better. There's reason to celebrate. But it's the city of brotherly love. Fred, everything's supposed to beautiful in Philly. No love for the Dodgers. So you know

what, get out. That's what I say. If they're not showing you the love and the city of brotherly love, just get the hell out. And they did. That's in your rear view mirror. Goodbye Philly, see the rocky steps. I don't need a cheese steak. We're gone. We're gone, pretty simple, out of here. That's it. Uh So, Yeah, it didn't go well. Actually didn't went pretty poorly, to be honest with me. Yeah, And you know you can make the statement and

you probably will that, uh well, those aren't the real Dodgers. There's a lot of guys hurt, and if they weren't hurt, we don't know. Let's just be honest, we don't know if they weren't hurt. Well, it would have been different probably you'd had different guys playing, and you'll hope with the different guys they would have looked better, but they didn't. And that's just the way it goes. And those are three games. Dave Roberts said it after the game. Hey, they're just better than us right

now. Thank you. That was a very honest assessment. Didn't sugarcoat it, didn't candy code it. They're just better, Rodney. They're better than us right now. Does that mean there'd be They're going to be better in October though that doesn't necessarily mean that. You know, it means right now they're playing better than the Dodgers are. And that's it's just very simple, very simple. And if you don't like it, then stop watching sports.

It's gonna be that way. And just because you pay a guy, which is why always and you always see me frown fit and always get a snarl when somebody says, well he's making three hundred million dollars a year. But it didn't work that way. It doesn't work that way. You're human. Guys are human. They're gonna go through ebbs and flows and ups and downs and They've got good guys on that team. If you stack up the Phillies roster and lineup against anybody in Major League Baseball, they're at the top.

They're at the at least in top three. When you put together guys that can hit like schwarbur and you put Bryce Harper in there, and real mutual didn't even play, you know, for them over the during the series. They have a very very good lineup that could stack up against anyone, anyone. Sure, you know, the Dodgers can throw out you know, o Tani, they're not many better than him. He's the best. And then

Mookie comes back, he's one of the greatest Freddy too. But then you start going down the whole lineup, player for player, Philly's pretty good. Philly stack up with most teams, if not all the teams. So it's not a stretch that the Phillies at basically full strength, because they got their guys, at least most of them, would beat the Dodgers in a three game series at this point in the season. Rodnie roll is open, Come

You'll see why Spotlight twenty nine Casino is Coachella Valley's best bet. All right, so the Phillies are better right now. Absolutely no idea what will happen in October, by the way,

no idea if anybody will come back for the Dodgers by October. We don't know. There's no crystal ball here. This is the way it plays out. But the thing that you have to look at a they've been a five hundred team, the Dodgers over the last two months. Okay, now that's thing to go. That's not very good. Their starters have the fifth worst ERA and the majors in that span. What does that tell you, really simple? The pictures are hurt, the guys that have been up haven't

been doing as well, and they don't win as many games. To me, it's pretty simple there. You go. Guess what when all your pictures are hurt, you got a problem. When you've got your guys that are injured, you got a problem. When they're pictures because you only got so many of them. And if you look at the Dodger staff, it's the starting staff is kind of in shambles right now because so many people are hurt. Do they plan on getting hurt? Of course not. Do they want

to be hurt? Not at all? Are they? Yes? So now you have to figure out what to do. And there's your dilemma, pretty cut and dried. I don't think it requires a great deal of an house's they have no pictures right now, that's it. No, I mean they've got to start the season. I mean, namely, there is there is there one that at the beginning of the season, right after spring training, as we start the season, is there one picture that was signed up to

be part of the rotation? I mean, I'm trying to think is I don't think Gavin Stone was kind of thrown in there, right, Yep, he was kind of thrust into that role. But I don't think there's they're not one when you think of Yamamoto, Glass, Now, Miller, Kirshaw Miller, Yeah, yeah, And they've had to do it, you know,

by by committee and kind of makeshift it. So in essence, you could look at it like it's surprising the Dodgers are where they are, given that they don't have one starting pitcher at this point in July twelve that they penciled in to be a part of the rotation. Yeah, there's the problem. I mean Dodger fan. So you know, I work a good period of time. I'm in the Coachella Valley, you guys know that. And sometimes I'm back in Burbank doing the show. And there's a guy here and

he lives and dies Dodgers. He's one of the sales guys and he lives and he dies it. And for Father's Day, his wife took him to Dodgers Stadium and that made his whole month. I mean, he is as big a fan as you can imagine. And every morning he walks in to see me, And if the Dodgers have won the night before, he is thrilled, and if the Dodgers have lost, he is miserable. So he came in this morning he goes, oh, man, what are we gonna do? What are we gonna do? Now? What are we gonna do?

This is terrible. I'm a fan. I live it every day. I said, well, you know what, relax because right now they're not very good because they have no pitching. You cannot look at three games right here and right now, we go, well, god, that's the end of that. You can't In three weeks, things could change dramatically. You know, the guys are in position, they're there, the roster is set, but you gotta find pitching. That's it. Nobody thought Yamamoto would get

hurt like this. Nobody cross your fingers. He can come back. Glasnow gets his trip to the injured list before the All Star break. Bobby Miller's been sent down. Not the same guy since what he got hurt? He got hurt, Kershaw. We don't know. We know this. Those rehab assignments haven't been flawless. We know that. We know he's had some pain as well. So now if you just start looking at the staff, you understand exactly what's going on. You know, you see there's no mystery blaming

Fred Who we blaming though, baseball guys? Who are we gonna blame the guy's get hurt, Well, yeah, it's his fault. It is Dave Roberts fault. He should he should get it right now. As a matter of yes, Yes, guys get hurt now. What are you gonna do? So that that's the question, what are you going to do concerning if you really look at those numbers, this is accurate. A five hundred team for the last two months, that's an issue, but I think it's pitching

related. You look at that as that's that could be looked at as a positive. Fred out in the world. Did they stay five hundred given all the injuries? I mean when I you know, know this first time when you're on a team and you have that kind of injury hits your the injury bug that hits your team like that, you know, and you say, God, we're not going to have our guys for the next you know, in football is shorter, so for the next four games, we're not gonna

have our guys. You're hoping to go to and two with that, you're hoping to go five hundred without your guys and weather the storm. And then on the other side when we get our guys back then were making a run. But man, you know, it's not time to uh to overreact. To be one thing, if they had they did have their guys and they're getting beat and getting swept and can't match up against good teams. Around the league. Then you got really reason for concern. But at this point now

is you got to be realistic about where this team is right now. And there's the issue. It's pretty simple, but that does get you to start thinking, now, all right now, if we're gonna if we're gonna kind of break it down a little bit, and everybody's a general manager now, everybody gets to make a decision because it's just like fantasy baseball. You can do whatever you want because that's how fans think. I got an idea, why don't we send five guys, Garrett Cole. It's not gonna work that

way. That doesn't work. But one thing you do have to look at now, and it's something the Dodgers have to consider and and the way they react to this will tell you a lot about where their mindset is. They're going to have to go get some pitching at the trade deadline that we now know you're always looking for it. They're going to have to because you simply don't know what's going to happen with your guys. So then it leads to this, and this is the thing Dodger fan should look for. Rodney,

I don't have the answer if they're all in this year. I believe they are. Would they overpay for that pitching at the trade deadline? Would they make that move? In other words, we're in really bad shape here. We didn't expect any of this, so we're going to have to go out and get real pitching. Do you think they'll overpay at the trade deadline? No, I don't. I think that they can find a deal that's, you know, somewhat reasonable or maybe even a little above reasonable. I think

they go for it. But if it means them really overpaying, uh, I don't see that happening. I don't see it having for for a reason, I don't think they I think they believe the guys. They're gonna get their guys back. But also I don't know if there's a really a a guy out there that they need to go over pay for that would be available. There's some guys having pretty good years, right, There's some guys that

are that are out there. You hear their names all you know that they're having a good season, and there's that's a guy that people are looking at. But is there a Ferlander? Is there a Garrett Cole out there? Is there a you know, a bona fide year and in year out, big time picture out there that they can go get and overpay for. You tell me who that is not sure? Who it could be? Well, we know the name Crochet has been mentioned, but do you put him in

the classes? You know, I've heard him in the classes right now. He's probably the best guy available and has a promising future and is club controlled. To get him, you're gonna have to overpay because you're getting to that point now if everybody does not come back, and when they come back and look at Bobby Miller, look at Walker Bueller, they were not effective.

Yeah, track record doesn't sound good because the two guys that we were expecting at some point to really count on this year have come back and not been have not found their form yet, you know, not saying that they can't, but they haven't found their form yet. In fact, it's been it's been very it's been disappointing for both Walker Bueller and Bobby Miller. You know, one had to leave and go to Florida to try to get fixed and the other one had got sent down, so you know, it's not what

they expected. Can they turn it around? Absolutely? Will they? That remains to be seen, but it's definitely something that I think threw a wrench into their plans and the Dodgers not we're not counting on I think you got to go for it. Whatever the definition is of you might have to give up a little more than you hoped. I think you probably have to do that this year. And I also think that goes against the mantra of the

Dodgers and you're building for sustained success. You can't give everything up now for right now. You can't mortgage the future. But in this situation, with the expectation placed on this team, yeah, I think you got it and then got to do it. You gotta do It's it's a tough situation. It's you know, it's even more tough tougher on on Dave Roberts because now you know all the pressure and this was inworthy and outwardly, all the pressure

was on Dave Robinson. Now you've got everything right, that was a talk in the offseason. Now you've got everything, got to go win it. It is winter bust this year, right? Does that mean winter bust? If I'm healthy? What does that mean? Winter bust? No matter what, AND's just say the Dodgers don't necessarily go for it, right, I mean, can you put it on Dave Roberts as them not necessarily win in the World Series if they don't get these guys back from hell or they don't

get the guys back to their form again. I mean, people will try and will do, but internally, do you put it on him? Well, I mean, if if you're if you're honest, if you don't go for it's like if you don't go get Cruchet and just have to give up a lot of stuff, you say, we're not gonna go for it, We're gonna count on our guys coming back. Well, it comes down to this, did your guys come back, and if they came back, were

they where they needed to be? Bobby Miller and Walker Bueller come back and uh from no hitters and Yammoto joins them, and every time somebody pitches, they give up one hit. If that happened and then the Dodgers didn't hit and Mookie came back out, people might point it, Dave Roberts, what's the reality of that happening? What's the reality of that Nothing, It's zero,

It's not going to happen. Okay, So Now, if you want to blame Dave Roberts, what do you want him to do, because I guess he could try to pitch, but that would probably be worse than sending Bobby Miller out there. So what is it you want him to do if you don't have the horses? Well, you go to the Kentucky Jersey and they break from the gate and there are twelve horses and a jockey running, not on a horse. What do you expect Is the jockey going to win

just running behind the horses? Of course not. There's no horse. So if he doesn't have horses, what would you like him to do about it? There's nothing he can do. And if you want to point a finger at him, that's fine, but there's nothing he can do, and frankly, nobody could do. It's nothing anyone could do. I mean, who can survive in that situation? You know. But we know how this goes, and we know how the pressure was put on him for the season.

He even said it, you know, and you know if they don't get healthy again, no manager in baseball could could win under the circumstances. The fact that there there's still a five hundred club during this stretch to me, with the injuries that they've had, that's a pretty good feat fit for them to stay in first place. Yeah, and they will be in first place at the All Star break. Hopefully the Tigers will provide the cure to what ails them. Hopefully I'll get the Tigers and then it'll be fine again.

It'll it'll all be fine, all yeah. All. It's kind of like Colorado, Fred when you go to Colorado to kind of get that medicine at that good medicine. Yeah, you know, you know, some would say, you know, Detroit's got that in the air as well, a little motown medicine. Yeah, little motown medicine, babytown medicine. That get right medicine. That's it, get right. Aren't you upset? You were there when car Chop House was there, right, Yes, across from Tiger Stadium.

Yes, absolutely. Carl's was the best, and it was the best fanic, old school. It was great seafood steak yeah yeah. And when I was a kid growing up, it was like the fancy restaurant because you went in and you saw the lobsters and you go, I'll take that, right, yeah, slimming in the tank, yeah right, right, when you walk in. Uh huh. I think it's sad that place closed.

I just wanted to say that. Every time I think of Detroit, I think are Carls and Killarney Castle, which you would either take the bridge or the tunnel to in Windsor. Mm hmm. Killarney Castle. Yeah, passed it many a times. Right, My parents would take me there all the times. Schmorgasboard, go in there and get your food and Windsor it was fun. Oh the days, Freddie the days and the Babblo boat. Some went to Windsor for other reasons, Fred. But I've heard that that's for

another show. Yeah, yeah, I heard that. Yeah, I heard those stories about Windsor. But I was only a kid, right right when you were playing for the lines. You ever go to Belle Isle? Oh yeah, Belle Ou. Yeah, that was a you know, if you didn't know what to do, you're like trying to figure out on the weekend, and especially in the summer, Hey, let's go to bell Aule. There's always something going on in bell Aisle belle Ou, bell A. Let's

just go to bell Out. There's always music and parties. And somebody was doing something on bell I always find something to do on bell Out. Yeah, and then it got to a point where Belle I was not under go to bell Isle anymore. Yeah, well you know that happens a little bit. And did you ever take the Bablo boat? I did not. I did not, No, never, I never did that. I never did that. When I saw Steve Balmer, you know he's from Detroit, uh huh, I said, Okay, are you really from Detroit? You know,

are you seriously from Detroit? Because I'm from Detroit. You ever take the Bablo boat? What did he say? Oh? He took the boat? Oh yeah he did. Looking a boblo Island. It was an amusement part boblo Island. Boy, you thought that was Disneyland. Yeah, you did, because you got to take the boat to it. It was fun. It was fun. See it already looks better for the Dodgers. Like, how much fun you're gonna have in Detroit? Uh huh. There you go. Whatever ails you go to Detroit, go to Detroit. You're gonna

Okay, the way you watch NBA basketball may change, might change, and it's sad not over yet but pretty close. And we'll get into that. Yeah, you know it played the song Ronnie. That's it. Because it is Friday. Even though we are on a sprint, we absolutely positively we don't get Let's go, Freddy them on now, Old Freddy, hit your button,

Freddy, Now you gotta push fred Let's go. All right, all right, all right, my way. So the NBA is that its final year of its current rights deal and then it will revert. The deal is up. The league will be paid seven point six billion dollars by media companies. So when you sit here and go these are not TV shows, you're wrong. They are. They're television shows and they're paid a rights fee for those shows. That's why everything is geared toward TV. Sometimes games started out.

Times you're upset about that, you don't like certain scheduling decisions you're upset about that. No one really cares what you're upset about because there's the money and that's just the bottom line. So it's a valuable property. And it's funny about the NBA because sometimes it's up and sometimes it's down, but you have a lot of inventory. When you have inventory and it's live, it

makes it very valuable. So the NBA has this giant rights deal. You know who's controlled the rights recently for years, it's Turner or Warner Brothers Media, which is TNT and TBS and ESPN ABC. Prior to that, it was on NBC. It was sad when we lost that, but NBC looked at it and said, we cannot afford to pay that kind of rights fee because we won't make the money back. Well, things have changed since the Proud Peacock gave up the NBA and they're back in the game. Peacock is

one of the companies NBC that will have the NBA following next season. ESPN ABC is the other, and the third which everybody was talking about, is Amazon. Now the NBA games on NBC, some will be on Channel four NBC, A lot of them will be on Peacock. The streaming service. Amazon is all streaming service, and we know what ABC and ESPN are. So here's the deal. It's really sad for Turner to lose the NBA. And the reason it's sad is because, for my money and no disrespect anybody,

they really do the best job. We know. The pregame show, postgame show, halftime show is the best in the business. There's that. Also in their game coverage is better. I just think they're better than ESPN. I think ESPN wants to be what Turner is but can't be that.

So the caveat in all of this, according to the guy that runs Warner Brothers Discovery Media, the owners of Turner TNT TBS, they have the right to match one of the packages because they are the existing rights holder and there is some sort of predetermined amount of time once they are presented here are the offers, they have the opportunity to match, and if they match, then they will have that package. And it seems like the package they're going to

try to match if they can. And it all comes down to money is Amazon. Now. Amazon quite frankly has more money than Turner and what are Brothers Discovery because Amazon is not just dependent on media. Amazon is Amazon, and media is a part of it. Where if you're looking at a traditional broadcast or television company, that's all you got and that's hemorrhaging viewers. So that's where we're at. Going forward, it'll be ABC, NBC and either TNT somehow, some way will retain a part of it, or it goes

to Amazon. Rodney, what do you think of all that? And what do you think when they have the right to match it? Do you think Turner will match? I mean, you said that they don't have the money that an Amazon does because Amazon is a bohemoth obviously with Bezos and what they've done with Amazon is incredible, but they got more money than probably all of them. Do you see T and T matching? Feels like they're not going

to match it. I mean, and that deal is he said seven point say, but it's seventy six billion, which is out out of control. It's unbelievable seventy six billion dollar deal the NBA signed. It seems to me that of this deal, I think ESPN isn't about it. Two point six billion NB per season, NBC is at about two point five billion per season, and Amazon, I believe is it about one point eight billion per season. Now keep this in mind. Currently Turner is spending one point four billion,

so it's four hundred million more. And if you're Amazon, you know you're you're driving people to your streaming service. Man, you know what, So maybe we don't make that back. We're fine. We got no problems here. We're good. I don't know if if Warner Brothers Discovering, the owner of Turner has that it's four hundred million dollars, Rodney, It comes down to this, do I think they'll match? How much? Oh?

And in one other thing, there was a period of time where the president of uh Turner or Warner Brothers, David Zaslov, basically said they could live or die without the NBA made no difference. They were that good. Right, Yeah, he made that statement. Kind of flip wants to walk that back. Yeah, right, just walk that back. Four hundred million dollars. Is it a lot of money or isn't it. If it's not a lot of money, Turner matches. If it is a lot of money,

they don't. And that's how I look at it. I'm confused. So they put a lot of money, they match it. If it's not a lot of money. They don't. This is what I mean to them, like to them like and they look at their pockets and go, oh, that's just jump change. Then I match it. Then they match. I mean, does Warner Brothers, Discovery, the owner of Turner just go four hundred million dollars? That means nothing does will match? We're good? Or do they turn around and say, man, we can't do that. That's

financial suicide. We can't make a decision like that, it's irresponsible. Then they won't. That's really what it comes down to. Yeah, yeah, it's it's to me the way and this is across the board the way sports are going. And you're seeing, you know, from player salaries to teams valuations to everything about sports. We're just watching you know, COPA and YUIFA and soccer and it been global around the world, and the coverage is that it's getting I'm sure, I mean just on the service. To me,

it looks like it has done extremely well. I'm not a I don't watch soccer on a regular basis, but I found myself glued to it. So the future, when you look at the landscape and sports being the last real live broadcast of any type of show. I think you got to stay in that business. Red, I think you got to be in that business.

And it would be a shame for Warner and TNT to lose, which was, you know, perceived by most people of having the best pregame postgame show on of all sports on any network, and to lose that would be an absolute shame because once you lose it, you don't get it again. Right, that's the problem. You're to point out how important sports are. So

the CW, which televised is acc football. The CW has just included and done a special deal with the PAC twelve the two schools two two schools there gets a TV deal now too, because the CW, which nobody watches, knows that at least somebody will watch if they have live sports, right right, So I mean, if you look at it that way and say this is where we're gonna be ten years from now, you better be involved. You better stay involved. It's gonna be interesting. Good luck to Turner.

It'd be sad if they lose that Dodgers in Detroit taking on the Tigers first pitch today three forty Listen to every play of every Dodger game on a M five seventy LA and stream all games in HD on the iHeartRadio app. The keyword is A five seventy LA sports. It is powered by Lacare for all of La Needle spirituality. Before we get out here, Rodney, oh my show. Of course we do, Fred, of course we do. They

could be along. Let's go come on now, let's wind us down and down the home stretch, Rodney, Pete Fred Rogan on a Friday, y'all come on all right? Uh you know, Rodney, I think we need our spirituality, and we need it right now, don't you think right now? Let's do it to buy that spirituality. Let's walk come home on. Victor Brick Victed afternoon. He has good vibes for the Dodgers in Detroit. Yes, Vic killo. When you lived in Detroit for it? Did they

call you Doctor Detroit? Dan Aykroyd, what a great film? Under under underrated film? Did Doctor Detroit? Yes? Yes, the door is in. Big Mama was a gangster and he quarterbacked the Alliance, and he handed AWF a lot to Barry Sanders, who rode Pete B. Sanders was the best all no doubt in the world. B D B. What was that I like that. You're good. Yeah, his young son Oliver has the heart of a lion. I never figures. Come on now, I use

Barry Sanders on Madden back in the day with Ridney Peters the quarterback. Does that count for something? Boom boom boom only if you used him in Techmobile. I use our friend Christian Nakoya and tech Moobil because nobody can attack. He ran over everybody, everybody. The Nigerian Nightmare, y'all. Yeah, yeah, from the e boat tribe. If they get kings of beasts, he's a king of beats. Run in Fassio calling for the bamboo garden in Whittier. It's king flavor. Yeah. Okay. The sweep in South Philly

is done. It's over. It was ugly, it was brutal, and you guys touched the part of As Dave Roberts said, Phillies right now, they're a better cold ball club on July July whatever this is, eight nine, ten eleven, the Phillis were a better club. But Souls in the wound, all the big blows, it seemed, have local roots for the Phillies of Trey Turner. I mean, how many big hits did Trey Turney get during this during the series. I don't know if you consider him though

a local guy. Well it was a Dodger, Yeah, but that's about angel Brandon Marsh. How about Brandon Marsh. A lot of big hits for Marsh. I mean, I love I love Marsh's beard. But enough already sure that that was the key. Listen, the Phillies played well, the Dodgers didn't. It's it's pretty basic. It's a it's a it's a long, freaky baseball season. And the Dodger's pitching staff is and chapters. As Jago would say, it's shotted. You're missing MOOKI, you're missing Muncie.

I say, just let it go and we're on to the d But get this, a Dodger takes another uh hot club in Detroit. They've won six of seven. They just want a serious from the first place Cleveland Guardians. So you know Detroit is gonna it's gonna be tough. I'll take two out of three right now, and I believe the Dodgers will take two out of three. For the Tigers calling it there, it is absolutely I got some sunshine from the Philadelphia series. Another scoreless outing from my man, Alex Vessia

is e O A has dropped to one point three one. He got his two phillies out. I'm telling you he gets his n our chaser along with his two red Bullsey's good to go. Well that's later today. Quite the regiment there, Vic, that's what Vessia does. He guess you see him on the mound. He's got a lot of great energy. He's so focused

and he's pitching great.
