The Dodgers won 2 out of 3 against the Rockies over the weekend and now head back to the east coast yet again. We take your calls on impactful LA media figures

Transcript

All right, we continue on Fred Rogan Rodney Peach on five seventy LA Sports. If you miss any part of the show, get the app, download the podcast. Kevin will put it up the minute we get off the air each and every day. In our one, we talked about TJ. Simer's longtime columnists for The Times hosted a radio show on this ferry station dying. And then it led us to a conversation about impactful people. Who was impactful, because it's very difficult to do that, like him or not. He

was Bill Plashky's impactful, Jim Murray's impactful. Rodney mentioned the late Moult Florence was impactful, Doug Grecorian, Alan Malamud, and then we talked about local TV. The thing is this what was will never be again. It's virtually impossible because people don't consume their content in the same way. So if you grew up here, spent any number of years here, who is impactful to you? And we will talk about that coming up later on this hour.

Also we have an update Rodney on the driver who zoomed in for his court appearance right driving his car right well, which is a mistake to start with, you should not be on zoom all driving, correct, but he was going to the doctor, at which point the judge said, wait a minute, he's driving with a suspended license, yet he is now zooming in for his court hearing. Well, maybe that's not the case. Now, we'll talk about that later on this hour as well. All right, So the

Dodgers are traveling today back to the East Coast. Can you explain to me what was the thinking when they put the schedule together? Yeah, I don't know. The way they've been traveling to the East Coast, it doesn't make sense to come home for three days and then go right back to the East Coast, you know, I don't know. I don't know if they're punishing the Dodgers and then when they saw an opportunity, maybe this is the national

thing. They are playing the Yankees back there this weekend, so I think it's it's a big deal. But and the Dodgers obviously are a big draw, but certainly the back and forth from coast to coast is not helping the Dodgers. Yeah, this is the stupidest thing I've heard of in a long time. You're in the East or the Midwest, come on home, settle in, get three games in and go back to the East Coast immediately. It's really kind of a quirk of the schedule. But they're they're in Pittsburgh

tomorrow, so the Rockies were here. They took two of three from the Rockies. You got to feel pretty good about that. Yeah, do you do you feel good about taking two out of three from the Rockies. I think it feels good about taking from anybody three out of three from the Rockies. No, I hear you, but look at this point feel good about that. Gavin Stone and Yamamoto continue their runs of quality starts. I'll tell you what. Gavin Stone is getting into a groove that I'll tell you is

settling in now. Yes, he's feeling it right now. He's pitching with so much confidence and love to see that it was Era is under three now. I mean he he is dealing right now and hopefully he keeps it up.

Yeah. He is the only thing that I think slows him down because he is you know, a lot of it, mo, majority of it is is when when you pitch with confidence and have confidence, and he certainly has that right now, and you just knock on wood that he doesn't have any kind of set back in terms of injuries, because that's the only thing I think can derail him right now. And the way he's going in the momentum that he has so keep trotting him out there. I think he's got

to go out there every time his turn comes up. The pitch, he's got to go pitch. And he's doing great, you know, right now doing it. Yeah, I mean that that's really a key here. I think for the Dodgers, Grove looked good yesterday. These two young guys, you know, maybe because out of necessity they're doing it, but they're doing it pretty well, and I think you have to feel good about that. Uh. Yeah, the hitting is still a concern. The bottom part of

the order isn't producing as you would hope. But look at it like this, really, Uh most teams are like that, right. There are some some soft spots, some holes, and they've got some holes at the bottom of the order. They've just got to get that figured out, Rodney, that's all. Yeah, And it's it is is it holes though? Or

is it this guy's got to start hitting? You know. I just believe sometimes when you start to say, okay, we got to go elsewhere to find somebody, and that person that comes in from elsewhere has the same struggles as the people that you already had here, especially if those people that are

ones that have come through before. So I just I would be a little bit leary of saying, oh my god, we got to go replace six through nine, We got to go bring in trade deadline, we got to go bring in three more outfielders, and uh, you know another right and left handed bat and right handed bat and all this stuff. When you're sitting there and you've got you know, the depth of now pahz and you've got you know, Jason hey word and and and Keith k and Tiascar and and

all these guys playing, you know, to solidify that back in. Is it a situation where you waited out and see if those guys come around, or do you got to replace him? You still got James Outman that's sitting in the wings that you can probably bring up at some point too. That is that is, you know, still not reach his potential. So I don't know if it's turned. You know, time to panic with that sixty nine as opposed to you know, keep playing with the lneups and see who

starts to get high. Uh. Bobby Miller struggling in his first rehab start. He'll have another one on Friday. Max months. He suffered a bit of a setback with the oblique, but I guess if there is a bit of positive news there. Clayton Kershaw to Juli hitters for the first time on Saturday. He'll throw a simulated game later this week. Did you hear about Tommy Fam spat with Wilson Contreras. Yeah, yeah, do you hear about

this? I did? I did, I did. I saw it and I heard about it, and Jummy tummy Fam took exception to a little celebration. All right, So what did you think when you saw it? Describe what you saw? This is good. I saw they're playing the Brewers, right, So it was a It was an out by a mile, basically, I believe it was. And Contreras tagged him out and then I don't know if he said something to him, but he gave a little celebration as he went back to the dugout, and Tommy Fam took a sception to it.

Then he said, that's why I fight in the off seasons. I'm ready to f somebody up. That's exactly what happened, That's exactly. And you hear something like that and you think one of two things, Tommy Fam, get it together. You shouldn't be saying that. Here's another thing you think. Wouldn't it be great on the Dodgers. Wouldn't Tommy Fam stir it up a little bit, shake it up a little bit? No? I heard that. No, no, no, there's just having dogging and the

guy's just being ridiculous. The same guy that sucker punched Josh Peterson for a fantasy football game situation. Come on, really, that's the guy you wanted to go toughen you up and have some ads. Now, that's not the guy. This guy's gonna get you in trouble in the wrong situation because he's not gonna be able to hold back his emotions. Yeah, well, he's quite the guy, and he's as you pointed out, he's had this before. But we talked about Rodney. Do the Dodgers have that that guy?

Now, he's probably an extreme version of it. I agree, But do they have that guy? I don't know who that guy in a lesser form is on the Dodgers. Who is that guy? You know who? Maybe Mickey Rojas? Yeah, Mickey Rose got some attitude to him. I think Ti Oscar's got some attitude to him too. I think Tiaskar's got got some real attitude push comes to shove. I think he's got it. And you know, you know who I like on the Hill. I like Tyler Glass now I like I like his energy on the hill too, Bobby Miller.

I like his feist in this when he gets back here. Interesting. Interesting. But but I'm I'm with you in terms of there has to be a little bit more edge. Yeah, a little bit. I think I think Munsey has it. Oh yeah, Munsey's got it. Definitely, Munsey's got it. You just got to show it a little bit more. Yeah. The thing about Munsie, honestly, if he could and needed to, he would tear anybody's head off. I'm not even questioning that for one second.

He would do it. Oh, he'd be right in the middle of it, absolutely, you know, he wouldn't back off. And then you know who we forgotten Joe Kelly. Joe Kelly. Yes, yes, maybe it's out of side, out of mind thing with Joe Kelly and you know him and not being there, But yeah, Joe Kelly is certainly a guy's not backing down to anybody. No, he's not backing down. Because the Dodgers

are on the East coast. We will have a light week the two of us starting tomorrow, and you will hear each and every game, of course, right here on your home of the Dodgers AM five seventy LA Sports. Dodgers are in Pittsburgh to take on the Pirates. First pitch at three forty. So listen to every play of every Dodger game on AM five seventy LA Sports and stream all games in HD and the iHeartRadio app. The keyword is A in five to seventy LA Sports. It's pollowered by LA Care for all

of LA. All right, we talked about it at noon. Let's see if anybody wants to talk about it now. Uh, impactful people in Los Angeles. Impactful and our listeners have been around a while. So from a media perspective, who has impacted you and why? Eight six six nine eight seven two five seventy Yeah, it's on a Monday, coming right back as you're right to be. Fred Rogan, come on, all right, we talked when we came on the air. TJ Simers died. He was impactful.

Whether you liked what he did or didn't, he made an impact. He worked at the Times for twenty three years. That's highly unusual. Now, Uh, I would say longevities the barometer of success. If you can survive somewhere and continue to perform for a prolonged period of time, your career was successful. May not have liked him, but he had a successful career. So that got us to thinking who is impactful? Who could make that kind of impact on people in this city? Be it writers, be it

people on TV. So we asked the question who impacted you because it's very hard to find people like that now eight six six ninet eighty seven, two five seventy that is our number. Matt is in LA and Matt, thank you for calling and thank you for holding Who did you you feel was impactful in l A? Well, first, you know, the two gentlemen for l A was Mayor Bradley and Kenny Hahn Uh in sports, Uh broadcasting. For me, it was stuon Ahan, Uh, Tom Kelly, Jim Healy

he used to be on the radio. Yeah, that's a good one. He was, he was, And then of course on the on the TV was George Putnam, Uh, Jerry Dunfie and uh hal Fishman Fishman was h was one of the old guys there. So so this going dating me. You know, I'm in my little bit, but those are the guys I grew up with and uh but those are no good sellers, some really good fellas. And if if people watch Roller Derby and stuff, it was always declaiming God hear him and wrestling and all that. So, yeah, you

are dating yourself. Yeah, Matt, you're dating yourself a little bit. But absolutely those made an impact. All right, thanks for listening. I appreciate it, appreciate it. Let's go to a Huntington beach. Jeff, thank you for calling who has impacted you? Fred Hessler and Bob Kelly. Wow, you know I got you college football. Thanks Jeff Rodney. See,

here's what's interesting. When we started chopping this up and we said, you know, call in and tell us who's impacted you at eight six, six, nine eighty seven, two five seventy and you said this, You said this in the first segment. You know, it's generationally certain people. I don't know if today's generation Rodney can even be impacted any more like that?

True? Yeah, I don't know if they can. I don't know if they can have that same voice in their head that we would, you know, wake up to, you go to sleep to, you know, all those type of things that is just embedded in our minds like it was in years past. I don't know if they the the outlets or the attention span or whatever it may be, just the amount of outlets that you can go to. I don't think it's ever going to be impacted by that. Again, Yeah, I did not know those would be the calls. We

got guys that really did date themselves. If you're going back to roller derby days, you know, are we gonna have somebody calling with bowling for dollars too? Let's do Mitch in New Jersey, Mitch, thanks for holding go ahead. Think he's doing. You guys are quite good yourselves. But I like Phil Kleski, you know, I subscribed to the La Times, you know West Coast guys. I like Phil Star, especially his way he wrote about Venezuela especially to me and all that stuff I like as much. All

right, thanks Mitch, appreciate it. Thanks Mitch. That previous color said, he said, Tom Kelly, right, yeah, usc, yeah, yeah, yeah, I remember that voice always. I mean, you call the games and I was there and you know, many games back in the seventies, early eighties, all of that, and just certainly a voice that you gravitated to. Tom was great, he was, Paul and El Segundo, thanks for calling in who impacted you? I'm gonna stick with the times.

I liked Jim Mrie, I liked Scott Ausler, who's big Lakers guy. And I'd like flash Key obviously. TV wise, I love Keith Jackson. I liked the Roy Firestone, and I liked the Fred rogan A well. Appreciate that, Paul, but there's no accounting for taste. But thank you very much for that. Thank you for the kind words. Appreciate that your Roy Firestone certainly impacted people when he did what he did. He was

the best at what he did and he's from here. Yeah. He was the first to do that sports one on one kind of talk show with athletes behind the scenes and getting those deals. What was that show Roy started that he did by what was it called? Who's that Show? I was on that though I can't even remember what the show was, but it was huge. It was huge and everybody tuned in and he got everybody, Yeah, everybody to come on that show. Let's see where are we going? Scott

in Newport, Scott, thanks for holding go ahead. Fred, good to talk to you. I wanted to say, I'm sixty three years old and you got to mention the first mint mentioned was Jim Healy. He affected me. He was entertaining Chick Hearn And I want to mention a PA announcer, Bob Ramsey. Today the PA announcer scream. Let the crowd scream. Bob Ramsey was the best LA Coliseum. Ramsey sc No, are you talking about John Jay Ramsey? He did the Lakers two or not? John Ramsey?

I'm sorry, John, Yeah, John, Yeah, he was the best. He was good. He was clear and concise. Today, you go to a Charger game and they scream. I don't know why. Same thing at the Rams they do. They scream because I think what they're trying to do is create They're creating this aura of energy and excitement. But the fans need to do that. And Vin Scully was great. He let the fans do that. And and it can't go out with Inburg and Drysdale on Angel

games. The Halo shines tonight. I was a big Angel fan, and as a kid, I'd always love to hear that at the end of an Angel game. All right, appreciate the call. Thank you very much. Let's go to Virginia. Gino, listening on the app. Go ahead, Gino. He we'll appreciate that. Thank you very much. Thank you, Gino. You can't be listening on the app and be on the phone at the same time. That doesn't work. You're into your eye. I got

your mute. What's up? Good? All right, go ahead, Gino, Magic Johnson, Wayne Gretzky, Rick Lozano, uh the coach from USC back in the seventies, Robinson Marshall. Marshall was Marshall, Dion Kings. I forgot his name. Well, how can he impact you if you forgot his name? Gino? Ill this guy? Wait no, Gino, this guy left an impression on me that you won't remember you. You can't believe he affected and altered my life. Yeah, what's his name? Well,

I don't remember that guy. I don't know that guy. His name was Fred Rogan. He messed me all up? All right, Gino, thank you, goodbye, There goes Gino. Lennon Corona. Go ahead, Lynn, Hey, Fred Rodney, good guys up here. Hey, look if you grew up in Yeah, you guys awesome. You grew up in South central LA, and I did. There was an AM sports reporter next guy name was Brad Pie Junior. He would say, yes, yes, he

was good, he was awesome. And then if you I had a brother that was really good out of manu ors, if you scored twenty or more, he would mention your name on the radio. Boy, we couldn't wait to hear it. And then, uh, of course I watched bowling for dollars with my mom and my dad in the seventies with chick currents. Nobody's gonna ever forget him. And then uh, there was a guy named fast Eddy went the sports. He might have been a DC seven past Eddie Alexander.

Okay, So then the three that that got my heart, and then nobody will ever be as good as Ben Scully. But those are the three that impacted me because as I'm coming up in South central LA, those are the three that I was readily available to all the time. Appreciate it, those guys appreciate it. Thanks. You do you remember Brad Pie Junior absolutely in the hood. Yeah, Bad Bad was the guy in a unique style and you know had a show. I was on his show before too,

but yeah, he was. He was another one that was impactful. Ruben and Santa Anna go ahead, Rubin, Hey, guys, yes, I got four of them. Actually, Bench, well let's start with Red Rogan's George Michael, not the singer, but the guy with the time machine. You got two best storytellers, Bench, goalleaf and Paul Harvey. Oh, Paul Harvey. Sure yeah, yeah, he sure was. Hey he and you know he was a network guy, Ruben, thanks for the call. He was a network guy. But boy he really stood out, you know

now listening to everybody. Rodney and I guess I should have said this right at the top. The one guy I think and Kevin, I mean you grew up here. Uh, the guy I think made the greatest impact in LA sports media in history. Obviously I worked in all sports media. I think it's Jim Healy. I think it's Jim Healy if you are old enough to remember. And this does not happen anymore except for our show where everybody tunes in at noon because it is appointment listening. But it doesn't really happen

anymore. You could not wait for him to come on the air. Every day. People would pull over in their cars and listen to Jim Healy. And the funny thing about his show it went as long as it went. I think it started like at five point thirty. Uh huh. If it went thirty five minutes, it went thirty five minutes. If it went eighteen minutes, it went eighteen minutes. It went however long he wanted it to

go. It was lightning quick. It was hyper local. He had people everywhere feeding him stuff everywhere wow, and he would come up with stuff and you just wonder, how in the world did he know that. I mean, you had to listen. You had to listen every single day, and it was funny and it was biting, and it was wildly entertaining. I think he's probably now as we sit here in my mind, and you know, I've been here a few years, had the greatest impact in LA sports.

Vin Scully's in a different division. He's the Dodger play by play guy, but on a daily basis, I think it was Jim Healy. You know, we've had a son Pat on the show. A couple of times. But Jim Healy was just terrific. He broke new ground, He tried things no one else ever tried, and he wasn't afraid. He was an innovator, as we would say today, he was a disruptor. He was good. He was the best. And talking about the best. If you need a plumber, you need the best plumber, right, you gotta go

So here's the way it plays out today. Rodney has three, David has two. David. Good job, Katie. Uh, just a terrific effort on your part today. Wait to go, Katie. Hey,

Let's not think about lunch during the game tomorrow, Vinnie, all right, bring me some Malcolm's capers with my benttini. David, thanks for listening. We really appreciate it. Thanks guys. You have a great day as well, you know. And uh, David's out on the road, so it makes you think we need to hear from Jacob if you're injured in an accident over the weekend and you are
