All right, a two hour show, and let's start this hour with Sam Blum from The Athletic and Sam, thanks for jumping on, Thanks for having me. All right, let's get into the Angels. I know Aider Moreno had an exclusive interview with the OC News Group yesterday, the Southern California News Group, but he basically said he was never going to sell the team. Now, Sam, you reported on this.
Do you believe that? I mean, it's yeah, I mean, first off, I mean this exclusive interview. I think it's interesting. You know, we're all there and he goes and hand picks the reporter, and it's it is clear he wants to control his message and control who's asking questions to some extent, and you know, kind of how it goes how it all goes down. I think, do I think he's gonna sell the team?
No, I mean, he made that fairly clear, and I got to ask him that directly too, and and you know, he said he's not selling, and I tend to believe that, and I'm pretty sure that's why he wanted to speak yesterday to the extent that he did. He wanted.
There's been a lot of speculation, you know, just kind of in the ether, that that he would be interested possibly in selling after last year and after the you know, Otani's departure, and I kind of all the chaos that's really continued to surround this team in the last year since he decided he was going to take the team off the market. And so I think at this point, you know, he's made it clear. I mean,
he wants to stay there for the long term. And I believe he told Jeff and he told the Redister that you know, if there was a ridiculous
offer that came along, maybe would you know, change his mind. You know, he's a businessman and so yeah, like I guess a great offer could possibly you know, he changed the calculus for him, but at this point, I don't think he's selling, and you know, puts the Angels in a difficult position because you know, his ownership over the last two decades has not led to fruitful results, and if anything, it's they're going in the opposite direction. And you know, as you mentioned, you know we
grew up today. A lot of this is detailing all the uncertainties that confuse around the Angels long term, and with Ray Moreno in charge, I don't necessarily think those questions are going to be answered soon or at all. See, Sam, That's exactly why he didn't pick you to do the interview, because if you had asked him, as he's selling the team and he said no, you would have followed up with well, why the hell not? Then if you would have responded, you would have followed up with yeah,
but in the last two decades it's been awful. Why would you put people through that? See, that's what you would have said, Sam, And that's why he didn't pick you for the interview. I tend to I gonna want to give myself with trouble here. So I appreciate your comments and I
like it, Sam, I like it. But Saam, come on, Sam, he was never gonna sell the team when he but he took bids and he took in and people were talking about who's the guy the group, the guy was gonna buy the I mean, it went down a road, right, he was gonna sell. And now he said he never wanted to sell the team. It's it's it's just if a long line of like confusing, head scratching controversies and you know, chaos is just is come to define
this franchise. And I mean, for as much as they want to sell, you know, and they have good young players, right, they have players that are worth pay money to see they can be good. You could look at their roster and say, man, there is a foundation there,
and I do believe that. But the and that's why I think this makes why it makes this whole thing so much more frustrating, because there is a team there that if they invested in big free agents, they invested in player development, if they invested, you know, in scouting and facilities and in all the things that make a franchise in the modern day era of baseball. Good, then there's no reason why the Angels can't be a championship contender, be just as good as the Dodgers be, you know, a big market
franchise that compete every single year. There's no reason. The only reason that it doesn't happen is because they do not invest in the areas they need to, like every other, you know, competent franchise tends to do. So it's like, yeah, why is he not? Why why did you right? He's going back and forth like it's it's confusing. It's I think the fan and the fans, you know, they have no idea what's happening. They're always just kind of you know, contemplating and trying to figure out what
he's thinking, what he's doing. And so at least he came out and said something. I'll give him credit for that, but uh, at the end of the day's there's no real explanation as to where they're going from here or how they're going to end up ever become a championship for sending team. All right, Sam Blum of the Athletic is with us. So so Sam, Sam, like we we just covered a week and a half ago, two weeks ago, Dodger Big Dodger fan Fest. It was crazy. It
was wild. Yes, yeah, you know you saw it. So what what is Ardie Morano? What does he tell the Angel fan base? You just don't even do it. They don't even do a fan fest, right, like, you know, it's what do you tell the base? I mean, honestly, what he told death in that story was I thought it was fairly interesting that he basically said they're going to cut payroll, uh, just because you're not going to spend money just for the sake of sending it.
I mean, listen, I don't necessarily think they need to go out and get a Bellinger or a or you know, a Snell or a superstar player. They need to do is to develop their players and and put together, you know, a competent foundation of success. I mean that's everybody focuses on the you know, on the free agents. I think that is the least of their concerns. It's just it's a band aid. If they were to get a Snell or a Bellinger, maybe they'd win and get a couple
of extra games. I don't I don't know if think it puts them over the top. I really don't. And so what do you tell the fans? I mean, I think you I don't think he really I mean my read on it is is I think he cares about you know, having drawing attendance and and and you know, putting together you know, a form all game day experience. What it doesn't care about putting together a championship contender. I had on I don't I yet to see evidence of it. Uh,
just just my assessment of this. I mean, this is in order to really care about the fan base that you have to project a vision for what it actually will take. And they don't do that here. I mean they just you know, like his whole explanation for not selling at the deadline and trading Otani was basically, well, the fans they you know, they come to the ball games and they want to see a superstar, and you know we had Otani boths like great. You know, fans really want they want
to see a winning team. They don't want they don't know Otani's great. Everybody loves to see Otani, but they want to see winners. You know, if you traded Otani the deadline and made a tough choice, a choice that I think any smart baseball operations executive would want to make Yeah. I mean, they've probably been a lot better position right now. So it's but
they're not right. They trade. In fact, they traded away some of their best prospects, their two best prospects of the White Sox, for players that they ended up, you know, putting on waivers a month later. So that being said, when you look at the roster this year, I mean, realistically, and the guy's not going to invest any more money,
what kind of season can they have? Yeah? I would say this every year, Like I think if you, if you squit hard enough at the Angels roster every single year, you could look and you can pick out Okay, there's the pathways to them being good. After the last season, I told myself, I'm never going to project the Angels to be a winning team until they prove they can do it. So I mean, I'm not gonna do that. I'm not gonna sit here and tell you I think they're gonna
be good. To fight to predict something, I'd probably predict somewhere in the range of seventy five to eighty wins. Even that is probably optimistic, and at the end of the day. I mean, like you said, they won seventy three games last year, and then they lost a player that, you know, the greatest player in the sport, who is basically worth nine wins according to fan Grafts or Baseball Reference or whatever. So I mean, at that point, I mean, you're you're you're losing some good players and
you're not adding enough. I mean, I think their bullpen they've done They've done some good work to building a bullpen in this offseason, but they haven't really done anything else. You know, you're banking on guys who often get hurt, stinks healthy the whole year, like Rendo and and Trout and even some of the fringe guys and some of the rotation pieces that you're just hoping
have a bounce back season after a really bad year last year. So they've won seventy three games two years in a row and haven't had a winning seasons in twenty fifteen in fifteen years. So at the end of the day, I mean, it's hard to predict that they're going to be anything other than a you know, a below five hundred club for the for the for a
full decade now, and then to add on top of that. How difficult is it going to be when you look up the road and all of the excitement, all of the eyeballs are on the Dodgers and what they're doing every single night. I mean, that's got to be with the guy with the player you had. Yeah, yeah, I mean, listen, I think the Angels, I think I'm it's like an Angels fans. I think the Angels like to at least already likes to view himself and likes to view his
team as being a rival to the Dodgers. And and that's partly why they're called the Los Angeles Angels. For some reason. The Angels are not rivals with the Dodgers, right. The Dodgers have won ten and of eleven division titles. You know, they they've had some struggles in the postseason, but
at the end of the day, they're getting there every year. They're putting themselves in position, they're developing players, they're running a completely competent operation from top to bottom, with full well, fully staffed departments and everything that you know a contending team needs in order to be good. That's why Otani went there, if I had to guess, right, like, that's why he
went there. I mean it's not it's teven hundred million dollars is great, But and then the other thing is why is already not willing to pay the deferred money at this point? I mean, that's it's to me, it's there's there's just there's no there was no thinking head. There is no you
know, plotting or planning, and yeah, it's gonna be painful. I think for Angels fans to see what the Dodgers do, and you know, who knows baseball is a weird game and anything can happen, anything can go one way, break one way or the other, and you know, own be there with much shocking thing on the planet if the Dodgers aren't as great
as everyone says and Angels aren't as bad as everyone says. But I think for right now, in terms of the excitement, and I think in terms of the overall just blueprint for how teams get built, the Didgors are a million times ahead of where the angles are and Signy really close. You know. The thing I just can't get past Sam, the thing I just can't. We're not gonna trade outon We're gonna hold on to him. That's what we're gonna do Okay, great, and then they get the last chance.
All right, this is it. Are you guys in? Here's the number? No, we're not in. How can you say no? How can you say we're not in? If you didn't trade him, why would you hold on to somebody and then not sign him again? That's the thing I cannot figure out. And he's given you and he's given you a team friendly deal exactly. That's the thing I don't get. It's like and I mean, the one time I did get to talk to already on the record was last spring, and I literally asked him and I said, would you be
willing to go over the luxury tax? Would you be willing to make the competitive offer that it will take to retain o Tell? And he said yes, And you know that was that was a pretty strong, forceful answer. And then it came time to actually do it, to actually pay him, and they and Otani's agent Nesbiela, Uh, you know, I asked this after a Toni's press conference, if you know, if they if it came
down to money, and it basically did. Mean at the end of the day, they went back to the Angels to to after the Dodgor's offer, they went back to them. I don't know if Atani would have ever signed with the Angels or not, but at the very least they were they were willing to engage them in a in a you know, in a negotiation. It sounded like and the and the Angels were like, no, we're not
They just don't want to do the deferred money. It sounds it sounds like and I just to me, it's this is what it takes to retain the superstar. So I totally agree with what you said. If you're not going to do that, and that's reasonable. If you don't want to pay seven hundred million dollars, you don't want to do the deferred money, you don't want to do what it takes, then you have to trade him because you have to be able to not let him walk for nothing. And that is
exactly what happened here. They let a superstar walk for nothing, and not only that man had him on their roster for the last two months of the season when he was hurt, which I mean, you can't blame the answers for that part, but all you can do is is you know, you could have seen it coming to some extent that that. It was just it
was not going to pan out the way they wanted. The Angles were in a tough spot, being just three games out of a playoff spot last year, so I think it's justifiable that they you know, didn't trade him. But at the end of the day, I mean they made They've made wrong moves every step of the way in this process. And it wasn't justed to deadline last year was the deadline before. It was the last offseason. It was a miss offseason. There's just it's just a lot of missteps. And
this is where this is where it got him said. He's on there. You know, he's playing in their market for the Dodgers, and the Angels are sitting here, you know, with with a team that could really use a couple of really good players. Sam. We appreciate you coming on always great Thanks man, of course anytime. Guys, I appreciate having me all right, Sam Blemo the athletic. Yeah, that's ahead scratcher that it just that, you know what, for as long as we do the show together,
I will never figure that out. We're not moving this guy because he is the team and you better believe that he's going to be here. Okay, well you didn't trade him. You should have traded him. You should have got those pieces. Every By the way, we don't own it, so nobody has to listen to us. But universally everybody said trade him. All right, you didn't do it. Here we go. It's your chance. Right now. Are you in or out? We're out. You can't
be out. You can't be out, you just can't. That will go down into one of our most confounding decisions, I think in the history of Los Angeles sports. Seriously, and I've been here a long time, just one of the most confounding decisions. That's probably now that I think nothing for you know what, that might be number one, that might now top the
list. And when you talk about the great sports moments in LA history, and I think most people acknowledge it was Kirk Gibson's home in the World Series, all right, you know, and there's so many, But when you think of the confounding blunders in LA sports history, I think the Angels have just assumed the mantle and probably will never be surpassed. They they own the
throne of the most confounding decision in LA sports history. Elevate your wing experience for the big game with Chef Merito's Chicken Wings, hot seasoning, Chipotle or lemon pepper to bold choices for your flavor packed journey. Spice up your wings with Chef Meurto at Volorda today. When we come back, Vick will have spirituality. Oh my god, Oh my goodness. Yes, Rogan will see you again. Go get him, big, Go get him. Oh yeah, Vicky, you know this, Ronnie turned out? When will I see again?
You're at the wrong point. That's a great song. Are we just friends? Vic? That's the question. Is this the beginning? Where is this the beginning? Or is this the end? Vic? It's the beginning. It's the beginning of a beautiful thing. Will I see you again? You again? When will I see you again? Yeah? Where will I see you again? You get it? Get it? Oh that's beautiful. It's really a love song. Yeah, and there's still plenty of love after Valentine's Day, Fred Rogan, Hello, Vic, A big smooch to you.
Thank you, Fred. When when I see you again? How's the desert? Everything good in the desert. Big things are fine, everything's great. Thank you. You know I was with Rodney yesterday. We were together. Where did iHeart? I know it's very odd, unique and singular. Yes, yes, Vick, Yes, well he is love twenty four to seven. He is Rodney Pete and his love Allah Captain and to Neil, We'll keep us together. Do that to one can never get in. Come on now, Oh I said, you can love some captain in Toil.
Uh huh remember Captain and to Neil on Soul train. That was freaky, but I loved it. They had a lot of soul Captain and Toil. Yeah they did. Don King knew the Great Don king Don like Don Cornelias. I was about to say, Don King, I miss something? Did I miss something with the captain? I was so enthralled with captain to deal. The Great Don Cornelius the Don King thesaurus. You ever see the Don King thesaurus? I haven't seen, though it's ever growing, I'm sure.
Now, can you pull that up on YouTube? Type in Don King thesaurus see if it exists on YouTube. We did a bit. It had to be geez, what thirty five years ago? Maybe longer? I thought, Don King Thesaurus. Yeah, it says all credit goes to Fred Rogan in the Hall of Shame. Let me cue this up. Yeah, you got to hear Don King thesaurus because that was funny. Don King's hair, of course is legendary. And I remember he had a condo on Wilship Boulevard many
years ago. I'm not sure if he still has it. And we did it. We did an interview with Don and I said, Don, I've got to just touch your hair please. Your hair is such energy vic of course you could touch my hair. Yeah, so I talked, you know, I said, okay, Don, I'm going in. I'm gonna I'm gonna touch your hair. You know. We hare the TV cameras rolling and I felt Don's hair. There was there was an amazing energy to his hair. I mean the way it stood straight up. It was so beautiful.
Then you grabbed it and made it your beard. Well, I didn't go that far, but I felt an amazing energy, an amazing surge from from Don's hair. Hey, Vik, you want to hear the Don King posaurus? I'd love that. Go ahead, Yeah, But the chemistry here of Bob, Aaron and I coming together to work in unanimity, friendship and zeo, it is unsurpassed in the imagine this world. Now you can be a master of the King's English. That's right, Don King's English, because for
a limited times you can articulate extemporaneously. Put the davelof there on that I'm the president, Don King. How about the you can find ways and means to circumvent abiding matther law, and it would be uphill anywhere in his country he has the don kings of Saurus can turn you into an earl of alliteration, a duke of discourse, a veritable vice roy ebrivasity, Jesus says again and scored a cootie of top. You need a word for dear, fear
not Don King might say disquietude, apprehensivity, anxietasity. Need a word for outbursts? How about paroxism, convulsification. I'll might one make an inquisition regarding the acquisition of this voluminous treasury of treacle. I'll kind of get dun King to Serrus. Simply assimilate and absorb the information now being presented to you on your video presentation unit. We're sorry, inquiries from English teachers cannot be accepted.
The don Kings of Saurus acquire one fourth wily not available were prohibited by law. And then don't you ever forget it? Don't you ever forget? This is a great country. Brilliant, that's great. Fred is all brilliant. The only thing missing is from k tail Oh god, we used to call it from fred coo fred co Oh yeah, oh god, that was. I just laughed listening to that. God that was. That is a brilliant, brilliant bit. Well, thanks to Don King for making that happen.
Now, his command of the English language is untenable, unreachable. It's only in his realm. It's command of the language. And so it's real. It's wonderful, really is. It's it's incredible talent. And when I talk good loving and I asked my family doctor just what I had, and he said good loving. It's Roddy Fossio a prescription for a high coup. Y'all. Come on now, you guys mentioned one hundred and three and a half wins for the Dodgers as the vegas projection over or under. But let's
face it, it's all about the Dodgers camel back ranch. It has never been like this, The electricity, the buzz is really it's so off the hook with Otani sign you have a Moto sogn you're glass now and all all the the fresh talent to go along with the incredible foundation that has previously existed for all these years. So what's over one hundred Japanese media members and of course every moment of Otani sign you have a motor soign is recorded and chronicled.
But I love what Dave Roberts said. I just loved it, and it's so true when the first full squad workout came together yesterday and Dave Roberts with the mantra, embrace the idea that people are coming after us, and to paraphrase the sense, embrace the idea that people are coming after us. In other words, leave your front door and confront ten thousand enemies because everybody wants a piece of the azul got to bring that vital energy total thos ds
total those notice and just to keep it claro. Embrace the moment, Fellas, flip it, twist it and reverse it, as the fabulous Missy Elliott would sing. I mean they are ready, they are ready to rock. If any team can embrace this kind of attention, were on a global level. It's the Dodgers, so it's still early, is of course spring training, but what a great vibration coming out of come back rage. No, yeah, it's reverberating throughout the country. It is throughout the baseball worldfread yeah.
I mean to imagine what's going on in Japan. I know, Roder, your son is living in Japan. I know he's Yeah, he must be giving you some some reports. What's going on in the vibe is crazy, Vick. They already he was already a god over there, but the fact that he's wearing the blue people are going nuts. There's not a day goes by. There's not an o Tani report reference to Otani. He's on
billboards all over the city of Tokyo and all over the country. It is just a mad mad love affair bigger than it ever was before, simply because he moved forty miles north and wearing the blue and looks so good in the Dodger uniform, doesn't it. Just Yeah, I mean he's a he's a he's a large dude man. Remember he said sixty four. Yeah, I think he is. He's much bigger. Just a wonderful sight to see in
a Dodger uniform and again signs limited interviews is really no big deal. You know, as it's pointed out, the Dodgers have to make one day a week o Tani Day where he could spend time with the press. Well, it kind of is a big deal, VIC, because everybody's answering questions for him now exactly, So you have to formulate, you know, a game plan for Otoni Son, you know, once a week it's all you need. No, Vic, people are asking his teammates questions about him every day.
Oh, I understand that. I think that would that would dissipate if atony Son had one day a week specifically where he would speak. I don't think it'll dissipate at all. Well, the excitement will be there obviously twenty four to seven. But you can't expect a tiny son every day to hold court. I mean it's possible he might talk more. I mean he had that policy that he put an institute it for himself with the Angels, But the reporting I've seen it really hasn't been reported one way or the other.
How often he will or won't speak to the Dodger media or to the daily media that covers the Dodgers. If I played for a terrible team with the Angels, I only want to talk once a week two, So that could be part of it. What do you want me to say? We suck yesterday, we suck today, we go suck tomorrow, but damn it, I play my best. Well you want the guy to say so, Kevin Oh, being honest? Okay, Fike, I feel your pay No.
As an Angel fan, I understand what you're going through. This is this is a rough spring training, first time in seven years without O Tony Son in ten p at Diablo, and suddenly you're just dealing with rebuilding basically and reloading, well not even reloading, just rebuilding. I mean the Angels haven't reloaded in fifteen years. Yeah, so I understand your frustration and all Angels fans frustration. I mean, it's basically troudy and pray that Rendon doesn't doesn't
get injured. Again. They're not quite the Oakland A's, but it sure seems that way, not that far off. It's so insane because there's still talent in the free agency market just out there that would immediately help them. Yeah, but Addie Moreno said he's cutting the payroll. They're not just going to spend money to spend it, Vic. But they need pitching. I mean, but they've needed pitching for it for you know, for a decade
and a half. All right, Yeah, you'll have to continue. We need to hear about the pitching they need, and we'll get to that and the high coups. We continue, and book Vick knows this one too. Hey, Roddy p Fred Rogan Vic the brick Jacobs come on now, you know, and boogie, Yeah, turn it up, Ronnie, let him go boogie won the land. Oh come on, that's not the one, Okay, come on, Vick, boogie, boogie, oogie, y'all. Boogie that might be the wrong one. Get up in boogie y'all. Well
you know who's getting up and boogieing at at the Riviera today. Yeah, you're a man Tiger Woods. Tiger Woods. He's the host of the tournament, and you've mentioned for the past two days, what an uh an awesome responsibility that is. I mean, my god, every morning he has to serve everybody breakfast as the host of the tournament. I think he actually prepares meals for the entire field and then he plays as the host. It's an
awesome responsibility, big And he's also caddying for Patrick Cantley. I mean, there's a lot going. He's multitasking Fred. Through sixteen holes, Tiger Woods is won over at the Genesis Invitational today. Got off to a great start with a birdie and a couple of bogies and basically back and forth over paw
level par under paw and now he's won over through sixteen holes. Here's about nine shots back of Cantley, the former brut but the beautiful weather, Pacific Palisades, sensational terment and Tiger went over and fellas briefly and pain and anguish and angst for all angel fans again you mentioned it are these staying pat He's not going to pay for more free agents, so good luck, good look in Anaheim and you know again, hopefully Ren Dollan stays healthy. Lakers sensational
run. Remember Hatchie morris On with the career high thirty six and bliss out on the brow. Anthony Davis, again playing at an MVP level, had thirty five. First time in twenty years since Shaq and Kobe, Kobe and Shaq, that two Lakers score over thirty five in Utah. I found that pretty amazing. It is amazing because history dictates the Jazz rise up and beat the Lakers in Utah, and the Lakers don't play well in sold Lake City.
You know there's no tranquility at the tabernacle. But last night listened to oh wait wait wait, wait, wait wait wait wait, time out, there's no tranquility. He thought he'd stake that one in. Yeah, you're riding off of that Don King vibe from last segment there. I'm inspired by Don King. No tranquility at the tabert that one from you, Vic, Yeah, that's a good absolutely Listen, it was a fabulous run again. Kudo's Hachi Morrison. But how about d'angela Russell career high seventeen assists. I'm
the balls moving around, man. How can we don't call hi D'Angelo russell Son. No, boy, it's not Japanese for it. Come on, fred Hevic, can I tell you something? Of course? Elevate your wing experience for the big game with Chef Merito's chicken wings, hot seasoning, Chapotle or lemon pepper, two bold choices for your flavor packed journey. Spice up your wings with Chef Meurrito at Bayarta today. The chef is you, that's right. Tell you what? They got some spices over there, Vic,
that's Chef Merito. I've had them. No, that's station. I have a Vata supermarket right down the block for me. That's why that's where I go. Do you have a Valarta supermarket as well? Vyota supermarket right down the block? I know, but there isn't there also a Blerta. I don't believe there is, Frett, no Yota. What are you doing for it? Jeez? Are you guys just loving Spencer Dinwitty? Last night?
We were in love with him two games? Yeah, I know it's a small sample size, but already he's he's contributing scoring, and he's feel he's feeling the flow of the Lakers. Already I'm very very happy with Spencer dinwitdy Well, yeah, for two games. Let's give it a little time. He's got to be good, but let's just give it a little time. Vick. Well, they've won six or seven, sixteen of twenty one, thirty and twenty six coming into the All Star break and they're balling for de
Hammond. They're kicking tokus and having fun. I mean, did you guys see how Chimura and then with he partying on the bench last night in Salt Lake City? That is rare stuff, y'all is rare? Is it rare? On partying on a bench in Salt Lake Yes? In victory? Absolutely? You mean a park bench? Otherwise why would it be rare? Yeah, people don't see the lake or bench. Fred, Guys celebrating and being happy that they're winning, going to blowout in an NBA game, I feel
like that's not Salt Lake City. No, why you're not. You're not allowed to celebrate in Salt Lake City. They don't do it much. Fred. Over the years, how many times have the Lakers blown out the jests? You can count them on one on one hand. Are you saying Lakers don't celebrate? Are you just saying people don't I'm saying the Lakers don't beat Utah much in Utah. To blow them out was what was? Uh? Who's worthy of having some fun? I thought there was a rule against that
that That's what I took from it. Mm hmm, Well there's no rule against it. Fair but if you could, if you can crush a Utah team in their own house in Salt Lake, you deserve to celebrate.
