After establishing his palace, David proposes building a temple for God, but Nathan receives a divine message redirecting this plan. In what becomes known as the "Davidic Covenant," God promises instead to build David a "house" (dynasty) that will endure forever, with David's son constructing the temple. God further promises to relate to David's heir as father to son, maintaining steadfast love even through discipline. David responds with humble gratitude, acknowledging God's sovereignty and unmerited favor toward him. This pivotal covenant becomes the foundation for messianic expectation throughout the rest of Scripture, finding ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ—the eternal "Son of David" whose kingdom has no end and who builds the true temple of God among His people.
