Episode description

Joab perceives David's longing for Absalom and arranges for a "wise woman" from Tekoa to approach the king with a fabricated case resembling David's situation—a son who killed his brother now faces death. After securing David's protection for this hypothetical son, she applies the principle to David's relationship with Absalom. The king recognizes Joab's involvement but permits Absalom's return to Jerusalem with restricted access to the royal court. After two years of this limited restoration, Absalom forces a meeting with Joab by burning his field, eventually securing full reconciliation with David, who "kissed Absalom." This superficial restoration without addressing the underlying justice issues or Absalom's character foreshadows the coming rebellion, illustrating how even well-intentioned reconciliation without genuine repentance creates only temporary peace—a principle Jesus would address in teaching that true reconciliation requires addressing underlying wrongs.
