Riot Act

Riot Actredcircle.com
If you’re here then we’d like to assume you are a music fan with impeccable taste, and appreciate the job we’re trying to do in promoting the very best in alternative music. Both Stephen and Remfry (that’s us) have written and spoken millions of words about our favourite bands in everything from The Independent and The Guardian to Metal Hammer and Team Rock Radio, and beyond. We have dedicated large chunks of our lives to passionately promoting our favourite music, but never has there been an outlet that offers us the opportunity to rep for all the many genres of alternative music that we adore. Until now. Whether you are a fan of brutal death metal or wistful singer songwriters, three chord punk rock or sprawling prog epics, we believe that music in all of its forms deserves to be celebrated. So we started Riot Act to do exactly that. This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

46 - Steve vs. God

It's an absolutely monumental week this week, partly cause there's a lot of brilliant new music out but mainly because Remfry's gallivanting off to that bloody Europe next week and alas, he won't be present to wax lyrical about it all for you. But we have another treat for you all in store next week...more details on the show. But nevermind that because on this episode are reviews of new albums by Baroness, Dinosaur Pile Up, The St Pierre Snake Invasion, Bokassa, Heart of a Coward and Jambinai. ...

RR07 - Type O Negative - Dead Again

Steve and Remfry sit down to discuss the seventh and final album by NY gothic doom merchants Type O Negative. Whilst the album had a decent critical reception, Dead Again is rarely given the credit it's due, with most media attention focusing on the (admittedly brilliant) Bloody Kisses and October Rust. But Dead Again, whilst not perfect, contains some utterly definitive and fascinating insights into Type O Negative and more pertinently Pete Steele. Released three years before his untimely death...

45 - Heroin for Christmas

This week on Riot Act, Remfry watched some live music in the form of Alexisonfire at Ally Pally and The St. Pierre Snake Invasion at The Black Heart and Steve watched some "live" music at the Bring Me The Horizon day of All Points East festival who brought with them a veritable bunch of other bands who, for the most part, don't seem to understand the basic concept of live music. New albums come courtesy of Jane's Addiction / Porno For Pyros legend Perry Farrell, Pelican, Motanka and Pleaides and...

S13 - Alexisonfire's George Pettit and Wade MacNeil

Remfry sat down with George Pettit and Wade MacNeil from Canadian post-hardcore legends Alexisonfire just a few hours before their massive headlining show at London's Alexandra Palace. They discuss the band's reunion, their first new material since 2010's Dog's Blood EP (in the form of singles Familiar Drugs and Complicit) and what the future holds for the only band ever. 44 - #5iveForSlamDunk2020

Steve and Remfry both ventured out to their first UK festival of the year in the form of Slam Dunk. They bring you their review through a very heavily Riot Acted-tinted perspective (i.e. atypical). Speaking of festivals, they also discuss a couple of interesting additions to the Glastonbury line-up and Steve reports back from Wembley Arena where he saw grunge-metal legends Alice in Chains. Album reviews this week come courtesy of Her Name is Calla, Cave In, Royal Republic and Cursed Earth and Tr...

43 - No Mash to Heat Up Your Beans

It's a bumper week this week what with obtuse Scottish arena rock botherers Biffy Clyro shocking us all by releasing a new album in the form of a soundtrack to feature film Balance, Not Symmetry. Steve and Remfry cast their critical eye upon it, as well as new albums by Rammstein, Morrissey, Destrage and Petrol Girls There's also sad new to impart from the Slipknot camp and Steve has an unsolicited theory as to the identity of their new member, plus trade-off goes from the sublime to the utterly...

S12 - Guide to UK Festivals 2019

Steve and Remfry bring you their extensive guide to the UK festivals this summer, going through each line-up and giving their recommendations as to which bands you should see (as well as a few bands you should definitely miss). They cover Slam Dunk, All Points East, Portals, Download, Glastonbury, Tech-Fest, 2000Trees, Bloodstock, ArcTanGent and Reading & Leeds. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. 42 - Bonjour Saboteur

Bonjour is in an incredibly tetchy mood this week, doing everything she can in an attempt to sabotage the podcast and muscle her way in on the reviews. Maybe she's bitter about the fact that Steve's not been able to pay her all that much attention this week, as it's the first catch up show of 2019. And blimey Charlie there is a veritable feast of fantastic albums that the Riot Act crew have missed over the last 5 months. Steve and Remfry look back over 8 albums they missed by Sharon van Etten, I...

S11 - The Wonder Years with Dan 'Soupy' Campbell

Remfry sat down for a chat with Dan 'Soupy' Campbell from The Wonder Years to discuss their last album Sister Cities, an album that got to #12 on Remfry's Albums of the Year 2018. The record explores empathy in a tumultuous world and how we can find hope in difficult, politically charged times. They also discuss the reaction to the album a year on and if there's any truth to the rumours that Sister Cities might be the last record from The Wonder Years. 41 - I Can't Stick Up For Big Balls

There are new songs by Tool (and, since recording, a release date for their new album of August 30th) but Steve and Remfry don't wanna listen to no shitty phone recording fool! All the same, they find reason to talk about it cause ya know ... Tool! They also review new albums by Employed to Serve, The Get Up Kids and We Never Learned to Live as well as having a discussion around the new Amon Amarth album and their proclamation that they would like to take the heavy metal baton once the Metallica...

RR06 Frank Turner - England Keep My Bones

Shout out to Elliot Holt for providing us with our sixth Rioteers Review in the form of Frank Turner’s 4th full-length studio album England Keep My Bones. It was a record of transformation for Turner in a myriad of ways; he played his 1,000th show, headlined Wembley Arena and christened his band The Sleeping Souls all whilst promoting this album. It marks the point where a punk with an acoustic guitar from Winchester managed to infiltrate the mainstream and become inescapable, to the joy of some...

40 - Desmond Child’s Ho99o9

This week there's a plethora of great albums to discuss from the likes of Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes, The Wildhearts, The Physics House Band and a collaboration between Marissa Nadler and Stephen Brodsky. Steve also went to see Ho99o9 live, whilst Remfry attended shows by Restorations and Devin Townsend. This week's trade off come courtesy of Acid Bath's 'When the Kite String Pops' and Beach Slang's 'The Things We Do to Find People Who Feel Like Us' and there's a detour into mainstream po...

Steve is pitting Britain vs. America in Trade-off this week, as the quintessentially British The Verve goes up against rootin' tootin' Americana savagists Hootie and the Blowfish. Move over Mark Kermode. Eat your heart out Roger Ebert. Put down that popcorn Barry Norman. The Riot Act boys are in town and they're here to talk movies. But they're not doing so alone, as this week they're joined once again by fellow pod-caster extraordinaire (and movie fanatic) Matt Stocks. You wanted the worst, well you got the worst! Remfry somehow managed to secure himself another trip to The Netherlands in as many months, so that he could report back to you about festivities at Roadburn 2019. Space cake may or may not have been consumed. Remfry goes into details about the bands he saw including Cave In, Daughters, Mono and the Jo Quail Quintet, A.A. Williams and more. In an uncharacteristic move for an old cynical punk, Stephen Hill went to see Marks-and-Spencer-core fatigue merchants Doves and Mancunian poptastic royalty Take That and was able to make a surprising comparison between the two. Remfry went to the more usual Riot Act fare of IDLES and Memory of Elephants. The boys also review new releases from Idlewild, Inter Arma and Blood Command and this week's trade-off is DevilDriver's Outlaws 'Til the End, Vol 1 and Damien Rice's 9. See acast.com/privacy f...

Steve gets distracted this week talking about Easter Eggs, despite it being a full week before Easter ... maybe the sheer complexity and mind-boggling nature of this week's albums has gone to his head. And that's hardly surprising, considering the boys review albums by Periphery, PUP, Raketkanon, Waste of Space Orchestra and Town Portal. Remfry also went to see Black Futures at The Lexington in London and Trade-off comes courtesy of Royal Republic's Weekend Man and Scott Walker's The Drift. See ...

RR05 - Hawk Eyes - Everything Is Fine

Steve and Remfry discuss the third album from the perennially underrated Leeds-based alt-rock band Hawk Eyes, a fine suggestion indeed from Alex Ings. Everything is Fine heralded a simpler approach to song-craft for the band Steve once described as a mix of Foo Fighters and The Dillinger Escape Plan. The album received KKKKK in Kerrang! when it was released and was streamed ahead of its release on The Independent (courtesy of Remfry natch). This week, Steve and Remfry pay tribute to Scott Walker who passed away on Monday. An innovative and uncompromising artist whose career encompassed everything from 1960s pop to a collaboration with hooded Seattle doom-merchants Sunn O))), Walker was a huge influence on a diverse range of artists including Radiohead, Pulp, Cult of Luna, David Bowie, Brian Eno, Goldfrapp, Opeth and Leonard Cohen. After our in-depth 45 minute interview, Steve and Remfry also provide a primer for Devin Townsend for those who don't know where to start with his mammoth back catalogue and finally g...

The deluge of great albums are starting to break through the dam of mediocrity that has been 2019, as Steve and Remfry review 4 new albums from Karen O and Danger Mouse, The Cinematic Orchestra, American Football and La Dispute. Remfry also went to see Jamie Lenman, Bob Mould and El Moono and both gents went to see Svalbard and Ithaca. 33 - The Metalcore Femidom

Steve and Remfry are joined this week by two of the most controversial and contentious figures in the history of metal music... well, according to the comments on Metal Hammer's Facebook Page. The two gents attempt to get to the bottom of how two people that don't even have one penis between them(!) could have the audacity to front extreme metal bands. Unbelievable! The quartet also discuss the rather worrying trend of people investing more money in music memorabilia than music itself, which lea...

Steve speaks to Winston McCall about Nick Cave, his reception in Australia compared to the UK, his peerless lyricism and McCall's favourite Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds album Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus. They also discuss how Nick Cave influences Parkway Drive and in particular how the last NC&TBS's album, 2016's stunning Skeleton Tree, directly shaped The Colour of Leaving, the final song on Parkway Drive's latest album Reverence. Steve and Remfry pay tribute to two musicians from polar opposites of the music spectrum this week, after the passing of The Prodigy's Keith Flint and Talk Talk's Mark Hollis. They discuss the impact both musicians had, one who united people across several genres and one who changed the face of modern contemporary music. RIP Keith Flint and Mark Hollis. On this week’s Riot Act we have a very special guest in the form of Conjurer’s Brady Deeprose, who appears to have come on the show purely to correct Steve and Remfry’s pronunciation. What a tosser! On Riot Act’s seventh special, we welcome fellow podcaster Matt Stocks on to the show to talk about music media, and how it’s changing rapidly before our very eyes. What role do podcasts have to play in music media? Why isn’t rock music well-represented in the mainstream music press? Is print really dying? And how exactly did Steve treat former BBC weather forecaster Michael Fish when he was invited on to Steve’s show on TeamRock Radio? All these questions answered and more. Matt Stocks has been...

Remfry’s a little err ... spaced out this week after a last minute trip to The Netherlands with ‘most horrible band in the music industry’ Conjurer has left him slightly frazzled. Oh and his tooth ruddy hurts! Steve’s alright though, although he does have a bee in his bonnet about early 00s indie rock. Too right frankly ... it's all shit! RR03 - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Murder Ballads

The ninth album from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds consisted of new and traditional murder ballads, songs that deal with crime or gruesome death. It seemed a very un-commercial move for an artist who had two years previous reached his commercial peak-to-date with 1994’s Let Love In and its accompanying singles Do You Love Me?, Loverman and Red Right Hand. Despite its morbid nature (or maybe because of it) Murder Ballads attracted a number of guests including Shane MacGowan, PJ Harvey and Kylie Min...

The boys also recount their experience watching ‘the most metal show of all time’ in the form of At The Gates, Wolves in the Throne Room and the mighty mighty Behemoth tones, whilst elsewhere Remfry casts his beady eye over live shows from Cancer Bats and Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes.
