Google on Veil's a brand new Gmail. Mrich Tomirow. This is Rich on Tech Daily. Google says it's time for a refresh, and that's exactly what it's doing today with Gmail. The company is revamping the look and feel of Gmail on the web and in their apps, and they're adding lots of new useful features. Yeah, it's gonna take some getting used to, but I think you're gonna like some of them. It all looks inspired by Inbox, which was Google's last attempt to revamp Gmail, but that never really
took off. It was optional, so not everyone switched to it. But I think Google picked the best features out of there and built them into the new Gmail. It seems like these changes will go live for everyone at some point. Right now, I still don't have access to the new inbox, but you can check for access by going to Gmail, clicking the little settings gear in the upper right hand corner of your email list, and then looking for Try the new Gmail, and don't worry. If you try you
don't like it, you can always go back for now. Okay, so the first thing you'll notice is that files and photos are surfaced front and center in your inbox. So this is really handy. Let's say you have a big, long conversation with someone, right a chain back and forth, and at some point you asked for a file they sent it to you. Well, now instead of looking through all those different emails in that chain for that file, you'll just be able to see it front and center
in your inbox, so that's really easy. Next up, you'll notice a snooze button, which is really handy. Basically, if you get an email that you don't want to deal with right now, you can snooze it just like you would an alarm, and it will pop up again at a later time, and you can say when you want that to pop up, whether it's morning, afternoon, evening, or maybe a specific time as well, so that's really cool.
There's also finally a dedicated tasks app. So I don't know how you operate, but basically, as I'm going through my email, I'm building a to do list off of my emails, and that requires a lot of different things different apps. I write some of them down in a planner, but now that there's a dedicated tasks app, I can finally cut and paste little pieces of information that I need, things I need to do, and it's all integrated with Gmail. Now there is a separate app. It's called Google Tasks.
You can download it right now in Android or iOS. But the cool thing is that you can also get a one click link to it right inside Gmail. There's also a part of Keep that is right in Gmail, so now you kind of have one screen for all of your organization and productivity. I love that. Another future I think I'll love is the nudge. So how many times have you had a back and forth conversation with someone and then all of a sudden, one of you goes silent. Most of the time, it's me because I
just forget. Well, this is really cool because Gmail will notice that you are talking back and forth and you didn't say anything for like a couple of days. So Gmail will actually nudge you to respond to that message. One of the futures I love on mobile is now available on the web. It's called smart Reply. Google basically scans your messages that you're getting and will come up
with certain replies, so they call them smart replies. It'll say, if someone says, hey, let's do lunch Friday at eleven, it might sugg asked, sure, no, can't make that, or how about Friday at twelve and all you have to do is tap once and you can send that right on to the person. I find these really handy. Another feature high priority notifications on mobile. So basically Gmail is going to figure out which are the most important messages
and then send only those notifications to your phone. And this is pretty smart because a lot of times the first thing I do at Gmail is turn off all notifications on my phone because I just get too many of them. But if they can surface just important emails from like my boss, or my wife or certain friends, that'd be really cool. Gmail is also going to start suggesting when you should unsubscribe from newsletters if you don't read one for a while, or maybe offers you no
longer care about. There's gonna be big bold warnings about suspicious emails, so that's really smart. A lot of times these phishing emails look pretty sly they slip into the inbox, once in a while, there will be big bold red warnings to say, don't do anything with this email. And finally, the feature that a lot of people talked about because it was rumored for a while now confidential mode. So this will allow you to remove the option to forward, copy, download,
or print messages. So let's say you're sending something that's sensitive via email, like I don't know, a copy of your driver's license or a tax return or your Social Security number. You can say this message is not able to be forwarded or copied, or downloaded or printed, or you can make it expire after a set amount of time. Now, I gotta say all this with the caveat of think about it. Anything that is sent through email can be screenshot. The person on the other ends could take a picture
of it. So confidential mode does not mean it's fool proof. It just means it's a little bit tougher to forward to a bunch of people. Google says, as of today, certain people are going to start getting it. But here's the deal, these things always roll out slowly. If you want to try to get it right now again, you can click that little settings gear in the upper right hand corner of your email and look for try the
new Gmail and again. You can go back at this point, but at some point you probably won't be able to. I can't wait to dive into the new Gmail. Tell me what you think.
