On September 5, 1778, Major General Charles Grey landed a column of 4,000 men at New Bedford, Massachusetts to suppress privateering. The column marched swiftly and destroyed all of the maritime trade in the harbor and many of the support facilities on shore. Unfortunately many houses and shops were destroyed in the conflagration. They marched on to Fairhaven looting and burning as they marched.
