¶ Welcome & Episode Preview
What is going on everybody? Stubbs here from uh the from the old retro handhelds. That's the place we're at. Uh you're back for another After Dark episode tonight. We're gonna be chatting uh with a good Benny good friend Michael Benny. And uh and Mr. Andrew from our team. And we're gonna look at both this crazy, crazy price jump for the Steam Deck.
Also, uh, look at these rumors over at Computex. I'm gonna be flying out to Taipei, Taiwan tomorrow and be covering that with Rob and Russ and the dudes. Uh, but in the meantime, there's been a whole bunch of rumors and leak. And we're gonna just talk about that. And also like what handhelds does someone travel with if they're flying like twenty hours or something, you know? So I I got my bag packed, so I'm happy to share that too.
¶ Hosting Duties & Personal Brews
Uh it should be fun. And actually, uh in a twist of events, Mr. Michael Benny of uh Retro Lunch is gonna be helping us host tonight. Uh he's got some uh things prepped and kinda guide us through, Mr Mr. Benny. Leo, what do you got in the docket today for us?
I've got I've got a lot of jokes, but uh but but I I th I've usually never talk for this long, so let's see how it goes. I probably should have uh brought a glass of water or something. Nah.
Yeah. Just when that's what we do.
Well I have been known every now and again to to crack open like a tall can of Sujano, but um
Yeah.
There's but there's a dangerous thing that I learned, which is that if I have one, I'll break out of my shell, right? I'd be a little bit more a little more loose with my words. Two, my jokes start to get a little bit more mean. Um after three, you and I are having long conversations about how they are destroying the country.
Well, I'm game for y whatever you want. Wha all of that. Uh d do you do you have a cold Sujano with you or what what are we doing?
Yeah, that again just to the for talking, I probably even herbal tea something. I wanna have that soft silvery voice that you had for that uh episode with Kay about how there's not time and then how there's not enough of it. Oh
That was so much.
Watch that, please go watch that because it is. I was I told Kay and the um on our Discord I was inspired. I wish I could do that.
Really man? Oh he did such a good job on that. Uh it was a fun collab. I didn't know that anyone watched it though. I didn't I didn't heard feedback about it. So that's uh thank you. That was yeah, that was that was a fun collab. We got to narrate. help write a script all about uh we don't have enough time as adults to play games, but yet
¶ Steam Deck Price Shock
There are ways, and there is still wonder to be found in this hobby, even though the freaking prices are through the roof. What is this? A freaking valve. is coming in here and they're saying, you know, we saw we we thought the steam machine might be reasonably priced. Now I'm thinking not so much. They went from$650 for the top end OLED model uh up to$950. This is crazy.
This is just how much stuff costs now. You know, next thing, old man, you're gonna tell me about when gas used to cost a nickel. Like I think
say that. You can't just say, Oh, this is what things cost now. We can't I you know, I I tried to say that to myself too. I was like, Oh, AI, this is just, you know, this is just how it goes now. We gotta lay off But there's things that could have been done. I this is a this is a bold move, Cotton. You know, we're gonna see how this works out for them. But they over there, and like you're saying, they are destroying the country as as involved.
Because they're giving the other brands permission now to raise their prices. That's what I feel like. How do you feel? What are your feelings inside?
¶ Alternatives and Valve's Strategy
Multiple. So no a couple of things. I will I will say yes, I condemn this. I officially I condemn this. How dare you?
Um how dare you.
With that said, um we have alternatives. Remember for a while it was the Steam Deck and the Win six hundred and you had no other options. We have the beauty now of options.
And now you have the Steam Deck uh refurbed as an option, but that's now they're all sold out. Even that though got raised in price. You're looking at 760 for the one terabyte OLED there. I for a split second was gonna pick one of these up and I said, nah, I'm not gonna enable this. I get it.
¶ Justifying High Costs
Parts cost a lot of money, but I feel like there could have been a different strategy. Like what's the play here? Well what is the play? I'm
I am not the couple of things that are going on. Um and some of some of this was was, you know, stated in private chats and also with uh with two loud and folks over on the safe state podcast a little bit earlier because of course this is the big topic of conversation. And for me it's
Um
Some of this I think is in preparation for the steam machine and the fact the steam machine is not cheap. I mean the controller came out and it was about at least twenty dollars more than I think we anticipated what we thought the highest cost would be.
The raising of the price of the Steam deck means that the price of the Steam machine, which will be high, is almost a little bit more palliable because we've already made our piece with well, I guess just this is just how much stuff costs. The um Does the
'Cause you go you can get you can get an ASUS ROG ally base unit with about the same equivalent power of the Steam Deck for five hundred dollars. Ha uh uh about half the price. If you go open box, absolutely half the price.
So keep in mind how AY AYN is or um yeah, AYN with the Thor as and the owner being a little bit more transparent than companies typically are, these things goes in batches. Right. They go they go in waves. It could be that they have simply sold through the batches that they had. And the thing which told his advoc devil's advocate, I am open to the hate. Bring it on. What I will say is Y'all are lucky they're still producing Steam Decks because this is just the cost of parts.
And you could say it's not a good value, and I would agree with you. But there's a couple of things that the Steam Deck does, which even the stuff which runs SteamOH doesn't do, which is the trackpads. Now I personally I enjoy the trackpads, but I could live without them. I use them every now and now and again for navigation. I have never once actually used it in a game.
Money there.
Yeah. And part of me is actually even concerned about using the steam controller because I don't want to accidentally touch the track pads right when I'm playing a game. It feels like they could be right for your you know, your palms to to touch it. I was you know, I was told by people who have played with one that it's not a problem.
¶ Steam Deck's Platform Legacy
But yeah, the the values aren't there. The other thing to consider is that in my opinion, I have no insight whatsoever. I feel like Microsoft took the Xbox and Ace took the Xbox like strategy with the Xbox Ally X, and that's why they're able to maintain the price, which is that they bought their minimum order quantity, the MOQ, really, really high. They overproduced. We know this because there was a ton of them sitting in open box, especially the Xbox Alley, not X, just the original.
But yeah.
There's a ton of them. They they effectively overproduced it so they could sell each unit cheaper. And I suspect that there's still a ton of ally X's still out there, either on store shelves or sitting inside a warehouse. And since they already bought those parts. They may not do another batch because they already overproduced batch one.
Yeah, I mean and now we're looking on the eve of Computex, which I'm sure we're gonna get a second gen ally at this point. Something's happening, I'm sure. Uh and and we'll have
You know, some something would be nice.
Yeah, we'll we'll know any time now. But four hundred and sixty, you know, four hundred and sixty seven, uh even starting here to four hundred fifty bucks. Half the price, you know.
Yeah.
Power.
Yeah, it is the same, effectively the same chip as the Steam Deck. It's that same six year old uh APU. It's here's here's what I will give Valve credit for is that by kind of blazing in with probably even a subsidized price for the original Steam Deck.
Yeah.
developers a spec to optimize around. Which means even if you are on the Xbox Ally, you still get to inherit the fact that people are still optimizing a their games towards that SKU because there was just enough Steam decks that were out there. We know we heard this with Forza Horizon six, right? They they they made sure that it skewed down to at least that, which means you should see the same benefit on the Xbox Alley.
¶ Next-Gen Hardware & Valve's Vision
Andrew, what are your thoughts on all this? I haven't e uh I haven't heard from you on this one.
Um I'm kind of in the camp of I'm surprised that they they're still making them'cause they were out of stock for a a while.
Yeah, I thought they were done. Maybe prepping for Steam Deck Two.
Yeah, that's what I originally thought. But that was also I think we started seeing stock waiver before Ram again and really like started hitting us. Like we had heard rumblings, but it wasn't in full effect yet. Um, but then that just all got thrown out the window with You know, Valve said no. We're not we're not working on it yet. Or we're working on it, but it's not there yet. Whatever. They're waiting for the right chip.
And I honestly I applaud them for that because this is a platform. We always had like from RDNA two to RDNA three, minor spec bump. You go from the sixty s um six eighty to the seven eighty to the eight eighty minor spec bump. You jump into the HX three seventy, minor spec bump. The only thing which felt like it was a generational leap. was the HX395 AI plus. But you're also talking about what is the fact that like a desktop class chip with desktop class power requirements.
Yeah.
I think that's what I think ultimately Valve would want to put the three ninety five in it, but it's way too expensive for them. Even or Ramagan notwithstanding.
Or wait for R DNA five. The thing which I'll actually give Valve credit for is
We don't know how much RDA five's gonna cost. It could cost even more than what the three seventy or the three ninety five costs.
Cost but like economies of scale are gonna happen eventually. Like whatever the the costs are, like that's just what the next platform is. The thing which I would hope for, which is still unknown, is you would hope that devices with RDNA5 with that level of power have the power efficiency. You don't have power and battery efficiency in 395 plus. Like I want to see a more efficient chip power wise, which is intended for handhelds out of RDNA5.
¶ The Cost of Gaming
Like that is that is my goal. And it would be great if it had the s a same or similar level of power of three ninety five AI plus.
You think
Is this realistic though? Like is it realistic to expect that that the that that we're it's it's being normalized.
Or DN5 is just a software platform, again you could put as many compute units whatever as you want on top of that. It's uh it's it's hard to say, but uh my imagination is that We will see efficiency with that next duration of chips. And to Valve's credit, they treated the Steam Deck, they could have gone iterative, they could have done a new platform every single year. They treat it like a console.
Right. We're already four years into it. Was it two thousand twenty two? We're in two thousand twenty six. They'd probably not do the next one until two thousand twenty seven. Five years of console life cycle. Now, my concern is actually a little bit around the Steam Machine, because like I said, it's important for software developers if you sell enough units to have a software platform to target.
Yeah.
It's it's just uh this is just it's just too ridiculous. I mean, when when is it when does it stop being a hobby and now it's really so it's something else now? It's anxiety inducing uh maddening and it's like I just want to boot up my console, play some games, and now I'm thinking about like, well, should I play? Do I really want to put wear and tear on the battery today? Do you like it's like a
a car or something at this point, you know, it's so valuable. I'm afraid what's gonna happen with my Steam Deck OLED. I had that feeling of like, well now's my chance to buy a backup because I love my Steam Deck so much. Uh and I was like, no, I can't do that. I can't do that. I just gotta baby the current one I have. That's the smart move. But then like
You know, and that sucks'cause I w I wasn't worried about that too much before. Even used you could pick'em up, but now the used prices up on eBay and everywhere. You see that? Like the scalpers are having a heyday right now too. It's like, Oh cool, now we can price our scalped units at like fourteen hundred dollars.
¶ PC Handheld vs. Desktop Experience
What?
Credit to the R H marketplace. I got a a Steam Deck L C D two fifty six for like two hundred bucks back when they were you know, the OLED was coming out and everybody was ready to liquidate. And
Smart.
Not knowing.
How good we had it.
Everybody was coming to play in that market. And I say that yes, we do have to baby these things and be a little bit more precious with them. The good news is that there's a ton of inventory out there. It's not just the Win six hundred and, you know, some odd INE on GPE devices, right? We we there's a There's a lot of stuff which is already available, but like I was able to PC game before the Steam Deck. I will continue to be able to PC game after the Steam Deck.
Mm-hmm. And as much and and the reason why they will never invite me onto Handheld United is because I'm not fully a believer in like PC handhelds. If I wanna play a game I typically want to play the best version of that game the best way possible. And my my desktop is better than almost any handheld out there.
¶ Windows Handheld Woes & Linux's Edge
Yeah, you c I mean you can and you can stream from your desktop and enjoy it on one of your handhelds on a g on a G Cloud or or similar. Uh I think though this kind of moves us into the territory of the new chips being announced because that is even more we could we could sit here and complain about Valve's move for the entire hour here and I'm sure it'll it'll continually come up.
Uh I there is a sense of yeah, Valve had to do what they had to do. And I do like I that's where I I know I'm gonna settle on this. It's like, hey, it's not their fault exactly, although they did make the decision to do this. At least they're making more units. The new ne the the new units have a much higher cost.
But at least they're making them. But the Steam Deck for what you're getting this many years later is not worth Even the seven hundred and sixty dollar, the five hundred and twelve gig price, it's not even worth that much, you know. Uh if you can get that refurb like 64 gig base L C D model for$279, hell yeah. Put in a bigger SSD if you already own one. Don't buy one because that's overpriced now. Uh and
That's probably still an entry point if you really need a Steam Deck. But so many people now are gonna be going to other options. I mean you got the Legion Go S, which is the prices for the roof, but if you can find those use, they're still okay.
Uh the hobby's just being torn apart. Then you got game native on Android. Android is seemingly the only platform that's making any damn sense right now. Uh and even then, it's like we are early days, but we're still able to play PC games competently now on some of these higher end Android handhelds.
So hey.
Lightweight.
Battery efficient. Mm-hmm.
Mm.
Yeah, there's a game coming out tonight. I think in like a forty five minutes I forget what it's called.
Of the mean of the hollower or something. Ban was going nuts on that.
That's been apparent that's been apparently like I guess like a ninety I it's a retro platformer, like uh like a Zelda style, um, I think.
I've heard about too. I think it is I don't know if it's gonna be worth the hype, but it is definitely like worth your attention.
Like I think it's like a ninety-six or ninety-seven rating. And that's not a small feat.
Wow. Oh oh it's a yacht club game.
Trouble night's trouble night level lineage, so.
Yeah. Yep. Shovel Knight has such a good legacy in history about it that people are willing to back it.
I didn't even know it was by the shovel night team. I just Even though it says it in that paragraph, I still didn't read that. I just I've had the page open all day'cause I
I'd I get it.
reminder of I I want to pick this up but I don't know how much it's gonna cost.
It looks so good. How m so how much is it anyways? Uh wish list. So we don't know. It's just it re it's released in an hour.
Yeah.
I'm gonna add to my wish list, uh I guess.
Mm-hmm.
Well,
Tell us your password. Come on. Everybody who's bought a retro hand file from you has your Steam Deck.
Yeah, Mr. Benny, come on now. No, no, no. This round of uh I let I let go some of my PC handhelds in the last week, and I really hope I wasn't logged into any but I double checked, so we'll see. It's all right, people can uh can play all my crazy Steam games.
If you want a good low, I just found out that one of my favorite games, Courtesy of Ben, is on sale. Cast and Chill.
Oh yes.
on sale for thirty percent off on Steam right now.
Yeah, but
And they just had a huge update apparently. I didn't even know.
And Mina's only twenty bucks is people are saying in chat. Yeah.
Oh then I'll okay I'll grab that.
Easy, yeah. I figure Ban already had it on pre order, but well I guess you can't pre order it. But who's gonna buy it first? We're all racing to see who's gonna add it to the library. K's got it right. Well, you can't force a you can't force that guy to do anything.
I did want to make one more comment about the Steam Deck before we move on. I just grabbed this off the wall, the pegboard behind me for the first time in a few months. I forgot just how like comfortable this is to hold.
Right?
It's just
It's right. They got it right. Right at the gate. They got it right in 2022, way back then. We've been trying to iterate on so many different handhelds, like, oh, the now the new Asus is out. Now the MSI is out. Now one X player. It's like I keep at the end of these rounds
Everybody should have just
Yeah.
Give me this and I'm good.
I
It's just so nice. The only thing I regret is that I missed out on the transparent color. Like the transparent limited edition they did.
But you still got the etched glass one there, I can see.
I yeah, I did get the I did get that, but I s but I couldn't I forget if I I don't remember what happened. It was years ago at this point. But I just missed out on like the transparent one and I wish I had got
You really want that one.
Thank you.
Which one is that a w that's a one terabyte?
Um I might have tossed something bigger in here. Let me look.
When when did you get that one? I don't even remember when you got this.
It was right around the time I joined R H, I think, is when it came out.
Yeah.
I got a two-tailed by driving here right now.
Oh wow.
And a one terabyte S D card. I did not realize. I don't use this very often, but I'm not getting rid of it unless it's like a straight trade or trade post cash for the the transparent one. And it's gotta be like the same condition as mine.
Yeah, if any of you out there are are sitting on Steam Decks, I do recommend not selling them unless you're absolutely sure that that's not gonna be something you're gonna use because they do they're they're just No matter what AAA games you're gonna miss out on, there's so many good indie games in the Steam library to enjoy. The freaking thing, you pick it up, battery life is awesome for what it is. It's always ready to go.
Here's what I realized about Windows handhelds, Andrew, is that this week I let some go because Every single one, dude, every single one. I've spent an hour or more updating window every time I boot it up. I wanna play a game. No. First thing I'm doing, I'm updating firmware, I'm updating BIOS, I'm updating Windows, updating drivers, up software, games, you know?
Steam. Could be nice if you could just bundle that in. Yep, we could just bundle that in all together.
Why am I always updating? Why's I do updating?
Linux and Steam Deck has the ability, they they have they control the driver stack independently, right? So they are able to just bundle the client updates with the driver updates, everything it's a single interface. You don't have to go through multiple apps. Like it would be it would be nice.
¶ The Friction to Play
Yeah. You know, everybody could consolidate on that for Windows and for other platforms too.
I I just said forget this, you know, forget this. Get get out of here, Apex, get out of here, Win Five, get out of here claws. I have no claws right now. I have no claws. No claws. I'm clawless. Because I was sick, I was sick of it. Just it took so much time to get through to actually get to the game that I realized like How much is this worth? Like my how much is my time worth? You could.
Just say screw it and like do this. Basite on it.
Well, yeah, and that's the other thing. So I got it, I got the F1 Pro that I'm trying out, Bazite on there, any handheld. that I can get some Steam like interface, turn it into just more of a console like experience, that changes the game. And yeah, you yeah, I know you can do that on on these, on the allies especially, the Lenovo's. Uh I kept my my Legion Go S because Steam.
Except the one that was formerly my Legion Go S that I saw.
I believe so. I bel yes, sir. Yeah, that one because it's ready to go. Anything I can put bazite on, I'm cool to keep. There's at least one claw I know you can do bazite.
Well there's also so I I mentioned Baslight'cause that's the one I have experience with, but there's also Cashio S, which apparently is like
Cashie's good.
My rocketing and I haven't tried that one yet. I need to try it out.
That's right. It was also r you know around the same time when Baza was coming up.
I think Kimir's still around.
Yeah, it's still around. It just seems like it's got less less momentum in.
Well, so I mean you can also basically if you have an AMD handheld, you can basically just put basite on it. There won't you will probably run into s some potential driver issues. Um
Okay. No, we we I mean time is one thing. The other thing is just like friction. If you have the momentum even if you have the time, the momentum it takes to just pick something up and start playing is one of the reasons why I just enjoy like the budget handheld space. Especially things like anything like Onion OS where you just you turn it on and it's your game is already ready to go, is because
Uh time and momentum. The more time I spend updating, the more time I don't know if I have ADHD, but I just get easily distracted, like, oh I'm gonna go put this down and then I'm gonna go walk into another room and there's three more things that I have to go pick up and then yeah.
¶ Steam Machine Platform Concerns
If you're in this hobby with us, you have ADHD. And we have one of the Ds anyways. There's w hm.
I got a big my my my arc is right back there. Oh no. Did you do that? Somebody did that. Well, good night everybody. Thank you. Thank you for joining us.
That's what's fallen by.
While while Stebb is gone, I did wanna say one last thing about the the Steam Deck, even though the uh the as it relates to the Steam Machine coming up. Oh no.
🎵 Music
Have a great time.
Continuamos.
I think I think I think Sony's hiding back there somewhere just just pranking us.
Yeah, he's in Japan. I saw him editing the podcast on the plane on his w on his F one Pro.
The um the thing which I'm concerned about with the Steam machine is it relates to all the stuff going with the Steam Deck is we talked about the Steam Deck being consistent platform.
If the Steam Deck two is not going to be the same platform as the Steam Machine, then what are the developers going to target? Because now you're talking about three different platforms we could optimize around. If they don't still sell enough Steam machines because the hardware is old, then It's gonna be a fine desktop PC, but I don't know if you're gonna get the same benefits as the Steam Deck, where it's you're gonna get devs games optimized specifically for that platform.
Well he's another speaking of that like Forza's optimized like you can play Forza on the Steam Deck.
On the team back, absolutely. They sold enough of them to make it worth our time.
the well the chip from twenty twenty two.
And I'm okay with the lower power hardware. There is a value worth it to me to pay a little more money for the experience of the Steam Deck, uh, because the you yeah, you know the developers are optimizing for this hardware. So there is value there, but nine hundred and fifty dollars is not is That's beyond what we can recommend.
Almost as bad as the Z two Go, which is basically the same chip as this the Z two Go Legion Go S being seventeen hundred dollars or fifteen hundred dollars, whatever it is. Like whenever Lenovo just did their huge price jump on all of their handhelds.
Bird of Art has given us permission to like Valve. It is okay to like Valve.
I don't blame them at all. It sucks, but I don't blame them.
Well the move here feels really like uh the the move here really feels like uh They're like, hey, we know everyone really wants Steam Decks. We want to provide you with Steam Decks. Unfortunately, this is what we're gonna have to charge you for new Steam Decks. So do you want Steam Decks or not? People probably were like, Yeah, we want Steam Decks. We're like, all right, here's Steam Decks.
This is what it costs us to make them, and we're gonna make some money back from the software you buy from us, but we still have to charge you for these parts.
¶ Steam Machine Price Speculation
I think it's them softening the blow before the machine.
Yeah, what do you think the machine's gonna be at?
Twelve. It's starting at twelve.
I was thinking twelve thirteen. Yeah.
And you and Linus and everybody's gonna say I built a steam machine for half the price or
I'm not doing that video.
My server creator in the space has already done like 50 of them
No. I'll ask him about that.
I forgot.
Yeah.
Well sure we can all throw a mini PC together and throw Cashe OS or or Steam OS or whatever on there, but uh it's still not the Steam Machine. It's still not like the specific hardware that's being targeted by the developer.
Because that's t it's tweaked by d by Valve.
Yeah, it's it's unique. I don't think anyone can specifically make the steam machine except for Valve.
It's like you like the same the same thing with the Steam Deck. Like it's not you can't you won't find a handheld or a mini PC or anything with that chip and the GPU config because it's all custom it's custom built. It's based on XYZ, but it's
It can be custom, but it but it it meets there's a number of compute units on it. There's a number of CPU clock cycles on it, like that uh for when it comes to games to um developers developing for it, they they're gonna develop on that spec or not. And if not, then anybody which has a similar PC with whatever the the whatever the custom architecture is, it's based off of something and then they iterated on it. What do you think?
¶ Competitor Pricing & ROG Ally X
Think then about um well speaking of iterating and Asus I'm sure is about to iterate on this, but before that happens, what do you think about the the top end Xbox Alley, Xbox Alley X for a thousand bucks? This still seems like
They haven't changed the price, and I bet you they're gonna have to at some point here, or they have now permission from Valve basically, so maybe they will. I really hope they don't because they held strong through Lenovo's price increases. MSI did price increases now, not as bad, but still. Uh and ACUS is holding strong on five hundred dollars and a thousand dollars for their two tiers. Do you recommend do you think we could be recommending the top end Aliex to people here?
Given that it has some of those AI features, I think it's neat, but I can tell you like personally, if you are like me, I own a not Xbox LX, I own an R-O-G-L-I-X. You know, it is not something that I would recommend that somebody run out and go upgrade to. But if they're in the market for a handheld PC and they want something with a little bit more power, this would be one of the easiest ones to recommend. Who's like is entering the space.
And because it has that extra little uh MPU in there for the AI stuff and it's able to do that special what uh what is it? The new FSR, what do they call it?
Yeah, that's super super super resolution. So you'll get um
Super resolution, which so you get that for and then you're talking about doubling the price. So that's a thousand dollars. Doubling the price, two thousand dollars. You get the Legion Go too with beautiful OLED screen. Yeah, a little bit little bit bigger screen too. Nice. Uh but you actually get a worse CPU. It's still the the Z two E, but it's the one without that AI element in there, and so it can't do that fancy stuff. Uh and oh it's on sale for seventy five dollars off right now.
Yeah.
Put that money right back in your pocket for gas to get back and forth from Best Buy.
Hey man, you can get open box maybe, well, no, for seventeen. Mm you can get for eighteen hundred dollars right now.
Okay.
What a what a time to be alive, my friends.
¶ Computex Leaks: Acer Predator Atlas
It's overpriced. This is what we have.
But
But we're probably gonna hear a lot of stuff coming up soon, probably in the next couple of days.
Well yeah, this I mean this podcast will be will be ol old news by the by the time what Where are we at?
I wanna I wanna speculate so wrong. I wanna be so wrong when people go back to this and be like, dude, what were you thinking? None of that actually happened.
Yeah, I'd love to speculate hard and be'cause completely awfully wrong. Just the worst. I and so we'll see. But I'm sure that Asus is going to continue to sell these models. Maybe they don't have to increase the price on these models, but they're going to do a price increase with their new model, which has enough power inside to justify that price for for some. That's my guess.
So far, I mean they've they've they use the Z one and Z one extreme and they're using the Z two. I could be wrong and I'm willing to be wrong. I love being wrong, unless it's my wife and then I hate being wrong. Um
Same.
What I don't think that Asus has done a gaming handheld which has like the the classic driver system, like the HX three seventy or like the the you know six eighty or like any of those ones which has like the classic drivers. They've always used those custom chips and so If they come out with something new, like there is no Z three. Right. Like there is there is nothing in that lineage of Ryzen Jets.
Yeah but you can get it.
Cool. I think Panther Lake is awesome. I think MSI is doing a great job with their their partnership with Intel. And like we're talking about new chips getting released. Panther Lake is out there but new devices coming out. That feels like the exciting thing to see.
¶ MSI Claw A8 Green & Budget Deals
Talk about Panther Lake in a second here too, but look at this. Now MSI has their A eight, which is their Ryzen Z two claw. Uh and Z2 Extreme. And they have the green version available today. I forgot today was the launch day for that. So it's still in stock. Surprise, surprise. No one
Call Van. He loves green.
I know but twelve hundred dollars. It's tough. So two hundred dollars more for the Z two Extreme than the A Seusar G I. Xbox LEX, blah blah blah blah blah. Uh U1TB, 24 gigs of RAM. Uh some questionable ergonomics, but i it is green, sure.
It it is a shame what happened between the AI plus and the A eight like If they even if they just use the same shell with that ergonomics and put the Intel, you know, put the AMD chip in there, it it would have been better.
And the Go S here with the Z one extreme, fifteen hundred dollars, open box eight hundred. That would be incredible if you can find it for that price these days. I remember when it's like, oh, six hundred dollars is too much. I'll try to get it for five I remember buying that one for five something at one point. Uh and then even the Z2 model, yeah, it's still spendy, still crazy. If you can find the original original ROG ally, uh just the Z one version or the Z1 extreme four fifteen open box.
I mean that's more affordable pre crisis pricing.
Battery prices didn't increase. If you do the battery swap on that, it's a fantastic machine. Runs bazite really good.
You could do that. You could a hey, you could get a Thormax for six thirty. That's not bad.
And check that next week it'll go up. Yeah.
Talk about the new
You're you're killing me with with this game of uh shop best buy with stubs because man, I got credit card bills to pay off. You you're you're tempting me. You're you're an enabler.
I am. Yeah, I'm the worst kind. However That's all old technology in the garbage with it. Look at this. There's there's new stuff. Remember when A uh Acer was gonna do their Blaze nitro handheld? Never happened. Their new so Computex, well, Computex is the place Uh and we went in twenty twenty four last, I believe it was. That's the place you go for the cutting edge, the prototype stuff that we may never see. There was a number of handhelds
Uh that that just never came to fruition. There was a crazy one by uh what was it, Zotac that I was
Back zone. Oh get in the zone.
We got the zone. There was another one though. XPG was gonna make one. That's right. Another one that we we that one we did not end up seeing at all.
¶ Intel Panther Lake Specs & Windows UI
But maybe...
Maybe we're going to see this Acer Predator. And now why are they calling it the Predator? That's a concerning name. It does have that new ArcG3 extreme, which is the what we're calling Panther Lake. Uh is there differenti differentiations between Panther Lake chips? Do we get an extreme? And that's it? Or is there multiple tiers?
I think their branding is bad. I think there is a differentiation, but it's it's a it's like a bunch of numbers, like two, eight, five, four, like I'm playing bingo.
Just G three and G three X.
So we get two. We get two. Yeah, G three and G two.
G three's got the G three's got the B three seventy IGPU and then the um the the other one has the B three ninety. So it's not like uh the A M S I call M A one M
Mm-hmm.
Or whatever. Um, as far as I understand. I haven't done that much research into the ARC stuff yet.
Just I have not looked at it until just just tonight. So this is I'm like, I'm just gonna go react to this and let's see what's up with it. So we get two okay, so we do get two SKUs of it with the lower tier, the higher tier. Uh what's the do we do we know the performance difference between these two yet? Too soon to tell.
I haven't been able to I haven't looked. I don't know if there is. I don't know if I don't actually know if like Intel has formally um peeled the veil back completely.
Okay.
Like I know that they announced it.
We're we're about to find out.
Pant Panther Panther Lake was a known quantity. It's the the what's new is this G three and G three extreme, in which case I think they're we're still parsing that information.
Right. So you're getting twenty-four gigs of RAM. They're being mostly generous with the RAM at this point in the game. Uh you get eight inch screen, which I love, nineteen twenty by twelve hundred. I so I it's sixteen by ten. I wonder if that's the uh the Kalat eight. Screen and the
An IPS panel.
The Go S Oh it is. It probably is that panel.
I forgot to add that in the spec sheet.
120.
Mm. Supports VR feels very potentially deceptive. Either it has VR or it supports VR R on dis on an external display.
So I was also reading that off a spec sheet and a lot of those spec sheets are just like as boilerplate as boilerplate can get. Right.
I these are probably not the final eyes the finalized perfect specs yet at all. Uh the you do mention battery difference. So the lower end just like Asus with their allies in the last gen that you're getting two different battery sizes here. You get a you get a what is it, sixty watt hour for the low end, you get eighty watt hour for the high end. And eighty watt hour is gonna be good. Ergonomics look okay on this. Let's see what Acer
It actually looks better than I can do.
Yeah.
It looks better than their nitro blaze stuff that they showed off and then never released.
Something about that it never had any confidence in just because they they already had the Predator branding well before the the Nitro Blaze. And so I feel like that just kinda came out there as a like, well, let's slap an Astro na Acer name on it in the same way that Tencent was gonna do the Sunday Dragon, the same way that, you know, uh Absolute eventually released that handheld as the um you know, the X X three D one, yeah.
So they're calling Okay, wait a minute. So there's a predator and then there's an Atlas?
The predator is their R O G it's their like they have laptops.
Okay, it's their prefix. So it's actually called the atlas.
It's called the Predator, but they couldn't call it the apex. That name was already taken.
Taken. It's already taken. So it does say it offers variable refresh rate, forty-eight hertz and hundred twenty hertz. So it goes between those. Native landscape panel. You know, there there's a there I know I've been complaining about Windows a lot. There is that whole full screen experience, the Xbox mode now. That does make things better. It's a little bit lighter weight, it's simplified, it's focused at least, but you can't No matter how much you polish that operating system.
It's still Windows with all of its Windowsness wanting your attention on this, that, the other. It wants to advertise news to you about what's happening with the the geese migrations, you know, like in the in the start menu. It's like No, I just I booted this up to to play a video game, man. W why can't we go all the way? Why can't we go all the way with that? What's up?
Yeah, and there's even um on there's a dedicated Xbox button on the left and then on the right is a dedicated they call it the Acer really ha I know Predator has been their gaming brand forever. But it's their software's called Predator Sense and it just feels so gross to say out loud and to type.
Yeah.
It's just but anyway, it's their it's their take on a launcher.
Their their control panel. Hopefully they have some T D B controls or something nice in there.
Maybe they're Yeah, but maybe maybe they are offering something that's unique that m makes them they're gonna have to do something that makes them stand out from the other besides just having the latest, greatest. CPU in there. Uh and yeah, go tanks. Yeah, steam big picture mode. Absolutely. So I fake myself into thinking every handheld is a Steam Deck for myself by just always being in big picture, booting in the big picture.
mode, uh just to make sure I'm always using the controller and I don't have to ever mess with the keyboard or anything. But even then you're still dealing with windows behind and you know you are. You just you just do the battery life, the uh the the various little things you gotta deal with.
Uh and if you got a one X player, at least th the pro I was dealing with, oh man, you got a whole bunch of other problems you gotta mess with. You know, Windows doesn't always wanna start. You gotta make sure the temperature is cool enough to start the thing up.
It's just
The Steam Deck I don't have to worry about any bullshit.
You know, for classically I've always been that guy who's like, Well you know, push the glasses up once. No, you only get to play half the games that you want to play and doesn't do much.
Uh sure. Yeah. Not these days, man. You can stream it all on the Steam Deck. You can You can uh load up the you can play your GOG games, your battle.net games, you can do I think there's a way to do Epic now too. You can even put Windows on that damn handheld if you want.
I can I can work around Windows. I can work around Windows on a hand if I absolutely needed to, but I think what I've come to the conclusion of is that I'm I'm starting to optimize just around like Steam Deck and Steam Deck like experiences on handhelds. Just because if I wanted to play those games that I am complaining about, I just go to the PC.
It's fine.
¶ New Handhelds: G Cloud, One X Player 3
You know, I don't need that on a handheld. When I go to a handheld I want convenience and if I'm reduced to just the subset of Steam games.
think about messing around with the uh the G Cloud, such low powered hardware so much lately. It's so s because it's another handheld that's damn simple. More simple than any other Android handheld I have. Another handheld that you boot up, it's ready to go. It's ready to play. Uh I love that. I really do. One X player, another one here, also rocking the new Intel arc G3 Extreme, the one X Player 3, 8.8 inch landscape OLA display.
Yeah.
Apex is done with now, I guess, because they're finally doing OLED big time eight point eight inch. Yes.
I'm happy Int Intel's making deals. Remember MSI was like their only partner? In Intel is making those deals. Now they're they're go they're getting out there and more people are getting on board with the platform, which hopefully will increase Intel Arc GPU compatibility.
MSI can't sit in their laurels anymore and just say, oh, well, we're the we're the place you come if you want Intel. No. Now there's some really compelling, and I need all the brands to switch to OLED screens at this point with VR. 8.8 inch, absolutely. Um they also have the X2 Mini as well, so that's another one. And these are gonna be making their debut at Computex. I'm gonna go track down where these are because I really wanna see.
I and see what other PC handhelds I can turn into a Steam Deck and then go back to my Steam Deck at the end of the day. Yeah.
If they're announcing it, they have to be there. I did look at their official exhibitor list. So I think the company's actually called like One Netbook, you know, or like maybe they have one extra, but it did not seem like they have an official booth. But they like if they're announcing this at this time, maybe they'll be at the Intel booth. You know, like they there's always these partner booths which uh which have partner hardware.
You get 144 Hertz here, HDR, VRR, OLED, holy crap, micro SD card, mini SSD, just like their Apex. I mean this is This thing looks ridiculous. This is stacked from top to bottom. Wow. And sorry, Andrew, what what were you gonna what were you gonna say there? I don't rem I don't I I don't either, but look at the one X Player X two. Here's another one.
So that's from a month ago. That video is from a month ago. These two handhelds are almost identical because they're both three in ones.
Mm-hmm.
Um, they both have the same size screen, OLED, VR, whatever. The difference is that the X two Mini is more like the Apex. So it's got a swappable battery, it's compatible with that um
Oh, that barrel charger thing?
Uh the Frost Bay external liquid.
Okay, interesting.
That whole crazy thing, yeah.
Yeah.
But they're using AMD instead of Intel.
Yeah, it's using the it's the three ninety five instead of uh going with the G three, yeah ca like the G three extreme.
That's the distinction. Like that is the decision between the two. If you're I love the idea of a three in one. I've yet to to meet one which is like it actually meets all my expectations. Like God, you're almost there. You're so close. It could be so useful. But then it like sometimes just like as a laptop it's just not good enough.
I like I like One X player for the fact that uh a lot of their handhelds do seem to be Bazite compatible. Uh the one X fly, brilliant brilliant handheld, even with all its quirk.
¶ One X Player Pricing & Software Issues
you know, there's just something to having an OLED screen in such a small form factor that's so usable. Um, but only w for me, only with Linux. And Windows was just a is just a nightmare on that handheld.
And they're not providing extra any extra software to make it like more like you'd I think you're just getting like kind of raw windows.
You are, yeah. You're left to your own devices a lot there and I'm sure I'm upsetting uh one X player stands, but you know what? Uh So they're putting the uh the AI Max three ninety five in here for the mini. So then what do you want to go with? Do you wanna go this generation with a three nine five or do you wanna go with Intel's solution? I guess we gotta wait and see.
Get ready to get your wallet out.
Yeah, yeah, the prices, we haven't even talked about that. So these easily I mean okay, the Apex$2,300 to start. So where does that put us?
I pfft they haven't announced it, so I've got no uh your guess is as good as mine.
More information coming soon.
Yeah, we're upgrading to OLED now with and then all the other things. How much is Intel charging to license out that new processor or whatever? I know there's some there's something worked in there, uh, because the three nine five handhelds seem like you can't price them below a certain point. I've never seen'em below uh Oh I don't know, like fifteen hundred I think is the cheapest I've ever seen one of those.
See Andrew, you're just you're just thinking about the problem wrong. It's not three thousand dollars. You're paying one thousand dollars for a laptop. Do it.
For one thousand dollars for
Laptop.
Okay, leave that alone. Stub stand.
Free. I want both of them. Mail them to They're free. It says that customer is always right. If it's in Target, if something's marked wrong, then they'll give it to you for that price. So this is one X player's fault,'cause it told your programming here to market this way. So they do owe us technically everybody a free X two mini pro. You heard it here first.
I mean it shouldn't cost that much. I just heard about a ZFlow thirteen that went for like twelve hundred dollars.
But no, it does show free because it's not started yet. The campaign preview is up though, and you can look at that.
¶ Lenovo's Market Shift & SteamOS Rumors
So crazy. What else do we want to talk about here? There's so many little rumors about what's going on.
Yeah.
do you want to talk a little bit about the Alanova?
Well no sure.
So this yeah, the the new Legion seven five um laptops are out. It I mean to me it's it is kind of telling that leading up to Computex with their gaming brand, they are talking about laptops. Right. That to me starts to start justify the like, yeah, we raise the price on handhelds'cause we're just we want to exit that market.
Yeah, they were again they just they set themselves on fire and walked away. You know? Or they set their business on fire and walked away for the handsheld market.
Similar to the Steam Deck. Like it's if somebody told me something smart about a supply curve and a demand curve. And you know, at some point they will meet. And so if they choose to raise the prices but demand goes down but they're still buying them, then They're just not going to produce anymore and sell through what they have.
At least they're making a green laptop for that FIFA tie in.
Thank you.
That's awesome. In an era before PC gaming handhelds, like it's PC laptop, PC gaming laptops seem like it is still a larger market than PC gaming handles, because you can lie to yourself and say, No, I'm totally gonna use this for productivity too. You're not, but it's you can justify a larger screen and deal with windows a little bit easier in that more classic form factor.
And Lenovo's still claiming that they're gonna be re-releasing the s the Legion Go Two again, but with SteamOS. We we saw that rumor, you know, what, beginning of the year around CES. They did announ Okay, yeah, right. They announced it. But then we heard nothing.
It's been nothing since then. I forgot about it till today.
Yeah, it's like what, six months in here and now we're seeing that this is happening, but they're gonna be able to save a hundred dollars or so without having to pay the Windows license. So it'll be at least a hundred dollars cheaper than the uh than the than how it is now. So instead of two thousand, maybe it'll be nineteen hundred. But I really hope they somehow find a way to
Mm.
The same well remember those two versions. There's the Legion two with the Z two and the Z two E. They may just put Steam OS on the one with the Z two, but not the Z two.
Are they doing both? Are they doing both again?
Uh my suspicion is that they're only doing the Z two, but I could be wrong because that's what we saw.
Wait a minute. Wait a minute, you're right. You're right.
That's pre Rampocalypse. Is that it's supposed to be in June. If you look at this article, this was like in from February before everything exploded.
Yeah.
Yeah, this one.
leak first happen. So th this is all gonna be irrelevant now. But okay, so what they're saying it's just gonna be the Z two model.
¶ Qualcomm & ARM Windows Future
Uh, then they can definitely probably work it down to mm, they can't do twelve hundred, but maybe they could do thirteen or fourteen.
Hundred dollars less than whatever the current price is of the the Z two version.
Yeah, that's how it's classically been for their for their other handheld.
For I mean I'll give you the pitch for it. It's too much money, but for whatever it's worth, you are talking about that.
panel. Gorgeous. Yeah, I I'm upset. So that is one of the handhelds I ended up keeping was the uh the Legion Go two. However, it does have Steam OS already installed on it. So it's
Thank you.
I'm I don't yeah. I'm just pretending it's a fancy Steam Deck.
So I put this article on it is a bit old. You're talking about this article from December, but for me, what this was leading towards was a discussion around Qualcomm. So Qualcomm to me is a bit interesting because They're likely to do more with their um compute CPUs for less
Up.
Right. We already saw the we yeah, we saw the s the Snapdragon X Elite and and then recently they did the X two platform. I think they're trying to do an X two light in order to do lighter based, but what you're still talking about is ARM based windows. You're still going through the Prism layer, which is effectively Microsoft's version of Fecks, you know, or you know, or Proton or like whatever it takes to get X eighty six running on.
Snapdrag Snapdragon C.
No, that was that's something different.
Okay.
So that it that's actually that was announced today. Um that is for lighter weight laptops, so like really low cost, like net
Like. That's cool.
Um and so I suspect that this will be at the conference. Maybe they'll show off partner hardware, but at least yeah, OEM's including Acer.
Yeah. Yeah, because it's nice to have something between freaking, you know, a thousand dollars or whatever where it starts for the
Uh
the X Elite, X plus models, you can get as cheap as around on sale like five or six hundred. So if we can get something a little bit lower, uh, you're still getting that efficiency.
Cool.
I'm okay. I'm okay with I'm okay with more arm anything. Apple was able to make that.
transition because they don't make Intel based machines anymore. I think Microsoft wants to m make ARM happen on Windows, but that's like saying fetch and meme girls. Like you can say it all day long. It's it's not happening. No. Um but what my hobby
Yeah, make fetch happen, so that's what I learned. Yeah.
What a or at least it's not happening with the kind of momentum that they want because we're still producing X eighty six based windows. Right. You don't switch over the same way that Apple can just switch over and then everybody has to follow suit. What you get out of Snapdragon, like, well, why is it only Snapdragon? The other people have ARM CPUs, but Snapdragon is the only one that has actually produced a full driver stack, including Direct X support, Vulcan support, like all that stuff.
on the Windows platform. You're not getting that out of Nvidia and you're not getting it that out of AMD.
¶ NVIDIA's ARM & Linux Potential
Well what this NVI you talking about Nvidia. What is this NVIDIA? N one X. I saw this come up today.
Yeah, the other th this is all. Yeah. N NVIDIA makes um I mean typically we know them for GPUs. They do make CPUs. There's actually they even have a platform, um, I think it was called I gotta put it in my notes. Um Grace for the CPU and then they have a whole platform called Jetson for GPU stuff. And the nice thing about uh Jetson and they c like Jetpack is the Linux based
Right here.
Yep.
Jensen Harris. Um no Jetson like the cartoon.
They knew what they were they knew what they were doing.
It's not Android, but they have a full software stack for Vulcan and OpenGL and CUDA on Linux. So there is a version of this where that you know, Jetson for GPU and Grace for CPU, you could have an arm and um uh ARM based CPU with NVIDIA GPU on laptop hardware or um a um gaming hardware. But they're just not choosing to develop that. It's for AI data centers and it's for edge devices like advanced security cameras and drones and things like that.
Don't add my devices, but sure.
But the um this N one X like the Nvidia is trying to enter the same space as Qualcomm. with like laptop style ARM um chips, but more than likely I'm thinking it's gonna end up being focused on Linux and not Windows.
I'm good with Linux. I fell in love with Linux because of the Steam Deck. I mean I was okay with Linux all along, but uh never was like, oh, you know, I I need to use this as my gaming platform because it wasn't compatible with everything. It's so much better these days. I'm very okay with Linux.
The other thing which I'm interested to see from NVIDIA and frankly all these manufacturers that there's been a big momentum in the uh industry around something crawl and called open claw, not MSI claw.
on MSI Cloud.
I don't know if you've had any experience with it, but it's
No, no, but here's those Jetson modules. Sorry, I'm a little behind on this but
Yeah, so they not these are these are interesting, they're not for consumption by um handhelds. But it feels to me like it wouldn't be that difficult to adapt them because the software stack is there. So like this is NVIDIA's game if they want to choose to pursue it. But it seems like they're just you know, they did the Tegger platform for um Nintendo. I don't just interested in launching their own platform the same way that
You just stepped right over the NVIDIA shield. Come on.
I love the I've made a pitch for soling. You know how Ambernet clones devices?
Please.
Amber Nick, anybody, make a clone of the Nvidia shield and you will have my money. Like I want that thing which looks like controller and the screen flips up.
Yes, please. Yeah. The handheld itself didn't sell that many that many units. But they they did have a prototype that they were gonna make. They had a prototype for a a shield portable too and then Like five of them are out there somewhere. One of them's owned by someone in our Discord who I am waiting for him to uh write it over to me in his will. But um we'll have to see. Yeah, I like I like I like NVIDIA's w their tech that they put in the handhelds, how much efficiency we pumped out of that.
switch over the years. I mean, good God.
¶ MSI Claw 8X AI+ Leak & Design
So this Vera this Vera thing is interesting.
It would it would not surprise me if you end up seeing this or stuff from other platforms when you're at Computex around the sort of like like an AI home server. It's basically a just a derivative of OpenClaw, which is it's AI at home. It's a little box that's inside of your house at home. But the diff instead of you just asking it questions, it can write file like it owns your file system. So it can write files and basically do stuff on your behalf.
And what about uh what about those uh let's see, hold on. There was uh the claw. There's those new claw leak photos I want to look at too. I'm saying that's all over the place today, mr. Benny. But uh let's see here. So you see this thing? This is this is like breaking breaking, but uh
This is the Panther Lake claw.
The Panther Lake Claw. It's gonna be called apparently the Claw Eight X AI plus C D three.
Yes.
E. M. What?
Yeah.
Yeah.
So these names suck ass.
I know they do they do suck ass. Well I think what sucks us perhaps more is the fact that there's a screen hanging out past the handheld.
Remember the T J D one oh one? Isn't that what
No, I know, and I'm okay with it on the uh the PS portal too. I got used to it on the PS portal. Uh it's a it looks a little funny. I would prefer them to have like a stick at the top and the bottom versus just the bottom, but we'll have to see. At least they're putting a giant screen in there, it looks like. And are they doing OLED now? Is that part of the rumor? The leak here from video cards?
By definition from the I eight have an eight yeah, it's an eight inch screen.
Right.
That that's a more design aesthetic thing. They you could have closed that gap. It's not a bigger screen that justifies the vessel.
You look at look at the specs on the screen, nineteen twenty by twelve hundred, one twenty. That's the that's the same screen that they that's the IPS they already have in the claw eight. They're just putting new chip in there. But they did listen to our complaints
And everyone's complaints about the ergonomics of the eight AI plus and the A eight, I'm guessing, because look, they're giving us a more ergonomic focused handheld with big old grips. I wonder if that's gonna be Gonna feel a little bit better.
The eight AI plus the yeah, the Intel version, that wasn't bad. It was the eight the A eight that had the terrible ergonomics.
No, the eight AI plus is not my favorite for ergonomics either. I The the the A eight I like less, even less. Uh the seven AI plus is where it's at in the original claw design. For Ergo anyways, uh everything else he has up for debate. They're bringing the same D pad over though from the eight AI. It looks like here as long as this is an actual
Yeah.
product shot or final. We'll see. Uh it looks like the same buttons from the eight AI as well.
Mm.
Buttons those buttons are pretty solid.
I c I kinda get over what um A G Echam Mike said in the uh chat. It looks like it says clam instead of claw. It should not say it should not say clam unless it's a clam shell. That's not fair.
Oh man. Oh, it does look like Nixie Grips. Yeah, it's a tablet with Nixie grips. Good call. Oh, Mina the Hollower just dropped. Alright, everybody. Well, let's.
Yeah, well my banner is getting dropped. I'm gonna go download it, I guess.
¶ Computex Weirdness & Personal Preparations
Oh well.
Thank you.
This is I mean, I want to see more Intel stuff. Um, and I know they've already been the partner. It would, you know, they kind of have to do this. Could you imagine what like one X player releasing Intel and then like in their main partner with MSI not releasing one? Like it has to be done.
Yeah. It does. It does. I wonder what else we're gonna see at Combi Tex. We're also gonna see a bunch of really weird random one off uh brands that are are gonna introduce some handheld designs, I bet you just like last time. And weird
prototypes, right? Like fold up displays and stuff that will never actually make it to market.
I'm gonna bring I'm gonna bring my uh my Digi Osmo pocket three and capture some good footage for us to to repurpose and utilize. Andrew, I'm gonna try to take the best. Andrew like photos I can. I'll even bring a good camera just for you so you can have some stuff to work with. Is it C
¶ AMD's HX Platforms & Intel's Pace
Or Computex, which has the uh salacious adult toys also featured on the show floor.
Oh both, I'm pretty sure. I I can't remember real well from Computex. There was Both tend to be a blur for me. It's just a lot of people, a lot of technology so much dopamine exploding in your brain the whole time that it's it's tough to to keep blood in. That's why you gotta document as you go and then look at the end of the day be like, Oh right, I saw this. Oh, that was cool. This was cool.
Game. I figured that was more of a Vegas thing. I've never heard of any Americans traveling to Taiwan for anything salacious.
Yeah, I don't remember nothing sticks out in my memory about salaciousness. Uh there's no like, you know, crazy dildo games or anything like they made you do at at CES because that's what that's a Vegas thing. That's just what you do in Vegas. You you play dildo angry birds. All right. I just said the word dildo three times on this show. First time. That's the fourth. I'm gonna stop.
So going through my notes, I think that is most of what I we covered MSI, we covered Lenovo, Qualcomm, Intel. Um AMD, like I would I would love to see some like AMD are they mean they have the HX four seventy platform. Right. So in theory, there is another platform beyond the three seventy, which could get some attention, but they're already so focused on the MS, the um
HX three ninety five, HX three eighty five, and then you got the eighty eight and the twenty uh ninety two variants. And from everything that I've been told, especially by by the folks over on Handhelds United, thank you, GG. Skip the ninety two. Skip the three ninety two.
Okay. Rob, I'm not showing the footage. There is footage that exists of Yeah, anyways, I'm not no we can't show we're gonna get cancelled, Rob. Now come on, we can't we can't show sela salaciousness.
It's pickles, not dil dills does.
Right. Whatever Stubbs has said is wrong and don't listen to him. Rob has never been more correct there. That is exactly right. Uh, you know what's upsetting to me though, uh, Mr. Benny and everyone out there, is the fact that uh we're waiting this long in the game for Intel to release a handheld focused chip. I don't know why it took this many gens to uh to get there and it immediately makes me upset. Oh yeah, Mina loaded on your win mini? That's a win mini, right? Yeah. Yep.
Yeah.
Do you like it?
So far, yeah. Um it's quite nice having a laptop. I don't like the skin. I want to change the skin to something else.
You could just you can you just tear that off? That's just like a carbon fiber Yeah.
I might eventually, but I've left it on there for now.
Yeah, it's good to have some protection.
Mm-hmm.
Oh crap the kids.
Yep. You already got it on there.
Intel focused gaming chips. Well I mean, was the um the the series that they've come out with with MSI and just not doing it not good enough? Because I'm hearing really good things about Panther Lake. I don't know if it's gonna compete at that HX three ninety five level.
But
As a platform seems pretty balanced. And I really want to see what happens with G three and G three extreme.
¶ Future Chipsets: Strix Point & Medusa Point
I want to hear what you're doing. I wanna hear what the Fox has to say on this. Uh he's not gonna be at Computex and I'm really bummed about that, but we'll get his hot takes on Twitter. I know, I know, we'll we'll get his hot takes. We'll have we're gonna have to have uh Mr. Carrie Gollum on the show here again because you know he's got things to say on this one.
There's there's that and then also for everything you're seeing with all the excitement around strict point, there's a new buzzword happening around. I don't know if it's gonna be a copy text, but I wanna know more.
Vertical integration? What's the word? Medusa point.
I have to ASMR this Medusa point. Next next platform after Strix Point. And it's supposed to be very exciting in terms of the amount of power. And I think that was even the argument that the Fox put onto Safe State at some point, which is like, that might be a better platform for the steam machine. Like really Valve probably should have waited because we would get way more out of that.
Maybe. Maybe so. And also, Andrew, I interrupted you again two minutes ago. Oh dang it. See I gotta catch myself right away so you don't lose it. And I'm like oh It's like I have a quick thought to get out and then we both have a quick thought to get out and we all have ADHD.
I I love competition, so I'm I'm hop you're talking about Intel, just like not having like I'm hoping that if you when you get hands on with Panther Lake products, there should be a ton of them at the show.
That Yeah.
It it makes you a believer that Intel could actually be a player in this space.
We have another expert in the field as well mentioning gamers generation. GG says three hundred five has higher performance once you exceed roughly thirty-five watts or so from early reports. I'm not one to play above thirty five watts, sir. I like to stay right in that five to ten watt range on any handheld use. I'm usually playing indie games like I'm in my off time, so I'm okay. So how does the lows compare between these chips? That's what I want to know.
¶ Steam Deck's Low-Wattage Gaming & Android's Lead
Forget the highs. All these handhelds can get high. I want to get low.
I say for whatever it's worth, that's that's where your overpriced team deck still shines. Right.
You can get down to three watts if you want, if you're crazy enough, the s the OS at that point starts to
Mm.
doesn't have fun, but you could.
Get a lot of battery life out of that. I mean if you had a bigger battery, they'll let us bigger battery, but it's
I
You get a lot of better life out of that three watts if you're just playing indie games. But if you're just playing indie games, game native.
And again, like you mentioned, with game native, you can just push the power button or close the lid on your clamshell and it's asleep and it Barely drains when you pick it back up. The Steam Dex one thing is I just put it to sleep and I forget for sometimes a week. I'll pick it back up. The damn thing will have like maybe ten percent life. Maybe maybe more. Maybe it'll be dead, but um That's one thing I'm like, ah, Android. Android I think, Arm I in the end I think will win the whole thing.
Yeah. Maybe well we'll see what what Google does to Android because I w there was a time when you would look forward to new S releases and now it's just like, Oh no, what did they restrict now? What what why why am I unable to install or sideload or do the apps that I want to do?
Remember what Google did to every one of their other products they've ever released and then just shut down randomly without any remorse, like Stadia?
감사합니다.
I'm scared. I'm scared to keep my Google photos going. I'm scared to keep my Google keep notes not backed up. I'm just frightened at what Google's gonna do to my things because I'm so into that ecosystem.
Reset the password on your at Yahoo G uh Yahoo email account. I'm I'm sure it's still around somewhere.
Get Ugreen to fix your hard drive on your NAS and then install what's it called? Whatever self-hosted.
At the penaz?
Yeah.
No it is. It is the the P version. Yeah. No, you're right. You're right. And I got I yeah, I gotta fix that damn thing. Still using it. Yeah, it's still up and running. It just gets very h very hot'cause the fan is not very efficient anymore.
Upgrade it.
Yeah, I bought a Noctua. A Noctua? No?
That's what I was gonna recommend, but I'm sure uh Ben recommended it to you.
I believe so. Yeah. And so I picked that up mm a few months back and I just gotta install it and put it in. Uh it's it's the compatible fan, it should work. I just gotta Take the time because right now it just goes like a bicycle with playing cards in the spokes and it's maddening. So I like put it away f as far away from me as possible. It's just that little naz Yeah.
¶ Stubbs' Travel Handhelds
There's a request in the chat. Uh Matt Davis wants to see how big my penis is.
Nope. So this is a family show and unfortunately we are not going to be looking at that today. However, we are going to talk about what handhelds such a person might take on an airplane when they're flying a really long distance. A not a mini PC. No. But uh if you wanted to know, I always bring three handhelds when I travel. I bring something pretty powerful, something mid range. So it's usually like one X eighty six, one Android, one Linux budget thing.
Uh let's see what did I decide on this time that's in the other room.
This is a long flight, so battery life is a concern.
Yeah, so anywhere from fifteen to twenty hours. Uh as far as a straight shot from my Seattle flight straight to Taipei, it's gonna be I think fourteen or fifteen hours and then yeah, I got another I got a layover from Portland and some waiting time. So I think total trip is like twenty hours. Uh a steam deck. So the main handle I'm bringing and I'm loading up with everything is my Steam Deck. I love my Steam Deck. It's so low stress.
I know that it's gonna serve me well and it's just ready to play. I got emulation uh loaded up on there through uh through emu deck. I got uh streaming. If I wanted to do it, it's ready to go. It's set up with G Force now. You can do that and Uh I got I'm gonna get Mina the Hollower on there, thanks to Andrew's awesomeness. And yeah, I want I really wanted Bond 007 First Light on there. I played Rob's copy last night till way too late, and that is the freaking best.
Triple A game I've played in a while, man. It sucks you in. It's very linear, but it's so well done that it's just it's so good. And it even runs competently on the Steam Deck.
However,
For whatever reason, uh it's now not working and it says I need to buy it and it actually deleted my save file. So I'm very upset. Rob, what did you do? Did you refund it, Rob? Let me talk to Rob for a second. Rob, let's have a heart let's come let's have a heart to heart. Thank you for spending seventy dollars on the Steam Family Library so that I could play double oh seven. Oh oh you were playing it last night and it kicked me off. Is that what happened?
Well then it deleted then it said it can't seek my save file and it said screw you gets like go buy the game. Even today I went back to go try to play it again and said, No, nobody in your family owns this game. You will be paying for this now and it gaslit me and I know it's in there. I know Rob's keeping it from me.
No one took back the owner.
because I want to play it. Is that... Oh, no. We've never actually had ever had a dispute amongst the family over who gets to play what game, who gets to use the game. This is the first time and it's quite an experience.
Uh
QWEDY FEREX. I love my Steam Deck. Way to rub it interface is stubs. Aw man. I just I assumed I assume That by now that's people who want Steam Decks that probably track down some type of Steam Deck.
Um
Yeah, first light is pretty fun. Steam family rules changed. I'm gonna have to look that up. Am I gonna have to spend seventy damn dollars, Rob? Okay. Anyways. Be that's besides the point. I wanna load that on, I'm not going to. But the Steam Decks ready to go, ready to play. So that's not my big one. Uh the medium, you know, mid range, I'm bringing the Thor, is what I settled on. Clamshell.
It does what I want. I don't even use the second screen a lot of the time these days, uh, unless I want to do either multitasking or have a game guide. But I'm gonna do game of the month on there because you know, I can have a game guide. Uh and a great battery life if I just use the one screen too.
¶ Anbernic RG Rotate Unboxing
Uh and then for the small size, what did I pick? I th it was either the 135, which I surprised myself with. No, you know what I'm bringing?
Okay.
I'm bringing the PS Vita as my third handheld this time. The Vita uh one thousand man. Loaded up.
Hell of a device.
Yeah.
lead it is comfortable they would say like this d pad is the d pad of envy right for for every handheld which came afterwards like this is just
I I was playing Dr uh was it Dragon's Crown, I think it is. on the one thirty five and I'm like, man, emulation is great on here. You know, one thirty five is so good. Um Oh nice. Oh you got the overhead today. And then I was like, Why don't I just play Dragon Crown on the veto, no emulation, I don't need Wi Fi, I don't need anything, I can just
Boot it up and play the game. And on a trip where I'm gonna be focused in on getting stuff done, when I do want a game, I want the thing to just work. I do not feel like tinkering.
I do miss how good unfortunately it's not a battery, but I do miss how good this D pad feels. And yeah, like e Amber Neck did not emulate this. Right. It did not take the best aspects of the Vita, which is the the D pad and the sc uh OLED screen and pour that into their handheld. Which I will say for whatever sort of like don't you remember the Amberic model of something before something is released retail? Yeah. They um they usually have the
Uh yeah.
Like announcement for the next thing.
Yeah. I know.
What it will say I've got is
Do you have an inbox? Stubs nubs.
Thank you.
Yep.
New inbox? Yeah.
I don't even think. I tried another colour of the spikes and I just it's um That's an experience. It is. I'm not gonna lie. I'm I'm impressed that you willed that into existence, but um it is um excited.
Inside Podcast Joke became actual produced product. It's I believe it's still being sold by the maker. I gotta hit that guy up and see what's going on. See if there's any new revisions.
This for me, so the retail, I don't know if there is a difference between the retail units and the um the regular units, but this just came in today. R G rotate.
Thank you.
And I got the black mile. I don't I have to admit, for a long time I wasn't paying enough attention to the coverage. This um the black model, remember when they're showing off the original leak? This is a
It's not. It's solid black. Yeah.
People will like it better that way.
I'm looking forward to trying out the plastic model. It it is one I'm gonna try out at some point. Does it feel good? Is this your first time having one one of these, right?
First time having it. I'm looking at it's it's lightweight. I'm I actually eye this not not just for myself, but this is for my kid. So we get we started to get into the digital audio players. I got my son the M uh three hundred. I actually got like band's old one. He likes it. Yeah. I told him I'm gonna restrict him from playing Roblox. I told him if he tries to get an iOS device, it's gonna block from his iPad, so he got all mad.
And then my um my other son was like, Well, I want one of those and it's like, Well, this was coming around around the exact same time. Yeah. So I just kind of focused on like, Okay, well This is coming out, why don't we let this be your um DAC as well as having it play games? And as interesting my my ten year old and my eight year old, the thing which I love about my eight year old is that he's actually playing the original Super Mario Brothers.
And like playing the whole thing through, like for real. It it warms my heart that he's actually like actually legitimately getting into a retro game and enjoying it. And so he's up to world seven. Tell him how to use save states so he's actually having some fun with it. And so I think he's gonna cool transfer over to this and use it for music.
You know, if I had the plastic model, I probably would have brought that for traveling as well. I think that would be a good one. I I think
Better life too short.
I think that's a good thing.
Mm-hmm.
Battery life's very short, especially without a lot of custom firmware option right now. But uh as far as a fidget toy goes and an MP three player, you you got something all right there. Um you know what? I'm not actually using my RG rotate as much as I thought I would. You know, it it
It's neat. I like it. It's premium in a in a sense. I don't love it for gaming. I kinda like it as the as the dap a little bit. That's that's more I'm not with it. Maybe you can duct tape it to your wrist and have a watch.
Too heavy. Too heavy. I mean it's it's cool. I like the idea. You know, again, do you want the Donkey Kong watch that actually plays Donkey Kong, but I think it's just too heavy for that and it's even do the Pink Boy thing.
you know, like,
It's
It's a complete, you know, it's it's that's not something anyone any sane person would is gonna do. But I'm sure someone will do it nonetheless. Yeah, I I'm just not I'm not real hot on the on the rotate in the end. That's one where it's like, yeah, I I get this. I like that it's innovative, I like that it's original and they're they're doing something different, which is cool. And a lot of people do love this one. Uh I I don't know if it's one I'm gonna keep long term. Watch I certainly
They are they are ninety percent of the way there to a uh T Mobile sidekick clone. They need to just they need to just finish it.
They need to go all in.
They go.
Do this. They need to go all in. Yeah.
I wanna they're so close. I'm on board with there being fidget toys and handhelds. We saw this with the ALPC with a little soccer ball in the middle, you know, just go rotate that thing while you're waiting for a loading screen. But this is better. This this feels more more cathartic.
I like that aspect, but are you gonna pay are you gonna pay what, a hundred dollars plus for a fidget toy, basically?
Uh I paid I paid more money for dumber things, so probably. Um but again that's the I'm justifying this whether I should or not as this is for my kid. And if he destroys it it happens'cause it's The cheapest T six uh eighteen that you're gonna get.
¶ Budget Controller: Beitong Asura 3S
Mm-hmm.
Right. So to me there's some justification in that. And so at least he's not gonna play PS two on this. There's no D pad. There's no there's no uh uh analog sticks. No. But I can load on some shaders on here and not feel guilty about it.
It's all right.
It says finish. I go to system.
It's not ho it's not bad by any means.
you know, there there is there's some issues with it, but you know
You got a little ghosting on there, right? You got a little oversharpening, they're still working out, but
God save Gamma, he will save us all.
And the yeah, exactly. Yeah, the custom firmware is the thing where we're gonna be eating a little bit better on this one.
And I do have one more.
Oh yeah, sure man. Yeah.
So this An all Chinese font. It's like
Fifteen bucks or something isn't like a super.
That was just a thing, it was fifteen bucks. Right. And so for that, like I'm actually this is I'm treating this like a a madcats controller from back in the day. So like I for my own personal use, I use a 8 bitto Ultimate two. I don't really cover the news, but it seems like Apa Dill Ultimate Three was announced recently. Uh would be cool if that was at the show, but in either case, that's coming.
The free order. I I believe GameSer will be there. I can't remember if they were there before.
Again, yeah.
Check out all the booths.
For fifteen bucks I was expecting a wired controller. Like this as a um This is a wireless controller. Right, with all those features is nice. Now for me, what I appreciate is that that when you turn on it's got like these these red cheeks on it. So I'm saying that this has some Louisiana flavor to it.
Yeah.
You can aboot on Rouge.
Taste test for us.
Yeah, beta and rouge.
I all right, Mr. Benny. That's enough out of you now. Oh yeah
Red.
LED lights, that's fun and uh futuristic. So how does a fifteen dollar uh controller feel? You know, GameStore makes some pretty decent fifteen dollar controllers.
It does. This b this bayton is is good. It's got the back buttons. It's got something which the steam looks like the steam deck controller doesn't have, which is the trigger locks. You get
Trigger locks for fifteen bucks.
Yeah. The button, I mean the ergonomics are very good. It's got the uh the texture over here on the um the handles, which you didn't get out of RP six, so I'm grateful for that.
Uh Amberick also, yeah. Ambernik does have the P01 controller as well for fifteen dollars. The fifteen dollar segment's heating up.
Mm-hmm. D-pad's not great, but it's also in a position where I just I wouldn't I like I'm I'm not playing like this.
How do the joysticks look deal out?
Um I said the tension on them is good. Is that
Are those tension rings that let you adjust tension or is that just a design? Oh, no way. It
It's it's it's it's working. You know, I have to go through the manual to go through the fine details, but it it does look like there is something here.
Get tension adjustments for fifteen bucks.
Well this this was the thing, was it the um the handle we were just talking about from um the why am I thinking on the name? Uh Get in the zone. Uh the Zotac zone was supposed to have the tension like adjusters as well. Yeah. So that was special I handle. But yeah, for a I don't think it's available for fifteen dollars anymore. I think they probably sold to the stocks that they have, but this was a heck of a get. Right. For what, fourteen dollars after tax and delivery.
I wanna know how much you paid for that three fifty three P you got on the left there.
Well, if if you join retrohandhelds.org or uh join retro handhelds the Discord and you get access into the marketplace. You can get a handheld like this for probably as low as about fifty or six dollars. Actually don't remember what I paid, but this is in honor of my friend, your friend and everyone's friend, Zoo, who recently put out a video about the best handheld to play each system. And he did it with the DMG version, so he used the wrong version. I wanted to promote the correct version.
The correct the S N E S one.
play your your S N E S games.
Yeah, man. I mean, th that was a great handheld at the time. You know what drove me crazy and why I didn't keep that keep that one? I believe it was the the speaker buzz. That a really bad speaker buzzing.
Yeah.
Yeah, it was enough to drive me just a n just enough insane, even though I like the handheld otherwise. What dad joke do you have for us tonight?
¶ Gaming on the Go: Mina the Hollower & Travel Tips
Well let's see what let's see what this says. This is gonna the audio quality is gonna be about as good as the wizard pickle, but let's see what we got. Hopefully nothing with swear words.
Alright. All right, so we're gonna be removing Michael Benny from the stream. He is not invited back on the show, and this is his final time. It's been good. Salute. Andrew, what are you up to there? Playing some games.
No, I am updating adding Mean of the Hollower to handheld.deals because if you have humble choice, you can save four dollars and get it for fifteen ninety nine.
What? That handheld dot deals comes in handy. I was gonna grab the djembe and do a dud dut dud, but in the other room. So I can't they don't let me take the Jembe on the plane anymore.
Everybody's got
I know. I know. It's it's really tough.
Also, Mina the Hollower is on every platform. I didn't know that. It's on Switch, Xbox, PC.
Okay.
Switch two. There's a switch to the switch two version.
Oh wow. Okay. So it's that good. All right. Well obviously I have to load this on, play this tonight, load it on every all three handhelds, even the Vita somehow.
But yeah, if you've got uh humble choice, say four bucks, fifteen sixteen dollars.
Let's all talk about Mina. Welcome everyone.
Hello.
Sorry for your exile. I'm glad you had a minute to think about that joke.
And um
They gave me some time to get some curse words out, so I I do appreciate the the the the uptrend to cool off. I mean otherwise I'd be throwing boxes around, you know, and
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I I've been there. I know how it goes. Sometimes uh I'll I'll go on mute and put someone else full screen so that I can have a moment to just have a psychotic break, um, or just like a regular break and go get some water or something. Uh it's good to have like a moment to yourself and then kind of retool and then you're back in it to win it. What handhelds would you bring on a long a twenty hour flight?
So that it depend are you are you trying to that's an are you trying to survive the flight or is this for like in the room when you want some relaxing time like on the vacation because
Oh, you know what? You're right. You're right. Okay. Let's let's be real then. Uh'cause I was talking about for the whole trip, like what I'm gonna use throughout the trip. If I'm talking just plane flight. I know I'm probably just gonna pull out the Vita and the Thor at most. I probably won't pull the Steam Deck out on the plane too often. I might. It kind of depends, I guess, what game I want to play. Uh but you know what I do more than than anything else on a plane flight?
Sleep. I try to sleep, it's hard to sleep on the plane. You know, it but I try. Uh I actually like tend to listen to like audiobooks and then I'll just like listen to music or uh like load up a bunch of YouTube documentaries that I wanted to watch and kinda binge those. I'll kinda save them. And you could load it on the rotate. Now you could load it on the rotate, but I got the metal one and it's a little heavy for my sensitive hands. So my little fragile.
That's not gonna make it through the m that's not gonna make it through the machine when you're trying to get into the airport.
No, I use my Motorola as my MP3 player, my uh style G stylist, because I got a three point five jack on there, which the rotate does not have. Beat that Anne Bernick, where the hole at Where our hole at?
They made a choice. I swear the other T six eighteen handheld had an an audio jacket. It's it's not like it was missing from the RP three plus and I don't know. This d decisions were made.
¶ Andrew's Flight Handheld Strategy
They were made. What would you bring up?
Yeah. Biggest battery biggest battery I can. Because if I'm if I'm trying to survive that flight, there is no guarantee that the the power works on the plane. And so I'm probably bringing the Xbox Ally X. With the fifty uh with the eighty watt hour battery. And the upside is that if I bring a smaller pocketable handheld,
Mm.
And then it run out of battery, I can plug that into the Ally X to go juice it up.
Do you ever worry how you look absolutely ridiculous to the passengers next to you if you pull out the honkin ally with the big old handles?
I'm uh there's there's gonna be that old man who sits next to you with like whiskey and garlic on his tail for a bit.
What he got?
There.
What'd you play it's a tiny game boy? What'd you how'd you get that tiny game boy?
What's what's what's I know you always get that you're like oh what you got'cause I when I when I pulled a handheld usually it's It's some cool like modded one or it's just interesting looking or it's just one of our regular handtails that people haven't seen. And you always get the people in the airport or on the plane who ask you questions about it, which is cool, but it's like before I pull it out, I have to be think
Do I want to engage in a social time now? Do I want to engage with other people right now? Or do I want to have my personal time?
That's where the headphones come in. Just just isolate yourself. Sorry, I can't hear you.
I what is that? No, I totally get into the conversation though, and then next thing you know I'm talking to this person for half the trip and uh all my game time and audiobook time's out the window. So y it it's a choice.
Do you speak any foreign languages?'Cause that is your opportunity if somebody approaches you, just like just just start just start going in Cantonese and just pretend like you don't speak English.
I I'll just make um I'll make it my own language. Stub Stubbs is um.
No, big biggest battery and then the pocketable handheld. So the biggest battery one is going to sit inside of a case. And then besides I'm as much as I like And I really enjoy the Thor and I thought like, yeah, this is this is the end game handheld. For me it is still kind of the end game handheld'cause I use it every single day. But I'm transporting that thing around the house.
I'm not taking that thing with me on a trip. It's got just enough pocket energy for me to go up and down the stairs. But if I'm like waltzing through an airport with a thing in my pocket, nevermind my wife is gonna make fun of me, like, What the why the hell did you bring that thing? Like your pants look ridiculous. Don't do that. Um but Mew Mini or Mew Mini Flip, like those are my like quick everyday character. I wish the battery wish the battery life on it was longer.
I almost brought the U flip.
For whatever it's worth I I like the Mii flip a lot. I like the fact that it's self protecting. The buttons on the original Mickey Mini just feel better.
They do. I know. But I thought about the Miu Mini too, and I and I picked up the Miu Mini Plus and I said, you know, that's always a a contender. I picked up the three five XX original three five XX and that was a contender.
Uh
And I thought I even I picked up the Odin three. I'm like, well why didn't I bring this or the RP six? And uh the reason why is I almost brought the Odin three'cause I haven't spent a lot of time with that recently, but I just don't have it all set up and ready to go. My Thor is set up and ready to go. That's the other thing. It's kinda like Well, this is ready to play now with all my games. Okay. So there is that aspect I didn't mention.
Best handheld is the one that have you have with you and the one that's already set up with your stuff.
I'm I'm never finished setting up any handle, which I don't know if if you're you're like me, but I You've heard the Rust strategy it was like just put five games on it.
Bye.
But uh well you could, but also you could just do favorites. Right. And then the five games that you the only five games that you were gonna put on it could just be in the favorites section.
Hold on. Uh Matt Davis has apparently removed his Thor skin. He is Thor skinless on his Thor and this is upsetting, concerning, and Just shockingly uh shockingly uh upset it just it's just not good. Put it back on. Put the Thor skin back on. You can't reattach it. Now it's gonna be all funky. Yeah, get a new What are we gonna do with you, Matt Davis? Shaking my head.
Andrew needs a new Thor skin for the uh for his G P D win mini.
Andrew, do you have did you ever uh remove your thorskin?
I never put one on.
Oh n never?
No, I put one on the RGDS that I gave to or sent sold to um next year.
Okay, that's fair. I just sent Nick uh the super knob today. Why? That's yeah, that's fair.
Like it's something I uh it's some I
Well well I was just gonna say, uh picky aside, like w what would you bring on the on the plane flight? What do you bring on your next plane flight? Which will probably be I don't know. It'll be sometime soon.
Um Yeah, I mean Windows so I right now with what I currently have, it would be Odin 3, uh, Win Mini, and I would cheat and bring the flow.
Really?
Yeah, but I would use that as my laptop also.
Yeah, that counts. That counts. Oh and yeah, I was gonna say I'm also bringing my my surface laptop.
Um and for Linux handheld, that's a good question.
Yeah, if you had to pick a Linux, I know there's a few that are that actually do spark your interest.
Yeah. I don't even know what I have'cause I've been sell a bunch of stuff.
You're you're a trim UI and a Miyu guy last I checked.
Yeah, yeah, I am. I'd probably bring the brick.
With a brick. Yeah. It's probably
bring I would actually probably bring the brick just because of Uh security. Like airport security.
Oh I thought I made security like you can use it as a weapon.
I mean you can use either one as a weapon.
I I really thought about the brick. I did. I did. And I'm still thinking about it. I could break my rule and bring a fourth.
It it splits the difference between the Mi U mini and the Mi U mini flesh really well'cause it's a three point two inch screen. So like it's just a little bit lower profile and when you're dealing with pocket space, like that stuff matters. Yeah.
It's also high res though, which is nice.
It's beautiful, man. And it's just the easiest one to slip into your pocket. It's even easier. It's thinner than a clamshell, even most clamshells. And it's just such a good pocket handheld.
And the custom fur there's like spruce is so good they're like custom firmware is cooking across It the the the community just kills and I can't keep up.
¶ RG Rotate Mods & Fidget Factor
It's a little bit more.
Newly's carab is really good on it. Um yeah, spruce is of her it's it does all the parts.

Gamma got uh nano running on it. He hasn't released it yet, but like he's supposed to be his running on the on a brick, which is wild. So yeah, uh Brick's just a good hand I d I I'm I'm supposedly the Brick Pro is supposed to be announced or like unveiled this month, but we got two
I feel like it has been teased long enough. Usually they move faster than this, which makes us makes me suspect that like something happened to cause a delay. That is my suspicion.
Hey here's something you guys could load on to your To rotate. Look at this. Somebody made a game in Godot for the rotate to make use of the flippy.
Have you seen have you seen any of the controller mods for the rotate lately?
No. No, I mean I saw your mod where you swap swapped buttons out and stuff.
Oh yeah no like people are 3D printing controller mods. I'll have to send you the links for'em.
Well the rot okay, so the rotates one where like all of Ambernik's handhelds almost, over time it starts to become awesome. And it looks like that's what's gonna happen here too. Uh We'll have to see. I need that battery life though. That's the main thing that I need to get worked on because I just don't feel comfortable bringing it around because it's like I'm probably not gonna be able to enjoy it for long.
For music maybe, but for gaming it's gonna drain fast.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But for music, you're right. And music, keep the screen off. You know, we don't need to look at a watch. We don't need to look at the time the whole time. You know, that that watch feature seems like the silliest thing of the whole experience. But this this looks cool.
Just reminds those panic play days, just like the very unique games that are suited for just that handheld.
Pan of Plate 8's all right, yeah. Super unique. Some of the it some of the uh originality in there, the creativity the devs come up with.
¶ Computex: The Weird and Wonderful
So I feel like I wanna th I do want to throw a question back to you. So CompuTech.
Stubs.
What do you I mean, we discussed a lot of stuff that may be there. What are you personally looking forward to at Computex? Like what if there is a booth you see a booth and ex a bunch of exhibitors, like what do you feel like you want to rush to first to go and see?
Well, the first place I want to rush to is this mod that Andrew was talking about real quick. Um and then I'll think
This is a
🔊 Chant
Ta Cytake, Sataki seven thousand seven FX controller. It's kind of a perfect fit actually. I know the buttons are pretty cheap on on that controller though. Um but I like the what it looks like. Like I like what they're doing here.
There's one more, I'm still trying to find it. I will send the link as soon as I can.
As long as it doesn't interfere with the ability to flip up the screen,'cause as soon as you add analog sticks, it feels like there's the potential for interference.
I also saw a mod, I think it was today, or like it's an app where somebody's using like a c like this other controller mod that I'm trying to find. Yeah. In this app and it like it shows your speedometer. while you're playing Forza, but you're using like the controller pair I think it's paired to the PC But it links with the rotate with an app on the rotate. So it shows your speedometer in your in the middle of your hand while you're playing.
You're you're giving me like tr trauma flashbacks from like second screen experiences on the Xbox One, you know, from about a decade ago.
I don't care. I just thought it was cool.
You know what I'm gonna bring with me in case I run into somebody, even another YouTuber, anybody who wants to do multiplayer, I'm gonna bring my little my little uh CRK. Controller.
Thank you.
Yeah, yeah. It's color it's color matched to my Thor and so I'm just
Yeah.
Thank you.
It's so good. Um, but you wanna you were asking me about about uh what I'm looking forward to. I'm looking forward to hanging out with my friends. I'm looking forward to seeing Rob again. I wish I could see Andrew. Um even Zoo, I'd hang out with again. But
Good luck. I hope you like the taste of mallert.
I'm looking forward to seeing the the the people. Uh I haven't seen E. T. Prime in a minute and ask ask if he wants to come back on the show soon. And um You know, Russ and everyone. But as far as like the technology goes.
¶ Budget Innovation Call
I'm here for the weird, you know. I'm ready to look at some of the weirdest of the weird prototypes. That's the most fun part of Computex. Yeah, we're gonna get the next gen everything. Uh it'll be cool to see Asus is who's sponsoring and so like that's why I haven't just I'm just not talking about any ASUS stuff. We had to do that whole NDA thing. But um we're about to be in a in a few days, don't worry. Um
So I'll be a significant portion of the trip will be looking at everything Asus is doing and going to their headquarters and and chatting with them. Um but when I get on the show floor and I'm set loose to look at everything else, yeah, I'm just gonna go for the weird stuff, look at the weird handhelds. uh breaking edge stuff. Uh see what uh madness is going on. What's been developed in the uh in the in the pickle. In the pickle uh sector?
Thanks, Picard.
Don't crash the pickle.
The the the prototype text sounds'cause it's it's fun because again, some of this stuff which is at like we got folding screens out of like a copy text what like five, six years ago and then all of a sudden it just exploded across phones, so like it's You never know what is actually gonna get picked up and become the next thing, but you know that the the nugget of there, the presentation of it from some small company could potentially be the next like wave of stuff in your gadgets.
Yeah, we might see something huge. However, keep your Keep your hopes and dreams in check because with pricing right now, anything we see there is likely going to be crazy expensive. We can be crazy hyped, like, oh, this looks so cool. You know, this can't believe this. But it's like, okay, what are what are people gonna be? charge because I would much rather move towards the thought of that's cool, that's neat, that's fancy or the people who need that and have the money for it.
But what can we do, you know, in the budget? Like what's the new budget stuff? Is there any budget innovations that we have more efficiency in the lower end? That Snapdragon C technology, what can we eke out of gaming on that? That is really interesting. One of the most interesting things uh that was brought up tonight. Uh so I want I want to see like can they add that ship into a into a handheld? That would be so cool.
It's it's a play I mean it's a platform play, but yeah, i there's a very much opportunity for someone like that to be incorporated inside of low cost handhelds because low cost handhelds in some cases are just cheap laptops. All these handhelds
Are are you know, all these brands are vying for who can charge the most money and get the most specs in their machine? Why can't we explore which company can put the most specs into the cheapest? You know, like what corners can we cut to save money that aren't really that important to the majority, like, you know, trackpads or whatever it is. Uh, I wanna see what comes out of that because I there has to be a company out there that's thinking about this right now. Like
How are companies not thinking about this? How is it only how is it only like the the retro handheld scene that's really thinking about that?
Idle Chief says in the chat he he misses a good budget handheld. Like yeah, buddy, like three thirty three twenty six has got you covered. They're still making that. It's still out there.
But it's just not yeah, it's just that's more fun. That's that's where that's where the fun is to be had. It sucks saying that because yeah, I'm so spoiled by everything that now it's like, oh, but it doesn't have a OLED. Oh, but it doesn't play uh Doom Eternal at 60 FPS. No man, yeah I had to you had to step back out of that thought process for a quick second and uh realize like you can stream from your PC, which can be the beefy thing in your house.
Or you could be the beepy thing in your house. Who knows? I don't know.
¶ Lenovo G02 Controversy & User Experience
I mean Ambernik released every possible form factor under the sun for the eight seven hundred series. I still felt like there was stuff that was uncovered. Like I even techweep said at some point, it is crazy that the Miu Mini is still the only device in that form factor. Why is there not an eight seven hundred in the M Factor?
Lenovo sorry. Sir Skippy's comment torque took me out. Um Lenovo tried Yeah. You guys see this? We haven't we've even had a chance to talk about this. This happened since Monday. They pulled the G02 handheld from sale all across AliExpress. Because they didn't know their own handheld that they released came with ROMs.
Oh c they didn't release it, it was licensed.
But they but they still said that's one of our products, but we don't know how we don't know why shops are loading.
Yeah, they said they said it was one of our products until like yeah, until it was too late and it was like, Oh yeah, no, it's not ours.
Thank you.
Not they're like.
No no no no that's crazy. Oh my god. What h How does this ha I don't know, man. I was seeing that earlier and I was just like beside myself. I I don't e I don't even have one coming now because I was about to uh to finally get one now that I was picking out some, you know, A AliExpress sponsor handhelds for next month. It's like cool, now I'm gonna get that that G Zero two and now it's they just took it off the market. You can't even search for it now.
I found one listening last night.
Oh, you did?
After I sold it. It was like a hundred and eleven dollars or something. Oh.
No. No.
like bring it up because I was like, don't, don't, not even gonna do it. We love it.
We looked at that uh on the podcast here anyways already. But um Well, I'm sorry.
They didn't even have the decency to offer to not put it on the system, but put it in that silly downloader app like this, so you can just go fetch it from the side.
Oh no, poor Lenovo. I can't believe that happened. Um, it's just another funny little thing that happens in this scene that we're all so accustomed to. What are we talking about?
I don't even know. Well I think what what you're you're deciding to hang out with your friends in terms of tech wise, it's the the the weird stuff, right? And then yeah, we got into the like boy, just uh just give me a good budget handheld and give me a
Good budget handheld, so spoiled. You know, let's think about oh here's my thought. I got my I found my thought train b uh So when I was picking out handhelds for the trip, you know, I was trying different things out in the simplicity, someone in chat said it right here, you know, why not just Pick up one of your old Game Boys, the most analog, simple technology. And yeah, that's how I felt when I picked up the Vita.
I booted it up, it boots right up. It plays the game. It's a wonderful screen. It's a wonderful experience. I felt genuine joy from picking up the Vita and just playing on it. And it's like How am I ignoring this handheld for so many years and I forget about it for months at a time at least anyways? And then you pick it up and it's like, oh, this is so good because we think about
The specs, the specs, the performance, the sp all that stuff. When it's like, what is the experience? What is the customer experience? What is the the the player's experience of the device overall? You know? That That needs to be at the top. N uh, Steve Jobs, that was always his thing, right? What we started the experience and we worked backwards to the technology. That needs to be studied because like we're in such a crazy time now.
Uh Valve was doing it right despite the cost with their experience. And uh Sony's does it right usually. W PS Portal that can take it or leave, but uh the Vita, yeah, absolutely, man. All these other handhelds And Microsoft's trying with full screen experience. All these other hands handhelds have a long way to go, I feel like, in really bringing you the best user experience because
It's so janky. And I know we accept Jank because we're in the tinkering space here. I know we accept Jank, and that's okay. We play with Jank and I'll still be excited about handhelds, but Start with the user experience. Always.
We talk about all the time with with front ends. I would love to take any one of these devices and consolize it. You know, even so I can go and gift it to people. But the thing is unless you built it, unless you're the one who consolized it, something eventually always breaks.
Yeah.
Something eventually always goes wrong and then you go hand that to somebody's like, Why isn't this working anymore? This used to play DS, but now it's giving me this error message. What the heck is going on?
It's yeah.
Yeah, if dealing with the error messages and and issues, it just takes the out of the experience and it's like, nah, that's going you know, that's going in a drawer, I'm returning it or whatever it is, repurposing it maybe. Uh I meant I'm seeing a lot of mentions of the RP2 Plus, RP2S. Yeah, it was such a fun time in this hobby when the RP2 Plus.
Yeah.
in the RP two. Uh that was such a fun time because The y lack of touch screen, horrible experience, but there was such a focus on just They were just tr they retroid you can tell they were trying really hard at that point to bring you something that was special. And there's not a lot of times.
where you really feel like, oh, this is special versus like, oh, this is a handheld that has the things that make it handheld. And then they tossed in a bunch of games and just tossed in stuff, hope for the best. There you go, you go go buy that. Custom firmware people will figure that out in the community. Someone will figure it out, they whatever, the tinkerers thing.
These handhelds could really clean up. They could make some money if they just really focused on that experience, and that was like the main thing.
¶ Homework: Reconnect with Old Handhelds
It is it is less functional to go a corpo, but there is something to just again, just friction to play if you know what you want to play.
to Utah.
You just get that device for it. Like same my Steam Deck. I have uh uh devices that go and run everything, but I just keep my Steam Deck around because I have a playthrough of the original Mass Effect. I could it's on Steam. It could cloud sync anywhere. I just go back to that device when I'm in the mood to play it.
Yeah. Yeah. Any any device that that is simple to use and operate uh is gonna be is gonna be the best, I think, beyond beyond performance. Again, why I I I shill lately for the G Cloud. It's like I just missed that one. I missed I missed that. I'm like, oh, this is so good. Wish the screen was 120 Hertz. Wish the screen was OLED. Oh well. We we maybe maybe uh maybe something else. Maybe we'll get something new there, but uh yeah.
Something to be said there. Alright, I'm talking in circles now. You guys know what I'm trying to say here. Uh enjoy the enjoy the stuff you have. Go search through your closet or your drawers.
¶ Battery Safety & Show Outro
Pick something out of there. Just one thing. Here's your homework, everybody, this week. Because we're not going to be having a show next week. We're not going to have Thursday. We're not going to have Monday. We're going to we're going to be doing the Computex thing. So our, you know, our time zone is is all messed up.
If we're in the mood, Rob and I might try to do something offline. I'm at least gonna film footage to do something with later. Um, anyways, the homework is pick out one device, one type of tech, handheld, whatever it is, pull it out of the attic and uh play on it for ten minutes and just and just Just see how you feel. Just sit with that. And then and then go play on like a ally or or or any other the modern handheld.
And uh there's a compare those experiences for a second and then come back and let us know.
If you're gonna pull an old handheld out of the attic, please, please, please take the double A's out of it because they're probably corroded and you need to go and clean that up. Oh my goodness, the amount of handhelds that there's like oh no, for game gear. It's got all the the batteries.
I know. My my uh my steam controller, my OG one is all corroded. Uh the batteries were in there way too long, so I got to clean that out. You know, there you can buy stuff on Amazon to c to clean up corroded um connectors. But yeah, be careful. Take the batteries out. Check that they're good. Check that it's safe to use still in 2026. That's number one, I suppose. Check that you don't have a spicy pillow as well. Check those batteries. I had a Timu power bank that I bought.
as part of like the Timu thing we were doing years back. And finally, it's been three years now, finally I got a spicy pillow power bank from Timu and it is Expand it. Like it is dangerous. It's in a giant bucket of rice right now. I gotta take it to the recyclers. I gotta take it to the uh the hazardous waste recyclers. I'll bring it for R I'll bring it on the plane, bring it bring it for Rob. That's a joke, NSA.
No it's not.
Don't do it.
You can bring power banks on um on flights to uh Taiwan, by the way. Not to Japan, but we're right now to Taiwan.
You can't?
You can. Right now they're not illegal. So maybe something like this old Shar Geek or something. Have some battery battery life. Then I could bring the rotate. Well,
Amen. That's pre computext. Well tell us tell us we're wrong, to point out every mistake that we made. But I am very excited to see what is going to be there.
Don't buy from Timu. That's my other that's my other um spiel.
They're stuck being good after the giveaway handhelds just for the cost of shipping.
You know what?
Yeah, we were
Yeah, I and I bought from Timo that one time because yeah, we We had that brief moment where they were selling crazy handhelds, hundred dollar handhelds for like ten or fifteen bucks
Of course that comes with a whole bunch of questionable things behind it. What's the motive? Blah blah. Um, but to like do some of those deals, sometimes you would get other things. So I got like that power bank for like a dollar. I'm like, all right, what's the worst that can happen? Well, three years later I gotta take it to a very serious hazardous waste site uh and schedule time for that. I thought so too. They said absolutely not, not a swollen battery.
Wow.
You can take batteries and lithium batteries, but you can't take swollen lithium batteries.
I thought you uh you used to be able to. I guess they changed their uh their process or whatever.
I'm guessing so, yeah. I I went there first. I'm like, Oh yeah, yeah, they'll take it. I went to Best Buy and like Oh you take
Yeah, I knew that I knew that's why I wouldn't.
Like get the hell, get that the hell out of the store. No. Home Depot said there was like a liability thing. So they're not doing the swollen spicy pillows. So sand, yeah, and and I would yes, I would recommend sand first. I just don't have it. I have rice, so I that's what I had on hand. Put it in a glass uh jar, sealed it airtight, put that into a metal bucket. It lives in there in the dry sink at the moment.
You're missing the opportunity to re utilize your your Twitch channel, just like just twenty four seven content of a camera pointed at the rice bucket. Like when is it gonna explode?
For it to explode and and uh I do I can't have any more disasters in this house th There was a flood through the ceiling. Uh there all the the attic problems, all the electrician issues and the fish walls. I can't add on uh electrical fire. and g smelly lithium gas issues. Uh dangerous, not good. So uh keep a limited amount of uh these devices in your house. But Find one and play with it for a bit. Be careful.
Uh. Yeah, take care of your handhelds. All right, everybody. Well, it's been good. We're gonna go ahead and let you get back to your Thursday evenings. And for those of you watching this later, I hope you're enjoying this and listening wherever you're doing it. Uh we should have this audio episode out as well. Producer Sony is busy working on those. And yeah, uh if we don't see you next week, which most likely we won't, then we will uh see you next on Monday, June eighth. So yeah.
It's gonna be a little bit of a break from the show. Um we'll we'll miss you all out there and we'll be checking in and maybe I'll post some updates to our YouTube wall and Stay in stay in touch. But I'll come back with a bunch of good stuff. Pictures and Thoughts and video and all that stuff.
There better be a new Amber Nick between now and then.
And by the yeah, we'll have two new Royabella handhelds and a new Ambernick and Yeah no. Yeah. Netflix, I want to hear if you have the best buy audio. What is the best buy audio? Do you have the audio of that Stubbs? What? I I don't know what that means. Explain to me in the comments later. All right everybody. Well, let's go ahead and get out of here. Thank you for joining us. Good. Swell, we talked about a whole bunch of stuff. What are your thoughts on Computex? What about the new reveals?
Comment, leave all your thoughts but all this nonsense we've been talking about tonight. Check out the merch store, buy yourself a hoodie, buy yourself a sweatshirt, get some uh coffee mugs, look at that tie-dye shirt, that's pretty fancy, huh? Need a new hat? Everyone needs a good hat. Wear a hat. And uh I want to thank you all once again so much for watching. Don't forget to like, comment, subscribe, and share. We really uh do enjoy having those uh
those comments on our on our videos and we're trying to get to a hundred K so subscribe and uh it helps us out. Thank you for pushing that button and thank you to our supporters, our patrons, our members. You guys are awesome and make everything possible for us. Perks with RH over here. Start for as little as$3 per month. Join us in our Discord to chat and play games. Check out uh Mr. Michael Benny over here who is at retro lunchtime on YouTube at retro lunchtime.
And uh yeah, we also have Game of the Month about to start for the next month, and I think voting. Voting is definitely open now, so go vote for some games in the Discord so we can see what we're gonna play next. But until the next one, this has been Stubbs on behalf of Andrew, Mr. Michael Bunny, and you all saying take care of those handhelds, check on your batteries, get a device out of the attic, and take care of each other.
Good luck. Good luck on the flight. Good luck packing.
Thank you, sir. That's my next thing. I only got the handhelds back. That was the most important.
