¶ TechDweeb Hosts the Dweebcast
Hello. Hello, hello. Hello and welcome Dweebs and Lady Dweebs to the uh Retro Retro Handhelds Podcast. Uh th this is a uh this is a podcast that we uh do from uh time time to time. Uh well they they do. Uh I s I sometimes uh am here, but today Stubb uh Stubbs need a break. Stubbs needs a break. He he c so uh Stubbs calls me up and he says, uh Dweeb, I need a day off. This podcast is just draining me of uh of my of my uh my sexual energy
And I just I I need a a week off to to recharge if you know what I mean. Uh w would you be willing to host the show this week? And I says to Stubbs, I says, Heck yeah, buddy, I can do that on one condition. If it goes well, then uh yeah, I get to maybe maybe just uh take the show from you and kind of just stand firmly. And so so he says, Oh yeah, that sounds good. Uh and uh that's how it went. Isn't that right, Stubb?
I'll answer for you. Yes. Welcome one and all to the start of uh of a new era of the Retro Headhelds Podcast. Or should I say The Dweebcast. That's the uh that's the the new name of the uh show by the way. The Dweebcast. I made uh I made a sign in everything. And uh I I meant to uh I mean I meant to make I meant to make a uh j just a minute, Stubbs. I meant to make a jingle, uh but I I forgot. So uh uh I guess uh I guess we can make one up on the spot. Um
So like uh you know, it's it's the dweebcast. Come and see your friends. Let's talk about retro dudes until the end. But what if we forget to end it? Oh, that would not be good. Because that we'll just keep on talking longer than we should. Uh uh That's probably good probably good enough right there. We could just call it uh that that's the song.
Um so uh yeah, this uh this show is uh well uh it'll be uh about pretty much the same as usual except for, you know, I'll be the host and uh the and also this episode today is actually kind of a special episode. We got uh we got a little something special planned for today. Uh isn't that right, Rob? Our answer for you. Yes. But before we get to that, uh, we have a special guest with us today. I would like to welcome Andrew to the show. Andrew, welcome.
Hello. Yeah. This is this is uh the chimney roll. Yeah, you you probably I think you've been on the show before, but this is our first high meeting, so you know. We gotta uh we gotta get to know each other a little bit here. Oh yeah, he's he's all hyped for this sh for the for this, yeah.
¶ Podcast Hosting Tips and Merch
Yeah, so uh uh uh Andrew, why don't you start off by telling us uh what is uh what what is it you do around uh around retro handhelds anyway? Nothing. All right. Yeah, that's it. Also known as whatever Stubbs tells me to do. And what Zoo tells me to do. And what Rob tells me to do, which is usually nothing but spend Yeah.
Alright, well uh you you know like uh uh this is uh this is this is my first time running a podcast. So do you have uh do you have any tips for me as a as a host, you know, uh for the for my uh for the Dweebcast? Be you. Be all natural. Okay. Well I I I I don't know if I've ever not uh done that, but uh yeah, I could I could lean it I could lean into that a little bit, I guess. Tech. No my little noises. Yeah, that's uh that that would be good for like uh your uh your new ASMR channel.
Thank you. you can move on to that once uh once you uh relinquish control of retro handhelds to me you could uh maybe take on some of those kind of side tangent hobbies, you know? Uh I showed you my keyboard. So Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that was that was really good. Uh good music that you made there. Uh You two, good song that you did. Rob, tell me. Uh
So so so uh uh in podcast it always feels to me like the host has like you know, like a they they're always just uh dumping out random questions, you know, uh whenever somebody hasn't spoken. So Rob, what is the secret to a uh A successful a successful marriage. Letting your partner do what they want. Everything they want, eh? Actually, yeah. We let Stubbs get away with quite a bit on this show. Hey no. Hey no Hey, my voice is back. I thought I was like the little mermaid. Okay. Uh
Tech Tweeb also man, like thanks for hosting the show. It is nice to just have a night off and just chill down and forth down here. Uh real nice. Love it. Tips for to running the show. Uh just
Just uh be watch out for Rob. He's a tricky one, that guy. He'll he'll get ya and he'll get you to giggle at the moment you least expect. And Andrew is really the one, the snake in the grass you gotta watch out for because he'll come up with these zingers that are kind of subtle and then when they hit you or hide. All over. You know, and I have to go get the djembe usually and I'm just like, Andrew, why?
Yeah. Yeah. Well, you know, uh uh we we haven't talked about the uh the permanent cast uh and the the new rules of the show, the new uh the new world order or whatever, but like Uh, you know. Uh we we we'll we'll figure it out. We'll have it. Yeah. It's a a new uh about br a bright new day for us here on the uh on the Dweebcast. You're gonna need a sticker. I feel bad for Bann.
I I have to look for work. I uh I don't have them on hand. That's one that's one thing I gotta get better at is I gotta have my merch on hand be like Uh uh this this uh show is is brought to you by uh the Tetweeb uh mouse pad or whatever. And then I would actually have the mouse pad. I do have mouse pads on my store by the way. No
Tech Tweeb store. All affiliate links tonight will be Tech Tweebs. Uh also when someone uh then when there's money showing uh in the comments, you say, uh thanks for the super chat, uh green protagonist. Oh okay. All right. Yeah, that's that's uh I could I could handle that. All right. Uh uh gre green protagonist uh donated uh t some money to the he threw money at strangers on the internet. Uh thank you for that, Green Protagonist.
And uh uh please uh everybody else follow his lead, uh and uh do the same, I guess. Yes. Um okay, so uh uh this is oh yeah, there you go. Look at that. There we go. Okay, okay, so this uh the desk mat especially. I haven't uh I haven't actually like shown it specifically on my channel, but the desk mat is actually freaking sweet. It is a really nice desk mat.
I wanna get a second second one to actually use as a desk mat because it's so nice. I don't wanna ruin the the my only one'cause I use it for filming too. But it's like the scene you know, like on your retro handhelds if you have uh you know, if you have Yeah. if you've got the the Tectobeeb theme going on your on your retro handhelds. Okay. Oh. Yeah, man, the desk mat. Hmm. It's a good one. I'm gonna need that.
So are we part of your show now? Basically, like we're integrating the brands, we're kind of mix mashing. I'm I'm cool with orange. Hey, I love orange. I I'm gonna show you guys a book later that's orange.
¶ Canadian Taxes and Retro Handheld Addiction
Oh that's good. Cool. Yeah. Oh uh uh duh J uh I would like to thank uh Digital Jedi for the uh the it's called uh super chat, right? Super chat. Okay. Yeah, the Digital Jedi. Uh thank you for the super chat. Uh Dweebcast for the win. Uh Digital Jedi uh fully supports me uh uh uh taking over the podcast forever. So uh yeah. E every super chat uh makes me drink a sip of this uh root beer that is actual beer. Yeah. You got you got but you got vote with your dollar. It's Friday. Yeah. Um, can I...
Isn't that illegal or something? During Prohibition era, yeah, but we're actually in a different century right now. Oh okay. Yeah. We're good. I think our uh We have different laws here in Canada, so you know. You guys have double tax, which is upsetting for me. Uh do we? At least in B C but I'm not sure what uh What do you call it? The prob the the probant?
Yeah, we we used to I don't know I don't know how it is in every province, but we used to have uh PST and GST. The the the government s the government sales tax and yeah and the provincial sales tax. But now we just have one thing called HST it's ha it's called a a harmonized sale tax where they put the GST and the P. in one but we're gonna be bringing a new one which is called DST which is uh the the Dweed sales tag Yeah. Oh dweep sales tax. Right. Right. Right. Yeah.
And and for for anything, uh any kind of retro handhelds or uh uh retro game adjacent tech, uh you're gonna have to pay that. But uh all the all the money that we collect for that is gonna go directly back into the economy because I'm gonna use it to buy retro handheld. To play with. D do you need any more though? Don't you think you might have enough now? Enough. Listen to this guy. Uh Hey, I get it. I get it. Yeah, you gotta have a bunch of these little things. Yeah.
¶ Bulk Barn Confidence Experiment
What are we doing uh tonight? What's the what's the haps? I d I don't know what's going on. Oh yeah, we have a thing I pulled in here and I realized we were live. Yeah, yeah. I'm ki I I'm kinda out of sorts myself. Uh it's uh yeah. I I I should I should have been more prepared. I was uh I I th I was supposed to be here earlier but uh I was at the uh Uh bulk food store, uh earlier, you know, where everything they got everything in the big
Yeah, you have every Sam's Club and, you know, all those different what do you have up there in Canada? You have um We call the bulk barn. The bulk barn? Yeah. I know. It's uh such a dumb name. It's like furniture barn, but for Canada. Yeah, we're we're just uh we're just But it's a real thing.
Oh yeah. No, no, that's our thing. Uh so uh uh I was at the bulk bar barn and then I realized uh I was filling up a bag and uh you know,'cause the bin they got the bins and you scoop it yourself and I was filling up the bag. And uh uh I realized that I had no idea uh how much I was supposed to be taking because when you're filling it yourself, you're not really like.
You're like, is this a lot? Is this not a lot? I dunno. So I just I frickin' filled the bag and it was so heavy I could barely lift it. And yeah, uh it was full of trail mix by the way. The the kind with the cash Oh I like those cashews though. Yeah. But everyone else around me w looked so confident. They were they were uh they were doing their thing. They they seemed to know exactly what they were doing. So I just acted like I did and then I went over to their uh
Wha what do you call it? The the scale, you know? And I lifted my bag. I had to use two hands'cause I I filled it so much and my ar arms are so weak, but I Oh jalapeno. Yeah, oh yeah. I saw I saw all that stuff today. Yeah, you should be pretty jealous of uh of the uh the bag of stuff I had. Anyway. Yeah.
Yeah, so I waited on the scale just to make it kinda look like I I knew what I was doing, but then when uh when nobody was looking, uh,'cause I realized how much I actually had. I had like fifty dollars worth of trail mix in that bag. And I didn't even I didn't even have that much money. So when nobody was looking I just hid the bag of trail mix on some random shelf and I walked out without uh making any eye contact with anyone.
Oh, that's the best. No human interaction. It's like you can do that on the internet. In person, that's all these other senses and things that have to happen. Ugh. Yeah, I find it's all about uh it's all about confidence in how you carry yourself, you know, and that's sort of just uh a lesson for life, really.
¶ Show and Tell: Modern Games Kickoff
Agreed. I like that. I like that you're the host of this show now. This makes way more sense. Yeah. Yeah. I can just kinda pop in with little with little uh and little sounds and stuff. Okay. It's not necessary, but okay. No, Ban is the one who makes sounds. Tech Tech Tweeb, um, did you did you see the episode where Ban was humming? No, that was Andrew. It wasn't me. Wasn't it ban though? Anyways, ban ban human.
It started off as Ben and it ended as Andrew. It's like they almost one of them finished for each other. It was kind of amazing. We're getting on we're getting the host on drag. I'm t I'm I'm taking I'm taking Andrew's side in this. But uh anyways, uh so today we're doing a show and tell. Uh, and uh we figured uh we figured we would have a bunch of categories of various uh various things that we're gonna show and tell you about.
And uh I I hope we I hope we show. I uh uh I I've got stuff to show. Does everyone have stuff to show? Rob, do you have stuff to actually show? I do. Right. Lots of stuff. Andrew. Andrew, do you have stuff to show? Some, but yes. All right. And Stubbs, do you have showables? Oh, you got showables. I know you could. You can't eat. Yeah. Okay. The little I'm booping the people in chat. Oh that's cool. I wish I could do that. Why does Stubbs get to boop it and I don't Oh there we go. I get the top.
Well it's it's it's my show, so Rob, I can make that happen, but uh I'll have to figure out how it works before I do that. Anyways. So uh I I thought it would be fun uh to to select which uh show and tell we show first by uh by doing a little game. I've got uh I got my list of all the show and tells uh labeled one through uh one through twelve, even though there's thirteen. Uh well, I have a D twelve and uh We're gonna roll this to see which one comes up first.
After uh after we do that, we're gonna roll to see who uh who who presents first for each of these ones. It's kinda like a kinda like a game show kind of thing, but uh like a kindergartner game show where we just show and tell stuff. That's awesome. Okay. I like that. Great. All right. So let's uh let's begin. Uh okay uh drum roll, please. No, don't don't get your drum. W but we have the sound effect at least. Hey. Uh lucky number five.
¶ Stubbs' Mega Man Eleven & Rob's Mystery Box
Uh oh okay. Uh this one we're gonna talk about what is a modern game that you're playing right now. That's the uh that's the show and tell. What order are we going in? Yeah, we gotta figure that out too. Uh number two Stub. Oh, uh you know, let's keep it simple tonight. I like Mega Man Eleven. That's always the first game I play on most X86 handhelds. Mega Man Eleven, awesome modern take on Mega Man.
It's really tough. I still haven't beaten it, but I just keep coming back to it. It's just a great formula. And that that's one that uh you're you're actually playing now or is that one you just like That's one I play when I when I first uh try out a new X eighty six handheld. So yeah, I was playing it today because I got uh Rob's claw one thirty five H in which is very exciting for me. Very, very good. There it is.
I I benchmark and test to see like okay, how's it handle Megaman eleven? This game surprisingly, surprisingly, uh can be tough to run sometimes. So it's a nice starting point. Yeah Those uh those those indie games can uh can sneak up on you with their performance and It can. Rob also sent me a strange unmarked five hundred gigabyte hard drive. Which was banned. That is banned. I'm which I'm actually offloading that to you because I don't know what's on the hard drive. I on the hard drive.
He won't. Don't worry. You mentioned something about files, I said I'm not keeping this I'm sending it off to you. I got a triple my firewall. Uh they also gave me a three D printed dinosaur that was like real tall. I'll get it later. It's the Google T Rex. Yeah. I like it. But tell tell'em what you really got today, the the real joy that the that enter your life today. I don't even know how I mean Andrew and I managed to do this at the same time too. It was amazing. Pure luck.
Uh you gave me two copies of the Ambernik Heartbeat Fitbit controller, which was Unfortunate and thank you, I think. And then Andrew also sent me his G zero one heartbeat fitbit controller. So I have two white ones. Three yellows, one and two golds. People keep s and Ban I think sent me them. People keep sending me this controller that I won't use. So I'm just gonna give it away to other people. No. He does. It's upsetting. Da war er im Feuer.
Yeah. It's a spoiler for for one on the show and tells. That's right. Yeah. Um okay, so so is uh is Mega Man the kind of game where uh you get farther and farther each time you play it, or is it the kind of is it like the old school Mega Man where you just start at the beginning every time? You can save and and pick up releft off. I start fresh every time. Yeah. No problem. I I I assume you guys are like me where uh uh you have like
You're the games you play only when you're making videos. And every time you make a video featuring that game, you'll get like uh, you know, ten minutes further or whatever, and you're slowly making your way through it as as it shows up in videos. Yeah, I w I should start switching to that method. I like that method, actual progress. Yeah. But th then your benchmarks are all all wrong because it's different parts of the game. Yeah.
If you want if you want the answer of what game I'm actually, you know, trying to work through story wise, that's dispatch. Dispatch is awesome. And there's so many story arcs and turn twists and turns, so All right. Do you uh do you sit back on the couch with that one or are you playing on a handheld? Oh that's my couch sitting one, yeah. I mean I'll play it on any of my X eighty six. Steam Deck usually yeah, Steam Deck feels right. It doesn't it's not a super graphical intensive game.
All right. Yeah. Yeah. I'm just not uh not really a superhero guy, so I find it hard to to want to play it. I know it's not just a superhero game, obviously. Superhero. Yeah, that's why I don't I I I like to keep my uh real life separate from my gaming, you know? It's like if I wanna see superheroes I'll just go hang out with my friends. That we d we save save people's lives and stuff all day every day. So We saved a Canadian's life once. Um
¶ Rob's Pokemon Pocopia Exploration
Twice. Uh Rob w who's next again? Okay, next. Yeah. Hang on. Yeah, we got number three. Who's that? That is Rob. You read my mind. All right, Rob, uh what uh modern game are you playing these days? So I'm playing Pokemon Pocopia, which I've been talking about for the past few weeks since it came out and yeah, this has just been a lot of fun. I um actually went out and bought a whole switch two for my daughter as well so she can play it and
It's all I've been playing really. I beat Resident Evil Nine not too long ago and this is all this is it, you know. All right, so so uh uh I don't know a lot about it. I've seen the trailers and I've seen people talk about it, but I don't really know the vibe. Can you like explain like I'm five, what is po pocopia? Okay, so have you have you ever played Dragon Quest Builders?'Cause that that's kinda like the starting off point for this whole game. No idea.
Okay. But but that one is another one I'm aware of tangent. So it it basically is based on that whole concept of how that works. But it it's just it's very much the opposite of the Pokemon formula. I mean, you are building this whole world essentially for your Pokemon to move in and live in and basically all the humans are gone and you're trying to restore the way things were when humans were around. So it's just
There's so much to do. You know, people say it's like Animal Crossing. It's definitely got that cozy game kind of vibe, but I I would say uh, you know, it's not as much like on Animal Crossing for me. It's kind of its own thing and that's why I think like Dragon Quest Builder is one that comes up a lot. If you've played it before, you know, that's kind of what it's mostly like.
But I mean, the things that you can do in this game, I mean, there's there's endless possibilities. I've seen people do all sorts of crazy things in here. So I've only just scratched the surface of what you can do. It's got uh it's got definite Minecraft vibes, uh but I'm sure uh it makes more A lot a lot of a lot of building that you can do. I mean you can like do terraforming. Uh I mean just you can let your creativity flow with this basically.
I love the art style. Oh man. Though th that kid that main character girl in the trailer here, she is frickin' adorable with her little So it's They look like they're made of play-doh. Yeah. So it's basically Ditto and Ditto's task to to help restore this world to uh Pokemon basically. Ditto is the is that the one that uh uh mimics other Pokemans? That's why they got the adorable face. Ah. I think I have a little a little ditto uh. Yeah. Thank you for that.
Uh okay. Uh uh very good. Uh po po Pokemon Pocopia on the Switch 2.
¶ Andrew's Slay the Spire 2 & Early Access Debate
Oh, number four. Uh Andrew, you're never you're up next. Nice. First. When I'm not playing Call of Duty, I am playing Slate of Spire too. All right. I I p put a lot of hours into Call of Duty, but uh it's the uh when the first play this fire came out it wasn't like really my cup of tea. Roguelakes aren't didn't used to be.
Uh but this one got me into it big time and I've been super excited for Slay this Pire two. I forgot it was coming out and then I saw it on Twitter and I bought it immediately. Ooh. Yeah. I I I I'm very tempted but uh I I try to steer steer steer clear of early access game. because I've been uh I burn myself too many times where I get in on the early access one and I play it and that's the only time I play it is like when the the hype is just starting in the early access.
And then later when the game's like done, I I did I don't play it because I've already played it and I'm like done with it, you know? I I understand that. Um this is one of those ones where you could still I feel like you could still 'Cause you have like six kit six different characters to choose from. And there's like different paths to take each time and uh there's enough variety, I think.
Um yeah. Well, I mean I mean there are people who are uh uh before this came out, people still playing the Hector to Slay the Spire One even though it had been around for how many years, right? Too many. Yeah, it's one of those like forever games that y the it'll just always be people playing it, I think. Yeah. Yeah, I agree with that. And and I didn't even pay attention to that. I didn't realize it was early access. I just saw that it was available and I was like, okay, yeah. Yeah.
¶ TechDweeb's Creature Kitchen Demo
All right. Well uh I actually brought uh I brought a demonstration of the game I'm playing. Let me get it started up here. Creature kitchen? Yeah, creature kitchen. Yeah. Is that game native you're playing with? Yeah, yeah. Oh nice. Oh yeah. This is my main uh my main little steam device, so hang on. Really? Session suspended. Please restart.
Game native is a little weird still. Uh it's hard to uh it's hard to say, Oh yeah, just install game native, you'll have a great time because it gets uh weirdness. It's per game, you know. Some games are good, some games uh need a little tinkering, a little bit of doodaddy and Yeah. You know, and dad does, so All right. No, it doesn't. Oh, my goodness. All right, maybe I can't. Oh, wait, wait. No, I got a backup. Hang on. Beer. I do. The beanie.
Do we when you when we saw you at CES, you were rocking one of your shirts, which was cool. Um are these who was so so we've been talking about your bodyguard on the right there and the blue's kind of looking at at us funny. Does that uh who is that your dad or who is that guy? We've been wondering. Oh no, I just met him on the plane. Uh he was uh he said he was going to C S but then when we got to the door he didn't have like any i identification or anything and people were like, Who are you?
And I was like, no, no, he's with me. And then when we got inside, I was like, wait, uh, do you actually are you actually supposed to be here? And he said he was, but it got kind of weird after that. And then I lost track of him. And then yeah, I don't really know what happened to him. It was uh yeah, very straight.
Yeah,'cause he later ran into us of the barcade and he beat one of us up. I won't say who, but uh it was a big problem. So I'm glad I'm glad that he he's not your dad,'cause I I didn't want to say anything and be rude. Yeah, I don't uh I don't take any responsibility for what he did, even though it's kind of my fault that he was there in the first place. Whoever's
Well, he didn't beat them like he didn't hurt anyone. He just took the floor pizza and started slapping the floor pizza across people's faces. And it was a bit it was a little it was awkward and you know, he got ran out into the street and we chased him off with the um with the joysticks. Yep. So all all's all's well that ends well. I've that same steam deck, sir.
It's oh it's so it's one of my favorite things in the world. Uh anyways, uh Creature Kitchen is a uh this is like oh man, it's a hard one to describe. It feels like uh one of those like psychological horror games, but it's not. It's it's no no jump scares, no creepiness, no uh you know, no blood or anything like that. It's just a little weird and unsettling. It almost feels like one of those uh
You know, like a haunted PS one game kind of thing. Like a a PS one game that you find on the old old demo disc and no one knows where it came from and it's weird. Clock tower or something. Yeah, so the idea with this one is uh uh you're in this little cabin and uh you're uh you're meeting it it's very peaceful game. I love it. I love hanging out in this little this little cabin world. And uh the idea is you're meeting uh you're meeting little creatures and you're trying to befriend them.
And so there'll be like uh yeah, like a happy little raccoon and a uh you know, hang on, let me let me ring these little bells here and there should be a bird that flies down. Where's the bird? There he is. Hello, Mr. Bird. Yeah, so uh there's little uh woodland critters. And uh your job is to cook their favorite food. And so there are uh recipes. Uh you can go here and you can find out uh what they eat. Uh you find out what they eat from uh the the animal book over here.
So, you know, uh uh if uh you find out like this guy here, the uh this little creature lurking under the uh the the deck, uh he wants two sandwiches. And you're like, oh okay, I need to make two sandwiches to befriend that guy, whoever he is.
And you figure out how to make sandwiches and it's a very analog game, you know? Like when you're uh when you're cooking the eggs, uh you're actually like flipping the pan around and trying not to drop them on the floor and uh you gotta like uh follow the recipes. You have a recipe book and it teaches you how to cook. ད ད ད ད ད ད ད ད ད ད ད No, you are regular foods. Sandwiches and Yeah, sure. Yeah. And and then uh uh as you uh befriend the animal.
Uh they bring you like keys and you can use those keys. Hang on. Let me. You can use those keys to like get into these uh locked doors. of uh of the uh of the cottage. Love the graphics. Yeah. I was gonna say the the graphics are great. It feels like a PS one game, but like an artsy one. And uh like here's a here's a weird thing. This is the pantry, right? So I could walk here and as I'm walking along, it kind of goes on forever.
And then at one point, uh, a bunch of the the stuff will just fly off the shelf and you're like, Ah, ah and you turn around and you realize like even though I've been walking forever The door is just right there. So it's kind of like, you know, kinda kind of creepy and weird, almost like a surreal dream kind of thing.
Uh and uh your goal is to uh befriend all the animals. It's almost like a creature collecting game, like like Pokemon or whatever, except uh in this cat uh cottage in uh in the woods. And I love this little cottage. I'll just hang out here. I was gonna say it has some similar aspects to uh Pacopia. Yeah. I like the I like the style. I I kinda need this immediately. Do we have this in the family library, guys? Is this do we have this one yet? Oh.
It's it's so it's so good. It's one of my favorite games right now. And uh my mo my mom, I get her to play games sometimes. I'll shove uh I'll shove a Steam Deck in her hands and I'll be like, Here, try this game and every now and then one click. And she played she played through the entire game. In like one afternoon, she gets obsessed and she just doesn't stop playing. So uh My mom does that with Doom when I was a kid. She did that with on the S N E S version of Doom too. Like the Nice.
Yeah, it was the red cartridge. And uh like she was like no money Cool. She was so cool. I mean she is so cool, but she doesn't play Doom as much anymore. She's more Pac Man these days. Get her some uh get her get her some like uh mo mod packs and uh uh you know. Doom wads and stuff. You could uh give her s a whole new Doom experience that she's never had I gotta show her some great wads. Show her a checks quest.
No she got me checked once'cause she brought the checks serial home and then I'm not sure. Ha ha. Ah, we had her E machines that uh that w she played games on. I w I was making uh I'm w my ne spoiler alert, my next video is uh playing the worst retro game on every retro system. And Chex Quest came up as a potential option for uh my DOS game. Yeah, uh I think we had some super chats too.
Oh, okay, of course. Uh yeah. Uh uh R Rad uh Ford. Uh oh, I love these names. I love I love r reading all these fun names popping up in my face. Uh gave us a super chat. Uh it says, Dweeb, uh be nicer to Uh he tried to uh he said something I don't know what it is. Uh anyway, move m no, no, we don't need to uh moving on. Uh we don't need to worry about that guy. Also uh green protagonist wants to know if Andrew's played Returnal. I replied, No, I have not, but I picked it up after talking to Kay.
Nice. Benchmarks. And there was one other one too, uh Vegan Pop Tart, that's right. Thanking Jedi for the super chat. Oh yeah. Yeah. I could go for I could I could go for a vegan Pop tart. And the one after that, he bought me two of them. So I have four of them now. And these books are freaking incredible. Uh this is the one I brought to show you today, which is the unofficial uh Game Boy Advance Pixel book. So the Game Boy Advance is my favorite retro system, as you know, and uh the Pixel Art is one of the reasons that I love the Game Boy Advance. And this is a book celebrating all the best uh GBA Pixel art that they're
Uh the other the other uh bitmap books I have, hang on. My uh my studio lights in the way. I have one called uh Run and gun, which is uh like uh yeah, run and gun games. I have one called uh Go Straight, which is uh about beat them up games. I have one that is uh the NES and Famicom Visual Compendium. So it's all the all the uh uh NES and uh
Uh Famicom uh stuff. And uh oh gosh, the other one is hidden behind. I'll grab it in a sec. Anyway, I'm showing this one. This is uh the GBA Pixel Book and uh They're bit they're like coffee table books. These are w some of my favorite kinds of books. Oh they have these big spreads and really nice big uh beautiful printed uh uh samples of everything. And they'll go they'll go they'll have like a uh let's so this one here is for uh uh What is that? This is just what?
Looks like Wario Land. Can producer uh BMO on your side control the camera and zoom in and uh can I see those big old chunky pixels? That's a good one to zoom in. Yes. Yeah. I love I love this. Oh Yeah, I have a couple of their books. They they're really high quality.
Yeah, so so uh it it it really reminds me of like the old Nintendo powers and stuff, you know, when they would just make these big spreads full of screenshots and words about the games that you're uh learning about. Look at this one. Oh yeah. Tons of little factoids and just uh yeah, they're j they're just beautiful books. Oh we need a band here for this one.
This one is my favorite because it's the Game Boy Advance uh Pixel Art. It's that's like my jam. That's my thing. The Game Boy Advance Pixel Art is is my happy place. Oh look at this uh look at this spread here. Oh that's nice. Nice. Like these artistic things. Yeah. Uh so yeah, that's my uh that's my oh yeah, Astro Boy Omega Factor. That's Aspra Boy's a fantastic on game boy. It's so good. So many so many good games. But uh the Pixel art especially.
What do we got here? That's uh what's this one? Uh that's w w uh Is that w uh one piece? Yeah, it looks like one piece. Not to upset you or stop you, but can you um give a hard time to this uh person who is late to the show? To your show. Okay. Well, uh, you know, uh uh I I'm not gonna say I'm uh disappointed, but what's more disappointing is that this is not the first time. That's all I'm gonna say about that topic.
It's I think their name means they forget things. El forget ting El forgettings. So it's okay. I forget tings. He forgot the H in things. It's it's not that hard to understand. Come on. It is dark. Ha ha. Yeah, so uh uh that's my uh that's my my uh my uh G uh uh unofficial G B A Pixel book from uh Bitmap Bitmap book. One of my favorite sweet man. This is my this is my the amazing uh every single book are are uh amazing by this company and this one's my favorite because it's uh GBA Pixelar.
Thank you, young man. Did your mom get you for that get that for you? No, no, that you no, I I already told you and you weren't paying attention, so uh I was reading the super chats and having my fourth sip on the little root beer. Yeah, that's fine. Oh well I forgot to open my root beer. Dang. All right, hang on. Let's uh let's do the uh The crap. Yeah. I love the bias of all c Al Kane.
Oh that's me Oh yeah, yeah. Wha that's what we do in Canada. Everything's gotta be in French too. For some dumb reason. Uh no it's me again. It's just me four times in a row. The the the dice wants me to go with the likes you. It likes you. I could get another book.
¶ Rob's "Subtle Art of Not Giving a F***"
Three. Rob. Rob, you're up. Yeah. What's your book, Rob? So my book is uh not gaming related, but you know, I think it's a a good book to read just as a life lesson. Mark Manson. You know, I read this book a couple of years back, I became hooked on it and I actually even went out and bought up a physical copy of it, you know, wow, physical books. But it it's just it's a great book that kind of helps, you know
Focus yourself in terms of things that actually are important to you, you know. And you know, the the book is called The Subtle Art of Not Giving a And Basically it's learning about what to give fucks about. You know? It's learning about what's important and the other things to not sweat it as much. And the the guy's kind of an asshole and
But he he has some good lessons in there. I think, you know, it's just one of those kind of books that everybody should read. It's a very quick read and, you know, if you're feeling down or or you need some, you know, different type of perspective in life, it's a good book. It's a good read.
Yeah. Is there like a you know, like a back of the back of the book quote you can give us? Not like a word for word thing, but like if you if if he was gonna feature a little mini review by Rob the Retro Tech that What uh what's the one thing you would say about it? Sure, you so I I mean I can I can read the uh let's see what we got here. You got to lock and load it.
My my my wife and I uh both read this book. We loved it and she like reads every one of his like updates, k his blog, everything. It's just uh it yeah, it helps us get through life. I'll I'll take a quote from from one of the flaps. And basically he says, In life, we have a limited amount of fucks to give. That's three. Three. You must choose your F wisely. Manson brings a much needed grab you by the shoulders moment of real talk filled with entertaining stories and profane.
Ruthless humor and this manifesto is a refreshing slap in the face for all of us so that we can start to lead more contented, grounded lives. And you know, I think everybody find probably finds themselves in a point in this life, you know, where You kinda need this advice and it's it's just a good book to have, always by your side. If you wanna reread it, you know, this is what you should do. This this book is invaluable, honestly. I gotta get a new physical copy of this one.
There's a... A double set. Everything is funny. I haven't actually read that one, you know. Yeah, I mean this this is one of those books that kinda sticks with you, you know. I if you if you read it, you you will most likely take some advice from it, you know, and and carry on with your life. Um All right. I I think it's a it's a good book for you know, just in general what the things are are going on in the world and just it just helps. It's it's a it's a decent book to have. All right.
And it's orange, so I know technically proves. And your mom might let you have it. Profanity though, I think. Yeah, yeah. Well they they did uh they did uh uh put the star in the word. They they kinda bleeped it on the cover, so that that m that might get it past her uh. Yeah, past past her iron gates. Uh okay. Uh yeah, that's uh that's freaking awesome. Uh uh that's your uh your homework, everybody. Your prescription from Dr. Rob. And we're on to Andrew. Do you have a book for us, Andrew?
I can't read. Okay. That's fair. That's fair. We'll uh I actually d I the last time I finished a book cover to cover was Angels and Demons after I graduated from high school. Like was like fifteen years ago. Nice. Uh That was what was that? That was from that guy who did the DaVinci Cook? Yeah. And then I got went and watched the movie like an idiot and was very disappointed. Yeah. Tom Hanks tried it.
I he did. I love Tom Hanks, but the movie on h on the on like when you read a book and then go watch the movie right afterwards, it's terrible. They should have gotten Kinhank instead. Yeah. They should have done something other than what they did. Thank you. Agreed. All right. Was the Da Vinci Code movie better? I enjoyed the Da Vinci Code movie better, but I didn't read the book either. Oh okay. I've been I haven't seen the book or read the movie either, so
All right. Uh I think we're on to the last one, so I'm not gonna roll this endlessly. We'll just jump right to you, Stubbs. Okay. What do you got for us? Have you ever read a book?
¶ Stubbs' Wheel of Time & Chuck Norris Tribute
I read a book one time. Uh it was called The Wheel of Time, Eye of the World, and it's by Robert Jordan. Uh you know, he sadly he passed away before he could finish his book series, and so Brandon Sanderson Finished it off the last couple of books there. It's an epic series. I commend anybody who can get through the entire, you know, what is it, fourteen books or something? They get pretty long.
Long in the tooth, honestly, right in the middle of that series. But the first few, especially the first one, I love it. I've read it uh a few times and it's just near and dear to my heart. They have a new series on Amazon. Uh where they adapted this to a T V show. The T V show is not Mm-hmm. not great if you've read the book. I it's an okay fantasy T V show, but
The book is an epic adventure. You know, you got orcs, you got uh you got the guy who's gotta save the world, get the magical sword, and you got magic users, and it's just awesome. I recommend it. Is this show just called Wheel of Time? Yep. Wheel of Time. That's right. It's worth watching. It's just if you've read the book series, be prepared to be whelmed. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah, that's most uh that's most shows though. I mean Oh no. Think I watched one or two at least.
Turns out Stubbs was the only one. I guess I was the only one watching. I I didn't even uh you know more important than any of this though, honestly rip Chuck Norris, like rip to a legend today. Oh my goodness, I saw that yesterday and he was in the hospital. I'm like, well he's He's gonna he's gonna beat this. He's gonna he's got this. And then today he decided to leave this uh earthly plane to go uh I guess kick the Grim Reaper's uh butt up in uh the clouds. I don't know.
Yeah, they're not going to be able to do it like death didn't catch up to Chuck Norris. Chuck Norris caught up to death. Yeah, finally he finally got he finally got him. Uh uh cheers to uh to Walker, Texas Ranger. Yeah. Cheer, cheer cheer cheers to the yeah. Pour one out. When Chuck Norris looks at a can of root beer, as soon as Chuck Norris finishes drinking the can melts. Ha ha ha. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that uh I I w I would wear uh I would wear a shirt with that on it. All right.
¶ Rob's Snacks: Beef Jerky & Iced Coffee
Uh before things get too sad, let's move on. Uh lighten the mood with uh question of oh yeah, this one is very light. One of your go-to snacks or drinks. Oh man. Thank you. Oh man, this is a good one. All right. Hold on. Hold on. We gotta wait. We we gotta follow the procedure. Number three, that'll be Rob. Rob, start us off. Your favorite go to snacks or drinks. So simple beef jerky. I like beef jerky a lot. It's good for you, you know. Nothing no frills. Say straight to you, you know.
That's it. That's that's that's that's my favorite snack. Yeah. Yeah. And drink. I d I have to have iced coffee. Every morning I gotta start my day with coffee. Iced coffee, if I don't have my coffee in the morning, it's nothing's happening that day basically. So I'm always going for an iced coffee in the morning. Go and you you go to you go to a place to get one? No. Nope. I just do my my home. Yeah. I was gonna say we've got a millionaire over here at Daniel Ice Congress.
No, no, no, no, no, no. That that's that's some good financial advice, too. You know, you wanna save some money, make your own coffee at home. Yep, we do that too, man. Brew your twenty cent cup of coffee at home. It's a lot cheaper. It's crazy how expensive coffee is out of the house. Gotta do it. Yeah, coffee is like pennies a cup if you make it at home. Seriously. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah, I mean I I paid like seven dollars for coffee, you know, not too long ago and I was like seven dollars? What Why? Uh I may have paid seven dollars and eighty five cents for coffee just this morning.
Yeah. Well I dis it was an extra tough morning to wake up and uh Субтитры сделал DimaTorzok machine looked so ominous like there's so many steps and I was like you know what not today it's Friday gotta live my best life and I had the delivery service so yeah I mean the coffee in the Oh, stuff's real real bougie over here. Delivery fee and Even guess his ice coffee delivered to him. You know it sh it was a hot latte, okay?
You're on the west coast too, so like you guys you guys don't just drink coffee, you drink like Oat milk. Yeah, half calf, uh oat milk, vanilla syrup, a little bit extra hot, give me a little bit of that, uh maybe medium size on maybe large on a on a tough day and yeah. Uh. I live in Portland, Oregon, so That says it all, right? That's all you need to know. Probably gets the R H logo like, you know, drawn in there with creamer or something.
Oh that's right. Yeah, they'll they'll make pictures in there. Tell them that. I have been doing something like that. Ha ha. Her name her name is Shania. Okay. And uh she's very dear to my heart. Is that what she's up to nowadays? Well,'cause she's I call her that because when I drive up and I and I and I show her like my sweet uh Subaru Forester two thousand six, she's like that don't impress me much. Usually. I love the super chat we just got. Oh. Mm-hmm.
Uh so so uh uh Rad Fordah uh uh has a uh map message for uh Stubbs. Rich man Stubbs over here using my super chats for coffee. Well that's that's that's a thing of the past. The the we have a new uh we have a new regime. There's a there's a new boss in town. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, he's gonna have to do that. Uh that's uh that's gonna be going to Uh yeah, he's gonna have to he's gonna have to find a new source of income for his uh fancy coffees.
Uh, anyways, uh moving along, uh, we got next. Uh that's back to Rob again. This dice, it just wants the same person uh over. Magnetized. Dweeb That's me. Alright.
¶ TechDweeb's Instant Mashed Potatoes
Ooh, show us your snack. All right. I am uh so uh not many people know this about me, but I'm quite fond of uh a drink called No, I'm kidding. Yeah. That's too easy. Yeah. So uh uh I I am uh I am an old man. I've been an old man since I was a a young man.
And uh I've always liked very plain food. I like things that fill me up and uh I like things that are quick and easy. And one food that I've eaten Uh since I was since uh the I was first able to uh to to make make my own food, to cook my own food, is uh instant mashed potatoes. This is one of uh the uh w I buy this uh we we have the subscribe and save on Amazon. And uh uh I buy this yeah uh every single month. Abused the heck out of that.
Pure pure A. Pure A. Well uh every But I was fancy over here, man. This isn't fancy at all. This is the unflavored one too. Home style meat is a little bit Dude, there's a little dude over the the first E. That's an accent. It makes the E sound like the an A. I like I like a lot. Don't church it up there, Dweeb. Anyways, yeah, so uh uh I've literally been making this since the like I knew how to to do it. Like it you just add hot water to potatoes to potato powder and it turns into potatoes.
And uh I will eat this. I'll probably go through uh twelve of these a month. So like uh almost half of one a day, maybe a little less than half of one a day. Every single day I will eat this. Uh and uh with uh just a little bit of salt, a little bit of pepper, a little bit of uh margarine on there and uh call it done. It's uh
It's a it's it's it's the food that I snack on before bed. And it's kind of just uh part of my life so much that like it's it's up there with like um I don't know, brushing my teeth or uh or showering once a week or whatever, you know. What is that? Mashed potato ASMR. You ever do that or you just put your hand in the bag and kinda like just for the feel of it? What? That's what I do with my potatoes. It's not the same potatoes that I have. Your channel stuff? Yeah. Uh huh, sure it is.
Another thing that uh I'll use this for is if I make myself, you know, like a quick shepherd's pie or something like that. I'll just use this. Oh shepherd pie, yeah. One of the things that's nice about this is it's literally like the only ingredient is just dehydrated potatoes. Like that's it. That's it's just it it's it's like it's just potatoes. That's all it is. And when you make uh i in in my opinion
It it you can't tell the difference. It's just it's just potatoes. You make those and you're like, I have mashed potatoes now. It doesn't taste like some weird cupboard food, uh like not like making your own mac and cheese versus eating craft dinner. No, this is just potatoes. It turns out just like potatoes. Only potatoes is your new website. Yeah. Yeah. So uh oh yeah, potatoes are one of my favorite foods and that's one of my favorite ways to eat'em and I do it almost every day.
Get starched, but all right, let's go. Yeah. All right. This is a terrible method because it keeps coming up with the same names we've done. Andrew, what kind of snacks are you into? Or drinks? Snacks or drinks.
¶ Andrew's Caffeine Fix: Red Bull
Stoke coffee. We know that, yeah. Well, yeah, start the day of the stock, but... but it keeps me awake. Doesn't give me ewings. Not anymore'cause I've had too many. Those beautiful. I... Uh no. No, it just keeps I saw what he did in New York. He flew from one bed to the other. No, no no no. That was you trying to cross the street when cars were coming. I think about that every night and day. Now is it uh uh i is it just like one a day or you're sucking them back all day?
Usually it's all about One or two, it's coffee and then that's what's the rubber ball. Yeah. How on an average day, how many will you have? Okay. Amen. And if if you don't have them are you like dead to the world, like you become kind of a zombie if you if you don't get your uh your uh your red bull? Uh no,'cause I'll find other ways to get caffeine. It's caffeine specifically. That I need to inject into my veins.
All right. Red Bull's expensive, isn't it? Like doesn't that uh doesn't that add up over time? Yeah, i it it does. It's not it's not cheap. Yeah. All right. But it's still cheaper than Stubbs's delivered iced coffee. It's Friday, my dudes. Three of those Red Bulls for one of Stump Spock. Uh Honestly. And I only did it three days in a row this week. That's uh that's a lot. My family is in another is uh in another state. I'm a bachelor. I don't think that's how that works. I don't know.
Like ramen and you know. Yeah, right. Trying to say. Dogs, you know. I haven't I haven't done a little grub hub dash in probably a year, so this week I felt a lot better. Do growth. No, no. When I was a true bachelor, yeah, we did top ramen, we did cup of noodles, we did you know, the classics. Hell yeah.
All right. Uh we had a super chat and it was from Rad. He said I can just say Rad and he said potatoes forever. So, you know, I will uh I I I would I would eat some mashed potatoes to that if uh if I wasn't on this podcast right now. Potatoes. And Smitty, I know I can eat a carrot for twenty five cents. It's just that it's sometimes it feels good to lovingly have someone uh bring it to you on a platter. Carrots are a good snack too. That's another one of my go to.
I love for c well for a while the w I was eating too many carrots and my my hands were kind of turning a little bit orange. It wasn't matching your shirt. Yeah. Yeah. I thought there was something wrong with me and they was like, No, you're just eating so many carrots. How many carrots do you eat? And I w I was like half a bag a day and they're like, That's too much carrots. Well your eyesight's gotta be tip top with a vitamin A in there. No man, have you seen how thick my glasses are?
Ah, sure. Real thick. Yeah. Anyways, uh Stubbs, uh I think you're the last one on the dice, so uh take us take us home.
¶ Stubbs' Hummus & Juanitas Chips
Right. So speaking of carrots, give me some hummus. All right. Nice. Good job. Yeah, Harvest, uh King Harvest right there, King of the Castle right there in Portland, Oregon. And uh to to pair that with, I like to have uh these. You probably know what these are. They're nationwide now, at least in the US of A. And uh these were called Juanitas, but in some territories they've renamed it to Juantonio. What? is that
They're delicious, they're restaurant style chips. They're kind of like a little greasy. They're not amazing for your health, but every once in a while if I wanna if I want a good chip. One gram of saturated fat actually isn't too bad. I'm gonna tell my doctor he's wrong. And uh gluten free if you're that if that's your thing. Okay. They though they those look really thick. Are they just like uh regular tortilla chips or are they extra like thick tortilla chips?
Oh just regular. That's a regular chip. Regular chip. Yeah. Little little bit a little bit thick. You gotta eat'em within the first few days because they, you know, they will get stale if you want like the best experience. Let's kinda dig into this hummus here. Um I got the overhead cam ready. Okay. All right, give us a demo. Okay.
You wanna try to find w the scoop side so you can scoop it a little bit. Now you wanna leave enough enough hummus for everyone. So I go maybe that much, just a little oop oops there there and then um you wanna bring it up to your mouth and that's where food goes. And then Yeah. Uh uh uh Stubbs, have you ever uh stirred the hummus up to kinda get the whole jar a tub of hummus all kinda whipped and creamy? Uh yeah.'Cause like it's in this store it kind of gets all dense.
But like then when you give the whole thing like a a fresh little whip whipping and it kinda comes out all fluffy and and goopy. Yeah, Ban is the the the the king of beans. He taught me about garbanzo beans and how you smash them together and you make the hummus. And uh so yeah, I do spend hours to minutes to hours kind of smoothing my hummus. And yeah, I agree, man. It's it's good. Good for the taste buds, it's good for the soul. So that's what I got for you.
Coming back to carrots, carrots and hummus, good combo too. Oh yeah. Yeah. And a healthier snack, a healthier option. Yeah.
¶ Potato Perfection: Smashed Potatoes
Uh we had another uh another super chat from uh from my boy, Green Pro Tag. Uh best way to cook a potato. My vote, tater tots. I have the best answer, but I'd like to hear your uh your second best answers first. Best way to cook a potato, what do you think? Mean that Augrotten, sir. You would. You would. It's a fine a fine way. Your A. Yeah, probably said Tethertop. Do you got do you got one wrong or I'm struggling because I I mean
I love potatoes. I actually don't eat them much nowadays. I'm I'm trying to We don't care about your health, Ros. Just told you, you know. Trying to cut back on on those on those unhealthy potatoes. French fries. I just gotta go French fries. Uh yeah.
Just because also there's so many styles of french fries, right? I mean, you you got the the crispy ones, you got the curly ones, you got the zesty ones. We could just go on. It's amazing how versatile the potato is, you know? And especially french fries. All right, so the the the uh the real answer is uh what's called smashed potatoes. So this is what you do. You chop the potatoes up into big big cubes like that, big chunks, you know, uh fork size chunks.
And then you boil them. So they're they're mostly boiled. Okay. And then you lay them out on a baking tray and you kind of half smash them, kind of just kind of give them a little squish so they kind of fall apart just a little bit. And then you give it a little spray with oil or uh or cooking spray or whatever and you put your yeah.
Oh not that much. Not that not that smashed. That's like you can smash them to your uh to your heart's contentment. But uh you kinda kinda give them a little smash and what it does is uh and then you put them in the convection oven or the the air fryer. And what it does is uh the smashing kinda opens them up and it creates all these little pockets for like the hot air to get in there and turn it crispy like every little every little crevice becomes all crispy on the inside.
And so it's moist and and flavorful and also super crispy and uh just like fall apart in your mouth. First time in five years the word moist has been used on the show. So I don't think that's true, but I'm not gonna fact check that. Maybe that can be like a word of the day thing. Whenever somebody says moist, we'll like have like some noise that comes on, some moist noise and Andrew, do you like moisture? He's close to being cancelled, we can't do that. Ha ha ha. Reset the moist tracker.
Yeah. All right. Uh okay, so uh let's uh keep this uh this going. As much as I could talk about potatoes all dang day. That wasn't even one of the questions.
¶ Show and Tell: First Retro Handhelds
This is a retro handheld podcast, exactly. Oh wait, wait, no, that was the wrong dice. What's the next question? Hey you could use a potato to power one of your retro handhelds. Poutine, Alex Sotello. Yeah. All right, so uh here we have uh. Uh scroll down. Uh your first retro emulation do that. We're talking about the topic. What's the topic? Uh your first retro handheld uh doodad. Is that it? Thumbnail. Yeah. That was risky. I we almost didn't cause Rob k uh cause ca it's Rob's fault, but
Rob left that answer out originally and then I was like, Oh wait, we almost we need to do that and that that means I almost left it out and we almost left it out. But it's my fault ultimately for not. Badgering him. Before I roll on that, we have another super chat by Alex. Soleto 180 and he says glad you didn't say poutine and uh I didn't because I needed to explain the smashed potatoes because the best poutine is when you make it with smashed potatoes. Yeah. That's the one I have to do.
Yeah. That's that's what we say. Yeah. No. Alright. Uh who's up first? Uh looks like Stubbs is up first. All right, Stubbs, you're Oh why?
¶ Stubbs' GPD XD Legacy
It's me. Your first retro have. Okay, my first retro handheld was the GPD XD. Let's go. The original clamshell, love of mine, for retro emulation. This played up to some Dreamcast. Uh really good at Sega Saturn actually for its time. This was released in twenty fifteen. It was GPD's first Android handheld. And uh just just awesome. It's thirty two bit, not sixty four, which is kind of crazy. And we ran an OS on here we'd like to load on called uh Legacy ROM by Skelton. And you could
customize the CPU governor. Like you could just cut you could disable cores so I could get it down to you know, like one core and run SNES games. And this thing has freaking thirteen hours of battery life if you do that, if you just run it on the bare minimum and then take everything else out. It was it got me hooked into the whole hobby. What uh what made it good for Saturn? Uh just the chipset which I can't remember the name. That's the GPU. It was a rock chip, wasn't it?
And Power VR was the GPU, but those combined allowed For whatever reason, the Saturn emulation played well with this. Saturn Saturn ran better on this than the GPD XD Plus, which was the follow-up. And a couple years after that, uh they had the revision of the XD Plus. And that didn't run Saturn as well, if I recall, but it did run PSP well, and you could play better N64, Better Dreamcast, so both the XD, XT plus, XT plus revision, my loves, and there's a bunch of cool mods you can do like
I did right here put in the GPD win two buttons so they're nice and colorful. You put in better uh membranes. I put a a uh uh Nintendo D S Lite D pad in there. Oh no wait, no. That's the original D pad. That's the original D. Membranes are replaced. Right. The uh Dead Fred says it's the uh uh three two eight eight. The three two eight eight. Okay, so X XD, the the first one, had the rock chip, then they went to um I think a media test. For the media tech. And then it was no slouch.
Yeah, they're both good. Yeah. Yeah. It was cool. It second one was sixty four bit. I could give you guys a bunch of nerdy specs and things back. Actually the cool thing about the XD that you have though is that it's because it's thirty-two bit, it will run with thirty bit apps that you cannot run on modern Android. So it's actually worth saving and having around to play some of those older games that were ported over.
And the battery uh sits idle and then on standby forever. I bet you if I push the power button, it might even turn on. I haven't turned it on in a long time. There it is. No, I forget to charge anything before the show. Actually that is that is valid. Oh, it has ROM. We got legacy ROM. This was the first custom firmware I ever had experience with. That's a nice logo.
And then of course, you know, you know who took this over eventually? Now they have Lineage OS on here, which was made by our friend Um Black Sarah. Simple language really gave it extra life as well, which is just kind of wild. I just keep the one app, I just keep Retro Arch thirty two bit on here with my game list and I scrape Um Good question. The uh the retro arch version of Saturn or of the Beal that you're running or or yeah. Or you're using Yabba?
Uh let's see. Let's pull in the Saturn here. I don't know why I'm so interested in it. A hundred dollars maybe about? Yeah, because that was the question in chat, which was actually it's actually a good question. Isn't my original GPD XD, okay? My original one was just the black unit, and I got it for probably like 150 when I bought it new. Something like that. And then I think uh maybe it was about$200 when these were new. Let's try what Clockwork Night.
What's the what's the tougher Saturn game, Rob? Bands are. Saturn game. Oh man. Depends on your dragoon. Yeah, I don't know. Hard to emulate Saturn games. Uh the uh uh die hard arcade game is not uh super easy. So we kind of gives me problems. It's yeah. I don't have the one on here, but okay I'll do Panzer Dagoon. Uh we got Beetle Saturn, Yabasan Shiro, and Yabos. I don't remember which one's gonna be best. Yabuse. I wanna say I wanna say Yabba. No, no good, no good. Bail to open core.
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. This one isn't fully set up. Anyways, this is an awesome handheld. The Sega Rally's a good one too. It was a good one in chat. I won't go into a whole demo right now, but uh I gotta g I gotta give this one some more love and attention. But I have to. Still holds up though, you know. That that's the thing about it. It's what, more than a decade old and it's still actually usable and Worthwhile.
You can still game with it and play a lot of games. I mean, it it's awesome. The ergonomics. Fantastic. Well it is what we say about too. And uh you got top you know, you got top joysticks on here and You got inline shoulders, but man, it's not bad at all. And just you could have HDMI out. Uh if you can find one of these, it's still one of my favorite retro handhelds to this day. Um it plays games very well. And everything about it is my favorite.
All right. Excellent uh excellent doodad. That's for sure. Well, it's my turn, so uh I guess uh that's a good segue. All right.
¶ TechDweeb's Beloved Bit Boy
Listen, listen. Do the boy. Uh my uh my bezel broke. The bezel around the screen and it it broke my heart a little bit. So uh it's an imperfect uh example of this beautiful Uh so the uh for those that don't know, this is uh the uh uh the new Bit Boy and uh this is uh made by um Uh the same the the company that me that became Miu. Uh so this is sort of like uh the first version of the Miu Mini. Uh and uh before the Miu Mini, this was my favorite thing.
And then the Mew Mini came along and replaced it. I'd love to I'd love to uh find like a used one or replace the bezel or something just for the nostalgia. But um yeah, this thing This thing got me hooked up. Uh uh technically wasn't actually my first first. Uh somebody gave me like a really crappy uh guy, it's over there somewhere. Like a a really crappy thing that couldn't even handle all the Super Nintendo and uh uh barely any Game Boy Advance.
Uh and uh that that that that convinced me to uh look into these for real. But this is the first one that I bought and and got. And I beat so many games on this. Uh so many uh Game Boy Advance games. I beat uh both Advanced Wars and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Final Fantasy E one one and two.
Uh what else did I beat? Uh oh I yeah, I could go through my uh my save games on here. There's tons of up And uh yeah, it made me fall in love with these uh these uh adorable special little uh doodads that you can just take around with you and fill with your entire childhood.
worth of games, the history of retro games in your pocket, bring around with you everywhere on this tiny little Game Boy that makes you feel like uh like uh the future like a a a magic piece of tech from the future. Give this to your younger self and uh it would have blown your mind. For like I forget how much this was, but it was like I don't know, like forty bucks or something.
Yeah, like forty or fifty, I think. Dude, I love the Bit Boy. I uh I like that it has rumble. You could play PS1 games on there and the rumble felt really good for the time. I was like, oh, this is so cool. Yeah, you had to use the special rumble version of the emulator to get it and uh yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, PS one. You could play PS one on not every PS one game, obviously, not like the Mew Mini, but Like uh the Quake ports and stuff?
Yeah, yeah. Yeah, you totally can. Uh what what other uh obviously the Doom uh angles what ports do I have on here? I turned it off. That's right. Yeah, no, Biff Boy's the Biff Boy's still a nice handheld. Are you missing the front bezel on yours? Yeah, he he lost the bell. Yeah. Ha ha ha. Thanks. It's one of the only uh devices that I've ever dropped and had break. And it's uh glas it's a glass bezel. Yeah, that's the one.
Uh and uh uh they they actually sold replacement bezels at one point, but I didn't get in on that early enough and um I don't I I you can't get them anymore. So if anyone has a broken bid boy they wanna send my away, feel free. I might have actually one that's not broken that I'm probably gonna send your way. Oh that that would be lovely. Maybe we can uh you scratch my butt, I'll scratch yours. Well,
Yeah, that's great. Yeah, we'll we'll we'll we'll we'll get that sorted in the green room. Uh yeah, so uh that's my uh that's my uh first hand held and it it it started this whole thing. Uh wouldn't be here doing this if it weren't for that little It's me again. Oh, this dice is a terrible idea. I should have done the names in the hat. Four. That's a new name. Uh Andrew. Andrew, what is what was your first retro handle?
¶ Andrew's RG353V & Miyoo Mini Comparison
It was this one, the RG three five three V. That's a good one to start off. Nice theme you got going on there. Yeah. When the screen wasn't on look when the when the camera wasn't on me. Um but yeah, I picked it up from Amazon. Um, because I had never bought anything from AliExpress before. And I just was like scrolling through Amazon and this popped up in my recommendations. Um I think it was like 150 bucks, maybe 175. Yeah. Pay paid no tax.
I just knew that was like it ran Android. This one is the dual boot. Yeah. So it runs Android and Linux. Uh but I loved and I still loved like the the vertical Game Boy color DMG feel with the shoulder buttons and everything. It's just it's still comfortable to hold today and like play games on. I feel like um Yeah. Hamberdick has sort of regressed a little from from these days. They have a lot of that.
Um and then this from here I went to the complete opposite end of the spectrum and got a Miumini four V four in blue, which is on my wall to my left or to my right. Um which was like I don't know, thirty or forty bucks or something like that. But yeah, no. I'm afraid to unplug it'cause I don't know if it'll the battery but I need to replace the battery. Yeah.'Cause I ran it out a lot when I first got it and it's just not held up well over time.
This one is fun to mod too and there's a like skins you can get from Etsy to put on it, replace the back shoulder buttons and I did the Sequo Retro Mod buttons on it. Uh Same. Oh yeah. Just the uh just the Game Boy ones. Actually I got it right here. Hang on. Yeah, I haven't fired this up in a a long time, but yeah. Yeah. Good. Do you have an Odin three? Do I have an odin three? Yeah. You no did you replace the buttons?
¶ Handheld Button Painting Guide
Uh no I painted them. Hang on. Okay. Because I I have been thinking about I I've got the ON3 Ultra. Oh that looks soaked. That's what I want. That that's exactly what I want. That's what I was thinking about is And then you brought up your you you mentioned the button mods. It made me think to ask you where you got yours from, but if you just painted'em, I'm not gonna do that. Yeah. I've a I have a video of how to do it. It's uh it turns out great.
Uh uh so I whenever I show off that in uh in a video, I get people who are like, Oh, that's gonna chip off and flake off or whatever. This is my most used handheld. This is my daily driver Mew Mini. And I painted these buttons. And this goes with me everywhere. I've dropped it. It's just it's you know bit's been through the ringer. And uh I don't know if you could tell, but like these butt hang on, I'll I'll zoom in. I'm not ashamed. Oh, they look good. They held it perfect.
There's uh no scratches, no scuffs. It's they they they they last. So like don't be scared to paint the buttons. It's uh it turns out turns out pretty darn well. The only mistake you can really make when you're doing them. is to uh to not uh let them dry fully before you go putting it back together. Oh yeah. You gotta that would not be good. You gotta leave it to dry way longer than you think, like a week.
Don't put it together like you'll be like, Oh, that's dry enough. I'll put it together. Or it feels dry. It's only been two days, but yeah, that's dry enough. No. Let it fully dry, like cure, like for like many, many days, the longer the better. And then it you'll have a the best chance of it uh turning out fine.
Uh yeah, so uh I do that on my favorite handhelds that I love. So if I ever if I ever do it for one of my d devices and you see that I've done it, that's that's how you know that I like it that much. Interesting. Thank you for the tip. I'm going to find that video. Yeah. What camera films your hands right now, Dweeb, if I if I may ask? It is the uh Sony Alpha A six thousand and Oh
I don't know if I would uh recommend it. It's just the one that I have and uh I would replace it for something that did what I needed a little better, but uh I'm I'm uh I'm a creature of habit and I know that I know exactly how to do everything I wanna do on this one and exactly the way that it does it. And uh I don't wanna go spending a thousand bucks on something else or whatever that I got that.
Might not just, you know, yeah. Have a I I figured out every single thing about this and it's sorta yeah. But it's it's not not the best option. It's just a an option. I bought it used off Facebook Marketplace and uh yeah. Before this I was using my phone. My uh if you look at my early videos, don't look at them, they're terrible. But if you Uh they're they're all they're all filmed on my uh my h my Huawei P thirty light. We we all can relate. All of our early videos.
We all started with our phones. Yeah. Yeah. Uh door that's from doorman Mike as well. Thanks. Good question, man. Uh continuing on, uh number four, uh and Drew. Oh wait, do we did we do everyone else except for one? Just me. Take us home.
¶ Rob's GP32: Grandfather of Emulation
Sure. Well I mean I guess it's kinda fitting I'll take Home to the the original, the OG, the grandfather of it all, of all emanation handhelds, the GP thirty two. Yeah. Hey. Yeah no. It's an MP card. Korea from South Korea. So before their Chinese emulation handhelds, this was it. And this is pretty old. This is this is
Man, this is like 2004, I wanna say, even maybe even earlier than that. And you know, you could do Game Boy, you could do NES, Genesis, um, a lot a lot of stuff on it. It was actually pretty cool. And the the fuck the crazy thing about this handheld was that it wasn't even intended to be an emulation device. It just it was very open ended for developers and it just sort of got a lot of community support and so developers started porting emulators over to it. Yeah. And it's just yeah.
It really is the OG. It really is the grandfather of it all. I do I think in many ways without GP thirty two we probably not would not have had things like the the dingoo and then of course the GPD stuff and all and where we are today. So yeah, if you trace back the the history of our hobby, this is probably where it all started. This is even before the Dingunity forums too, right?
Yes. I was just about to ask if that was Pinball Dreams you were playing on there and then Pinball Dreams video popped up. Yep. Yeah. Yeah, I mean it was cool because it came out during the time of the Game Boy Advance, and so you know, you had Game Boy Advance and you know, you play Nintendo games on there. GP thirty two allows you to play the Nintendo games, the Sega games, and even some of these kind of questionable quality games that were developed for it.
But it's you know very iconic design, you know, BA, you got your shoulder buttons, obviously it was trying to imitate and mimic the Game Boy Vance, very much similar style. The D-pad on this thing is an absolute joy. It's the clickiest, most satisfying D-pad you could use ever. Like It reminds me of the Neo Geo Pocket. It's so good. Clicky satisfaction. Yeah, it's just it's really very much ahead of its time, you know, and in
huge support in the community. I mean, it was pretty affordable, you know. I mean you had to kinda go through like questionable avenues to to import it from, you know, weird overseas websites and things like that.
It never got like a global launch. I think the later models, they had three different models of it. The later ones I think were actually launched officially in Europe. So you could actually buy from like a European website. But, you know, never in the US. You always had to use like some importer or things like that. But Yeah, and this thing probably still turns on, it takes double A batteries. Love it. This one's my backlit unit. Yeah, still works great. I mean tha that's the beauty.
Love love the removal batteries. That that's kind of very important. I've got like all stuff loaded up on here. Quake. Let's see. We were talking about Doom. I probably have Doom on here. Yes, I do. Okay, so we're loading Doom. Yeah, a lot a lot of ports. Yeah. Yeah, press start to launch. While you're launching that, Synchrotron says the company he works for uses Ambernic devices to program hundreds of thousands of dollars of AMRs that move materials in and out of trailers.
Industrial application. Industrial Ambernic. Wow. But that felt uh like. Stereo speakers. Way better than the Game Boy Vance. I mean, pretty decent. No, have you seen Doom on the Game Boy Advance? Yeah. That version of the first one. I love the little bump outs here. Yeah. Look at those. Yeah. Yeah, I mean it's definitely better than Game Boy Advance Doom for sure. Yeah, I mean this is awesome, like.
And they had three models. So the first original model had no backlight, nothing. It it was like the Game Boy Advance, kinda the same kind of provisions. Then you had the frontlit one where it had the lighting, you know, on the sides, and then they actually did the backlit one, which is the one I have here, so it's the latest provision.
But yeah, it's it's just a wild piece of history. I mean, South Korea of all places, you know, really ahead of the game in terms of emulation and and just open source and open ended devices like this. It's really cool. There's a GP thirty two magazine. Yeah, I I actually remember the G P two uh G P thirty two forums and everything back in the day, like to get all the files and help and Kinda like what the community is today with R H. It's kind of cool, you know, you can trace it way, way back.
Well, okay. Uh let's uh Yeah. I like selfish's comment. Yes, that is probably true. This is probably where I started to really appreciate a fine bedonk, you know. Look at look at these things. Poop. Some some humps to squeeze. All right. Uh moving along. What do we got here? Number two.
¶ Show and Tell: Modded Handhelds
A hand held you modded in some way, another handheld question. A hand held you modded. All right, who's it gonna be first? We're going right to st uh Andrew first. Andrew, you want to start us off? A handheld you modded if you have.
¶ Andrew's 3D Printed RGB20SX
Oh yeah, unfortunately. Hey that's pretty good. This is a R G B yeah, except until only because my camera's not like bright en or good enough to for you to see how bad it is. The S machine. Yeah, the t RGB RGB twenty sx with a three D printed kale shell and buttons, except for the What? Is this PC the PC B Way mods? N no, it's just 3D printed. I don't remember I big I think it started because it's got the flat back. Right, I remember that mod.
yeah i did this one like a long time ago I remember this was one of the early ones you modded, right? But yeah. This is the only one I've modded to this extent, besides like swapping up buttons. Like on my um Uh Andrew there's a super To see the front of your hat. Um disappear. Yeah. Thought it was the Aspro hat. No, that's on the wall. Was that Oral's? Orioles. That's a baseball team. Correct. I got it. We we did it. Is that a a three D printer you have behind you? Gracias. It is. Nope.
Oh, your anchor. Oh. Yeah. Oh no. The anchor only you know only only in second. The one they don't make anymore because they don't they they stopped making Crap. Supporting. Mm-hmm. Dweeb, do you have baseball in Canada? Yeah. Yeah, sorta. It's uh It's not it's it uh any sport other than hockey is always gonna play second fiddle to our uh national pastime. But uh I don't I don't care about any of them, so they're all equally boring and dull to me. Do you care about hockey? Nope.
I'm a bad Canadian. I like hockey video games. Uh I I always uh every single year I download the uh NHL ninety four, the updated one. Yes. The roster updates yes and so. Yeah. Oh they they keep it up but but like I don't I don't know the players. They're like, Oh, look at all the new logos and players and this and that and I'm like, Okay, if you say so
I I just like that they keep updating the mechanics and they just m every year it just gets a little bit tighter. Uh the graphics get a little bit better. It's so wild what they've done with that in just the last couple of updates. Yeah, what legends. I love it. Other so other than this whole mod, um I swapped out my um my better buttons or I got better buttons for my four seven seven M, which is not within arm's reach. And although besides that, I just really just swap uh get SSDs, larger SSDs.
All right. Synchrotron started our R G Oral Fund. Yeah. Yeah. Well uh R H R H. We'll discuss what that goes for. Is that an INEO uh Uh Evo. But this is the McT this is j it's not even a mod. Give that to me. or it's the... Mm-hmm. Oh right. I have one of those on my uh Steam Deck, the uh the little kickstay. The mechan oh the mechanism line? Or the what's that nice? Those guys. Or that that that crew. Mechanism makes some good stuff. Yeah.
Uh is and why I will show them is because they give away all of their almost all of their 3D print almo almost all of their products as 3D prints. They're you can get them on their website. So they're like, do it yourself if you want. Yep. And I think that that is an awesome way to do things. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The the goodwill that they get is worth more than the m the money that they uh like quote unquote lose by people not buying their stuff and just printing it themselves.
'Cause like yeah, that's uh it's the way to do it. Uh okay, we have a few super chats. Oh, we already did the orals fun one. Uh uh Andy Ya Yakerman 7123 says hottest hands in the industry, they said. I'm assuming that that refers to me and uh thank you, my friend. All right. Uh I will uh I will continue to uh tantalize you with my uh flappy fingers. Uh number three. Uh who's number three? Uh Rob, you're up. Rob, uh what is your uh Modded handheld that you're gonna show us.
¶ Rob's Epitome Miyoo Mini Mod
What is my modded handle? Here we go I got. I'm sure a a lot of people have done this. The Mi You Mini. Oh brother. Better shoulder buttons. I swapped out face buttons, D-pad, all that good stuff. And I think this one in our community is probably one of the most modded handhelds out there, right? I mean, yeah. Simple to take apart.
Easy to get parts for it. Removal battery. I mean it this this thing is like the epitome of what a retro handheld is, right? I mean it's just yeah. I think many people jumped into the community because of this handheld right here. Sorry, Rob, did you say epitome? Yeah. Isn't it a epitome? You want to add that to your dictionary? Yeah. It's a Rob's dictionary. I'm sorry, you d that's uh the first time I've ever heard one of uh a Robbism. Call it out, but it starts right.
I had to. I couldn't leave the one B. That's beautiful. You don't get many opportunities for it, right? I know. Look at that thing. That looks like uh like a like a high end uh bath product. Love it. You know.
I thought I grabbed my Game Boy Advance, but I didn't. But yeah, I mean this one for sure is like one I always think of just in terms of modding and seeing lots of videos on it and and just parts and you know, this kinda I think started um all the whole Etsy thing too where people were three printing their stuff. Yeah, I mean classic, right? Probably powers on too. There you go. Never fail.
Do you uh uh do you do you ever match your front end with the the vibe of the device to make it all matchy? Y you know, I should do that kind of stuff. I'm very bad about that. I'm not good about the customization stuff. I usually just dive right in, you know. Yeah. Just have onion OS on there. The Techweed theme is on OS and that comes in. Cảm ơn các bạn đã theo dõi và hẹn gặp lại. Oh yeah. I'll have to match them up.
All right. Uh boah boah, boy the beauty. Uh that's that's that's gonna take the win. Uh number two, uh Stubbs. Stubbs, that's gonna be a tough act to follow. It's always tough to follow a Miu Mini. The only thing that can follow a Mew Mini is another Mew Mini. Okay, well. Thank you. This is uh Rob printed me this dinosaur. Nice. Yeah. A little baby one. Hello. Oh I played that. Oh yeah. Great game. Give me give this to my son tonight when he gets home. I played that split screen with my cousin.
Yeah, it's so much fun. What's on this hard drive? Five hundred gigabytes. That's not what the question is. Oh. It's technically Ban's. Why did he why did it come from you to my house?
¶ Stubbs' Camo RG35XX & Garlic OS
The RG three five XX. Yeah, I know that one. Three five X X. This is my favorite handheld tomat. I wonder if this one actually Yeah. Oh yeah. I thought I was watching Russ for a second. The green tricked me out. Yeah. Well maybe we maybe you are. Maybe one of us is Russ here. Get the get the lines going. So yeah, we need the lines. So uh this is one that was three D or that was
3D printed buttons. The shell was painted by a guy in our Discord. I believe this was from Roof Pooper. This was a Roof Pooper, like uh might have been a Roof Pooper reject. one'cause it had some imperfections in it and I just I've fallen in love with this particular unit. I just decided to just take the kind of the poop green idea and just add in purple buttons and we got cloud nine. Uh three D printed buttons there. These ones are from a guy who I don't know if he still makes these.
I think these are cloud nine. Uh and then on the back we have the various shop from Japan who made these better buttons. He got the better button file uh from the gentleman and made those so that feels good. I put a Game Boy color sticker right there. And just you got garlic 1.4.9. I freaking love garlic. And yeah, this was such a good operating system too because
You could uh it was the it was their it was Black Seraph's take on on Unos. Just simple and man, you just play your games. Look what I got in here. Super Metroid for game of the month. Oh, Spyro the Dragon. Oh no, Twisted Metal. Yeah. Did uh did garlic ever come to uh the XX devices? Look at how he has Twisted now ready to go. Kind of it garlic two point oh but it didn't really Like this was the best version of garlic. Didn't feel like garlic.
Yeah. Someone said the color choice is um reminiscent of a moldy sandwich in the fridge. That's right. I think it's charming. I think Like some g some glowing mu glow in the dark mushroom. Deserves to be loved. It deserves yeah, absolutely. We got Tenshu on there. Oh, Spyro. So PS one's my favorite retro system and I just love PS one games on here. It's a lot of fun. I also played I beat a lot of game of the month on this particular unit in my time, so
See what was the hotkey to turn down the brightness? There it is. Yeah, hotkey in the volume. That's right. Probably load the game. Ah, okay, there's my game. Oh no, okay. So here's the thing is in the menu I have I have the slow motion on. Hold on. Here we go. No, and that's fast forward. I haven't used this in a while.
Now is it normal? Oh whatever. Okay, so this is the three five XX. You know, this was their first one uh in this three five XX line and I just thought it was awesome. You know, the the Miyu Mini was big that year, but the three five XX is what stole my heart. So yeah, Ambernik really made a good one here. They made awesome follow ups with the H seven hundred devices. Sure, yeah, those are great too, but I just still love this with one point four point nine.
The frickin' best. What else we got in here? We got Tenshu. Supermetric. It's the epitome. Right, popful mail. This is like my graveyard of Game of the Month games that I attempted to finish actually. That's what these ones are right now. Well at least you played them. I tried. Right. This is when I would take camping all the time though. Like this is the one I would Oh that makes that makes more sense now. It's camo colored. It's camo, yeah. So then the wildlife
And the bears the bears wouldn't try to take it. And you know the bells can smell the buttons. So and the Bears, you know, they they they they're cool. The the pink buttons are to blend in with like a bush full of berries or something. Yeah. Yeah. They look like little berries. Yeah. I like it. It's pocketable. Still we'll never get rid of this one. Okay. Well, uh uh is uh has everyone gone but me? I guess I gotta go. All right. It's the epiphone, epiphone.
¶ TechDweeb's Miyoo Mini Collection & BMO Mod
All right, so uh uh r uh I'm gonna follow Rob's lead and go with uh Mew Mini. But I'm gonna do more than one. I'm gonna show you my collection. So I have every color. So here's my white one. And I did the uh these are the Sakura buttons, the uh convex uh light purple and the uh con or sorry, concave light purple and the convex uh dark purple, Super Nintendo style. That's the best. Yeah, you like to you like to s have a hybrid situation there.
Yeah. Uh this one is uh the same uh the same hybrid, uh convex and concave. Uh this is just my uh little yellow guy. Right there. This one here is the uh uh orange and black one, obviously. And uh these are the lid NXT buttons, the uh sort of semi-transparent ones that have like, you know, the the plastic layer underneath. with the uh matte plastic printed over top. I freaking love these buttons. They uh they feel great and they look cool. And then uh
My uh Daily Driver, that's the one that I painted. I've never done the the shoulder buttons. I don't I don't even know if I would like them to be honest. I r I I I'm like the only person in the world who actually loves the original music. I'm with you. Yeah. Yeah, because because once you add the the modded buttons on the back it's you can't fit in a lot of the cases for it. In your pocket it kinda rubs against you when you're trying to pull it out of the pocket and yeah. Wow.
Yeah. Yeah, but still totally usable. My fingers just go right there and they're just exactly where I need'em. Anyways. Yeah, that's the one so I painted that and then the photo No, the BMO? Yeah, that's the one. Yes. Yes. They call it a he and a she in the show. They Uh there we go. Bemo. So uh the bu those who don't know, Bimo is a little character from a show called Adventure Time, and uh he's got uh colorful uh buttons on him. Oh here I could show you. Algebraic. Algebraic mathematical
Uh yeah, that's uh that's BMO there. Uh that's from one of my other show and tells. But uh that's the uh the the Bemo style right there with the yellow D pad and sh uh got these little blue buttons here and different color buttons there and uh I think BMO is she and football is uh he. Uh yeah. That that could be. Uh anyways, uh and then the uh the only game you need on uh a BMO Miu Mini is the uh Oh hang on, gotta change the aspect ratio. What's the hotkey for that? There.
Is it the virtual BMO? Uh there you go. You got a little BMO uh uh game that's like turns it into a BMO. BMO operating system and you can make her happy and laugh and uh yeah. That's uh kind of it. You kinda just change your face. And then why isn't this one your daily driver? Uh it's a little too precious and uh uh uh it's uh I don't know, uh so as much as I like BMO and uh as much as I like the the colorful vibes and the interesting aesthetics
I just I can't argue with the Game Boy DMG. This one uh transports me back in time in a way that none of these other cool looking lovely things uh do. No, that's fair, man. And so uh yeah, when I'm when I'm ootin' the boot, as we say in Canada, pulling this out just may uh uh makes me feel different than uh any of these. But that's uh not to say I don't use them though. I will uh every now and then just for for funsies, I'll grab one of these instead.
And one of the things that I do is I have different uh save games on the go. So uh You know, this is uh this is the one where I have my fire emblem save. And this one I I uh I play I'm I'm I'm going through uh Super Nintendo hidden gems. So all the the best uh Super Nintendo games that fly under the radar. I have saves going for all those on here. Uh so uh uh if I'm in the mood to play certain games, I might grab a different uh handheld uh because that is just where those uh games are.
G G wonders if you take the uh that one to go to the Bank of Montreal, the BMO? I t I take BMO with me to go to BMO and while I'm talking to the tellers, they're like, Welcome to BMO and I say, Oh yeah, well take a look at this BMO and they say, What are you doing? Why are you sh shoving that toy in my face? What do you want? W why are you here? That's how it goes.
¶ Miyoo Mini Rarity & Future Giveaways
P Money is wondering if uh he should be stocking up on mini V four as well while he can. Can you? I th they're they're basically gone at this point. Yeah, where do you get them from now? For everyone Usually if you can find them, it's only the black one, which is a fine choice. The black one's a beautiful
Especially if you uh if you mod the buttons. You can uh you can put all black buttons and go all stealth mode or uh uh orange buttons and you do the black and orange thing or or whatever. Black goes with everything, so you can mod the heck out of that one. But uh uh if you can find them usually it's the black one. Like you won't find this one. I've actually uh uh when I made my l uh little goodbye me mini video
I ordered three of them and I ordered them from Lid NXT and they sent me a couple extra ones. So I actually have like five waiting in the wings. And someday in like two or three years. When these things are long gone and nobody can ever find them again, I'm gonna do a giveaway where I give away like three or four of my uh Game Boy DMG Mew minis. 'Cause uh yeah, uh I don't I d uh I need a couple I uh to to save'cause I wanna have this forever.
Uh and you know, one of them could die. So I ha I I have like I have my V one and my V three and then I have two V fours. The th this one that I painted and then the other one uh I might have it over here. Anyway, I have another V4 that's like my backup that's got the secure mod buttons. And then uh all the rest of them I'm gonna do a giveaway just for uh for uh for those uh uh poor souls who never never got the the mu mini.
It'll be my uh my favorite giveaway that I've ever done. Uh I I'm I'm excited about it. But yeah I gotta give it enough time where it's it's so rare that like it's a special That's awesome. Uh Enoch Sayan uh gave a very generous super chat chat and said you're amazing tech tweak.
Well, thank you. Thank you. Yes. Uh we uh uh you know, i i the the sometimes you know something and it's uh uh nice to be nice to be reminded of something you might not have th thought of for the last five minutes or something, right? So thank you. All right. Moving along. Uh what time do you usually uh run this show, Stubbs? Uh I'm I'm fine. I'm fine with going for the next six or seven hours, but uh I don't know how we can usually keep this going. Yeah.
Yeah, so I I probably myself anyways, I probably gotta run in about fifteen minutes or so, I'd say. But I mean Usually about two hours. Yeah, yeah. You know, one to two hours somewhere in there. But, you know, it's Friday night, we're we're little looser here on these shows, so uh Yeah. Cellfish says you can get black version fours on Amazon right now, apparently. So go buy those up, everybody.
Yeah, sometimes I mean sometimes you can find them but they're like, you know, scalper priced or way overpriced. Right. Yes. Yeah how much those like you can you can if you go to AliExpress you can find uh a DMG one, but it'll be like a hundred and fifty bucks, you know. Yeah. Yeah. So I can't find one. Yeah. I'm I'm actively looking for one'cause I ge uh I yep. I got rid of mine. I have a space. Yeah. I have a second one, Andrew, if you want one. Yeah. James, do you want
¶ Retro Handheld Shortcomings & Final Show and Tell
Yeah. I'm holding out hope that uh the that form factor comes back. Like uh I love the Mew Mini, but like I'm not like Like loyal to it. If something else came along that did what this duh did, I'd throw this in the freaking garbage or whatever and get the news thing. That's fine. Uh The trim UI brick is pretty close. Yeah it doesn't have the retro vibes. Yeah. But well I w I was I was hoping that uh Stop squishing.
I was hoping we would have had a RG two eight XX V. It's the one that Amberlik didn't do. And they have the screen for the two eight XX. They could have, and they should have. Yeah. Everybody loves the Miu Mini. It would have been a no brainer for them to do their version. They did every other frickin' combination you could ever want under the sun and they didn't do the one that I wanted. The one. The one. They didn't do it. So like screw those guys. Yeah, come on. Come on, Max.
All right. Don't uh don't get me started. I'm I'm getting angry. All right, let's uh let's do one final one. Nine. What is nine? A book. Oh, we already did a book. Hang on. Uh twelve. Uh oh that's fun. Something from your childhood. Yeah buddy photo or story if you don't have any actual story. Uh it's a great way to end on, I think. Yeah I think so too.
Shame we didn't get to the other fun ones. I have a whole chair full of fun stuff over here, but yeah, maybe we could do a follow up episode or something. Uh, we are gonna have Andrew start us off. Andrew, do you have anything from when you were a kid? Were you ever a kid? You don't look like you were ever a kid.
¶ Andrew's Civil War Reenactment Childhood
No, I came out just full beard. Yeah. You strike me as the kind of guy who's just always uh always been alwa always been uh uh uh like like uh a a I I don't know how old you are, but You you li li the kind of guy who's oh always always always been the same age his whole life. He's forty seven. Uh. 35 going on fifty, and it's been that way since I graduated since I turned thirty. I felt like uh I immediately felt like my body felt like I was fifty.
Yeah. You came out and you had you already had a pension going. Do you have any uh uh do you have any photos or anything from when you were a little dweeb? Uh not handy. Um lost a lot of those'cause my dad was in the military, so it moves around a lot. We have those Civil War reenactment photos that you were in. Don't We got those we got those Do you have those? We don't Okay. They're pretty great.
I don't think we do. I don't I don't think we do. No, they're not pinned, so you're not you're not gonna search for them. That's fine. Um Yeah. I used to do Civil War reenacting until I was about eighteen. Um there are pictures, there is evidence. Union or Confederate. Yeah. First main cavalry. Incredible. That's not no Oh yeah. No. Oh, that's just a history channel show. No. Wait, are you in? Do you dirty your hands when you're doing it like that? No, you camp out. No, you like.
Dude, Rad's Rad paid thank you for your super chat. Paid us ten dollars for me to go find the pictures. I can find them. Hold on, give me two seconds. Okay. Okay. Come back to you. Okay. Yeah. Should should we go on to another one and we'll come back around? All right, all right, all right. This is important stuff. Uh, it's just like LARPing we're talking about, right? All right. Uh that's Andrew again. Number one. Oh, that's me. Okay. Uh what do we got?
¶ TechDweeb's Basic Programming Origin
Okay, so uh the thing I brought is another book. Uh this is a a book that I had when I was a kid. And uh uh I d uh this isn't the book. I I uh I've lost the original book but I I rebought it as an adult just'cause I read this book freaking cover to cover so many times. It's a book that teaches you how to code uh in basic and it's uh all these little like robot These little like illustrations of robots doing how to make simple games of uh and and the code that makes that work.
And I had this before I had a computer. I never uh I never even used a computer when I got this. I just bought I I probably got it used at the local library or something. This book just entered my life and I just became obsessed with computers and and tech from from this book. It was I uh so, so important to uh the trajectory of my life.
Uh and uh it I I I I didn't know what this stuff meant. It was just like how to make a little jumping man animation just in and it's all basic. It's all it's all done through basic. And uh interestingly enough, I've I'm actually working on uh a video right now about uh DOS and uh in in that video I plan on showing uh GW basic running.
And I'm gonna bust out this uh this book in that video to to show how uh how uh I m used to make simple simple games. When I did eventually get a computer, I mean uh I probably had this for like a couple years before I actually had a computer. Yeah. Uh a spore and exercise books, how to practice your basic. And this book smells so much like a used book.
Yeah. Oh man, this is like like that musty musty dusty crusty smell of like a oh a oh a bo box at the back of a library storage room or something, you know? I have not this exact version, but I have a very similar basic book like this for the Atari 400. And it's just, yeah, I loved it so much as a kid. My step my stepdad and I would uh would program stuff and yeah, it was cool.
Yeah. I used to uh uh draw the characters too. I used to copy them. Uh you know, these little robot guys. I used to these guys were like rock stars in my life. This is way cooler than my version of the book. Yeah. They make other ones. Oh, yeah. This one is uh Practice Your Basic. Calculator skills, yeah.
Practice your calculator skills. I didn't have I this is the only one I ever had. And uh Uh there yeah, there's uh uh there's another basic one as well and when I went to buy it I couldn't remember which one it was specifically, so I had to like find a PDF to look through and I was like, Oh, that's the one I remember, Escape from Zorgos. Yeah. Anyway, that's mine. That's my uh little book from when I was a kid.
I started my love of uh love of computers before I ever had a computer. All right, do we have uh Civil War photos, Andrew? Pretty straight. All right, we'll we'll circle back around again. Uh let's go, uh let's see uh see who's next. Uh number two, that is Stubbs, Stubbs, you're up. Yo, yo, yo. Okay. So Oh, should I sh I don't know. Should I share this? I'll share this.
¶ Stubbs' Mick and Stripe Comic Book
Get my brightness up for you. Okay Toki. So when I was a child, and there I am as a child at the Santa what uh what zoo is it? San Diego Zoo. There's little stubs. There's a little older stuff. Mm beardless. Same bold system. Same same stubs, about eighteen years of age. This is something I've never shared, I don't think, with anybody since I was a kid. But uh I made my own comic book in fifth grade.
And I loved Calvin and Hobbes, my favorite comic book series to this day. And I and I cloned them and I called them Mick and Stripe. And totally not a ripoff of Calvin and Hobbes. You know, a I w I was I was cloning uh proprietary uh uh IP before Amberick did it, so Yeah, and then I'm just Fired. Inspired by And uh yeah, there I am. And it was even featured in the school newspaper one time, which I was really proud of. And there's one of my standard comics. I have your test results, Mick.
And then we have the that was on nineteen ninety-six this one is. Our seventh president was not Michael Jackson. Sigh. You can do better. Everyone's a critic. And it's just to add that like Calvin and Hobbes style. Like I wanted to be at their idea. Yeah. I wanted to become a artist. and do this illustration stuff when I grew up and I never ended up doing it. But this was a lot of fun and I had a lot I spent a good six months of my life trying to be a comic strip writer.
And this was a one I just literally traced, so that is an outright copy, but I started to develop my own voice in this and I got a little bit better as time went on, and then I put down the Can you walk us through like one of the best ones? Yeah, I think they got better towards the end. Like I don't know.
Yuck, I'm not eating this gunk. Eat it or just starve. That's what dads say, right? I'll starve. That's it, young man. Go to your room. Yeah, I'd like to order a pizza. Tell'em to put extra cheese on it. You know, it was just super cheesy, super corny. And there he is singing. A song from uh the what is that? Presidents of the United States? That was a big song in nineteen ninety five. Yep.
And then uh he uh he had a fantasy uh where he uh splatted his sister. I must uh my baby sister must have been born around then. I wasn't probably wasn't too happy with having a sibling. And then I ended it with Ace Ventura coming out and I did an Ace Ventura themed one. And that was the last time I n I need to finish the There's blank pages. You gotta finish the series. Finish the series. Fill your dream fulfill your dream of becoming a cartoonist. My first ones were so bad. So bad.
Yeah, you got better. That's how it works. I l I love I love that. And now my m what's funny is my daughter my oldest daughter, she's Going on eleven, she is now making comic books of her own. She's made like six of'em, way more pro uh prolific than me. And I was like, this is cool. So I showed her that book, and she was like, What? I didn't know you you you drew. So we had a good uh father-daughter moment. Yeah. It's beautiful. All right.
¶ Civil War Photos Revealed & Experience
We get those Civil War photos. The uh the suspense has been building. Oh gee, that looks like a real frickin' photo. So good. Like Taking a what the hell is the name of the place? Gibson's uh Was it uh was it taken with a uh with a r what a real like uh camera obscure or whatever they're called, like a real old car camera? Yeah. Like it was actually taken with a tin type. Uh it was in Gettysburg. Um that's why it looks the way that it does. It's not edited or anything like that.
Yeah. I mean it's been digitalized, but the that's a this was just a regular picture. Incredible. So where are you on this? You're in the front. The middle and the front. Yeah. ¿Qué tal en el otro? All the way on the left. Oh there you go. Yes. Can we zoom in on that, Sony? I love this man. Please. No beard Andrew. I when will when will I ever see no beard Andrew again? Never again. I was a little we lad. That's awesome.
Yeah. Um yeah. I my dad was into it, super into it for a while. He's always been into history. Um and he got into it. I don't even remember how. And you know, me being a daddy's boy, wanted to do it with him. Plus I got to shoot guns and learn about guns and stuff like that. So that was always fun. Didn't shoot any uh anything until like went got older and went to the range and stuff, but we shot planks and Um yeah, it was pretty cool. You gotta get back into that. I'll do it. I don't. I can't.
I can't camp like that anymore. Because it was like you said made a comment early about like hands being dirty. No, their hands are dirty'cause they're camping. Right. With like like you could have tents, but it wasn't normal to have tents. You slept And camping is intense. Sorry. Yeah, but sleeping with wool is different than sleeping with like plastic and silicon. Silicone or silicone? Cowboy Cowboy camping.
Wolf will be I would sleep like a baby like that. I don't I don't camp comfortably at all. It's fun. It it was fun. Um I can't I don't think my body could handle it anymore. Hey sleeping on the sleeping on the the hard ground as a as a fifty something guy or whatever you are. What different Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Uh I speaking of fifty year old guys, uh let's finish off. Uh Rob, take us home. Mm-hmm.
¶ Rob's Hockey Childhood Memories
Uh I sent uh producer Sony a picture of me when I was younger, probably about like ten years old. Um so my love for hockey began at a very, very young age and I actually used to play hockey and used to ice skate quite a bit and now I live in a place where um, you know, ice doesn't actually exist unless you're indoors. So yeah, whenever produce someone he puts it up, but, you know, it's just me. Kinda looking thuggish a little bit. I don't know, but Ha ha. Amazing.
With my skates and you know, coming back from the rink. This is in Brooklyn and yeah, yeah this is You know, I c I could trace back to the time where where where love for hockey began. So yeah, that's kinda weird. And look, I have no beard. Now that's the weird part for me. Look at those cars too. They're all Look at the cars, look at my hat, like man The tone of the tone of the s the sepia tone of the picture. It's perfect. I know, it's great.
Were you uh were you on a team? Oh I I swear we had that van. I swear th the Oh did it when it had a station wagon? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, totally. Mighty ducks vibes. Yeah, this is totally Mighty Ducks vibes. I think the movie's actually based on my life, to be honest. But you know, there's no we know for sure. Were you uh were you on an actual team? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, we are we I was, yeah. You get driven around doing three.
It was like the like the little little like rangers or whatever the hell they were called. Yeah. That's do you do you remember your number? Twenty five, which is just my my birthday. Yeah. You hockey guys, you always know your numbers. Yeah. Yeah, I was surprisingly athletic ish back then. Ha ha ha. I used to swim too. I was I was swimmer lifeguard certified, all that crap. Now I got a full on daggone. I'm proud of it.
¶ Reflecting on Childhood Passions
Well you know like uh That's true. If the if there if there's one thing that uh that is dawning on me uh with all these trips back in time, it's uh it's that it's not too late, you know. Uh Andrew, you could be you could be in the Civil War uh and be sleeping in the dirt still. Uh Stubbs, you could uh you could be you could be the next Calvin of uh Bill Bil Bill I could be the next Bill Watterson. Yeah, the next Bill Watterson and Hobb.
And uh Rob, you could be uh a hockey guy, a hockey star. It's not too late. Uh never too. Yeah. It could have been huge in Canada. Yeah, it doesn't take much here apparently. Yeah. And I could be a computer guy, a computer programmer that makes computer games or uh or or whatever and and makes people happy with uh with the stuff that I make on the computer. You can make uh Mark Ste Stephenson six seven four four four four four four four happy. Yeah, yeah.
Anyway, uh thank uh thank you uh uh for sh uh showing my merch store on the screen. That's much appreciated. Uh uh the the my favorite thing in there is the uh the desk mat but the the the handheld sticker. are pretty great too. My my favorite handheld's all the handheld stick. That's so good, man.
