Rethinking Scripture Podcast -

Episode 26: The Restoration of Peter (John 21)

December 9, 2021 - Host: Dr. Gregory Hall

John chapter 21 is all about restoration. The disciples limped their way through events in the garden of Gethsemane and then disbursed and deflected their connection with Jesus through the rest of that weekend. This would have left all of them, but especially Peter, with some traumatic wounds that needed to be healed. That’s what we see Jesus doing here… healing the broken hearted. In this episode, we welcome Dr. Warren Gage to the podcast to help us unpack the restoration of the disciples.

An estimated 40 major authors and many other minor authors contributed to the Scriptures over the course of many centuries. Knowing this, we wouldn’t normally expect to find a compositional unity to the Bible.

Gage, 2001. - The Heavenly Banquet provides a biblical theology of the New Testament in the form of an imagined dialogue in heaven. It is loosely conceived as a sequel to Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress. In it, Christian enters the Celestial City and has a celebratory supper with the seven principal authors of the New Testament: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul, Apollos (Hebrews), and Peter. Each of them relates the argument of their individual theologies, focusing on the love of Jesus as they each uniquely understood it.
