Episode description

New Year's resolutions are hard to keep; so many people don't even make it out of January. But I think they're still good things. Something inside of us says, "Dammit, life could be better for me. Something's gotta change." That's how it was for Israel - God looked at the state of his relationship with him and thought, something's gotta change. God calls them to be intentional in how they live their lives every day. It sounds like some New Year's resolutions to me. Do Justly - the concept of justice - how we all have this ability to sense when things aren't right. We have this because we're made in the image of a God who is just. It's a big concept. It's more than just being a good person. It's about looking at what's happening in our community, the systems behind it, and working on behalf of those who are treated unjustly. Love Mercy - translated word for word it could be translated as "love love." Love the love of God that creates community out of separate beings. It's a call to love each other with the same kind of love we have for spouses, kids, brothers and sisters. Walk Humbly - walk around in this world with an awareness of God's presence and action in our lives. This is the thing that holds the other two things together. If we're aware of the presence of God, justice and loving community with a deep deep love comes naturally. Let's make these our New Year's resolutions as a community.
