Remember The Game? Retro Gaming Podcast

Adam Blankart19.com

Comedian Adam Blank hosts "Remember The Game?", a retro gaming podcast. Each week, Adam and his guest will select a video game that they grew up playing, and spend time reminiscing about what they loved (or hated) about it. Not intended to be a history lesson, "Remember The Game?" is more like a conversation you'd overhear on the playground as a kid. The discussions are all over the place, and are guaranteed to fill you with that warm, nostalgic feeling. (Or rage, like you felt with the underwater level in the original Ninja Turtles game). Either way, it's gonna be fun! New episodes every Wednesday!

Remember The Game? #111 - Resident Evil 2

We finally delivered the Resident Evil 2 episode. Are you happy now? Leon, Claire, zombies, Mr. X. It's all here. You all know damned well what this game is, which is why you've been asking for this episode for so long. My buddy Tyler and I had a nice long chat about the going ons inside the RCPD, and I hope you enjoy it. But first! It's a new era here it Remember The Game? Industries. Our gaming news show debuts this Friday, and that means the intro to this show isn't about gaming news anymore,...

Remember The Game? #110 - Mario Kart: Double Dash

I don't think there's a game I love more that gets less damned love from people than Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (I had to read that a couple times to make sure it made sense) The two drivers in one kart mechanic was a great idea that added a fantastic layer of depth and strategy to the Mario Kart series, and frankly I think it should be an option in all Mario Kart games moving forward. Add in some of my all-time favourite tracks and that game changing controller, and you have yourself a damned ge...

Remember The Game? #109 - Blades of Steel

Before there was SEGA vs Nintendo, Playstation vs Xbox, or Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter, there was Ice Hockey vs Blades of Steel . We covered Ice Hockey wayyyy back on episode 49, and now we're finally looking at the other side of the frozen coin. Blades of Steel was my personal preference between the two, and I have a great time explaining why with my childhood chum Dan on the show this week. It's The Pass! Hit The Pass! With The Pass! Whatever they say, it helped make this game iconic, and ...

Remember The Game? #108 - Final Fantasy

Final Fantasy is one of the most iconic franchises in gaming. And unlike other hall of fame series like Zelda, Mario, Halo, and Sonic, I've never played the game that launched the franchise. Until this month, when Final Fantasy won our Patreon poll and was thrown into my backlog. And all of you, every person that reached out, said "Don't play the NES version. Play a remake!" and I thought you were all wimps. Turns out, you knew what you were talking about. I finished the original Final Fantasy o...

Remember The Game? #107 - Video & Arcade Top 10 WITH SPECIAL GUEST: NICHOLAS PICHOLAS!

Before Gamespot, IGN, and YouTube, we had Video & Arcade Top 10 . It aired in Canada on YTV from 1991 - 2006, and kids watched it religiously. It featured kids playing the newest video games, along with other gaming, music and movie news. I vividly remember seeing Super Mario RPG for the first time on this show and losing my mind! Kids across Canada loved everything about V&A Top 10, including it's longtime host, Nicholas Picholas. 14 years after the show's run ended, Nicholas still gets...

Remember The Game? #106 - Def Jam Vendetta

If you listen to the show at all, you know that I love wrestling games. Particularly the Nintendo 64 wrestling games. But what if you took the engine from those games, replaced the wrestlers with rappers, piped in some of their music and made them fight each other? You'd have Def Jam Vandetta. And it would be as awesome as it sounds. I loved these games for the fun gameplay, and it introduced me to music I wasn't familiar with. My buddy Alex loved the music, and discovered games that are as much...

Remember The Game? #105 - Super Mario World (Part II)

We've been kicking around 'revisiting' some of the games we covered in the early days of the podcast for a while, and the time has come. This week's episode is about the greatest game on the greatest console in the history of the greatest hobby in history; Super Mario World. My ol' buddy (and potential Hall of Famer) Mark McCue is back this week, and we dedicated over an hour to Mario's greatest adventure. And we could have kept going! Maybe a Part 3 down the road...? Or listen to the whole show...

Remember The Game? #104 - MediEvil

Over the past few months, I've been playing a lot of old school Playstation. Metal Gear Solid, Spyro the Dragon, WWF SmackDown!, Crash Bandicoot, and now Medievil. And I have to say; while they aren't the prettiest games, Sony's little grey box holds up! Medievil was the runner up in our Patreon Poll a couple months ago, and a very vocal percentage of our listeners wanted an episode about Sir Fortesque and his weird world. I've always been intrigued by it, so I figured "what the hell?" and fired...

Remember The Game? #103 - Oregon Trail

I have to give credit where it's due, covering this game on the show was a great idea. And it wasn't mine. Former Remember The Game? Hall of Famer Mark McCue suggested we talk about Oregon Trail, and it was a great suggestion. This was a really fun episode to record, and everybody (over the age of 30) played this game in school. Most of us remember it being awesome, too. But I'm gonna let you in on a little secret. It wasn't. It was fun because we weren't in class. You can't convince me that if ...

Remember The Game? #102 - WWF SmackDown!

I know, I know, another wrestling game. Listen, The Undertaker is retiring (allegedly). That's a big deal. Plus, I love wrestling, lots of you love wrestling, and I want to try and cash in on all the wrestling and Undertaker hash tagging on social media right now. So know your role. WWF SmackDown! was the Playstation's answer to the Nintendo 64's vastly superior WWF games. And while it's not as good as those games, it was still damned fun. Frankly, I think it's a little underrated. It brought so...

Remember The Game? #101 - Super Castlevania IV

Simon Belmont is finally making his first appearance on Remember The Game? The fact that it took 101 episodes to happen is unforgivable, but we're gonna right some wrongs in the next hundred episodes. Plus, Super Castlevania IV steamrolled the competition and took down last month's Patreon Poll, so here you go. This game kicks some serious ass. I've always liked and respected the Castlevania games, but I never really put any time into finishing one until now. Thanks to my handy SNES Classic, I c...

Remember The Game? #100 - Halo 2

These days, huge game releases are the norm. You can pre-download titles on your consoles if you're buying them digitally, or line up at the store and get it at midnight if you want to, and everyone gets excited and fucking losers spoil games early for everyone and it's just craziness. That wasn't the case back in 2004. Until Halo 2 anyways. The hype for the second Master Chief adventure was insane. We had all played the original Halo campaign to death, and we wanted more. People were completely...

Remember The Game? #99 - NHL Stanley Cup

I'm a proud Canadian, a hockey fan, and it's episode number 99. So we had to talk something with Wayne Gretzky in it. Like NHL Stanley Cup ...kinda...does. That's him on the cover! I think? NHL Stanley Cup was NHL 94 's vasty inferior competition. It doesn't have players names, full rosters, trades, the ability to edit lines, and really anything fun. All it had was a God-awful camera and goalies that couldn't look up. They tried to make a hockey game with the 'Mode 7' graphics thingy that made S...

Remember The Game? #98 - Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Practically every list of the best original Xbox games has some combination of Halo, Halo 2, and Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic as it's top 3 games. That's a fantastic "top tier" of games, and for my money it stands against any consoles all-star lineup. We talked Halo back on episode 43, and Halo 2 will be popping by for episode 100. So today I figured we'd touch on the game most consider to be the best Xbox title NOT starring Master Chief; Star Wars: KOTOR. (Plus, it won the Patreon Poll...

Remember The Game? #97 - Metal Gear Solid

We've waited long enough. It's time to talk about the iconic Metal Gear Solid. We covered the sequel back on episode 73, and the last 6 months people have been asking me "when are you covering the original?" Well, here it is. Yes, it's a better game, and yes, we probably should have covered it first, and yes it's awesome and yes we waited too long and, well, you get it. Bradley McCue of The Movie Epidemic Podcast and I broke down the original Metal Gear Solid this week. And when I say we broke i...

Remember The Game? #96 - The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons & Oracle of Ages

It's 2 for 1 week here at Remember The Game industries! This time around, we're going back to the world of Link, boring talking owls and golden triangles. It's The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons & Oracle of Ages on the Game Boy Color! If you never played these games, you're not alone (sadly). I feel like these are two of the most overlooked games in the Legend of Zelda's iconic catalog, and that's really too bad. They're both really, really good. The same basic engine as Link's Awakening...

Remember The Game? #95 - Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

We haven't shown the Game Boy Advance nearly enough love on this show. That's because I barely played mine back in it's prime, unfortunately. But one of the few GBA games I DID play (and love) is Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. This bad boy launched the "Mario & Luigi Handheld RPG" series, and along with the Paper Mario games, is the spiritual successor to legendary Super Mario RPG. It's full of charm, fun battle mechanics, overworked puzzle solving, and of course, Mario & Luigi. I ha...

Remember The Game? #94 - Spyro The Dragon

I say it every time I play a game I like for the first time, but one of the coolest things about this podcast is discover new games that I missed when they originally released. Shining Force, Shinobi 3 and Banjo-Kazooie have been my favourites so far, and you can add Spyro the Dragon to that list. This game is awesome! 3D platformers have always been very hit and miss for me, but the crew at Insomniac deserve a ton of credit for making a game that's fun, charming, and just the right level of dif...

Remember The Game? #93 - Pokemon Stadium

Another Pokemon game. Kind of. Every time we talk the monsters of pockets and their games, I get a little nervous. I know how passionate the die-hard pokeheads out there are, and one little mix-up or slip of the tongue can result in days of "actuallllllly" tweets and messages. Mark McCue is my guest this week, and we decided to talk about the Nintendo 64 behemoth that was Pokemon Stadium. This game blew minds back in 1998, and it took those little blobs of pixels we called pets on Game Boy and m...

Remember The Game? #92 - Phantasy Star IV

As you all know, I'm a former SEGA hater. I grew up on the SNES side of the 90's console wars, and missed out on most of the best games that were exclusive to Sega's little black box. In the last year or so, I've played Shining Force, Shinobi, Ecco the Dolphin; I'm trying to make up for lost time. One of the games that constantly pops up on the "best of" lists when it comes to the Genesis is Phantasy Star IV. So I finally got around to giving it a shot. And while I think calling it "Sega's Final...

Remember The Game? #91 - Megaman X3

Even if you haven't played Megaman X3, you should still absolutely listen to this episode. Everyone has a played a MM game, so it's easy to follow along, and the music alone makes this worth your time. That said, I love Megaman. But I don't love Megaman X3. It feels like a frustrating (VERY frustrating) incomplete MM game. My guest this week is the Movie Epidemic podcast's Bradley McCue, and we go over the good, the bad, and the ugly of X's third adventure. Angry Adam pops up a couple times too,...

Remember The Game? #90 - Super Mario Bros: The Movie

I've wanted to talk about this movie for a 'spin-off' type episode of the show for a long time. But then we did. And I remembered how terrible it really is. I'm not a film buff, I don't pretend to know anything about movies. And if this movie wasn't called Super Mario Bros , it might have been a weird sci-fi flick that people didn't think was that bad. But it was called Super Mario Bros . And it was that bad. As a kid, I loved it. I think most of us did. Mario and Luigi were real humans. And so ...

Remember The Game? #89 - The Lost Vikings

Some people skip episodes about games they don't know. I get that, but don't skip this one! You can play it online for free, so this is like a commercial for it. Plus, what else do you have to do these days?? The Lost Vikings is a platformer/puzzle game, originally released on the SNES and developed by Blizzard (the little known game developer behind World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch). Before anyone knew who they were, they made a game about three vikings and their adventures through spac...

Remember The Game? #88 - Mario Is Missing!

I'm considering revoking Mark McCue's Hall of Fame status for suggesting we talk about this piece of crap. Also, this episode contains more adult language than most episodes. You've been warned. This week's episode is all about the "educational"- "Mario" - "video game" (imagine that was said with air quotes) that is Mario is Missing. What should have been a sequel to Super Mario World starring the often overlooked Luigi is really nothing more than a crappy history lesson. It was designed to fool...

Remember The Game? #87 - Crash Bandicoot: Warped

It took us 87 episodes of the show to talk about Naughty Dog's apple collecting, box smashing, shirt not-wearing Bandicoot, and for that I apologize. But the day has finally come. We're talking Crash Bandicoot on the show this week, specifically Crash Bandicoot: Warped (3), and I'm damned excited. Also on this week's show: - I give the second round of shout-outs to our Patreons for March. - Reggie Fils-Aime of Nintendo fame has joined the video game nWo and is working with GameStop now. I don't ...

Remember The Game? #86 - Kirby's Adventure

Well, this episode has a much, much more positive vibe than last week's adventures with Ecco the stupid fish. We're talking about one of the best games on the NES, and frankly maybe the best Kirby game ever made; Kirby's Adventure. Before we go on Kirby's Excellent Adventure, I give some shout-outs to our Patreons. I also explain why I think the Final Fantasy VII Remake demo is a GREAT thing, even though I'm not gonna play it. I actually take a pretty long look at that game as a whole. Despite a...

Remember The Game? #85 - Ecco The Dolphin

Fuck. This. Game. This episode contains a little more profanity than your standard episode of the show, so be warned. We also only cover the first world of the game, but chances are that's as far as you've ever gotten, too. Before I start losing on my mind on Sega's giant tuna, I explain why March's Patreon giveaway prize will be bigger than normal, and I lay out some plans I have for the future. I also just bought a PS4 for the second time, and I'm looking for your game suggestions! And I expla...

Remember The Game? #84 - Sonic The Hedgehog: The Movie

Every once and a while, shows have to do something different. Christmas specials, clip shows, Treehouse of Horrors, etc. Well, this week it's a "very special" episode of Remember The Game? I'm solo, and instead of looking at a game we played back in the day, I'm looking at a movie. About a game we played back in the day. The Sonic the Hedgehog movie is out, and as a life-long Nintendo fanboy, I really liked it. Enough to dedicate an episode of my podcast to a movie about my childhood arch-nemesi...

Remember The Game? #83 - Super Punch Out!!

I think the term "hero" is thrown around too loosely these days, but this week on the show I'm shouting out our Patreons, because they're God damned heroes. I also explain why I don't cover games older than the NES on here (Atari, ColecoVision, etc). I talk about how nostalgia can drastically impact your opinion of an old video game. And finally, I rant about how a game should worry about being fun before it worries about it's frame rate, resolution, blah blah blah. Just make your game fun, noth...

Remember The Game? #82 - StarFox

This week, I touch on the Nintendo Switch surpassing the iconic Super Nintendo in console sales totals. The Wii is Nintendo's top-selling home console of all-time, can the Switch catch it? (Yes, it can). I also send my best wishes to MariKar, the Tokyo based go-kart tour company that was recently sued by Nintendo. They aren't allowed to let their clients dress up as Nintendo characters anymore, and it's sad. My girlfriend and I got to give it a shot back in 2018, and it was one of the best exper...
