YouTube giggy, look back. Welcome to remember 64, thanks for being here, man. It is awesome to be here. I love any opportunity to talk about Nintendo 64. It's it's such a strange concept. All for a lot of people myself included as far as peoples history with it. What they think of it. Now, what they thought about, then how their feelings and

thoughts of evolved. You've done a lot of really awesome like deep Dives, not just on 64 stuff, but on a lot of games and all of them honestly are from rare. Just like Donkey Kong 64 is let's actually graph the top, let everybody know where they can find your stuff and what you're doing. Because you do a lot of really cool fun, interesting and different stuff on. On your YouTube channel. Yeah. So so my YouTube channel is the main thing giggy, look back.

It's a spelled exactly how it sounds jigu. I look back all one word. I don't know why I decided to make it all one word but I did. So I think I was kind of going for like Jiggy Wiggy like I was imagining that as one word but whatever Banjo-Kazooie, I think it would be in it. Yeah yeah exactly. Banjo Kazooie fans exactly. It's exactly what it is. Yeah yeah yeah my YouTube's main thing. You know I do have Tick-Tock I see I have streamed on Twitch but I haven't done it as much.

I've actually kind of dive into streaming on YouTube, which has been fun. We've had Community smash nights and stuff like that. But, yeah, the main, the main thing, which I'm super excited to talk about and I'm always happy to talk about because I am a firm Defender.

I guess. You'd say of Donkey Kong 64 and I mean, I would say two ends, Sport in general but Donkey Kong 64 specifically and funny enough, even though my channel is like, if you see it, you'll be like oh, that guy likes Banjo-Kazooie like yeah, for sure. Like that's my favorite of all time. But Donkey Kong 64 was the first game that I ever owned. That was mine. You know, 64 and Nintendo 64. Those were the first things I got, and I remember getting it.

You know, Chris. This morning and I had one of those stories I do it. Yeah, let's do it. I woke up. I was so pumped. You know, Santa came. I was out, I was opening up presents and there it was an N64 box, right? And so my experience before that with video games, I had, I had never played video games. I went over to a friend's house and he had well, actually his older sister had a Sega Genesis, okay, and so I played Sonic the Hedgehog.

So Sonic the Hedgehog The first video game I ever played and what a glorious first experience with the game, you know, I was just going to say hell of a starting point. Yeah. So that was my starting point was the first Sonic, the Hedgehog. And I remember just begging. I'm like, I need something like I want a video game system. I want video games. So, so Christmas morning. I get that N64 bucks and I opened it up and it is empty. And I am devastated, tears

flowing down my face. Freaking out. Well, my dad had already like, unboxed it and hooked it up. So you ready for me to play right old man? Because he knew I'd want to play it and so I pretty much just dropped everything after that. I must have opened games or something. I don't know. But then I remember I spent the entire like, what, what was I

five? Okay, so I'm coming up on 29 here so I spent the remaining like 20 was at Four years playing Nintendo 64. So they probably didn't think that gift would last me as long as it has but it was okay to be fair, there was a brief period where I actually did sell my N64 collection and immediately regretted it and started acquiring it again. Oh yeah. Oh my God, how many times you've had that discussion? Just like why did I do it? Why did I think about it all the

time? Whether it's this console or another one? I just I still have a decent amount of like Super Nintendo games but I definitely Of either misplaced or given away. Other ones that I wish I still had. And I'm just like, man, it's it's tough to get them back. It's a whole, it's a whole thing. Nowadays, it's crazy. It's absolutely worst. And honestly, like, so I just need money at the time. And I was like, why did I sell my Nintendo 64 collection? Why didn't I saw my GameCube

collection? Because I mean, I still have my game collection. I didn't sell anything else after that, but for some reason, I decided my bread and butter. My Original my Nintendo 64 and I didn't get like now like one for what I sold it for like one of the games is worth that much. You know. Yeah. Yeah. That's the killer right damn. But I am happy to report. I have acquired most of my collection back amazing. That's good.

Yeah, that's funny. And that games that I never had, you know, like I never had Pokemon Stadium and I played it, but I never owned it and I have I have one and to do. I play them. No. I mean, not really you have? And I had to have the key with the key with stadium is you have to have to, like, transfer your Gameboy collection. Essentially, I think that's a fantastic idea. I can't wait to get to those games, but but I think that like, that's a big part of it.

I remember that was part of what I was doing with friends. Is that I would bring over my Pokemon Blue which I still have and my friend who had. I think the first Stadium, I don't think I ever really played too much in the second and it was like, oh, this is Another awesome way for us to battle each other. Like, it was that, that sort of that. There's something about that Home console novelty, especially with Pokemon that you're like

this. Like, just looking at you, like whoa, they're huge, I can actually see that. Like wow, they're not just little, you know, cartoony pixels like they're giant monsters now. They're coming to life, you know. And yeah that was a thing. I remember transferring I remember at not Ending how the transfer Pak worked? I was like, why can't I just so I had a friend growing up and she had a Super Nintendo and I would go over and she had a super Game Boy Player. Yeah.

And I thought that the transfer Pak on the N64 was like the N64 that's, you know what, that makes sense. It didn't do that but evidently doesn't Pokemon Stadium. Like if you have Red or blue or yellow. You know, you can connect and play it via that game but it's like the only games you can play on your screen. Yeah. I still like I was only I would

have known that. Yeah so II tried to shove and what's really funny is when I like so that the transfer Pak is the only thing left of my original N64 collection that I like saved - a few manuals and stuff which I do here but that when I found it it had Quest for Camelot. A lot in it which is like this weird.

I don't know if it's excuse me, I don't know if it's Disney or whatever, but it's like a Legend of Zelda clone on Gameboy and I had, oh, yeah, chopped it into the transfer Pak because I was trying to figure out how to, like the last time I used it because I was trying to figure out how to play a game boy, game something. And I'm like, well, that's a little piece of my history there there. Yeah, yeah. I remember this game. I do think it's, oh, you know what it is?

I just looked up. It's a Brothers animation. That's what it is. That's pretty, looks very much. Like a Disney games, or Disney game, and movie, 100%, like Beauty and the Beast. Yeah, but animation style, which is cool, which is a cool look. Yeah, it was a great gig do not great radians, but really whatever. Who cares? Donkey Kong 64 isn't exactly a

99 across the board either. So, the crazy thing though, about that though, I feel like when it first came out, it was Yeah, so yeah, so let's let's talk a little bit about about the game to because let's get let's jump into Donkey Kong 64 because there's lots of talk about because this game, you know, I messaged you, I think it was a few days ago last week, something like that was like, man, this game is way bigger than I thought it was, and I think that?

Yeah, right. And I think at the time, because it's late 90s, because we're in this era of games, that's impressive. I mean, it's still is impressive when you look back, when you think back and go like wow, you know, They did a lot to do with the expansion pack in the console and the cartridge be able to make this a reality. But I think it would have gotten a few extra points because of how much is jammed into this game because I think stuff like that, kind of happens now. It's like, wow.

Look at all this content. Look at all this stuff that you can do like that. That's a positive. So I could see that being one of the positives at that time as well. And I do, I like that about it. So one of the one of the reasons why I wanted to make sure that I check Chatted to you about this game is because like we were mentioning with your YouTube channel. You have a lot of different sort of analysis about different games and you did one not too long ago as of this recording.

Anyway, that you basically went through the entire game and analyzed all the different stages and the characters and the weapons. And some of the secrets and sort of the idea of the game itself, obviously you have a lot of love for this game. You said right off the top of your Defender, you're a lover of this game. What stands out to you? Let's start there. Okay, well, first off, I just want to say Donkey Kong. 64 is the reason I started my YouTube channel.

I don't think I've finished my thought earlier. I just kind of went on a tangent about Christmas or something stories are good man. Stories are why we're here. But yeah, exactly. But I see this game. Get kind of crucified online and I was like, you know, like screw people. I like this game. It's good. And I'm going to tell you why it's good. And then my mindset, It was like well how am I going to tell them?

It's good. I was like I know what I will look at every single element of this game from start to finish and I will tell them why it's good and I will review every single level piece by piece you know and you did man united and I did. So and now I'm you know, now I'm like I don't know how many games strong in the analyzing series which is way more in-depth than you think but Yeah. Well like I said that the Donkey Kong one alone is just under an hour. I was, I was like, oh man, it's

an hour. What is he going to talk about? And then I started playing the game thinking and going. Oh no. There's lots of there's lots here now. I get it. Yeah, I think game is filled with stuff and I think there's a few things, I would probably separate, and one of those kind of ties back to. So, obviously rare made the game. Yeah, and rare has their charm their style, which I would kind of describe as like a car.

Tunis. It's the same look that banjo has and Conquer has, you know, they have this cartoony over the top like characters aren't afraid to fart or burp or you know, it's got just a really silly atmosphere and I love that it's playlist. It's playful its playful. It doesn't take itself seriously at all. Yeah, but ironically this this game that I think sets it apart a little bit among the other ones too. The atmosphere is actually really creepy like, oh yeah,

time he definitely has. Yeah and, you know, part of that is just the insane lighting techniques that they did in this game. Mmm. So I would say that's a big factor and then the other factor I would say is the fact that, you know, it were coming off the heels of Donkey Kong Country. You know where they did this? Unprecedented at the Time, 3D models, like lower res down into like these, you know, Sprites on the screen but it gave it such a

unique. Look. Yeah, and just recapturing like I know there's a whole thing and the development where, you know, they were originally making this like a 2-D game. Yeah, to point the whole thing, it was going to start. Yeah. Start as kind of like I would say when I was reading up about that, it's kind of like what Tropical Freeze is a little bit where it's still too deep, but it has 3D elements.

I think that's what sounds like that's where they're has like, at whether it's capable or not at the time, is a whole other thing. But it sounds like that's the direction they were. At least thinking they were going to go initially. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's so as for the technical technical players to be a 2.5 D. Yes. Yeah. And that's the route they were going before. They're just like, you know what, this this isn't going to

work, it's not going to look. Look anything like, you know, anything like Donkey Kong Country. It's not going to be as groundbreaking as that. And so they brought in a guy from the banjo team and I think that really like kind of combined, the elements of Donkey Kong Country that gives it that unique look, but then also kind of banjo fying it and adding that cartoony rare charm that I just absolutely adore. Yeah, yeah. That I mean to me that's, that's the biggest thing and A few

other things that set it apart. I think the gameplay, I love having the five different Kong's, and that they have different moves. I think that's really cool. Obviously, there's ways that they could have done that better, but looking at them all, they're all distinct and they all have different kind of feels to them. Yeah. Yeah. Do you have based on there? Whether it's their weapons, which I have mixed feelings about or their abilities or just the way they look and sound are there?

Is there a standout who's your favorite? You have a favorite or is it to do? You have a favorite MIT? Do you have a favourite child? It did idiots, daddy, my favorite. This is one thing I actually say in my video because so as a kid I like them all, like, don't get me wrong, I didn't dislike anyone in particular, right. My least favorite was lanky, which is probably a shock to everyone because I feel like that's everyone's favorite nowadays.

I don't know these sort of like the goofy one, you know? Like he's the, I don't know. I don't know if he's like the nerd, you know, of the group that sort of idea, like there's something about about him. That that sort of has this place that he's traveled here, Drazen is that weird question that comes to the holiday dinner and you Like, you know, trying to cover your food because you don't want them to because he spits when he talks, you know. And he was like I like I like

yeah. I could definitely see it. Yeah. So I think they're like tiny and chunkier very 90s like you're the most 90s characters out of the bunch for sure chunky. Especially I think, I mean tiny does have the Rasta hat but tiny was my second favorite. But I would never tell anyone that because, you know, I was, I was a boy and I was young and elderly. But, but yeah, did he for sure? Because you look at the guy they

packed him with with fun stuff. Not only did he do fun flips when he jumped, which was a big thing. Oh, this is important. This game gave me like, you know, how will you play a game? Like, Zelda is a great example of this and you just constantly are rolling when you're running. Oh yeah. Like you just tap roll excessively, right? So did he had this very specific and they all can kind of do a variation of this. But did he was my One where I could press B.

He does a little cartwheel. I could jump with a and then I could do a Tail Spin Attack so I can. Yeah that's sort of like a like a run. Like a sort of a cartwheel jump running combo thing to kind of get you around. Yeah, I think I called it my first compulsive form of movement in a video game and it's true, it's what I did. The what was it the cartwheel to jump to tailspin combo? That's what I got. It Yeah. And you know, they all had a variation of it, but his was the best.

Just well I think he has like this this like sort of hop to his cartwheel. To like there's sort of like this really smooth movement which you may not expect from sort of a semi early 3D type of a game like this. But they did a really good job of like really getting the movement down with them and they all feel distinct when they do and I think you're right. I think that definitely Lends to the variety and the different choices.

And not, you know, getting bored by playing five of the same or three of the same character. They all do feel different and and Diddy's is, I've always liked it a lot because For Me Donkey Kong Country 2. That's day is still my favorite game of all time. So I have like this actually. Yeah, absolutely love it. I think it's just it's so you had your story about your 64 and Christmas. That was a game that I got for Christmas in 94 93 or something.

So that was like, yeah. So and I still have the original cartridge. I love the original 3 Series that one, especially so there's always this thing about like him and his guitar and him flipping his hat backwards and stuff. And that game, and Dixie is sort of a character that just needs to be around more. So yeah, it was what. Yeah, I mean that's a whole other connection between Dixie and Tiny though. I think I believe Tiny's

technically her sister. Yeah. And she has the Are ya, which is that? Begs the same room? Why didn't they just use Dixie? That is exactly. So I went into this game. Not really remembering everyone's name, obviously, Donkey Kong, and Diddy. I knew and cranky like those, the ones from the other games, like, whatever I recognized him, right? But it's been a while since I've played any of the more recent games.

Like, Tropical Freeze has been a while since I think it's probably since it came out the last time I played it but I've always gone back to those original ones and a lot of these characters in this one. Alright, They're just cameos or they're not in those original 3 at all. So, I was like, wait a second, is this a young Dixie? And I didn't even remember that. No, it's tiny, but that's fine. It's all good. I got excited. I was like is Dixie in this. All I got and she was not but

that's okay. Yeah. I mean dicks you know, Dixie's the original but tiny does a good job. I would never like confuse the two and I know I really like tiny like someone Even though I played I did play Donkey Kong Country 2. Yeah, just a little bit after but my well actually, no, that's not true. I played it a little bit before it because my cousin had it but I never, I never thought they were the same. I never had that. You know, I was always like, oh yeah, I love tiny.

I was like, yeah, Dixie school too. But I love tiny. Yeah. Because that was, that was like, mine. I think. I don't know if it's because I think I spent a little bit more time playing this.

Like now, in the first, I would say half of the game because I was still trying to figure out, you know, exactly how the game works, or remember how it worked and how are, you know, the controls are the, the, you know, the pads to transport you from place to place all the little aspects of it and how everyone's abilities worked. And, you know, you have to

backtrack a lot and everything. So I actually before I really got moving on this game and really made it further into later worlds and stages and stuff. I spent a lot of time Playing as Tiny because she uses her abilities and you need her a lot in that first half of the game, I would say and she ended up being my favorite one. When I was playing this, I just I like your sort of her style or

personality. I like the, you know, being able to sort the double jump is, you know, you can float in the air just like Dixie. Does always find that helpful sort of corrects, my shitty jumping. So that was always nice. Yeah. Definitely the most versatile. Yeah. I think, I think so. Yeah.

And yeah, yeah. Ended up being top of my list and I was thinking it was going to be Diddy and you know you know depends on your feelings of it because he's your but man his his his jetpack I can't remember the name of it off. Top my head I had such a hard time controlling it. Sometimes I was like I want to love this but I just don't. Yeah okay I like the idea. I think the idea is great it's just It's the control that just did not always jail with me

every once in a while. I was like, I had a good run. Yeah. I had a good, you know, from A to B sort of thing or you go through some of the Rings and some of the challenges like oh this is great. Most of the time though. I was struggling fair enough. I think that's really interesting because I, when I went back to play this game again, I was wondering what would kind of not feel good to me? Yeah and I played through it and honestly, I didn't have an

issue. I thought the jetpack was going to be an issue, but it really wasn't and but keep in mind. I did not go back and play this 100%. I already did that once in my life, I didn't really need to do it again. I didn't feel compelled to do it on this playthrough. Sure. So maybe I kind of skipped over some of the challenges that required it more but personally I found it. The cool thing about it is you can explore. Yeah, right. Yeah, you can fly up to places

that normally you couldn't. Um, whether they capitalized on that or not only sometimes, maybe yeah. But yeah, it was a cool idea. It is, it is a very cool. I mean, they have that's the thing about this game whether it is the first world that you end up going back multiple times to

or the third or the fourth one. There's a lot of good ideas and, you know, early games, regardless of, it's a 64 game or if it's Super Nintendo or early GameCube even, you know, original PlayStations, early place, it doesn't matter. Like there's always Ways, a lot of good ideas in games like a plague lover recently for the show, and so many sick. Yeah, I mean, that's what we thought until we played it. And then we're like, okay, that's that was what.

That was one where we we constantly said, for the entire time, we were talking about it. Myself and Jared from the play along podcast, was that like There's so many good ideas in this game, but none of them, except for maybe a couple, small ones really come together and here they have a lot of really good ideas in multiple characters. And I would say, the vast majority of them do come together. And I was surprised by that. I honestly thought that I was going to have a hard time with

most of these. The way that this was structured and I was surprised. It was like okay they're got used to the controls, are all this person does this Kong, does this? This Congress I was once I Sort of got used to the difference between controlling them into D to a 3D plane. I was like, okay I'm good, I got

this. Yes, so much experience of the banjo series that I'm just like, okay, let's you know, you press your press Z or Zed and a and they do a different jump, you press the same button and B and they do something else. You press that and up. See and you need to do something to like all of that sort of just made sense to me. It's basically like the fundamental game play of the game. You use the normal face buttons,

right? And then you can use the normal face buttons, plus Z, and it does something different. So, gives you kind of a really large arsenal of some things that are more like, like the guns like. Yeah, I want to take quote, the guns. Yeah, I was about to disposal to mention the guns, like it's cool

that that there's variety there. Like you said to Arsenal is fairly robust, I would say and that adds to all these different types of like elements and gameplay things that they can do. But the guns are just like I the only reason why I don't like him as because I don't know why the they have guns and that like that the it's sort of like, I know like you mentioned earlier and I agree with you that this is just having fun doesn't take itself too.

Seriously, there's a lot of ways that you can point to that for this game and other rare games that are like this, but like that part of it still, even though it's not taken. So seriously, is like world breaking to me and I Don't understand why they did it. I mean I other than just like, instead of finding the key, you could shoot that little icon on the wall. I'm like, okay, I guess or you know, to break that balloon and okay, I don't know, I didn't. Yeah, it's so it's kind of funny.

I don't know if you know much about the story of so it's a little less about why they have guns. But more about why the guns, look how they look. Do tell. So so rare, they were just making the game and they decided to give Donkey Kong a gun and while they gave him all guns obviously, and they were kind of right off the heels of GoldenEye. Also, that was just kind of. I'm assuming that's where the idea came from. They're like, oh, we had success with the guns. We should do guns.

That'd be fun. Especially if we make like a multiplayer mode like I'm sure that's where their head was at. Yeah. And so they initially had Shigeru Miyamoto in, who's obviously the creator of Donkey Kong Mario, for those who don't know, and he played Donkey, Kong 64 a little bit, the build they had and he was, he was noticeably happy about it. And then Donkey Kong pulled out a shotgun like a realistic shotgun.

And then his face just went like, it's sunk and they were all just terrified and oh, but you're all fired. Yeah. And they're like oh gosh, was that too much and so he He pulled out a piece of paper and a pen and just like Drew out the coconut gun as is and he was like, make it look like this. And they're like, okay, that makes a lot of sense would do that. Like you know what? Like that part of it. I like how everyone kind of has their own one, you know. The coconut God. Yeah.

The fruit and it like all that makes it the feathers which low? Yeah, I guess they're not all fruit. Yeah, that's right. Or no. If I don't know if like Kazooie is hanging out with her somewhere and she's like just picking feathers off because to me that's a first thing I thought of It's because it was feathers like that's what it was. What's really crazy? I have never thought about that but we really owe me immediately immediately.

That's what I thought of because I was just like because in that gives in Banjo-Kazooie you're collecting the feathers even as yes items, right? You need them to fly and everything. So it's like oh is this is the is the Donkey Kong World on top of the Banjo, Kazooie world. And there just happens way you like feathers around.

This is, this is the thing. This is a thing and there is like a fan-made Map, all of these rare games live in like one big universe and they're all just islands in the world. You can tiles. You have conquer like Windy Hill. You have banjos, I lo hags. And like, they're all mapped out. Yes, it's amazing. And I'm a firm believer that this is a thing. Oh, now, yeah, is, is that conquer have his bad foot? Also in the same universe. Yes, yes it is. Oh, man, that's amazing.

So, so yeah, so maybe maybe conquer in one of his other bad days. Got into a fight with Kazooie, the feathers came over to the Donkey Kong islands and those others are there to pick up and use as Weaponry.

I briefly mentioned. So I just said, how they're how they're all connected and I just realized like I'm like, wow, I didn't talk about the connecting factor, which Which is Diddy Kong Racing Diddy Kong Racing in the manual for Diddy Kong Racing. It actually says, did he is asked by Timber, the tiger to come to his Island Timber Island. So Timber the Tigers, the actual like main character did, he's the main character? Yeah. Right.

And he asked Daddy for help to defeat wizpig and on Diddy's way he goes through where conquer lives and he goes, where banjo lives. And he asks them if they want to come along And that's like cannon in the manual says that it can't be any more clear than that, right? Like he's stopping by. He's doing, he's doing a drive-by Poppins and hey, buddy, want to come help. Yeah. Oh man 100%, it's got to be. Yep, this is great. I love it.

I think maybe this is just another, maybe I am and I'm sure I'm not the only one who thought of it, but maybe I found a little little little loophole. Lash Easter egg that that they threw in there for that reason. Another one of the probably couple of reasons or ways in this game that they're like, yes, this is all connected. No, there's always Peg and maybe Timbers not in it, which, by the way, where the heck is that guy? Let's bring him back, you know, like that.

That's it right there. It's all. It's all connected, man. It's okay. It is very interesting, like not to digress too much from Donkey Kong, but if you look in Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie tipped up the turtles in those games, Yeah, then both Choice. Yeah, well I played him a lot when I had Diddy Kong Racing when I was younger was because I knew he was in those games of like, this is great, I love it. Yeah, it's pretty cool. How they're all connected. Yeah, it's amazing.

Okay, so, okay there's some justification for the, for the weapons and all that. Now, that's less justification, more just like Yeah, they're there. And they but you know they kind of fix them because initially they were realistic which is just bizarre. Yeah. That that does not does not gel.

Well, I would I would imagine that wouldn't go over well and I don't think that would go over well playing it either and whether you're a kid or whether we're playing it now and when were older I just like it would just feel weird to have like you know, the two pistols. Did he pulling out two pistols from his back pocket? Like I just know. I don't, I don't think, I think did He was originally intended to have a shotgun 20g. No, it doesn't.

Even if they were real guns. Why would you do that? He's the quick quippy. You know. Right, right. Open around like, no, you gotta give him something. He's gonna have awesome. Jeez, it's got exactly, yeah, exactly, I gotta get the sound effect. Just steal the sound effect from GoldenEye. People would love that. And the other thing is, I think early when we first started talking, we mentioned how this game kind of gets a little bit of a bad rap in some ways. We'll talk about the rest.

Is that code? It was I was going to tell I was going to mention something else, but we'll get to the rap in just a sec. I think guys. I think one of the reasons why this game and I think this is fairly evident and and I mixed about this as well is that there is just so much to collect in this game and that is not just, you know, certain areas or certain characters. It's just you have to go back backtracking. Don't really bother me. I really like Metroid games.

You know, that kind of stuff is totally fine with me in this sort of a similar idea to that. Whereas like you can't unlock certain areas or do certain things. They have certain abilities or characters feels very much like a metroidvania type game and like that which is really cool. But for me and I think this is some of the criticism that the game that Donkey Kong 64 gets is that there's just a little too much stuff that you need to get. It's just a little too

overloaded sure go back. And and use the other Kong's to go to other areas. But I really after, I went back to even just like the second or third stage for, like, the fourth time, I was like, okay, I don't need to have to do this

for every character. Like I kind of wish that the first stage was just Diddy and Donkey Kong the second, maybe some tiny, you know, the third, maybe just all three of them, like, I wish they'd sort of didn't make you backtrack as much to collect as much, which eat with Each character because you almost have to have to go back to the first stage with chunky, and I just got it was done, I thought I was done with

that, you know. And it kind of It kind of felt like a little bit too much even though I had a fine time playing as him, I don't know. I don't know how you feel about that stuff. Okay, well, in my video I say something along the lines of I don't care. I love Collectibles. And I think, I think the real problem, I I don't necessarily think it's collectibles in general. I think it's a few select Collectibles that they should have.

The main thing is the colored been in us like roles are spread out through the whole level for every character. Yeah. And it's just very inconvenient when you have to go to the same, you know, if it was a Area. That tiny went into. Then you be like, okay, then I collect tiny banana. Yes, but it's like there's a specific area for tiny to go to once you go in all of a sudden you see lanky bananas and you're like, why is this here? And then you have to go back unnecessarily for no reason.

Just to get those bananas. If you want to 100% what, you don't have two hundred percent, okay? For those of you out there that think, oh, there's too many Collectibles, you don't have to collect them all. No, that's true. That's true. You don't you? It's just It's more of an OCD thing. Yeah, man.

That's what happened. Like, even I don't remember the name of the stage, the, the, with the shipwreck in the water and everything, like I found like the swimming in The Galleon. Yeah, that's it. Yeah, it's always Galleon. Gal, always liked the word that's been used in these Nintendo games and stuff. I didn't mind like, swimming around in this and stuff. I think it controls pretty well, just like it does in the banjo

games I think. But I was like I got that OCD feeling like you just mentioned it was like oh I got a swim over there and You know, I got to do all this but then I was like, oh now I'm not enjoying the swimming, as much as I keep going. Back to the same dark little corner In The Water and I'm just like, do I need those five, you know, purple bananas that, that I didn't grab with tiny.

I mean, like you said, no. But I don't know that while I'm playing it because I'm, I know that I need those bananas to get to the boss levels. And yeah, I like the boss levels. I like them so much. I thought they were great. So I was determined Ermine to get those bananas? Yeah, yeah, for sure. I think that there is a certain requirement of how many bananas you have to collect because you have to get banana medals. I don't know what that requirement is off.

The top of my head. Evidently it can actually soft lock your game. If you don't get enough to get the proper banana, medals that you have to get at the, at the end game, there's these giant banana Metals. You have to collect, but you can only get them. I don't know. Is something weird like that, and it can cause a problem, which is a circle. I think it's every every I want to say it's every Don't know exactly. I should have written that down.

It should have. But yeah, something like that. Yeah, some of them. So, whatever. But I think Gloomy Galleon is a special case in my analysis, I found Gloomy Galleon to be the worst level in the entire game, and I for those who watch my content, and if you start watching my content, you'll realize I do not like swimming levels, and it's always been that way. I think, especially in platformer, Whirs.

It's kind of atrocious that it's okay to have swimming in the level but I think level specifically designed around swimming, you need to be fast. Yeah, be able to move and I will say that Donkey Kong 64. You do move pretty quick and they don't limit you with things like breathing. Yes, yes. That's Ross. Atrocious thing ever. Yeah, well, you can't with how big that world is honestly like you just right. You have to go see if the spend so much time.

The water that honestly, it would do, it would really downgrade the game. I think if you had to worry about breath especially now in that area. Yeah, yeah. It's you know it's bad. I think the only swimming level I've remotely enjoyed as probably Banjo-Tooie Atlantis which we also do not have to worry about breathing but I'd still rather just be on the ground. Yeah, and because like you mentioned earlier these these Kong's is characters, they all

move pretty well. Well, and if you're using some of the ones that you enjoy the traversal with more, why would you want to take that away? So I yeah, I could see that. I yeah, I didn't like I didn't love it, but I think I keep going back to thinking about that one because I do like the World building in it. I think it's kind of cool that you go to a lot of different types of underwater areas and I,

I really, I, I liked you. You mentioned Diddy Kong Racing, but I liked fighting the boss in that one because it's the giant puffer fish, and it felt like You were you were doing a Diddy Kong Racing level. I think that's what they were. I think that's what they're going for because you're on like a hoverboard, it's not easy but because and sort of like you know top down view instead of behind your character like it isn't a racing game but I was like I think this is what

they're doing here. I think this is a little Diddy Kong Racing action and and I love it because I love that game. It's like one of my favorite racing games of all time. So I to this day will say that it is better than Mario Kart 64. But oh, yeah, for sure. Oh yes, thank you know, yes, 100%. Ya know. It's not even comparison. I think. I think Mario Kart 64 is fine. I think Diddy Kong Racing is the definitive Kart Racer on the 64. Yes, I do. I'm also, I'm not crazy.

I know I'm not crazy. I know you're not, you're not. I do also really like Mickey Speedway USA which is another rare game I had that or some version of that, I don't know if it was the exact same title for Gameboy Color and it was a really good Game Boy Color game as well, but I haven't played the 64 run so I'm excited to give that a shot. Yeah. Yeah, the 64 one. It's it's You know, it's a Kart Racer. It's pretty it's pretty standard. It's I would still say it's better than Mario Kart.

Actually. I like can still, I don't know, it's just more, it's more fleshed out. It came out at the end of the n64's life. So the graphics are like better to nice that helps that helps. Yeah, one thing I also wanted to say, yes, touching the I think I can't confirm this, but they look very similar and I think the boss and Gloomy Galleon, Maybe The same as an enemy and Banjo-Tooie nice. It might be further connection because they definitely both have.

Like it's a puffer fish and their pufferfish enemies in Atlantis. That look very, very similar. Exactly the same. I can't confirm that but just my little Theory there. Yeah, I'm looking at, I'm looking at the at them. There's two different colors. As one. That's more. Purple one, that's more like orange. Yellowish, which is very similar to the one that is in this game. So yeah. I could see that the motto. Here we go. Here's a little bit. This is just from from a random like Wiki.

So, you know, take that for what it is. But the models used for the swell bellies in in the banjo Series, where recycled from the puff tops, which is what it's called in Donkey Kong 64. So there you go, their goals. Whether it is exactly the same or whether it's just sort of recycled assets, which, you know, happens. I think you're onto something. There you go. Man, another little old man. Recycle speaking of Recycled assets, let's do it. Donkey Kong 64.

I am not 100% sure. How many levels are regurgitated, from banjo levels. That didn't happen. But there's a couple, I know click clock Woods, for sure. Yeah, that was a good. See that? Yeah. That was originally a banjo level and it does have kind of a different vibe than any other levels, which I think is very interesting. I liked it, I liked that one. That was one of a kind of the

ones and I definitely felt. I mean a lot of this game does feel like the banjo games, but but I did feel even while playing it without knowing that that was that was the case. It was like oh yeah this I could see this this being a banjo. I mean there's there's forest and Greenery like levels and the banjo series all over the place. But but this one, this one felt a little bit different. I think you're right. That's a good point. Yeah, cuz I like even the music

kind of had a similar thing. I mean, the music in general. General is amazing. Grant kirkhope Donkey Kong music is always Top Notch. I talk. So I've I've message Grant kirkhope a few times. He likes kind of my, my comments, I guess. And he actually responds. One of the things that was like so he recently pressed a vinyl of Banjo Kazooie, he revamped the soundtrack and made a made an album called Vijay keyed,

which is a super cool. And I was like, when are we getting the Donkey Kong 64 soundtrack? Press to a vinyl and not only that but the the rejig Eid one which I did order is like they pressed it to look like Pads from the game so you can get like the spring pad or the band is like super cool. And I'm like the like the next thing is like they should either get the number pads from Donkey Kong or even better. The the face of the Kong pads?

Like yeah. If you could pick which ones you wanted or if there was like two or three vinyls off that'd be amazing. Yeah. Or colored bananas either way, I don't know. Yeah. Just think a lot of cool ideas here. Yeah there's lots of variety that's for sure. Yeah. Yeah the music in this in Donkey Kong is awesome.

Again one of the reasons why I really appreciate Donkey Kong the Conquering series on the Super Nintendo even more now because I could go back and listen to it me like Wow, they really like they went for it and it co Yas and it does here too. I just think that like there's something about when you're spending hours and hours in one world and a game like this that some of the music loses its Allure.

I think it's doesn't feel as special because you're not doing one or two levels that take you 15 minutes or 20 minutes like they do in the other in the, you know, original games that here the They last longer, they're more, the repeated more, and that's just because of time, and that's just because of what they can fit on the cartridge. So it's still very good. But, you know, I don't think it has the same Top Notch Al, or at

least at times, not always. But at times, yeah, we kind of like, it kind of Fades into the background a little bit more than it does in the original Three games that came before this and that's fine. It is what it is. But of course, there is the rap and the rap. That is what everyone thinks of I think when they think of this era of Donkey Kong and this game specifically. Oh yeah, for sure, they have to do right before we transition to

the rap. I just want to like point out the fact that in these levels and this is something rare, just does across the board with their music, I just absolutely adore it. It's such a cool effect, not a lot of games do this, I don't know, maybe it's more popular now, but at the time, they definitely didn't do it. But like things like you'll be running.

Land. And then you go underwater and the music transitions to different instrumentation to give you a feel of being under water or in the air or you know what I mean things and Echo differently or there's like a different sort of. Yeah it just feels different even though it's sound. You know what I mean? Yes, it's very interesting and I think that's just a rare thing. Yeah, you know. Yeah, absolutely. They do it. I agree.

Well, it's awesome. And yes, those things were like, unless you think about it, you don't know. To sit, but you do notice it. When you're playing like, it's like a subconscious thing, right? It's there and, you know, you enjoy it, but you're not sitting there jumping underwater and going, oh, wow, that was amazing. Music transition. But then you realize that as you still, subconsciously are aware of it and they do it in a really great way. So that's it's a good point it, that's good.

I didn't want to miss that because that's definitely something I felt when I was playing the game, for sure. Yeah, it's one of those things sessions. It's just, it's a nice little touch and not everybody would probably notice it but it is. It does make an Like if you didn't have it, you'd be like, oh okay, yeah, it's part. It's part of that atmosphere that you were you were discussing a while ago to about with the game. It's just like some areas are more creepy than others.

It's not just because the lights are darker or because the enemies look different, it's because of the sound design and the music for sure. They build everything up to give the atmosphere, the best possible chance it can have, you know. Yeah, exactly. That goes a long way. Feel. It's really cool. But nothing captures feels like the DK rap. Raising just take this shoe. All right, what are your feelings on this? I know, you know, everyone, you know, correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm pretty sure. Everyone thinks it's pretty goofy, but it's supposed to be, but come on, it's it's not good, right? Right layer, it's hilarious. I love it. Aye aye. Yeah, I don't care. What anyone thinks I will always love this. I remember So I have a very specific memory of the DK rap and this is like, definitive childhood moment, right? Amazing and I actually did tweak this to Grant kirkhope and he responded.

He was like wow that's unbelievable and I'm like I know but I just wanted you to know right away my believable. I promise I know I as this as this is like the DK rap is becoming a Hot Topic because Seth Rogen Made a video about it or whatever for the Mario Bros movie. Like the DK rap is skyrocketing and I'm like, Grant you ride that wave because this, it was in my childhood. It was like the best thing ever. I had it memorized. I still probably do have it memorized.

I don't know, but I remember I won't say that and not and not give us a rendition like come on. Oh gosh, just kidding. I'm just kidding or hate my Donkey Kong. Okay. Well then I went to look at that golf clap. Well done. I went to a restaurant and there were these kids just in the back. Like so for some reason, this restaurant was just riddled with kids. I don't know. Maybe restaurants are normally riddled with kids but I was just like hyper aware that it was filled with kids.

Sure. So these kids in the back, they like all started like singing, the DK rap. And it was like, totally random, and not quietly like loud, like they were like, screaming it, good for them. And then I started screaming it from across the room and there was like all the kids were coming out of the woodwork, like all the kids that know, the DK rap we all knew it, and we were all screaming it and the restaurant was filled with pure Donkey Kong Joy. Oh my God.

Yeah, it was a real thing. True story, totally random. It's like a A super nerdy unplanned, flash mob that's what that is exactly. It was the 90s baby I don't know what to tell you. That's exactly how it should be. That's how all of this stuff should be happening. That's amazing. I know. Right? It's that. So so it's it to me, it is, you know I think it's I don't know if it's production, I don't know if it's the words.

I don't know what it is. It's like, it's it's not good, but it's also fun and it's not like so bad that it's good. I don't think it's to that point. I just think that it is missing some sort of like I don't know what it is, is like a beat Miss in there. I don't even know what the word is but it's still so much fun that I didn't care and it is way longer than I thought it was. I honestly remember this thing being a minute minute and a half or something like that. This thing just Hose.

It is a full-fledged corny rap song. It is so 90s even though it's late, late late, 90s. It's like, this feels like this came from 1992, and I love that. That's how they start this game is. It's giving you an idea of how much fun you're going to have with these crazy characters and this crazy premise and just go for it and that's it. And yep, and don't forget, don't forget, chunky is in a disco outfit at the beach.

Evening. So you get a little bit into the 70s to that's kind of covers a few decades there. It's amazing. I do like the sort of like I guess you could call it slapstick with the sort of like goofy humor of him. Like, not realizing that he needs to change and he scoots off screen and has to change and everything. I like that. But at the same time, I kind of wish he just wore that outfit all the time. Yeah. I wish it was an option. Yeah. Yeah. I just like unlockable or

something like that. I love when he Smacks. Linkie off the screen. Oh yeah, laughs, like to this day, like, when I was re watching it, I laughed pretty hard because I forgot about it, and he just turns a nice Max. I mean, he like holds his face. He's like, oh no. What have I done? No, no. But the thing about this rap that regardless of how you feel about the song, which it's I mean, it's just it's silly but it establishes each one of these characters personalities without

you having to play the game. Yeah. In a very Brief amount of time even the DK rap as you're listening to it. The instrumentation changes between the Kong's. Yeah. So with Donkey Kong you get the more, you know, Bongos oriented kind of stuff data, you get the straight up electric guitar, you know, tiny saxophone, lanky trombone, and then chunky triangle, I think. Yeah, the triangle. But I think they actually gave him kind of a heavier. Yeah. Because he's because he's big

and everything. Yeah. Exactly. But yeah, but it's It's awesome. Yeah, it's kind of I think they were they didn't want to show that they gave him a triangle until later in the game. I think that was Petit. Jake to make you laugh at him to get some big weapon like he's got. He's got the Bazooka the pineapple bazooka think. Yeah and then his instrument is the triangle. It's like the most delicate thing and he stands on his tippy-toes and plays it like it's so funny.

I love that kind of playful childish humor in a game that largely I think is not Necessarily like built for like, let's say, an 8 year old or 10 year old to play because there's so much going on here, even though, like you said that's kind of when you started playing it and everything. But like I think there's so much going on in this game that it's I think I would, I didn't own this game, and I know a friend

of mine did. I don't know how at the time you, maybe you did, but I don't have the time if I could have played this same game for hours and hours, and hours, and hours, and just like, you know, it's not complex to the point where you can't understand. You need to do but it's complex to the point where there's a lot going on but then they just pepper in all these fun playful things like this big huge Kong

with a triangle. I love that kind of humor and how it's played in an environment like this. I think it just goes such a long way to be like, yeah, this game is full of Personality, we're having fun and we just want you to. And that's exactly what the rap does. Like you said, yeah, I will say though that because you briefly mentioned, Mentioned it. I did not officially beat this game until I was like 13, okay, there and Okay, the reason being and I'm just this is this is

like again. I'm an avid defender of Donkey Kong 64 and I always will be except for this one thing. Whoo, here we go. And here's the thing. So it is not clear. About acquiring the Nintendo coin and the rare coin at the end of the game, it says you need a Nintendo coin and you need a rare coin. So the rare coin you get, which it does tell you by talking to cranky, what is cranky, do he? Lets you play rares Jet pet

game. So you play the jetpack game and if you get us high enough score, you get the rare coin. Boom, there's one coin. You don't tell you how to get the other one. I didn't know that because I didn't get to the end in this time because I just didn't have time to but they do not tell you how to get the other coin. So what do you do? You work off the information you have especially as a kid without internet with you know, maybe there's Game Informer or magazines or whatever?

Yeah, I can get, I'm at a g guide but I wasn't a strategy guide kid. Yeah, I never did that either. No, and so I played that jetpack game as like forever forever. So that's what that's why you were okay with it because because you like perfected your action in the sky with Diddy. Yes. And I'm like what the crap why am I not getting this coin? And only to find out later that to get the coin? You have to go into Frantic

Factory, okay? I have to go to the Donkey Kong arcade game as Donkey Kong. You play the game and then we, I don't remember. You get a specific score. You beat us. Certain amount of levels, and then it gives you the Nintendo coin, so you have to play to Retro games but then they never make that clear.

So for like, however, many years, I don't know, six years, five years, I just didn't know how to beat the game and I was, but I had collected everything and and then what our glorious day, it was when I finally did it and I got that final boss fight, that is The best boss in the game.

Honestly, is it okay? I didn't experience because as a can I definitely didn't play it and this time I just didn't get to the end because it just it just took too much time and I definitely would not have known that. It would have looked it up at this point because apparently unit exists now but still that's a thing. Yeah it's definitely like there was no way to know and it was very time. It's very frustrating. Yeah. But It's so satisfying.

Once you do it, it's like oh my gosh because that all worth it. Yeah, that the end of the game is amazing. And I recently actually learned because I don't remember, like, when I beat the game, I definitely had every item. I definitely had every banana Fairy like I had, I played it to the 101 percent completion, or whatever it was, wow, but I didn't know that it gave you a special ending.

So if you collect everything in the game, which is a feat, there's like three thousand something Collectibles. Yep, you collect everything, you get the special ending and I don't know what it is and I'm curious to look it up. I probably got it. I just don't remember. Don't want, you wouldn't know at the time that that was you probably wouldn't know at the time. That that was the special ending and I Rican during it. I replayed the game but I did not 100% it this time.

So, I don't mean, I don't know what it is. I'd like, what's different about it. What's the different ending? I'm so curious. Well, it's something. We're going to have to explore outside of this episode is 100% something. I'm gonna look up now because I didn't realize I didn't see that point was looking up some of the history of the game and

everything. I didn't realize that there was, I mean, that's the other thing I know the expansion pack is, you know, boxed in with this, with this game because it's needed and everything. But like, man, there's still like that. That is another example of why, how much is in this game options? Variety. Backtracking different characters. You know all this stuff this game is huge and I do, you know why they put the expansion pack

in with the same. I mean honestly when it comes down to it, the cartridges do not hold enough information and can't run everything. That's the initial assumption. Anyways, so honestly the game was running without the expansion pack right and Endo wanted to push this accessory. And what better way to do it than with one of their Flagship titles. It was literally Nintendo brought the expansion back to the table and was like, can you guys find a way to use this in your game?

Because we want to, we want to sell it with it, That's it. This game. Yeah, totally run an N64 Hardware without it. However, they did find a use for it. There was this thing online that was like, oh yeah, there was a game breaking bugs that needed the expansion pack. That's, that's not true. That's the thing that I saw. Yeah, that's the thing that I saw and then I didn't see. And then I saw someone, I can remember the name off top of my head.

I want to say Stephenson might have been the lot the name Mark Stevenson. Yep, that's it. Yeah, and I did what I did, see that That was not the reason why. So it's like, okay, and anyways, go ahead. Yeah, yeah, that's all it was. Yeah, that wasn't the reason why Nintendo just wanted to sell something and that's why they bundled it in. And so they just used it to enhance the lighting that was

well. And you know what, though, the lighting I did notice that, you know, whether it's like a little lens flare thing. When you're looking off into the distance and whether it's the difference between going underwater and above or going into certain caves or, you know, oh, it's great. It is That's really good.

Yeah, it looks good and look, I mean, this game is not a terrible looking game, I don't think but it's definitely not but at the lighting seems to be better than what the rest of the game looks like. But that's okay because I think it creates a better atmosphere that makes the game more. Enjoyable my opinion. So, oh yeah, for sure. And I think a lot of the, you know, the models and the textures, everything has a lot of tender loving care.

And yeah. Arm to it and it yeah, it's still It looks pretty decent, you know if it was like if you played it on something like the Wii U virtual console and it's up rest so it's just clean, you know, a clean signal. It still looks pretty good absolutely even now it's still

looks good. You know I played it on the console, I played it with with the cartridge and stuff like you know again it's from 1999 it's on the 64 you know you're only going to get so far with it in or whatever as far as Fidelity goes and Graphics but that's okay. And I you know, Looks good looks just as good as the rest of the games that are like this, and it's slightly later in the life

cycle of the console. And I overall, I will say, sir, I wanted to play this game and then I, you know, reach out to you. And, and we talked about playing it and I'm like, you know what? I'm excited. I love this series, I love these characters. And I've said this to other people that have been on the show, but thank you for having me replay this. I will say, oh yeah, it's it's a wonderful. Full game. It is definitely, it's got its - I don't know, I don't know what you'd say.

It's negative reputation, I guess. Mmm. And that's only because I think I said this in Banjo-Tooie in my analysis of Banjo-Tooie somebody said something about pterodactyl and being like a large empty world and it means dunk because of it. And I thought of that. Like I was thinking about that when I was replaying that game and going through pterodactyl and and I was like, what are they talking about?

I was like, yeah, it's big, but there's plenty of stuff to do and you move really fast, so it doesn't really affect anything. I was like, maybe after you acquire some things but like that's just completing a level, you know? And so it caused me to look into this thing and I think it was called the illusory. Oh gosh, I'm gonna forget what it's called. Like illusion Zuri truth effect

or something like that. Basically, it's if someone says something and then someone else confirms it, and it gets like it like forms the general opinion to the masses. Oh, yeah, it's almost like it's this thing where somebody said something and it just like somebody else carried that and somebody else carried that and it just kept going until so many people do it that everyone just starts agreeing, right?

And I think this game has that, because like I said, at the very Beginning this game initially had really good reviews and people were like this game is amazing and it's only like recently like the past 10 years that people have really do Vin. And said this game has too many Collectibles. It has too many. You know, it's bad, it's blah, blah blah. And I'm sure there were a few people that said at the beginning. But it's really perpetuated since then.

Yeah, yeah. It's and it's easier to spread that type of thought or those feelings and stuff and like you said, I'd sort of takes over your own. You know, other people? Yeah. A bunch of opinions getting thrown at you of one kind, because one links to another to another to another, whether it's on Reddit, Twitter, whatever it might be. And then it just sort of takes over me like, yeah, you know what? They got a point but honestly, like, look, you don't have to play this entire game.

If anyone is on the fence of a planet we've been we've been mostly gushing about it. I would say for the last hour, but I would say that if you're on the fence I would say play the first couple of Worlds, at least and get a taste. Of plane as a couple different characters and I think you'll I think you'll have a good time. It may not, I don't think it's a perfect game but I still had a not saying that you say it's a perfect game either and nothing really is but like it's still

well worth your time. I think and definitely not in that camp of this game is straight up bad, not even close. Now those I think I think my final verdict was 8 out of 10. Yeah, I think that's I think that's fair. Sure. I might have to keep in mind, it's it's on 64. It's dated Hardware. So you got to give it some leniency. As far as, you know, this was pushing ground in 3D platforming. This is, this is what, let's

see. We had Mario, 64. We had Banjo-Kazooie, and then we had this basically. So it's discovering, I think it does a lot of things, right? I think there's a few small tweaks, it could have made, like, unifying the banana system and just Making it a little more, a little less necessary to change to other Kong's. Sure. Sure. And and, you know, things like switches like just make it generally for each Kong, you don't have to make it.

Herbs a general Kong switch is what I meant to say rather than a specific Kang. It's just those little small tweaks that I think would have made the game better but at the same time you know it adds a lot of backtracking and for people that enjoy collectathon like this is the collectathon of collectathon genre. Yeah, against a right at the top or rare was like Hey this game is great put more collectibles in it and every time they would send it back to him.

He just kept saying it put more Collectibles or more. More more more and they're like okay and they kept doing it and I don't know other than the bananas it does like getting the golden bananas does not feel like a chore except for a few minigames. Yeah, some of the minigames. Yeah I mean this that's the thing we've been trying about

this game for an hour. There's so much stuff that we can't get to because you'd be talking just as long as this game is the minigames are hit and miss, depending what you're doing, whatever it is what it is. But you're going to sort of those types of things where You kind of expect that with games like this but yeah I think that what you're saying is true, I really enjoyed it. I'm happy. I went back to it and I'm happy to explore more rare games as a show goes on.

And yeah. Yeah. And this is this has been a lot of fun going back to it before I let you go though. Let's re remind everybody where they can find your awesome stuff online.
