Hey, fam I'm Jada Pinkett Smith. Check out this exclusive Red Table Talk bonus content. We are in a global mental health crisis. We have brought in a pioneering psychologist who literally wrote the mental health handbook, Dr Alfie Breeland Noble. Thank you, Thank you for having me. Doctor. Can you tell us what depression is? There are primarily three types of depressive illness. We talk about popolar disorder right the highs and loans. Everybody knows that. And then there's what
we call major depressive disorder. And that's the one that I think many of us think about when we think of depression, where you're not functioning almost at all. It's hard to get out of the bit, it's hard to concentrate, it's hard to focus, it's hard to engage in conversation, you're crying all the time, those kinds of things. And then there's what we call persistent depressive disorder. That's kind
of a low grade. And that's also what some people will turn pi function in depression, just the low grade all the time, just kind of down. The person who walks around with the cloud hanging over their head. But they're able to function, they're able to get out of the bed in the morning, they're able to go to work, They're able to have a conversation with you. It's not debilitating.
So when we think about high functioning depression, often what we're thinking about is someone who's almost walking around with the mask you might not necessarily know. I think there's so much high functioning depression happening, especially in this time, for sure. I remember Michelle Obama talked about walking around with a mouth depression. When you mentioned that, that's what
comes to mind for me. So people like Anthony Borden and Kate Space fall into that category, because what do we see Anthony boardin all over the world enjoying food, living life, having fun, Kate Spade running the whole business. I'm sure there's a lot of pressure to stay so the bear. Where is the room when they have a child? Where is the room to ab with what you're dealing with?
And there's so many of us who are struggling with it, who don't know what to do with it, who don't know how to share with people that you know, and how to express themselves. That even if you would go to your job and you still can function in relationships, it's like, well, Can I really call it depression? Or am I? You know? So you're kind of confused yourself. The difference in like, am I going through a bad moment? Am I having a difficult time as an individual? Just
trying to be able to decipher what's actually happening? How can you actually tell if someone is depressed if they hide the signs? You want to be looking for these symptoms to be hanging around and present for at least two weeks. So sadness, right, that's a key indicator of depression. Crying, you don't know where the client is coming from. Significant changes in eating and sleeping habits. Right, you sleep all the time, you barely sleep. You up all night and
sleep all day. It's hard to get motivated, low energy, like being foggy, you just can't focus. Those are all signs and symptoms. I think one that we don't talk about, especially those of us who are black and people of color, is irritability. Right, y'all know the person right got one nerve and you getting on it. Right. I thought about that just like constantly, and just like I feel that
constantly annoyed. Right, the people that you kind of don't want to be around when you're depressed, what do you want? You want to be left alone? How do you get people to leave you alone? If you look like this, people who whist wrong, you're But if your right, your body wants to be by, and you get your needs met, that need, that depression is telling you want to be by, isolated.
