Episode description

This week on Real Talk with Rachael, we’re talking with Kayla Stoecklein about her book, “Fear Gone Wild: A Story of Mental Illness, Suicide, and Hope Through Loss”. Kayla Stoecklein is an advocate for those confronting mental illness. When she isn’t busy raising her three young boys, you can find her on the beach, sipping an iced coffee and searching for little glimpses of heaven on earth.

We're Talking About:

  • Mental illness looks much different in textbooks than in real life.
  • Suicide is brutal in the way it has you look back to figure out what you could have done differently.
  • Suicide is no one’s fault, it is a tragedy and no one is to blame.
  • Many pastors struggle with mental illness and depression, as discussed in the book “Leading on Empty”.
  • We can help support our pastors by praying for them and focusing on unity.
  • Pastors are not superhuman, they need as much support as the rest of us.
  • Instead of reacting when someone brings up suicide try listening and asking questions.
  • Asking how you can serve someone while they’re grieving can be very helpful.
  • Depression and suicide isn’t a sin issue, it’s a life issue that anyone can grapple with.
