welcome to reteach. This podcast will focus on how we as community college professors need to reteach ourselves in order to close the academic achievement gaps for student equity groups such as Chicanx , Latinx , Black, Pacific Islander, poor, first-generation, re-entry, LGBTQ plus, veterans and others. In reteach, we fully embrace classes that have AP/IB students sitting next to high school dropouts and focus on how to design a class to help both students grow.
In reteach, we see the cultural backgrounds of our students as assets to be appreciated and developed, not deficits to be ashamed of and ignored. In reteach, poverty is a social problem that can be solved in our classrooms, queer is common and being a first-generation college student is not a condition, it is a journey. In reteach, we do not wish for better students. We make students better by making ourselves better teachers.
We make students better by designing, engaging and meaningful classroom experiences, exercises and assessments. We make students better by being knowledgeable, passionate, and purposeful about how we address student equity gaps in our classrooms and at our colleges. We make students better by caring deeply about their success in school and in life. This is reteach. I'm your host, Dr. Bruce Hoskins.
I have taught at the community college level for over 15 years, and I am passionate about diversity and equity issues. I will use this podcast to bring these two worlds together. Subscribe now so that you will be ready for my official launch on August 29th.
