Yeah, Rapper It Up podcast, Elliot Wilson, What's up? Baby? Feel like we're home away from home. You know, it's an honor man win a home of a certain gentleman. DJ CALLI here. You know what I'm saying, Like, first of all, welcome to the cattle residents. You know, we call us the resort. It feels like it's the resort what I'm saying. Um, but we you know I didn't have y'all here. You know, y'all my brothers, and I'm
glad you gotta meet the queen. You met a side right, a shide of alarm, so you know this is the cattle family. And also this is where classics happen anthems are built. Oh yeah, Like why is that room like everyone we've seen on Instagram? It's a small room, right, and like it's not even like a booth, and the side the artist is next to you recording. Like talk about the magic that happens in that studio. I mean, you know, the energy this, the whole properties is truly
a blessing. You know, the way I got this property was a blessing. You know, from hard work, dedication, um, staying focused and focus on the goal. So you know when you when you blessed to be able to put your family and it's something that you dreamed for, you know what I mean, You see your kids running around the energies is beautiful, you know, as the blessing to get it and to be in it. And at the same time, as you know, I've made one of the
rooms as my studio and but that's a small room. Yeah, but besides making the records with me, you know, saying you won't get the experience of the passion, the love, the family and what we're here to accomplish. You know what I'm saying, Like we gotta when we walk in that room, it's gotta be it gotta be the highest
level of performance. And that room, you know, we'll talk more about this later, but like usually when I play a record in that room and the artists you know is you know, some artists take their time and they you know, go back, come back, and some artists is just great at its catching a vibe and go That
room is so special. Every time I turn to the track on and explain the idea and the energy that I want to do, I'll talking about versus is like coming out like magic like immediately you know saying, and this album I got a chance to document some of it. So it's special what I'm saying because a year ago Calacali drop and now we're here with God God did like, did you have plans to return this fast? Well? I always like, um, not just in music, but I always
like to be every year consistent. So on the music side of things, I like to put an album out every year, no later than like a year and a half. The only time I ever took like two years a separation because I was at that time I was moving, uh situations, new partnership. Yeah, so you know sometimes business, yeah, you gotta handle your thing and do it. But I try to come out every year. And the reason why I do it is because I love to do it. I get the itch. I always get the itch to
work around November, my birthday time. The itches, you know, an idea is to start coming out. So I'm like, I'm back making another album. And then want to notice you always do is you have like the big January meeting with your team right January. Yeah, he set it off with the goals what we're gonna do the whole year?
And the album is always involved. But what happens is, Um, you know, I tell myself, when you consistent every year with music, and you make great albums and break great anthems, and you consistent every year, you're ahead of the game. You're ahead of the time. So when people work with you your time, this meaning as in like you take too much of a break, you might get caught up in that because this this world is moving too fast. This is a fast world, like faster than ever because
of the phones. It's just so fast. So even music, you get a Friday releases like so much ship come out. So what are you going to do to breakthrough all that? The record? Got an album and the records gotta be incredible. You gotta show the fans and the people around you that you worked hard. You know, you gotta show them ship Ain't just not everybody can do the one post. Not everybody. Everybody got their own thing. My thing is to show my fans experience to go so fucking hard.
And then at the same time, as um, I've been saying this, later, I'm like, how can anybody outwork me if they're not me? You know what I'm saying, Like, you know, I've been blessed for my peer to say you work hard. Like Pup called me the other day, like, yo, you're a marketing genius, and this is that. I'm like your pop, I'm just getting started and this is this is the this Pup Daddy. You know, he's right. You know, he's telling me, I have it. I'm not making this up.
I have the audio. I'm not no, no, I'm not making it up. You ask him. So what I'm trying to tell you is that he's telling me all the stuff that I look up to him, you know, and he's telling me all this stuff. And I'm like, you know, besides music, people don't realize I'm a hustler. And I want to make it cream today because I think people got it, like you know, like not not not the people in the fans, because the fans that I think certain people don't get did I'm a hustler, you know
what I'm saying. Any any true hustle and see me work, they salute and we salute each other. I'm a hustler and meaning as in I was raised by my mother and father worked seven days a week and took care of me and my brother and sister fed us and loved us and raised us right, but also worked seven days a week and never took a day off. So I gotta see them work all ships. So what I'm trying to tell you is like, my my drive is I'm a hustler. But how do you mean saying that drive?
And what is it mean when you look at and say DJ Khaled, it's about to be a thirteenth studio album crazy No, no, b Elliott thirteen. I let's keep it real. That's a lot several who I was telling another day, I was like, I was telling this one person and I looked in that person's face and I said, in this situation, the conversation I was having, I'm the unicorn. No no, no, I'm not. You know, like you're certain
I'm not making this up. And I have to have to always do this to myself because it keeps me going and say, I can't believe we we accomplished to go again. What I'm saying is like, it's very besides Caliberian the music man and producing the DJ, don't forget, I'm also just a true fan. So if you think about your favorite artists, they either do this and then do that. Not wrong with that everybody got different journey. Some do this and do that, and some do this
and it just don't stopped. And I've been blessed with one of those guys that keep doing this because it goes back to the consistency. You show people you work hard and you great at what you do the same way we look at Lebron James or Michael Jordan's or your favorite athlete. You see them sucking in that gym, working hard every single day and winning rings and and winning Dames and and scoring the highest points even if
they don't win the championship or a playoff. That one player you like, he the one, and what he keep doing when he don't doing what he do Francis, look at jay Z, your brother. The man been like this the whole time. From from Marcy, that's up and it's not stopping. He just getting started. God did me. This is my new chapter of the next level of leveling up. Is this why you said you made this album for
the believers in the nonbelievers? Yeah? Yeah, I mean when I say that they don't believe in us um, God did um. So I'm gonna tell you how the name came about because it was around mark I did on Instagram and it started organically. People was using that after it resonated with him, because it resonates with me when
I said it. So I'm sitting right over there with chilling, and it was like I was on the phone and this person was telling me something and at the one point, I started looking at the phone, like, you know, you can't leave what he's saying, right, So I'm looking at the phone now, like and I'm looking around see if anybody you know what I'm hearing. But there's nobody in the room. So I'm looking at the phone now and I said, Yo, let me call you back. I put the phone down, and this is real talk. I had
my head down. I ain't gonna lie, I would like depressed. Put my head down. I was like, man, they don't believe in us. And immediately God lift my head up and said, God did, I'm not making this up. You might think it's funny, it's just real to me. Immediately my head went up. God said, keep your head up, keep your chest high, do not stop, keep going. And you know that's my mentality. But I needed that too.
Phone call and then you go up, I said, God did so immediately I started talking to myself like I always do on the ground or you know whatever. It's just you know, ship, I'm saying. On here, I'm talking to myself too, you know, saying, you know, I don't believe in us. God, dude, Like I'm not even realizing I'm talking about me. Ship resonated with the whole world. I started seeing everybody going, I'm like, oh my God, look at God. And I'm like, this is my this
the name my album. God, did you know what I'm saying, effort for the nonbelievers, because I don't have a problem with the nonbelievers. I really don't, because it's always more love than any other energy. And we don't realize that because this world is crazy, you know, actually in the music world, this world has just we've been through a lot, and that's why, you know, when we made the record Staying Alive, I felt like that name of that song and just you know, you know, how how how infectious
that hope is. Think about all the ship we've been dodging, we're going down, were dodging Corona. They're talking about this new ship out here. You know what I'm saying, it's ship. Just everything we gotta when your house, you're dodging everything. It's real times. So this album is called God Did, and I just felt like it's resonating with the people that you and they connected with me and they know what I'm doing. What I'm saying, well, that title resonates
to an amazing title track that's its own. Bring out another trip, listen another trail, one of them them theories. I'm saying. My thing is, you just played on some of the album and again we'll get back to the fact that you have already these anthems already done and you're still cooking up to the last minute for last minute man. But but focus on the title track because me and beat I heard it and we are amazed.
I mean, my thing is, like you accomplish in that one track, then most artists can accomplish in the whole album. Like take us through that process of that song. Well, that song. It's crazy because if you notice when I dropped the album trailer, I don't know if you have a chance to see the album trailer we had like the God Did don Oliver right, No, no, that's not I mean in the trailer down trail, it was a bunch of people in the trailer was Drake. Yeah, yeah,
it's just me and my kids. Like the theme music. God did kid Friday. He's a writer and I think he's also an artist. Bless up Friday and he you know, saying my talk. They don't believe in this guy did Bump Bump. What happened was when I dropped the tailor the trailer and announced the name of the album, took off. It took off, resonated again like people resonated with the title. I was like, you know what, and I always was gonna do it is make it into a song. You
know what I'm saying. But I said I'm gonna make that decision. After I announced my album title on the trailer, I knew I was gonna do it not not not the people that's on it back. I knew it's gonna make a track out of it. So Boom that should come out and people are loving them titled the energy is good. Um, people get inspired by motivated by them like bum. So I needed to feel its inspiration. So I went in the studio the same guy with my team and made the dopest track. You know what I'm saying.
I wasn't worried about who's gonna go on it. I was just focused on because I was inspired. So that's how all my albums are. I want to focus on the production of music. If it's me and my team making it, or it's me collaborating with other great producers. You know what I'm saying. The music gotta be right for me to think of some ideas or or or add some instruments or whatever. The music to be right. So the music's right now, I'm like, not even set
down with the album. The music's right. I'm like, man, and I knew this song was missing of the album. Like certain songs make turn the album conversation different. When you make the right song to present the album, it makes you hear everything clearer because you're like, if he can do that, what's next? And I know my favorite albums. When I bought like a favorite album, it's it's a certain way. It gotta resonate with me with a message or a sound out the gate, you know what I'm saying.
So far, once the music was right, I was like I was in um Bahamas, you know, saying. Every time I make an album, if you know it's go Through the years, I've made him I like to go to the I right to go to Jamaica. I'd like to go to Bahamas for a lot of reasons. Oh thank you thinking. So it's chef and listen. Listen. So I'm catching a vibe and I'm like, man, you know Rose, my brother. And I was like, yo, you know Rose and all my albums, which is a blessing what I'm saying.
I was like, man, I can I could do this with Rose. I could do this with Rose. I said, Nah, the Rose I want is when I heard Freemason, you know, saying when I heard Tears of Joy. Um, lord knows I wanted that Rose. And you know I've been you know, you know Rais Rose, my brother and and R problems a lot of his albums with him, and our our history is unbelievable. So I know what Rose do. What I'm saying, So if I called Rose, Rose, I need
you to go here with it. And um, but the music, when I said to him, I knew the music was gonna speak to him. I don't have to tell him it's gonna speak to him in a a certain way. I already know what he's gonna I mean with God, did the direction know what I'm saying with Rose, I knew already by me just sending it. He knew with that man. And have you seen that part when he said something said, you see that passion you put for me and the
beat drop? God, dude, like you know when Rose do that, I'm gonna tell you when you going to that different voice, you know the one that fucking like yeah, yeah, I know. If it's a different I could come out, but you gotta drop the beat that's a different Rose, and only come out unless that music talking. I know, trust me. So Rose sending the birth unbelievable, I said on I'm like, y, I gotta burst. It's making me feel a certain ways.
This is the reason why I do this music, because these feelings and you know I feeling I'm talking about Yeah, so boom, might you know what I want to put Wayne on this? And I'm like, I know I called mcmannus. I know when Wayne here this, just tell him Catlet said catch the Holy Ghost? Did you give up with
Verse on it? Um? Uh? He got the session and he might have heard me like, because you know I document all my me listening to Ship somebody saying like a snippet you said me listening to it ucause I do that with all my my brothers, like it's me vibe and my music, so I can feel what it's doing to me. So Boom Wayne not only did he demolish it this particular record, you have to listen to it like ten times to catch every bar because it's
too many bars. And then the way they're flowing is so incredible because the music got your hair sticking up, and the vibe and they the cadence on it's unbelievable. And then the hook come in. It's infect us in there and now you're you know it's it's it's gospel. I'm saying, like boom, So, I wanted to go see Hope and I want to go see how for two reasons. I wanted to play my album where I was at with it, like I'm not even setting down at that time,
I'm playing my album. And I also wanted to show them my two album covers, and I want here to pick the album cover. So I gave him. I always showing my album covers. I show him like two of them, and I'm cool with either one. I'm happy to be the one, you know what I'm saying. And we you know, the one he picked is the one I wanted to. I'll try and tell everybody just the one. It's the one, it's the one, and he picked the same one. So boom, so I playing my album, you know, I was like, oh,
I want to play you my album. Um so I was grateful for the time, you know, man, busy, I could be able to sit for like an hour or something in a room with me, and it's listen to. Music is prices. There's prices of moments. And you know, at the same time as yo, oh you know, before I even pushed play, I was like, yo, you know you always you know, you know, I said, you know, you know, I mean I need you. Um not even just that. I know you know we've done a lot. I know if you say no, I get it. But
it's nothing wrong with being great all the time. Like like, what do you want me to do? I'd be great, be great. I said, just let them. If the music speaks to you, I need you, you know, with the big dogs, that's what I tell them. If the music speaks to you, don't fight it. If it speaks to you, gotta do it. It's like a it's the love. It's the more about because you're my brother. It made you feel with a certain way I play him, you know how that should start with that trizy trait blesses me?
You know not, we're just staying alive with no secret. So let's start off with no secret and he talking that ship like it ain't no secret that we're the biggest. It ain't no secret that we the top dogs. Dog like, like, know what I mean? You gotta listen to that. You're better breaking out lyrics and ship. I'm just saying what you're saying? What? What? What made me feel like? I had to tell a you're talking about me right like cause I get it. I understood every lyric to the t.
And it's not a secret that we're the biggest. So Drake is, let's let's it go to a point where you want more. But I faded out, you know every you know these big albums, you know his special moments. It fades out after that message and then it goes into god did so boom That's how I played it for home, like you know how I played it. He's like, oh, Ship, this is a five I see you know, I know my brother. He's like Champagne should start cracking ship. I
started spilling, you know. Then the man started chopping up the cigar. Now I'm just telling you what happened that day. So yeah, it's just it's just it's it's just flowing, you know. I'm just started. I didn't get the number two yet. You know what I'm saying, Boom the ship. Come on. I see him like this, see him look at me, I say, and I'm looking at everybody else. I'll try to him. I'll try to tell you that. I was like looking, I know what's gonna touch him.
And he's like and he's like, what the fun I can see his head like doing that one whole do that and then um, I purposely left the instrumental open. Got so now the instrumentals are open, is playing loud. So he's doing this and then you start seeing them HI start coming out of like he's like your ship. I can tell us it like like I'm mad that we have the mic in the room, like let it go, like you were saying, let it go, because that's what music does and that's what happens in that room. So
we're playing it. He's going crazy. After that stopped this ship unbelievable. It's beautiful. You know, it's beautiful. So now we really the bottles are cracking. I'm you know, I know what it did to him. I'm gonna get back to this conversation. So now I'm playing in the album. Yeah, playing the album, and he like like the same way y'all was like, you know, I played like I'm like seven in. Now he's like this ship make a long
story short. He says, my best album. Mhmm. And when he said it was so genuine, like you know, like when someone it wasn't like how you know it's like an interview or worried about the cameras on, just genuine saying, yo, it's your best album. And I never forget. He grabbed my head like that, you know I'm saying, and it was actually a picture. You know, I'm saying, I'm like smiling boom boom, and don't forget. You know. I'm like,
I'm I'm I'm sore stuff. I'm just drink like you know hole, you know holend, have you drink like seven bottles? You don't even know it because the vibe, right is, it's the vibe were in the room. He's like, yo, send me that thing that theory. He said, send me that. He also said send me these other three too. No, no, I mean, I'm just keeping it honest, be honest. So I sent him for saying, you know how dope the album is. I'm not. I don't know if he's wrapping
off for I have no idea. But when host has send him for, it's said. I already knew in my heart and my gut that God did He's gonna because who was vibe? And I was like, you know, you know how every time you might come to my album, like you know Ross did or Little Wayne did, Hove did, Trait did what I'm saying, you know, that's we believe in us. So I'm like, Hove did, I guess you know, not only did he do, he did he reminded everybody
would hold in you know what I'm saying. Like, So when he cut the verse, were he still in New York at this time? I'm in New York, So I get I'm on my way to fly to Toronto to shoot staying Alive, So you know, he got the records down. I fly back, so let me skips something in the room.
He started spitting bars of God did he at which change says you would tell the He started saying all the bar, like the first four bars on there he sat him just so I'm walking out that room losing my mind, like, oh my gods, I'll telling none of your world. You remind them, No, latn't forget those ships he's looking at. I don't forget nothing. That's when the whole come out, Like he gave you so many bars, and just when you thought it was gonna stop, he
kept going yeah. And that's what's so beautiful about it, because that shows you how powerful music is. Like you know what I'm saying, it's a blessing that we can get all them on one record, which is a big blessing. Those are all coats. Let's keep it real, like all of them one record. Then at the same time, for home to be able to let stuff that we never
heard him talk about. Once you break down the bars so many, you understand what I'm saying, Like he like, you know, he reminded people what Hold did from the turnpike to motherfucking everything like that man started talking crazy man said some ship about something, something in the mud, something face mask. It's like it's two main lyrics. It's true. No, you're real. It's too many to breakdown. You know, I see uh hoving in gigs. I see a lot of
hoving gigs. You know, you know shot the gigs. You know that he said boom, he set up the next line. It just show him many. It's just it's just it's not only a dream come true. It's it's this is a blessing for all of us, not just challenge hip hop. Talk to us about what last minute magic looks like.
I mean last minute magic, this ship right now I'm doing this interview stress but in a good way, you know, Like this is like I feel like it's happening, and it happened, but until it's out, I don't take that for granted. You're still constructing big records. Yeah yeah, you know, like I'm gonna be I promise you. This thing I'm talking about is this really God did, like meaning as in something I've been trying to pull off my whole life,
and as of today, it's happening. But until it comes out, you know, because it's so it's so many, it's this is this is like like we just gotta talk about whole without whose blessing? Like certain people, you gotta get their blessing for it that to happen, like when we work with six God. Hold and I'm not gonna name this other situation that's happening right now because I wanted to actually happen, so I don't want to drink myself.
But did it happen? Yes, As now I gotta make sure it actually comes out, which is going to because this is God did. But you understand what I'm saying. I have to tell myself callot, hold up, but it's happening. I saw an instagram you posted one time you said you have no idea that things that have to go through to give you an incredible album and the biggest anthems. I want to know what are some of those things that you have to go through? What are what's the process? Like,
I mean just you know behind the scenes. People don't realize besides clearances and sample clearances and artists clearances and you know, video shoots and you know, first of all, the lesson working with all these great artists. You know, these guys are busy shot the little baby man, you know, coming off this tour doing my video, jumping back on a jet and going straight to stage. He did that two times, you know, for staying alive and and big time.
You know what I'm saying, Um, I mean that meaning is and man with a blessing. Then I mean they don't believe in us ones too, Like the people are trying to like slow shut up. You know, if it's a if it's a clearance or we bless everybody. You know, it's not my first rodeo, so everybody showed up. But also you know, it's like sample clearances that you you're show in love with and you wanted to make happen. You pray that it gets approved and not. You know,
you don't want to take not as an answer. That's when I go in a different mode. You know what I'm saying, Hopefully I might know somebody you know that know that person. You know what I'm saying, Like, I gotta go on that mode and we bless. Everything's going beautifully. But when I meet, when I say that to the people, people don't realize what happens behind the scene. They just think we just put a record out, Like it's a lot from mixing to shooting the video to getting the approvals. Um,
then also let's keep it real or not. Everybody, I'm gonna be happy that you got hit records in your drive, you know what I'm saying. Let's just be honest with each other. Everybody happy that you got the new Wrap Radar rap Radar podcast. Of course you got mad Love, We love you, you know that. But the people out there that might not be excited about this me as like, ohh coming back because it's like, how does call keep getting y'all deal with this ship? Don't y'all. Don't deal
with y'all deal with It's called light. You know what I'm saying. But were blessed? Were great? So when I say that, I really a message about you know, people that work hard. You know here, let me sum it up. A lot of people see the glory but don't know the story. That's just facts. You see Calor right now, Sin with Beta and Elliott Wilson. You know that silk song, But that's that's the They see the glory, but a lot of them don't know the story. So what's the
story behind this DJ Kale Drake connection. If you think about our our friendship, think about from fed up. So let me tell you, Drake. You know cash money, young Onney has always been family. So when Drake got to um young money and cash Money, I'm saying, you know, obviously that was a blessing. I'm saying, mean, that's in you know, little Wayne. My brother met my brother Bert, the whole team. So when I got to meet Drake, I worked with him on fed Up. You know, I'm saying, like,
you know what I'm saying. I've always was, uh, you know, watching the game. You know who's popping and who's coming up. But I always knew he was special artist. He has a young artist in ways, and when I met him, his energy was just beautiful and like you could tell his kid is like ahead of his time. What I'm saying, Um, So I worked with him on fed Up and he
did that for me when I was super blessing. And then when we made our mown one Yeah mom one was our relationship was already brothers and then our mom it was like this was like the chapter, the beginning chapter of of what we're doing today, Like you know, this is we about, this is this is a collabo that I'm that he loved to do and I love to do. We're gonna be rocking with each other. That
song made that mark that you know and changed. Remember that song came out the whole everything shifted because it was a key line where he said, throne take it. How did you feel when he sort of laid that down like you, I mean that I felt great. It's not wrong with saying that, because that's some ship I said every day. The only difference is that we are on the throne. What I'm saying, and you're gonna try
to take it, you know, saying. You know what I'm saying is what I'm saying is so he's supposed to say that. So is any other goat supposed to say that? And now you ain't you know what I'm saying. Like so, our relationship, it's besides music. We really brothers, were the best OYO really a family friends, you know, the whole team,
My team, his team, and just our catalog. I told him before he put Staying in Live, I was like, yo, I could put a cataleg drake greatest hits out now if you think about it, the records that Drake do the most is Calid and Future one and I'm a little baby, you know I'm talking about then up to Date and Ross. I mean ship like every you know I'm saying, like, you know, there's a reason why you do that. Obviously we all make great music together. But
think about where his brother. You know I'm saying. I know I could, I could say here today, that's my brother. So why do you like what he likes? I like with like so with Drake. I you know, I'm one of the guys that speak speak what people are scared to say. Um in the music game. I'm gonna tell you the truth, and I'm surprised nobody saying it because I'm gonna say it. When you work with Drake, when you when you work with Drake, if you right, even
thank you. So you're talking real tall when your best to work with Drake, if he sends you something it's unbelievable, it's facts. Don't fight it. Yeah. The other day was mixing, Yo, how you like to mix? You know what I'm saying. Even if I wanted to turn the high hat up, even if I thought this needed, I like with Drake, like all right, even if this one part sounds and I thought could change, Drake, you like that. I love it,
you know what I'm saying. So, now if I was a rapper any any singer you get an opportunity with Drake, it's a blessing. It same the same way. It's a blessing. They're gonna God want they become as big as Drake and not saying they're not, but you know he deserves that the same way all the other goats. You not only do you follow the lead. Once you have a real relationship, you can have any type of conversation about anything. But me knowing Drake and my experience working with Drake,
He's a winner and I'm a winner. And I tell you know, and I know people that look up to me to make sure we win. They don't question what I what I question. They know and they believe right and I've showed them and that sometimes they might not get it and might trust me the same way when he tells me, I'm like, you know what I believe? So how does he how do he presents you staying alive in the BGS things? Well, it's crazy because, um, you know, Drake is actually the one I told me
I played him. I played Drake my album was like seven and seven done, came in here and I played him that God did just the thing I used for the trailer. The music, it was just it was just the groove and singing, and I was like, yo, Usually I announced my album title with my single, and I was like, yo, you think I shoul announce my album tied with Staying Live or you should? I announced my autum of town before that because I wanted to really
announce it right away. But I was like, let me ask him just you know, it's sucking six gods, I like with Drake like, you know saying so I like, yo, I said, not just being rare, right, So I said, you think I should and ask my ilum titled before I dropped my single. He's like, yeah, You're like, you should probably use that for your trailer. Mm hm, So you see what I'm saying. I wanted to do that without him saying it, but this is six cards I like with Drake like so immediately I knew my mind
was thinking right. I was thinking right. So I end up doing this is we'll talk. Let me tell you what happened with that, because originally he's like, yo, man, you know, I was like, you know, we always like to do like two keys, you know, say two keys, two songs or you know what I'm saying, and he's like, Yo, check this out, no secret mhm. So I was like, oh my God, like, Yo, this is my hot I'm gonna start and yeahah and and and then I'm going into this. But I didn't make the record of that yet.
In my head, I was like, already know what I'm gonna do. That's why immediately I was so inspired, like, oh, no, Bible, start like this. I gotta bring this now because the ain't no secret that we're the biggest. That's just off a conversation twenty minutes thirty minutes in the studio with six God, that an our dinner. We're vibing now. You know that's my brother. I'm saying, not just music. I just come to the house, chill family. I go to his house, his family. But we aspire each other. We
inspire each other all the time. We're brothers. And Drake like we look like each other to fuck it, you know, saying you know what I mean, Like that's my brother's family, family team, you know, cheers at Drake. Six guys. Just little baby get involved. So little Baby, when Drake sent me the record, he's set me around. I got something for us. So it's just Drake's vocals on it. I'm losing my mind. He goes, Yo, me, you a little baby.
I'm like, of course, So the concept great minds think alike of co hold On, hold On, Boom Baby and him. This baby heard it already and was already you know, they was already working, you know, because those are brothers too. So I get my Hollywood star. So Baby calls me to congratulate me that I got my Hollywood star, which is a my brother. Little Baby called me. I just got to my hotel and YO, just want to call you congratulations on your star. That meant a lot to
me what I'm saying. It's my brother. And he's like, you're talking to Drake. I'm like, yeah, I talk to Drake. Um, I need you to cut that burst. He's like you talk. I'm like yeah, I talked to Drake and I was like, Yo, this's gonna be the biggest thing. I need to cut that birth. So he's like, cool, when I get to Miami, just cut it. So he came to Miami. We cut the burse and you know, we cut. When I work with a little baby, we cut a bunch of records
and it's just comes out incredible. He loved working in my room, my studio, and our relationship is pure, you know what I mean. So now that then as soon as I got everything done, I sent it to Drake. A matter of fact, Drake was shooting the video for the new album Dropped Um, the one of the wedding, so I sent him to record that day, you know, saying. I was like, Yo, Drake, I need to get the video though, you know, saying, mean you ain't shooting video
a long time. Last. Our last video was pop Star, our brother Justin Bieber Hold it Down because it was the pandemic, you know what I'm saying. I was like, I was like, I think we didn't shoot the video since no new friends. We dropped records before that, but with no video, so I was like, yo, we gotta do it. And He's like absolutely, I'm like, damn, this ship going. I don't know if I'm bugging out now. Usually like schedules like, you know, we gotta do it.
Matter back with Miami, come to see you at the crib, but we're gonna figure it out. So now you're in the crib in Miami, like, you know, we gotta shoot that video, you know what I'm saying. He's like, no, we're gonna do it. Call Um tells future to prints. Put in the schedule Drake and Baby, no problem. Schedule was humble and then shooting the video right yeah, Drake. You know, throes an idea in their said we had a bunch of shot on the treatment. When Drake come on, boom,
everything changed. We're doing this doing that. He a genius. All those skits was done off up the fly. Ain't no treatment to Calman do this and then follow my lead and you know I'm talking to my ship. You know, that was just off the fly, and it's one of the best videos I put out in the funnest video and not even just that him to give me that time, you know what I'm saying at that time, not only to bless me, but also a video too, bro that
ship attention everybody watching, any artists. You know what. It ain't easy to do that to get Drake in the video. I don't give it what you say. You're saying, it's a big blessing and my brother Drake and little Baby bless me, you know what I mean. And it definitely was a blessing to start the album before the album came out. You know what I'm saying, Like my outcome staying in Live dropped my I'm dropped. Three weeks after that, this is you know, God did stay in They don't
want us to live, so we stay alive. They don't want us to live? God, did you know what I'm saying that both the album come What about your marketing side where you're like you challenge all this, You'll say, like, you'll make both statements and sometimes you may get a little backlash. You'll say, this is the hook of the century and this song is whatever you trying to challenge yourself when you do those No, No, I'm telling the truth. And you know what, First of all, the original Staying
Alive is really unbelievable. Bgs. Come on, let' stop playing ourselves. That's like one of the biggest records in the world to right. So I'm trying to tell you when Drake did it. He's such a gene. He found a way to take that staying alive concept and make it in an infectious, melodic way. He said, try me a hundred times, wanted me to live, wanted me to cry, wanted me to stay in live. I don't know about you. It's incredible. Of course it's one of the biggest hooks because everybody's
singing it. Elliott, listen, you can love me, hate me whatever one thing you can't. Um, you're gonna have to respect everybody's singing the ship. It sain't nothing news like you know our catalog. What I'm saying, what I saying. I said, we're all in sync, you know, like the whole world sings like we are the world staying in live. You would think we're the group in sync. It was a hard time. Getting the clearance from the BGS was um, it was shout out to the BGS. What I'm saying.
They cleared it. Um, it was a blessing. Um, you know for them to clear it. It's an interpretation, you know I'm saying. And they cleared it. And we beyond grateful for that, for that clearance. I'm saying, it's not about being hard, It's about thank you. Because nothing nothing, what what what's not saying? Nothing easy comes you know, it don't come easy to wat what I'm saying, like, So I was a blessing for them to take time to approve it. So I saw on your Instagram, So
you have someone else in the studio. You have Sean. I saw him cutting the record as well. Well, Sean, um, that's my brother with I still cut up plate, you know, saying because that's come I come from sound culture, and saying like, and you know my album, I didn't get a chance to play you with the day y'all came
in this to it. But you know every album maker reggae, you know, Uh, I got on one record, Boo Ju Scissor or Capleton, Bounty Killer and Skilly Bang all on one record, which is possible to do, I'm telling you, and shot the video. It's so special, so proud of it, so proud of it, and you know, and let's go back to my roots or when I used to be uh you know, in the sound gang, sound like killing sound system. And so I still cut dub and Sean was at my crib and like, y'all want you to
cut um bad boys? So I would you already embaringing I already had them do it, right, I had them do it. I knew you know, Shane, I knew you know, get him, you know, and it's so crazy to cut it. And I heard that shine voice which we all love. We missed, and I remember when he first came home, he didn't have that voice right, and he explained to me why that voice wasn't there. I let him explain it, but he explained it to me, and I looked at him like, damn, yeah, I understand. And then how is
here now? And beautiful that you got it right? So it's crazy. And then look at his journey. I can't wait to see, uh, like a documentary or movie on shine talk about your journey? Though, Kelly, we all know Terror Square. He started ninety nine gams like, but what is it being beginning for you? I read somewhere like was it Peter Piper run DMC? That was like your drink? Yeah,
Peter Piper is a perfect record. That explained it for me because it's one of my favorite records to cut up, scratch up, but also my first official hip hop concert ever been to in the arena. I forgot a tour was a run DMCBC Boys, L m J. It was like a big tour. You know what I'm saying, you know, stay the boom box, the whole ship. What city did
you see that? North Carolina? And I never forget what I'm saying watching that show and I was just at I was probably like I don't know the exact age, but I had to be between ten and twelve, you know what I'm saying. Or maybe even I don't know, but I remember. And I started collecting buying at that time. Um, and I was the kid in the crew that I would make takes for us off a boom box, you know, tape, and I was record like a pause button and make tapes,
I'm saying. And eventually I got my first turn table, you know I'm saying. Then my my, my love for the music spot. My room was all records and cassette tapes, and I started buying like speakers and making my own, like this car speakers back in the days you just have car speakers. I would take that and I'd be my my, my, my DJ equipment, you know, wired up something like a box, homemade box with a servant Sherwin
Vegas speaker and that, you know what I'm saying. Like, So now I'm i'm I'm, I'm I'm starting to DJ. And while I'm starting to DJ, I immediately fell in love to make beats. So I end up buying like an MPC SP twelve hundred and then and back in
those days we said were a lot. So you know, I was, you know, producers like Diamond D and Pete, you know, Q Chip and you know what I'm saying, Dr tre and you know, like the Illmatic, all the producers on that album, like thinking about Large Professor and you know always incredible Um and a lot of those were DJ producers too. So I'm like puff Daddy, I'm looking at everybody like, man, it's what I want to do.
So I'm inspired of making beats and and I fell in love with DJ and and I just knew from that day of being in that garage, I said, man, this is what I want to do forever. It gives me a feeling that I could be in my boxes and the white t in the ruin and I'm in heaven like I'm just it's the music. And I knew I wanted, you know, to be on that big stage. I knew I wanted to be a music exactly. I knew I wanted to be one of the biggest producers DJ artists. I knew I had so much in me,
but I knew it was gonna take time. Know what I'm saying, I knew it was gonna take um a lot of hustle, a lot of grind because my expectations and my goals were so high. And then you know, remember I used to do Street Team from you know, Black Moon and you know Smith and Wesson, And you know what I'm saying. You know, you know I got you know, the bad boy days. I'm saying, like, so I got I was just so in it from Jack the Rapper. You know I should work for Jack the Rapper.
What I'm saying, so like you know me and Joe at New Music Seminar, you know I was in there. I gotta see those moments, what I'm saying, Like I gotta see Funk Flex DJ home Base. You know what I'm saying, Like, you know what I'm saying, that's the first time I ever seen somebody use three turns labels. Yeah, what I'm saying like, lie, So you know here's me, as a kid not old enough to getting these clubs. I'm finding a way. You know what I means to me as a kid flying in New York to go
buy music at Rocket Soul. You know what I'm saying, Like, you know the white labels, I just it's just I love it, you know what I'm saying, Like, you know, when somebody's talking about you know, like the purest and we the fucking purest, Like I don't I want somebody I get I can't talk to me about success. Doesn't
take that away, No, I don't know. It's because it's a feeling, it's a love, and that goes back about making these records and to make music make you feel a certain way you want to want to do it, you know what I'm saying. Yeah, it's also important to have that love of the culture that's always still embrace the new, like you know you have already established you
get when most people can't get the Ja versus Drake versus. Well, you're upstairs with us braving about Nardwick and like the new artists talk about what the connection to the I'm loving the new artist right now, what I'm saying, Like Kolde at Um you know they're not new, but they the next generation. You know. I love Kode, I I love Narwick, I love Little Baby Um Dirk Dirk. Like these guys are talking that ship, they talking to them. You know how we love Bars. They got Bars. We
had a conversation with qua Takeoff. They were raving about the record that they cut for you. Oh man, listen and quave On take Off, Like, you know, we all love the me we know what we love from them. We love that. Yeah, they special that nobody knows how
to do it like them. I love that group. The record we made was like I feel like, Yo, I'm looking around the room and is it just me or this ship is fucking beyond insane, you know what I'm saying, Like, and everybody keeps saying to me, I'm like, yeah, it's just it's special. But the new generation I love them because the ones that know how to take it to
the next level. Like Little Baby. You know, I don't compare nobody and nobody, but to my feeling that I had, you know, work ethic, he has the work ethic of a little Wayne My comparing saying, watch my Owther drive in the world I've been in the student a little Baby will cut and records in your face if the vibe is right. And Wayne Wood two watched Wayne cut like fifty in my face and after that, maybe we're taking over in brown paperback After the fifty, I'm gonna
tell you the truth future me and him. He'll cut like twenty in one day in your face, Like if this vibe is right. I love the artists that take their talent in the craft to the next level because what they do is like a little baby. Not only is he making dope records and collaborating with with with me and other great people. He on tour, he everywhere. He getting a lot of money. Let's be clear. He hustle and I love it. He's not slowing down other people.
You know, I don't. I told you early interview. I'm a hustler. So when I see that, I'm like, that's right, that's right, keep going, don't stop. Real hustlers, salute real hustles, you know all that other stuff, because they're not hustles. They don't understand its mentality. They don't understand its cride.
They don't understand not sleeping, only sleeping two hours. You know, when I when I tell people hugging their pillow and putting slob over and meeting those guys that wake up four in the afternoon, those are the people that you run so fast away from. Those guys were talking, complain all day and wake up four in the afternoon, not us. That's what I'm trying to tell you. So the new generation I respected the ones that's taken into the respect them all the ones that's taken to the next level.
You can see it, you can feel it. And they're not going nowhere. They're starting to become young you know. Yeah, yeah, barking there after that you can turn into the I right, I don't want to. Yeah, it turns, it turns into it. I'm seeing you and I'm watching it happen. Now you know what I'm saying. And those are the ones that I'm like, yes, you know, like like I know, I know, I know the hard work they put in. So when is an artist ready for a DJ Kalan album? When
do you realize that now is the time? Man um my albums. I have to I want to be personally a fan besides the opportunity to make the record with you. I want to be able to be a fan of like nar A Wick, I'm like a fan of his. Before I started making this album, I kept telling everybody want to put an arto on my album. I didn't know. I hope you want to do it? Ye made at me, I said. Before I even made the album, I was like, I want to put Narto on my album. He dope,
he dope, he dope, he dove. I kept putting kites out there, let him know. I want to do something, and Mark Pitts linked me up with Mark Petch me up. Whatever. Know what I'm saying. So and I uh he said that first back, and I'm like, damn, this boy, this guy is unbelievable. Like you know what I'm saying. It's like the answer your question, when is it time for to be on a Callet album? Man? You gotta I mean it with all respect. You gotta put in that word the same way I put in that word. You
know what I'm saying. And if you put in that word, everybody's gonna expect you to be on the album. And there's people haven't been on my album that deserve to be on my album. I just the way I make records, it's just a it's just I just go with the vibe and the way I want to do. It's not like I left somebody Else's never that. It's just about at that time, this is what was being made. And I don't want to fight that feeling or force something
because I'm gonna make another one. You know what I'm saying. Not tell all the artists I haven't worked with. We're gonna, you know, God will will eventually gonna work because we're gonna make I'm not it's not my nice. I'm gonna keep going and we don't believe in that's gotta keep going. And women are well represented to like you. So it's like we to have you on our program, but you tell him about another artist we need to have on here. It's Scissor. You need to talk about Sissors so special,
So siss are on my album. Um, this is the second second time I got a chance to work with her, and that's my sis. I just love talking to her on the phone. In her text, she's so pure, like it's just like when you make the record with her, it's like Sissor knows when I say this is with all love, like I get. I started breaking out a sweat and everything because it's like she's so pure. No, it's so pure to the point like yos, you know
what I mean. And then and I know she don't really do many features, and we've been waiting for her album for a long time too, and I keep telling her she's so amazing. She had an album. Her debut album is a fucking masterpiece and it's it's a classic. And I'm like, man, and we love her so much. He's so talented. So when I get a chance to get a record with her before she puts her new album out, it's a truly blessing, you know what I'm saying. Because I don't know nobody that's not a fan of
sism because I'm a fan. Everybody loves sissm Um. But she's also spiritual, she's special um, and she's a beautiful person with a beautiful soul. And she blessed me unbelievable with my new record. And we're also fans of Jada Kiss. He played us uh cut with them you have the versus the verses, So I took the snippet of when you know everybody got you know when he was on versus that one moment is a moment forever. It's a moment in time, like and I know it probably hits
you the way it hit me when that happened. It was a good feeling at the time. I get some real hip hop ship and you're like, that's dope, and that's I got kiss. You know what I'm saying that, you know, as kids doing that ship. So it was a feeling and you know, so I wanted to put that um because the record I got with him, he just goes so many bars talking about New York. It's only right because he's from New York. Um, he loved
New York and he raised the flag. Unbelievable. But he just came off the stage from versus talking that ship. I am New York and this and now I don't live here. I don't live there. I live in So I'm going crazy. So we made a record that sampled the old James Brown, you know what I'm saying, and he went crazy. You know that Jada kiss is one of my favorites. So you know what I'm saying on
my albums. If you notice every album I ever made, you notice that always got something from the era of you know, our era you know I'm talking about, but as the foundation. But at the same time as these guys are times Jada Kisses times you can make a record to night tomorrow, don't matter what. He's one of the greats, and he gave me something special. Has there ever been a moment where you've received the vocals and you might be how to send them back like you
just weren't fans of the vocals um I have. But after I've been in the studio, if I see something that's not going the right to I try to immediately stop it. If they accept my my critique and let me produce um and usually they do what I'm saying and I'll explained Tom why you know what I'm saying and hopefully and usually you know, that's part of collaborating, being in the room together. But then there's also times where I'm not might not be sure that I learned something.
You know, KNA I got we know it all, especially with the new generation. You gotta respect the new generation. They come with a new sound. They might teach you something and they do. He's new generation. They've got different pockets. You know, they go to the pocket that's like like I've done before, Like yeah, ship that you like? Is
this real? Like you know the pockets they being like when a little baby did every chance I get you know what I said when I said keep going, what else I'm gonna say that he left a little piece of the beat breathe I was like natural, just like keep going like this sh sounds so unbelievable. So you know, I think the most important thing when you make a record is the energy, and everybody know what we need to do is we gotta go here with it, not
just coming here and say we made a record. And that I think when people know on a CAVT album, that's what we do. We go here. You're saying absolutely why I feel like you're like one of the last prominitive DJs in the game, Like why hasn't there been a guy to emerge? I guess in in the wake of your success. I mean, beat I appreciate because that means a lot of me because the thing is, like,
I'm one of the greats. I don't know if I said on this interview, don't know if I said on Instagram or a post um, but I always respect the ones before me, and I'm the student what I'm saying. But of was it decades in the last three decades, one of the greats, you know what I'm saying, Like the same way I looked at pub Daddy when I was coming up, it's one of the greats. Don't be scared to say Cat is one of the great because
it's the truth. You know, what I'm saying. I got no problem saying that without blinking my eye all, Like you know what I'm saying. So I'm saying like it's facts. But I just feel like in today's world, we need to show more love to each other. But does that feel you do you feel like you still have to silence some more nonbelievers? Is that motivation? We all use that for motivation, even when it's not there. We tell ourselves there it's just something. It's like something in our
head that we got to always do. But Um, to be honest with you, I actually keep a bunch of the the bullshit that's distortion away from me. I don't really fall for it, like you know what I'm saying, Like because I wouldn't get I wouldn't be where I'm at right now if I felt for it. So I'm pretty good at like blocking it out, Um, because i know it's not real. You know what I'm saying. You know what I mean. I know it's real, and I
know what's not real. You know what I'm saying. I know when when you want to just talk ship And I know when because at the end of the day is if you had to break it down stop at one point, you're gonna have to and don't get twitted to so many people that do. We can't take it away from the people that showed me love. Y'all, brother, and the fans. You know what I'm saying. The fans said while we do this ship and then all the other my peers, my peers sit me up and tell
me some shop. I can't believe it. He's the guys I look up to, and they started telling me yoll this that, and I'm like, yo, you know, I'm saying, show it's a blessing. But I appreciate the love. Thank you. You said win with us when within period we like to win with you my left that's right, appreciate didn't believe was coming back, did That's right. That's right, that's right, yeah,
