Understanding Emotions Through Music

Welcome to Radio Headspace. My name is K. Songa. I'm really excited about this week's segment called Mindful Music. I know it's a bit of a quirky name. But the way it's going to go is like this. I'm going to give y'all a lyric of a favorite song of mine and I'm going to have you guess the song. I'm going to also explain the wisdom behind the lyrics and why I selected them.

in regards to mindfulness, meditation, or just general life lessons. And naturally, this is my personal interpretation, so nothing is set in stone here. And not to worry, at the end of the episode, i will reveal which song the lyrics are from all right so today's lyrics are as follows anger he smiles towering in shiny metallic purple armor queen jealousy envy waits behind him. Her fiery green gown sneers at the grassy ground. From the beginning the song mentions strong emotions.

and the colors that are associated with them and adding the color really helps the listener to feel the intensity of these strong emotions

Personal Journey and Emotional Connection

This really spoke to me because I was going through my own range of strong emotions when I first heard this song. It was my junior year in high school and I was going through it. my workload was hellacious physics ap english chemistry and oh my god calculus drove me mad and then one afternoon I had just briefly stopped by a buddy of mine's house to pick something up, and he put on this song before he went to retrieve what I came for. As soon as I heard the first note, I was hooked.

The song spoke to everything that I was going through at the time, naming all of those heavy emotions. One thing that I do know that I'm not alone in is the experience of strong emotions. Anger, jealousy, and envy are mentioned in the beginning of this song. But later on in the song, the emotion of love is also mentioned. In fact, this song is actually about love. The many faces of love.

the intensity of love, and of course, the beauty of love. This song states that love is really at the center of many, if not all, emotions. I don't know if I totally agree with that. But I do understand where this artist is coming from. Love is such an intense, all-encompassing, and extremely subjective emotion that it's not so far-fetched to see how all the other strong emotions may actually stem from it.

Listening to this song then, and really even to this day, it helps me to navigate through the moments when I'm experiencing strong emotions. Now, what the lyrics at the top of this episode don't explain... is how the next steps of learning how to manage these strong emotions is also super important. Creating that space between stimulus and response is crucial in making wise choices and decisions. Meaning,

It's good to not just react to things. We can notice our feelings, then respond. And that's where our mindfulness and meditation practice comes into play.

Mindful Music Practice and Resources

So here's an exercise you can try where you use music and mindfulness to manage those strong emotions. Put on a song and then ask yourself, why do I relate to this song? Which emotions come up when I hear it? What lyrics resonate with how I'm feeling? These questions will help you connect with your emotions and it helps to actually name them.

whether it's anger and jealousy or happiness and excitement. This will help you to recognize what you're feeling. And with practice, you won't be caught off guard when that emotion shows up in other areas of your life. You'll be better equipped to respond instead of reacting on impulse. So as always, I encourage you to continue with your consistent practice.

And if you need a song suggestion, today's song is Axies Bold as Love by the late great Jimi Hendrix.
