If you plot your goals on a simple matrix and plot all of your investments on the same matrix, you'll more easily be able to select an appropriate investment to fund each goal.
Here's the matrix:
home-run dollars
aggressive dollars
safer dollars
-------------------> short-term -----> mid-term -----> long-term
