¶ Tragedies and Violent Incidents in Schools
This is the Everyday Podcast for the Everyday People . Guys , welcome back to another episode of R-E-D . It's the Everyday Podcast for the Everyday People and guys . This particular week , episode 20 , is filled , as always , with the top of the line stories .
Stories that are going to leave you speechless , stories that are going to move you to think , stories that are going to give you that ability to see things in an entirely different perspective , and I'm just so happy to be here with you guys , as always . Thank you so much for all the subscriptions and those who have been leaving comments .
I really appreciate them , especially on TikTok and YouTube . Keep that coming , guys , and the Instagram family is growing as well . Love you , guys . Indeed , so much . Here's our first story . It does begin on a bit of a sad note . It was covered in connection with the school shooting in Perry Iowa , but we're going to follow up this way .
Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger dies 10 days after being wounded in school shooting . This is Perry Iowa . The principal wounded in the Perry Iowa school shooting on January the 4th has died . Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger and six others , including two staff members and four students , were injured in the shooting that left one sixth grader dead .
The 17-year-old student who opened fire also died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot . Caldwell Parris funeral home in Crematory confirmed the death of Marburger after the family announced it on a GoFundMe page . At approximately 8 o'clock am January 14th , dan lost his battle . The post said he fought hard and gave us 10 days that we will treasure forever .
Marburger's daughter , claire Marburger , posted this on her Facebook page my dad was an incredible man educator , husband , dad and grandpa , a person I inspired to be and hope to make proud every day . He will be greatly missed . Marburger was called a hero by many in the days after the shooting .
He put himself in harm's way so students could try to escape from the teenage shooter who opened fire in the cafeteria as students were gathering for breakfast before class . The AP reported the Parris Community School District released a statement on Sunday afternoon saying they shared their deepest condolences with the Marburger family on the passing of Dan Marburger .
It was indeed a tragic thing that occurred there in Parris , iowa . I know one of the things in connection with this particular story that is just gripping and unsettling is that it's very close to home for me personally .
So when my brother was shot , you guys know that my brother passed away a couple of years ago , but when he was shot it was in July , it was in June and he was in the hospital for about a month and so in that entire month I held on to hope I mean my family . We thought that he would be able to recover from this .
We thought that he was going to be able to get out and move forward with his life , but unfortunately he did succumb to his injuries . And so right here , I know the Marburger family . You guys are dealing with that same emotion , that same heaviness of thinking things were going to go one way and then things went in a totally different direction .
Well , here on the Everyday Podcast , you guys do have our deepest condolences . We truly love you guys , and if you can take this thing one day at a time , this loss , things will slowly but surely get better . I know personally one of the difficult things about dealing with grief is not having someone to confide in .
So if you as a family have one another and you guys rally together , you can overcome this tragedy . Now our next story follows that story just the same . Again , we are extending our heartfelt condolences to another individual that was killed in connection with that shooting in Perry , iowa , but this time it's an 11 year old .
His name was Amir Jolif , this grater killed in Perry school shooting . Remembered as a joyful boy , amir Jolif dashed out of his home in Perry Thursday morning , eager to see his friends on the first day of school after winter break . It was Vintage Amir known as Smiley around his house , an 11 year old whirlwind of cheerful activity .
He kept a trunk of toys unlocked in the front yard so anyone could play with him . His mother said Amir's loved soccer , played the tuba and sang in choir . He had a habit of touching people on their shoulder and asking them how their day was .
Amir was killed Thursday before class even started when a 17 year old at Perry High School , which was mentioned in our previous story , opened fire in the cafeteria . The sixth grader , who attended the middle school that's connected to the high school , was shot three times .
Authority said Seven others , including the school's principal , whom we now know is deceased , two other staff members and four students were wounded before the shooter died of self inflicted gunshot wound . The sad thing about this story is that an innocent life paid the price because of someone's heinous crime .
Further details and connection with the shooter , dylan Butler . Individuals have made mention reliable sources that he was bullied .
I know bullying today may be looked at as a joke by many , but the sad part about it is that bullying does have an effect on individuals , and if we're not careful as to what we're doing or saying to an individual , it can lead to more and more tragedies . Now it was very nice that the family , the mother in particular , of Amir here .
She sent her condolences to the family of the shooter , and so that was very nice that she was able to express herself that way .
Some people would have taken a different approach , but for her to be able to distinguish that , even though this 17 year old boy , dylan Butler , killed her son , amir , that two wrongs don't make a right and that it's not entirely the family , it's not on the family , rather that their son made a personal decision that affected the lives of others .
Sometimes people target the families , and so that wouldn't be fair to them . As human beings , you want to be able to be reasonable as best you can under crisis circumstances , and again it's one of the questions that was posed to us .
Someone asked us if we were able to catch the shooter , the person who was guilty of the crime and connection with my brother's death . What would we do ? We understand that it has nothing to do with this family . I know when those things happen some people just want revenge . They want to unleash that anger on someone .
But the challenging thing about that is , from experience , it just doesn't do anything . You still have lost your loved one , you still feel devastated and in despair and you may have jeopardized things in your own personal life that you have to deal with each and every day . Now this next story . We're following up here with a very unique circumstance .
When this particular story came to my desk I thought it was quite interesting because it just highlights just how foolish certain individuals can be . Suv plows into Colorado High School , causing significant damage . Very interesting . We're going to Steamboat Springs , colorado .
Authorities are looking for a driver who smashed into Steamboat Springs High School late Friday night or early Saturday morning . School officials said the crash caused major structural damage . The SUV , which officials said could possibly be a dark blue Nissan Armada , crashed into a set of double doors by the school's bus lane that opened up to the cafeteria .
The SUV will have damage to the front driver side . School officials said there were tire tracks in the snow that showed that the driver of the Nissan SUV was doing donuts in the parking lot before the crash .
According to school officials , anyone with information about the crash or who may have been involved is asked to call Steamboat Springs Police at 970-879-1144 . 970-879-1144 . Tips can also be reported to Safe2Tell at 877-542-7233 . Safe2tell at 877-542-7233 . So this is a perfect example in this story of what can go wrong when 1 . You don't know how to drift it , 2 .
You haven't seen Fast , furious Tokyo Drift and 3 . You just don't have enough hobbies at home to be able to prevent these heinous things from occurring . I follow up story continuing in this theme of tragedy that's going on in schools today . We talked about it quite a bit , but it's still becoming prevalent . This story in particular was a shout out story .
Someone came across this story . They wanted to see it on the show . They wanted to be able to hear my commentary on it . So we're going to give it a try . Polk County Substitute Teacher Arrested for Sex Offenses Against 2 Students PCSO . We're now in Lakeland , florida .
A high school substitute teacher was arrested in Polk County for sex offenses against two of his female students . According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office , jaron Dunne , 33 , served as a substitute English teacher at New Beginnings High School , a charter school in Lakeland .
He was charged with sex offence on a student by an authority figure and transmission of material harmful to a minor and booked into the Polk County jail on Thursday .
According to PCSO , the investigation began when the two female victims , a 17-year-old and 18-year-old , told their guidance counselor that Dunne had sent both of them explicit videos of himself on Snapchat .
The 17-year-old victim told detectives she had borrowed a charger for her phone from Dunne and while her phone was charging , he went into the phone and added himself to her Snapchat . He then began sending her messages asking her to come visit him at his house . According to PCSO , she declined , but he continued to send messages , including the explicit video .
The 18-year-old victim told detectives that she had accepted Dunne's friend request on Snapchat , which led to him telling her she was pretty and that he wanted to start a relationship with her .
According to PCSO , he told the 18-year-olds he wanted her to be a friend with benefits and come over to his house and have sex with him , in addition to sending multiple explicit videos of himself . Dunne's bond was set at $30,000 during his first appearance Thursday , according to the investigators . So again , this story here in particular .
This happened way back in November , but this story now is just reaching the desk of RED podcasting , and I have to say it's one of those stories that just sends chills down your spine , because I see a pattern with teachers today some teachers today that they have this brazen attitude toward getting what they want from these students , and the sad part about it is
the students are the ones who ultimately pay the price . It's not a matter of if it's going to happen in your school At this point in our history or at this point in time . It's a matter of when it's going to happen into your school . What can you do when these things come up ? Don't leave yourself alone with the teacher .
Now , this scenario I do find it a bit interesting that she allowed this teacher to put a Snapchat into her phone and that she engaged back and forth with this teacher as he sent sexually explicit things to her . We are talking about a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old involuntary . Nevertheless , though , it doesn't condone what the teacher did .
It's just a whole , entirely different level of wrong , but it's not fair for the victims in connection with how things are now transpiring .
But what I thought was of interest to guys in this particular story is that no , schools can't be able to police or to be able to watch every incident in connection with students and teachers , but maybe perhaps giving teachers an aid in the classroom so that someone else is present , so that the teacher is never in a situation where they're alone with the student .
This might be costly in some cases in connection with school budget and things of that caliber , but if we're talking about someone's safety and protection versus a few extra dollars , I'm really pretty sure that the caring about someone else and making sure your students are protected will outweigh the dollars any day . Here's our follow-up story .
¶ High School Restroom Restrictions and Violence
Northern California High School's restroom restrictions draw backlash . We're going to Marysville , california . A new restroom policy is not sitting well with some teachers and students at a Northern California High School . Safety concerns and bathrooms at Marysville High School are prompting the school to lock them up altogether .
This policy isn't something that we just made up . This is a response to concern from students that came to our town hall meeting for all of our kids , said Ryan Williams , the assistant superintendent of administrative services at the Marysville Joint Unified School District . Under the new rules , if a student needs to use the restroom during class .
They have to first get a pass from their teacher . Then they are to take that pass and trade it in at the main office for a bathroom pass and are then escorted to the restroom by school security . Once the student is finished , they return to the school office , swap back their pass for the teacher's pass and return to class .
Some students say they're not too happy with the new policy . The entire problem stems from a group of students who are acting up right , but they're not getting punished for it , another student said . But instead what they're doing is implementing this bathroom policy to cover up for it .
Some suggestions I heard from staff after having more security on campus to cast troublemakers and harder discipline on students that caused disruption . This is the students closing comment , nothing further on this story .
I will say , though , when it comes to the using of bathrooms , anybody knows that when it comes to students in school bathrooms , that's where they're going to have their get down that students are going to do the most damage and the most dirt in the school bathrooms .
Now , how the school goes about implementing this policy , that's an entirely different story , but the sad part is I've come to learn in life that when you're dealing with good students and bad students or challenging students . It's often the good students that have to pay the consequences , because the bad students just don't care .
In fact , this might have been what they wanted all along . We wish you guys all the best in connection with this story and we hope that you guys are going to be able to get exactly what you need to be able to make school a success . Moving forward . Now .
This story here in particular follows up this way , and I thought it was very unique because often times parents are chilled and laid back , but at some point parents are going to just stop and they're going to take action and matters into their own hands . Correction officer gets on school bus . Threatens to arrest elementary school kids .
A deputy say we're going now into Calweta County , georgia . A Calweta County corrections officer is under investigation after deputies said he threatened to arrest students on a school bus . The officer is a parent of a student at Northside Elementary School .
A report from the Calweta County Sheriff's Office said that on January the 5th , christopher Elder , 37 , stepped aboard a bus and spoke to the students , mentioning a few by name . The report said that after the incident , the bus driver had to pull over because the children were scared and needed to calm down .
According to the report , elder told the children quote bullying is illegal . I have handcuffs on my hip and I'm not afraid to use them . If it happens again , I will contact your parents and will have you arrested for harassment and bullying . The report said the bus driver told Elder that she would take care of it and told him not to get on the bus again .
According to the report , elder then met with the principal of Northside Elementary School and told her about getting on the bus , saying that he may go to jail for his actions . That is okay because he is a man and he can take it . The investigation remains active and Elder has not been charged .
Some will ask in this case , what are you charging this man for ? Because in one sense , if the man doesn't step up and defend his kid , he's going to be charged for negligence . Within another instance , if he steps up and tries to protect his kids , now they're looking for other reasons to poke at this guy .
Parents today are under a deal of great pressure and a lot of people don't realize that Parents are doing the very best they can . So sometimes , if we allow way for reasonableness and these matters , then it might make a better level or way for students in the future .
But if you isolate the parents and you make them feel bad , even if they're trying to do the right thing and it's not coming out in the best of ways , then that's where the problem starts to really take off .
Parents are humans , just like us , and so , no , I'm not saying that he was 100% right in connection with what he was doing , but what I am saying is that everyone has a breaking point and at some point , if you continue to push and push and push and push , eventually someone is going to get hurt .
Now this follow up story , very unique in its kind and it just goes to show you just how much people really pay attention to one another . You know , years ago your neighbor was very , very in your business . I'm going to just be flat out neighbors used to be in people's business , but today , sometimes you don't even get to see your neighbor , why ?
Most of the time they're working . Most of the time , if you do see your neighbor , they don't want to talk to you . But in this particular story , this librarian decides to put that theory to the test . Middle school librarian wears same dress for 100 straight days . We're going to Owensboro , kentucky .
Katie Albers has been a middle school librarian in Kentucky for 14 years . When she saw an ad for a clothing company's challenge to wear one of their dresses for 100 straight days , she decided to write her own story . This challenge spoke to me , but I was hesitant to try it because it's a little crazy , she said .
On her birthday , albers decided to start the challenge and wore the same red dress for 100 days in a row . Since her job as a librarian isn't very physically demanding , she said it wasn't necessary to wash the dress every day , but she did clean it during the three month period as needed . I mostly spot cleaned , she said .
Then I washed it every five to seven days for a good full wash . Thanks to her creative accessorizing , none of her coworkers even noticed the lack of variety in her wardrobe . Usually she tried to spice up the outfit by putting on a cardigan or a shirt over the dress to repurpose it into a different look .
Almost 40 days into her challenge , albers decided to break the news to her closest friend , stacey Folkerson , who was also a librarian at the same school . Folkerson said she was shocked to hear Albers had been wearing the same dress for over a month , since she works near her all day , every day . She's crazy .
She said that's what I thought , but I thought how did I miss 38 days ? They took the rest of the staff from the middle school more than two weeks later to catch on as well . Soon Folkerson said the whole school was in on it . Once they realized the days , they'd say Katie , what day is it ? Or does she still have the dress on ? Stacey Folkerson said .
Albers said the whole thing has made her reconsider everything she owns . I don't need so many options . They're just really taking up space . She said it was really nice to remember that . You just need a few nice things that you can mix and match and that's pretty good .
Albers received a $100 gift card to the clothing company called Wool and for participating in their challenge . She says she's considering entering another 30 day challenge the company offers next . Well , I'm going to be flat on , honest . I'm nowhere near as modest as this librarian here . I'm not going to wear anything for 38 days straight , let alone 100 .
However , I do appreciate her view on simplicity . I know materialism is thriving in today's world and so the fact that someone is willing to undergo such a challenge to put themselves to a new standard of living . I think that's pretty cool in itself .
We definitely enjoyed that story and we appreciate all of the things that were expressed in it in connection with what's going on in the librarian's life in Kentucky . Here is our next story . We're now sliding back into that realm of school violence , anger , frustration and rage . Large fight erupts following middle school basketball game in Minneapolis .
Minneapolis police are trying to determine what ignited a fight inside a middle school gymnasium that eventually spilled out into the street , involving up to 200 people . The incident happened just after 7.15pm Wednesday at Sullivan Steam School , 3128th Street .
Officers told Minneapolis police that the altercation started in the gym following a basketball game and then moved outside . Officers from MPD , metro Transit and Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and State Patrol responded to the scene , broke up the fight and asked people to leave the area .
It is estimated that up to 200 adults and children were involved in the altercation . No serious injuries were reported and police say no arrests were made . An investigation into the incident continues . Police say it does not appear that Thursday's fight is related to one that erupted Tuesday at North Community High School .
A statement from the Minneapolis Public Schools confirms that an altercation broke out during the final minutes of a girls basketball game between North and Henry , involving players and students from opposing teams . The district says play was suspended and security personnel responded to the scene .
North and Henry High schools are working towards bringing students from both teams together to repair harm to the community . No further details in connection with this story .
The interesting thing that you'll find in connection with school games , school activities , is that people aren't as reasonable or as prone to open agreement as they used to be , so you can anticipate that when you're involved in some of these circumstances , there are going to be altercations .
Instead of waiting for something to happen or there to be a mass brawl , why not up security ? Why not look for ways to be able to minimize the crowd ? For example , in some areas , they will not allow a certain amount of persons to come to a game to avoid problems , altercations , traffic buildup , etc .
All of those things can lead a person or persons to a situation in which they lose their patience , give way to wrath and then they end up fighting on the street .
We wish you guys all the best in Minneapolis and we hope that this is going to be resolved in a swift and clear manner and that you guys are able to continue your school sports as the time progresses . Here's our follow up A 17 year old student in custody after sexual assault inside Anandale High School
¶ Recent Incidents at High Schools
. A teenage girl was sexually assaulted at Anandale High School this week and a 17 year old fellow student was arrested for the crime on Friday . The teenage girl told a school resource officer that she had been raped inside the school .
According to a press release from Fairfax County Police , detectives determined that a teenage boy had assaulted her near a stairwell inside the school . The teenage girl was able to run away from her attacker , ending the assault . Fairfax Police said . When police officers talked to the 17 year old suspect , he made admissions to the assault .
Police said On Friday officers charged and arrested the suspect for sexual assault related felonies and the teen is now in custody at Fairfax County Juvenile detention center . No information about the students involved , both of whom are minors , was shared To the victim involved in this story . We want to send our dear support to you .
One of the things that I find to be unique in connection with this show and in connection with what's done here each and every week is just the innocence of the people involved in these stories . The article doesn't mention , or sources don't confirm , that these two knew each other .
It just seems that this dude had impulses , he had urges , he had desires and he wanted to unleash them on someone . The sad part about it is it could have been anyone . It's not a matter of liking someone anymore , it's not a matter of knowing someone anymore . It's just a matter of people not having that control to hold back their urges and their desires .
Because people are more prone to being selfish today , they unleash their desires . I'm glad that this student was able to get away , because this was a gripping story , to say the least . We wish you all the best in connection with this road of recovery .
Even though it wasn't a successful assault , as it were , for lack of better words , it still was something that made you feel uncomfortable and that itself is traumatic and it can cause issues in the future . We wish you all the best as you continue to move forward from this tragedy .
Here's our follow up story 12 year old girl arrested for threatening shooting at middle school , pinellas County , florida . This 12 year old girl was arrested on Friday for sending messages to two other students about conducting a school shooting at Azela Middle School .
According to deputies , the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office approached the girl and her mother , where the girl admitted to sending the messages through Instagram but claimed that she wasn't being serious . The girl was arrested and charged with written threats to kill or conduct a mass shooting . She was taken to the Pinellas Juvenile Assessment Center .
Following with information in connection with this story is encouraged to call 727-582-6200 . 727-582-6200 . We've talked about this a numerous amount of times on this show the girl who cried wolf , the girl who cried gun , the boy who cried school shooting or school bombing .
I don't know what it's going to take for young people to realize that today you cannot make those kind of jokes . Because of the nature , the dynamic of where we live , people are more prone to be serious when making those threats than playing .
I think it's safe to say that right now we are beyond the playing phase of life , that people are at the point where they're tired , they're upset , they're annoyed and they're ready to take action and move forward . And that's the sad thing about these stories .
Maybe the child was playing , but now look at the consequence of her actions and that's the biggest thing that we have to consider and that's being considered by the police today when such threats are made . Here's our follow up story guys . Two arrested at Shaker Heights High School on Thursday .
Two individuals were arrested at Shaker Heights High School Thursday after a fight Principal Eric Julie said in a news release in the News 5 on Thursday . The school was put on a stay put Thursday . That included the involvement of security personnel .
The two arrested were a 19 year old man and a 16 year old boy and they were not students at the high school and gained access through a door after searching the perimeter with two students . Julie said Julie got into a fight with an 18 year old student , shaker Heights Police said .
Julie said the two were stopped by security monitors and arrested by Shaker Heights Police . Shaker Heights High School in the Innovative Center for Personalized Learning will have classes rather than cease education . There is no further information in connection with this particular story , except that once again you see teenagers going wild .
A lot of people at this point are asking where are your parents ? Where are the parents doing ? How are the parents protecting their students from these circumstances ?
And the sad part about it is the parents may not be doing much , but when it comes to protecting a child , when it comes to being a parent , as was mentioned before , you need to be active , you have to be productive as a parent or you're never going to reach your child .
And if you believe everything that your child says , which could have been the case with these two students , then they end up getting into mischief and that's something that these parents are going to have to live with .
We know that both boys have been arrested and it's a waste of a future when it's just things that could have been prevented , that these young boys get involved in Our next story again dealing with gun presence . Parents react after a loaded gun found at Onida Middle School . It's connected .
In New York , onida Middle School staff made a terrifying discovery On Monday a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun . Staff located the gun in a locker belonging to a 13-year-old student . Lieutenant Ryan McCorron , with the Connected Police Department , said the concerns started Monday afternoon during school hours . Staff became aware of an individual at the school .
A student , a 13-year-old , was acting somewhat suspicious . According to staff said Macaron , onida Middle School does not have metal detectors . However , community engagement officers from the Connected Police Department were present . Those officers secured the weapon and arrested the student . No one was hurt .
The student faces three felony charges , including criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds , criminal possession of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree . The sad part about this story is it's one of those things where it could have been . It was so close to what it could have been .
The fact that the police were able to swiftly intervene that was phenomenal . But still these children are going to be concerned or fearing for their lives . Police say the investigation is ongoing and additional arrests could be made . 13 years old . When I was 13 years old , I could not imagine bringing a gun to school .
I still had a lot to learn about this world . I had no reason to be angry , but today , 13-year-olds go through a lot more than I did at my time . I'm not going to justify why this kid may have felt as though they needed to bring a gun to school , but let's just say it was for something like bullying .
At what point does someone step in and say , hey , we need to do better with the kids in our school systems ? At what point does someone say , hey , you know what ? We need to talk to them , make a concentrated effort , we need to keep them busy , we need to increase school activities ?
No one thinks that way , and if no one is thinking that way , then why would a student feel inclined to think that way ?
The sad part about it is it's more prevalent in the school systems than not prevalent , and it's very difficult when you have to face the reality of the circumstances and you come to recognize and realize that some of these things are just going to continue on and on and on until someone steps in .
It's not going to be every school , of course , but certain things are just going to continue on and on and on and it's just very , very sad to have to bring these stories to you guys each and every single week .
But I know that for those of you who are at these schools , those students here who are tuning into this podcast who are giving me shoutouts that's my school . I know that you guys can overcome this and you guys will be just fine as a result .
Here's our next story Putnam City Schools a student arrested after weapon discharge in bathroom at Hefner Middle School .
¶ School Safety and Addressing Racial Slurs
We're going down to Oklahoma City . A student was arrested after a weapon was discharged and found Friday morning at Hefner Middle School in Northwest Oklahoma City .
Putnam City Schools officials said in a news release that the school along North MacArthur Boulevard near West Wilshire Boulevard was briefly placed on lockdown after a student discharged a weapon while on campus . District officials said the student entered the campus through the main entrance at 7-eleven am on Friday and the weapon was discharged at 7-thirtysix am .
The school was placed on lockdown just seconds later . According to Putnam City officials , authorities detained the student around 7-forty-two am and they determined there was no active threat to others . Putnam City Schools officials said they confirmed the student was alone in the bathroom when the weapon was discharged . No injuries have been reported .
The student cooperated with school administration and police , and the district says the motivation behind the incident cannot be determined at this time . Information about the student has not been released . So now they're starting to become this pattern in which students are bringing these guns to school .
Administrators don't know as to why they're bringing the guns to school , and the thing that I'm really focused on here is it's got to be some sort of bullying , it's got to be some type of anxiety or depression that's moving these young people to want to readily bring firearms to these schools , and it's just after a while it just becomes this repetitive theme with
these young people . And so if the schools are going to be frivolous , or if they're not going to be as caring with these situations , then it's going to lead to dire consequences . So what can you do ?
I know now that they have a lot of gun drills and people will make jokes while you're doing these shooting drills , but the persons who are doing the shootings are the ones that are on those very drills , because these are students now shooting up schools , bringing weapons to schools .
There has to be some other area of caution that the school can take , or even parents . I know many parents have made mention that they rather homeschool , because there's a line or standard that needs to be set .
Every school district has their different way of dealing with things , based on their area , their environment , their circumstance , but someone has to set that fine line to say , hey , this is what all schools should be doing in connection with protecting our students from school shooting , and then this is what's not going to be done , because if you leave so many
hands in the pot of soup , then it definitely begins to alter the taste . I know that it's not going to be an easy process , but it's something that's definitely going to be necessary . Here's our follow up story Loretle Elementary School loses beloved teacher to unexpected death .
Loretle Elementary School in Oakland announced the loss of a fourth grade teacher , john Willey a Suji , who passed away in November . Many of a Suji students said his classroom was a place of joy and laughter . Student Sharon Lee penned a letter to Mr Suji's parents . My teacher was really supportive . He would always encourage us to never give up .
He was caring and helped people . He would always check in with us during work and he loved to dance and sing . A Suji was born in Chicago and grew up in Chino Hills near Los Angeles in Nigeria . He was the first African American associated student president at Fullerton Community College .
He later transferred to UC Davis , earning a bachelor's degree in dramatic arts . A Suji later received a master's degree in education at the former Mills College . He began teaching in 2016 .
The article doesn't go on to express just what happened in connection with the loss of Mr Suji , but from this podcast we want to extend the deepest and heartfeltest condolences to the family and for you , dear students . Mr Suji seemed like a cool teacher and that is such a rarity today .
There are not that many teachers out there who really care , who really want to see the students succeed and who really love the kids .
And it takes a great deal of courage for a teacher to put themselves out there like that , because everything is looked at as grooming , everything is looked at as weird , everything is looked at as strange in connection with someone trying to genuinely care about another person .
But because caring and loving someone is just so deranged or so foreign in connection with the world we live in today , then teachers like this can easily be brushed under the rug or pushed aside .
So it's nice that Mr Suji is getting that recognition that he needs , or that recognition that he deserved , as a teacher who put himself out there and tried his best to connect with his students . We wish you all the best and we express just our love for you guys , and we really appreciate being able to cover this story on behalf of Mr Suji .
Guys , our final story of the night . We reached that final part of the episode that makes all things amazing and just wraps it up into this little tiny box with a bow on top of it . Elementary school warns parents about student racial slurs .
Students at an elementary school in Ottawa are being asked to speak to their children about respect and kindness because primary age students had used racial slurs . Monday's weekly newsletter , emailed to parents at Conaut Public Schools on Hintonburg , stated that students used the slurs against one another on two occasions before the New Year break .
The targets were harmed by the slurs , the email said , and so were students who overheard them . It's very sad to hear what's happening , said Willis Kaganye as he dropped off his son Wednesday morning . Kaganye and his family recently moved to Ottawa from Uganda and his son only started attending Conaut this week .
It's very good to get the parents involved and send us those emails saying Kaganye . I encourage every parent to take part in this and take it very seriously .
He added that while he's grateful the school investigated the incidents , the hurt has already been felt , so he's hoping the board in the school will work harder to reduce to zero the number of incidents involving racism . The Ottawa Carlton District School Board , which oversees Conaut Public Schools , provided a written statement about the incidents at CBC .
The OCDSB added the school staff supported the affected students . The sad part about this is that students are not getting this just from themselves . We can all blame social media until we're blown to the face .
We can all make up excuses as to where the students could have gotten it from , but generally , these are some things that children hear in their home environment . These are things that are repeated by students from their families . It doesn't necessarily have to be parents .
It could be a cousin or an uncle , but these are the things that students are hearing in their homes . So you're writing the letter to inform the parents , and that's phenomenal , because the school is recognizing that that's where it starts . The best way that this can be controlled or taken care of is through the parents .
We hope that the parents are willing to be in the mood to parent their kids and to guide them away from such harmful speech , because if they say that to the wrong person , they could end up paying with their lives or dealing with some sort of physical altercation or assault .
