Money Management for Young People

Speaker 1

Guys , welcome back to another episode of RED . It's the everyday podcast for the everyday people and , as always , I am your host , Rashawn Jr , bringing you all school news each and every single week . Now , guys , today's date is Friday , May 31st . That means that there are just three weeks left of the physical school year .

Well , for me personally , our kids get out of school June 21st and , as a school bus driver , I am eager to begin my summer , and so it's going to be nice to return to the summer camp that I work at and be able to continue to share with you guys all of the movie reviews for the hottest movies this summer .

So the RAD podcast school news segment will take a little summer break , and then we'll be back with you guys in September for season number four giving you all school news . Now , you notice that at the beginning of each episode now there is a link , a green link , that says hey , we love feedback , et cetera . Click that link and send us a text .

We love to hear how these stories are affecting you and how they're benefiting you and your personal family . So let us know what you think of these stories and how they're going to continue to benefit you and your family as we move forward throughout the fourth season . The theme for our discussion of this particular episode is how can I manage my money ?

How often do you feel that you don't have enough money to spend ? Would you say never , sometimes , frequently . How often do you buy items that you really can't afford ? Would you say never , sometimes or frequently ? Here's another question how often do you buy something you don't need just because it's on sale ?

Never , sometimes or frequently Does it seem that you never have quite enough money to spend ? If you could get your hands on more , you could buy that game you want . If only your wages were higher , you could buy those shoes you need .

Or you may face the same dilemma as does Joan , who says sometimes my friends invite me to do things socially that are expensive . I want to be with my friends having fun . Nobody wants to say sorry , I can't afford to go . Well , rather than fret about the money that you don't have , why not learn to manage the money that does pass through your hands ?

You could wait until you leave home to learn how to manage money . But think would you jump out of an aircraft without first learning how to use a parachute ? True , a person might be able to figure it out while hurtling to the earth . However , how much better , though , if he learned the basic principle of using the device before jumping out of the door .

Well , in a similar sense , the best time for you guys to learn money management is while you're at home , before the harsh financial realities of life confront you . Money can be for a protection . Money can be for a protection . However , it can only be a protection if you learn how to control your spending . So how are you going to be able to do so ?

Well , we're going to break this topic down into three subtopics number one learn the basics . Number two recognize the challenges . And number three take control . Learn the basics . Have you ever asked your parents to explain what's involved in maintaining your household ?

For example , do you know how much it costs to provide light heat water each month , or how much it costs to run a car , buy food or pay the rent or mortgage ? Remember , you help incur those bills , and if you leave home , you'll be the one who has to pay those bills . So you might as well know how big your bills are likely to be .

Ask your parents if you can see some of the household bills and then listen closely as they explain how they budget for them . Here's a second thing Recognize the challenges . Admittedly , controlling your spending is easier in theory than in practice , especially if you live at home and receive an allowance or earn money from a job . But why is that ?

Because your parents are likely paying most of the bills . As a result , a large percentage of your money may be available for you to spend at will , and spending money can be fun . However , in doing so , a problem is likely to arise , Especially if your peers are pressuring you to spend more money than you'd like to .

Elena 21 says this Among my peers , shopping has become a major form of entertainment . When I'm out with them , there seems to be an unwritten rule that you must spend money if you're going to have any fun .

Well , true , it's natural that you may want to fit in with your friends , but ask yourself am I spending money with my friends because I can afford to do so or because I feel I have to ? Many people spend money in an attempt to boost their reputation with friends and associates . They try to impress others with what they have rather than who they are .

This tendency can cause real financial problems for you , especially if you have a credit card . So how can you be able to prevent this unnecessary spending ? How can you manage your money as a young person and even for us individuals who are maybe living at home or out of the home ?

Rather , Take control Instead of maxing out your credit card or spending your whole paycheck on one night out . Why not try Elena's solution ? When I go out with my friends , she says , I plan ahead and calculate a limit to my spending . My pay goes straight into my bank account and I take out only the amount I need for that outing .

I also find it wise to go shopping only with those of my friends who are careful with their money and who will encourage me to shop around and not buy the first thing that I see . Here are some suggestions that will be able to help follow Elena's advice .

Alanis advice Keep track of your purchases and carefully match them to your monthly statements to be sure that you're charged only for purchases you made . Pay your credit card bill promptly . If possible , pay it in full . Be very cautious about giving your credit card number and expiration date over the phone or online .

Avoid using your credit card as a means of obtaining quick cash . Cash advances usually incur a high interest rate . Never lend your credit card to anyone , not even a friend . Now one might ask , but wouldn't simply having more money solve all your spending problems ? Not likely .

In order for you to be able to manage your money , it's not contingent on the amount you want to make sure that you learn to control your spending , because if you were to get more money , then you would just end up spending more money , so that wouldn't improve your situation . Ask yourself how much money did I spend during the past month ?

What did I spend it on ? Not sure . Here's how to take control of your spending before your spending takes control of you . Number one keep a record For at least one month . Record the amount of money you receive and the date you receive it . Describe each item you buy and the amount it cost .

At the end of the month , add up the amount received and the amount spent . Number two make a budget . In the first column in your chart that you're going to make , list all income you expect to receive in a month . In the second column , list how you plan to spend your money . Use the entries in your record as a guide .

As the month progresses , write in the third column the amount you actually spend on each of the planned expenses . Also , record all unplanned spending . Number three adjust your habit . If you're spending more than you anticipated on some items and are accumulating debt , adjusting your spending habits will be able to help you pay your debts and stay in control .

Money can be useful if used to a proper degree . In fact , in most cultures , making and managing money is an important part of life , but try to keep a balanced attitude . Money has its place , but it's not everything , says a youth named Matthew . So here's something to think about . Here's a tip Make a list of what to buy before you go shopping .

Bring only the amount of money you need and limit your purchases to items on the list . Here's a fun fact If you have a balance of $2,000 in your credit card with an interest rate of 18.5% and you make only the minimum payments , it will take you 11 years to pay off your debt and will cost you an extra $1,934 in interest .

So , to avoid falling into the pitfalls that so many people have become privy to today , make an action plan . I control my spending . Buy Before I buy something with a credit card . I will . What I would like to ask my parents about this subject is .

Keep in mind , guys , that when you learn to manage your money , you not only benefit yourself , but you benefit your family and , as a result , you'll be in a position to help your parents , to see that you're striving to be a responsible adult and , if you are someone that's living out of the home , you'll be able to manage your bills in a fine and unique way

. Our first story for this evening is in the state of New Jersey , my home state . New Jersey special education teacher accused of inappropriately touching elementary school boys . Additional charges have been filed against a special education teacher from Philadelphia accused of inappropriately touching several elementary school students .

Inappropriately touching several elementary school students , Vincent Root , a 50-year-old teacher at Chatworth Elementary School in New Jersey , was charged with 14 counts of sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child .

Investigators say Root was first charged in 2023 after a student came forward and accused Root of inappropriately touching him during the previous school years . The investigation found that the alleged assault happened in school , in the classrooms , over several years , and all the victims were boys .

Prosecutors say Root entered a guilty plea at his arraignment appearance last week and is free pending trial . Authorities has asked anyone who believes they were victimized by root to contact the Burlington County prosecutor's office .

School Incidents

Unfortunate , again , circumstances developing in the school environment where a teacher is harming children despite the fact that they're supposed to be the very ones helping them . We wish you guys all of the best there at Chatsworth Elementary School and for you parents , continue to strive to be there for your children as best as your circumstances allow .

Our follow-up story Elementary school students struck by vehicle in Fairfield . We're now in Fairfield , Connecticut , as our location . Fairfield police say an elementary school student was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street on their way to a bus stop Wednesday morning .

Police said the collision occurred around 8 45 am in the area of Nicholas Avenue and First Street . The child was transported to a hospital with minor injuries , according to police . Police said the collision was witnessed by several students on a nearby school bus along with other bystanders .

Because of this , police said school counselors and additional support staff are available for any students wanting emotional support . The Fairfield Police Department crash investigation unit is investigating . Preliminary determinations found speed was not a factor in the crash and it appears to have been an unfortunate accident .

It's very nice to know that the student has minor injuries and that they are going to make a well in speedy recovery and we know that the police are going to continue to be diligent in connection with this story . Sometimes bus drivers are not as aware as they should be . I know as a school bus driver driving in the state , the city of Newark .

It can be difficult at times because people are just so unaware . But we're going to continue to follow up on this story if anything should progress , and we wish the student a well recovery . We're going to continue to follow up on this story if anything should progress , and we wish the student a well recovery .

We're glad to know that they're doing just fine there in Fairfield , Connecticut . Our follow-up story , Our location now is Kentucky . A Kentucky high school allegedly withheld a graduate's diploma when the student went off script during his graduation speech to preach his belief in Jesus .

Micah Price received the green light to praise Jesus Christ in his commencement speech at Campbell County High School in Alexandria , Kentucky , on May 24th , but followed his address with urging other Christians to stand up . But followed his address with urging other Christians to stand up .

"'class , before another word leaves my mouth , I must give the honor , the praise and the glory to my Lord and Savior , Jesus Christ' Price said to a packed Truist arena at Northern Kentucky University .

His orientation received resounding applause from the audience before he continued with his holy message" who , in his very words , tells us he is the light , he is the way , the truth and the life ?

Class anyone in the audience today , I'm here to tell you that if you don't have any of those things in your life and can't seem to find the answer , then my Lord , Savior , is your answer . When Price shifted his prepared remarks , school officials weren't pleased with his off-script moment and confronted the graduate .

After the ceremony , the school reprimanded Price and denied him his diploma . After everything transpired , this video of his speech . Mr Price's speech was posted on TikTok . Was posted on TikTok . The update in connection with this story .

The school district had allowed Price to thank his Lord and Savior , Jesus Christ , before telling him to read off the pre-approved script .

Off-programmed choices such as speech signs and caps in support of any cause or religion , injecting inappropriate language or political election statement could lead to something other than this outpouring of Christian faith , said Superintendent Wilson .

Price claimed that he had all the preaching to his classmates in the script but was told to take it out before it was approved . Price told his TikTok followers that he had no bad blood with Campbell County or the principals , as they were just doing their job .

He also took full responsibility for the incident , saying he was going against school policy because he serves a higher power Price received his diploma on Wednesday after a long holiday weekend . Nice to know that he was able to receive that diploma in connection with his speech . Our next story is on the bit of a tragic note .

We extend our warm condolences to the families of this individual here whom is in this story . Ross High School student killed in early morning crash in Morgan Township . Our location is Butler County , Ohio . Ross High School student killed in early morning crash in Morgan Township . Our location is Butler County , Ohio .

A Ross High School junior was killed early Sunday morning in a crash in Morgan Township . Ross High School principal , Brian Martin , announced in an email to students that 17-year-old Brianna Zirinis died . The crash happened around 2.30 am along Cincinnati Brookville Road near Scott Street and Alert New London Road in Morgan Township .

The Butler County Sheriff's Office said Dispatch told us these are all very rural roads . The Butler County Sheriff's Office said the crash only involved the vehicle Zyrnakis was in , which was being driven by a 16-year-old boy . The boy was treated at the scene but not taken to a hospital . The Sheriff's Office said Martin said Ross local schools will be providing support to students and staff in the coming days . Counselors will be at the high school this past Tuesday , May 28th , from 1 to 3 pm .

Martin said Some have mentioned that Brianna was a powerful light in their school , known for her kindness , intellect and her sense of humor .

Tragic Events in Various Communities

We're so sorry to hear about her loss . It's not easy to deal with a loss that's so sudden and so unexpected , to deal with a loss that's so sudden and so unexpected . But as you guys continue to rally together as a group of loved ones , a community , you can be able to overcome this grief so that it does not in effect overcome you .

We wish you guys all of the best there in Ohio . In this following story , a graduate is facing a very difficult circumstance not being able to enjoy that beloved moment with their peers because of a school issue . High school student with disability felt robbed after having to sit in audience for graduation . We're now in Tennessee .

A Tennessee student with disabilities is speaking out after commencement , left a bitter taste in her mouth . Kennedy Lee says that she and two other graduating Greenfield High School students were relegated to sitting in the bleachers with the audience instead of with their peers at their May 17th graduation ceremony .

At their May 17th graduation ceremony she is suffering from POTS as well as a functional neurological disorder , and it made her emotional because future students should not be treated this way . She feels as though this is going to be a standard moving forward .

In a statement shared with People County , Director of Schools Jeff Couples said that all district graduation ceremonies are planned to ensure the safety of all participants . Lee says that up until the last day of classes she assumed she would have a normal graduation with the rest of the students . Then her mother received a call from the principal .

She told us that we would be using a wheelchair and we would not be able to walk and we would not be seated with our classmates . Lee recalls Of course my mother was very upset about hearing this . I was very upset about hearing this , and so we did what we could to do to fight it .

On May 16th the school held a graduation practice and Lee told the principal that she received a doctor's note that cleared her to be able to walk during the event . In turn , she says the principal told her we would see how practice goes .

So from my understanding I thought that seeing how practice goes meant that I would get to practice graduation just like everybody else , she says , but I was very , very wrong .

Afterwards Lee says they were told they would have to sit in the bleachers for the actual ceremony and couldn't walk to pick up their diplomas without a nurse present and despite her best efforts , that's exactly what happened on graduation day . Lee says that she did consider boycotting the ceremony but ultimately decided against it .

There's no further information here in connection with this story . But wow , what a difficult emotional challenge that this young student is going to be robbed of . You only graduate once and so because the school wasn't able to be reasonable with her in connection with this circumstance . It will leave some trauma in connection with her life .

We wish you all the best there in Tennessee and we encourage you guys , the Lee family , Lee and mom to continue to hold tight to hope and strive your best to improve things for the future . We wish you all the best again .

Our follow-up story very unique circumstances reminds me a lot of the circumstances that we deal with on our school buses as school bus drivers . People are not aware just how a lack of parenting can really truly severely affect a child .

Our headline reads this way Gangs of youths on bicycles are wreaking havoc in downtown Plymouth , and police have issued a warning to the young offenders and their parents , who may also now face consequences for their child's unlawful behaviors .

Since April 1st , police in the popular tourist destination have responded to more than 25 calls involving juveniles on bikes causing havoc downtown and in the North Plymouth area , police said in a Facebook post on Thursday . These youngsters are rolling 5 to 10 deep in their middle school bicycle gangs and have no regard for traffic laws or anything .

Police said we have responded after being called for . Kids riding in the middle of Route 3A , swerving at cars , harassing and swearing at pedestrians , fighting , kicking at doors on houses , lighting fireworks off while riding the bike , riding at geese , purposefully damaging flowers , assaulting two people on the bike path and lots of middle fingers being thrown .

Police added the behavior is dangerous , unnecessary and unacceptable . Police said . Responding officers have interacted with these kids and they give us the middle finger as well . Police added . We have spoken to their parents and , believe it or not , some of the parents don't seem to care either .

Officers now cracking down on the problem will also involve the parents of the young offenders . From here on out , this is what's going to happen If an officer notices a bicycle violation from any of these suspect youths , a $20 citation will be issued for the offense to the parent of the offender .

Police said we are also going to impound the bicycle for 15 days . Offenders over the age of 16 will get a ticket . Police added . Bicyclists have to follow all of the same rules as motor vehicles . Police said the enforcement is allowed under state laws . The juvenile bicycle gang thing was fun while it lasted , but starting today , police said enough is enough .

Police issued the warning during national travel and tourism week . Downtown plymouth draws tens of thousands of tourists during the summer months . This is a developing story .

Any other information that comes through we'll be able to update you guys how unfortunate it is that we're living in a world or in an environment in which parents do not want to parent their children . They allow these children to do any and everything that they want , not realizing that at every turn you're causing damage to your child's life .

We wish you all the best there in Plymouth and we really , really are nice , are happy to hear that the police are not taking this with a violent approach , because they could take this in an entirely different direction . Our follow up story Sugar Mill Elementary student remembered outgoing little girl . Very sweet . We're now in Port Orange , Florida .

The Port Orange community gathered to grieve the loss of a fourth grader who died after she was hit by an SUV outside of her school last week . One week before the end of the school year , Sugar Mill Elementary School students , teachers and community members came together at First United Methodist Church of Port Orange on Saturday to remember the fourth grade girl .

According to Port Orange police , the girl was riding her bike in a crosswalk outside the school's entrance when she was struck by the driver of an SUV who had just finished dropping off another student . Police identified the driver as a 70-year-old woman from New Smyrna Beach . The woman was interviewed by police but no criminal charges have been filed at this time .

Pending the investigation , the girl was taken to the hospital where she died . Police said Most have commented that she was very outgoing . She was a beloved friend and she was very mature for her age , she always asked a lot of questions and she was truly , truly respectful . She always asked a lot of questions and she was truly , truly respectful .

Suzy Rodriguez , the minister who organized the vigil , said she hopes it helps the community to come together and know that they're not alone . Sources have commented that there is no crossing guard located at the crosswalk where the deadly crash happened , and parents would like to see that changed .

Unfortunately , though , police said it's not up to them , but rather the organizing or putting the crossing guard at a specific location is on the responsibility of the evaluation committee , and so they are awaiting a response from them on this matter .

How tragic it is that this young girl had to lose her life because of unforeseen occurrences , but had something been put in place , would the outcome have been the same ? To the families who is related to this dear one , please accept our condolences and our heartfelt love for you .

We wish you the best as a family , as you continue to progress and deal with this very devastating tragedy . Family , as you continue to progress and deal with this very devastating tragedy . A GoFundMe has been set up in connection with the loss of this dear girl , and , as of Tuesday morning , nearly $9,000 have been raised for her cause .

And another unique , tragic accident . Here's our follow-up story Indiana high school student dies in single vehicle crash . We're now in Hendricks County . A Cascade High School student died in a crash Monday morning . The crash occurred near the 75th block of South County Road 550 West , north of Stilesville .

According to the Hendricks County Sheriff's Office , around 4.30 am deputies were dispatched to an area on a report of a crash into a utility pole .

Police said preliminary investigation indicates a Silver Ford Taurus was traveling northbound of County Road 550 West when it was driven off the roadway at a slight curve the vehicle struck a utility pole , causing it to roll . The driver of the vehicle , 18-year-old Sile Sullivan of Danville , was transported to the hospital and later died from his injuries .

There were no passengers in the vehicle . Sullivan was set to graduate from Cascade High School on May 31 . Graduate from Cascade High School on May the 31st . How devastating and tragic . Two students killed from our previous story , one in a tragic accident and here another tragic accident . We send our condolences to the Sullivan family .

Please continue to deal with the grief head on and do not allow it to overtake you . We wish you the best from RED Podcasting and do not allow it to overtake you . We wish you the best . From RED Podcasting . Our next story is on a very , very gruesome note Yadkinville Elementary School teacher's assistant charged with assaulting juvenile on campus .

Officers say A teacher's assistant is facing child abuse charges , according to officers with the Yadkinville Police Department , On May 23rd , Yadkinville officers received a phone call from administrators with Yadkin County Schools about an incident involving a juvenile being assaulted . Officers said the assault occurred on campus at Yadkinville Elementary School .

During the investigation , evidence that the juvenile was assaulted by Ivy Palka , a teacher's assistant , was obtained . Pauka was charged with misdemeanor assault on a child under 12 and misdemeanor child abuse . On Tuesday , Pauka was served with a warrant for arrest and received a written promise to appear in court . Pauka is due in court on June 26 .

Pauka was a teacher's assistant at Yadkinville Elementary School from January 2020 to July 2022 . She resigned to work in another district before re-employing at the school in October 2023 . No further information . How gruesome and difficult it may be for parents to be able to digest the fact that administrators are abusing their children . So how can you cope ?

What can you do ? Speak up if you hear something . Say something if you know something . Protect your friends and yourself at all costs and strive to avoid being alone with any adult at the school in any school environment .

So you see , when you do those things you're able to avoid some of the dangers that come in connection with these persons that want to do you harm . We wish you all the best there . In connection with this story , here's our follow-up story . Student 16 tried to bring gun into Chester High School . We're now in the location of Chester , PA .

A Delaware County High School student was arrested after investigators say he tried to bring a gun into the school . On Tuesday the city of Chester Police Department said the 16-year-old Chester High School student tried to bring a pistol through the school's security checkpoint .

The student was detained by security staff and taken into custody by the school's resource officers . Investigators say no one was hurt during the incident . No charges were immediately reported . Just want to make mention to you students there at Chester High School that these things can be very , very scary .

But it's nice to know that the plan was foiled or whatever the student was attempting . But it does cause you to wonder what are some of these students thinking or reasoning , or if they're reasoning anything or thinking anything at all . The scariest times that we're living in today , find ways to protect yourself and continue to be aware of your surroundings .

That's very important as you guys traverse the school environment . Again , wishing you the best in connection with these frightening circumstances . Well , guys , we've reached the final two stories of episode number 39 , and what a privilege it has been to bring you this school news Another week . Summer is upon us and so we wish you guys a well summer .

School Safety and Racial Taunting

Shocking video shows students playing with BB gun outside Northwestern High School in Hyattsville . Young people captured in a shocking video could be seen playing with what looks like a gun outside a high school in Heightsville , Maryland .

The video shot by Telemundo44 shows what appear to be teenagers casually playing with a BB gun in some woods not far from the Northwestern High School campus . The video was captured after some community members raised safety concerns in the neighborhood . The video was captured after some community members raised safety concerns in the neighborhood .

At least one neighbor in a nearby townhouse complex voiced concerns that a hole in the fence between the new townhomes and Northwestern High has led to the area being used as a cut-through for students , causing problems that include crime . Despite the proximity to the high school , News 4 is not certain whether the video shows students .

The people in the video do appear to be teenagers . The video was taken at 1 pm during school hours . The video is disturbing and shows a group of young people handling the gun and , in one case , pointing the gun at each other . The weapon is black . From the distance at which it was shot , Nothing would indicate it is not a real gun .

Hyattsville police were called and officers took a 16-year-old into custody . News 4 did determine that the weapon was a BB gun . They said the case is being reviewed by the Prince George's County State's Attorney Office to determine whether charges will be filed . It is illegal to bring a BB gun onto school property .

However , because of where the incident occurred , it is difficult to say whether it took place on school property or right next to it . A community meeting was set up for next week at Hyattsville City Hall to address neighbors' safety concerns . Next week at Heightsville City Hall to address neighbor's safety concerns .

Frightening circumstances , Students just not rationalizing the consequences of your actions and just putting other people in very difficult and distressing circumstances . Our final story for the night . Jordan Elbridge Middle School halts reading of To Kill a Mockingbird after racist taunting . We're now in Jordan , New York .

An eighth grader from Elbridge is spending the rest of his school year at home after he says he experienced racism in his classroom . Trevor Ellingworth said it all started when his class began reading a novel . So many students across America read To Kill a Mockingbird , a story where racism in American history is a central theme .

Ellingworth was looking forward to starting it in class . He said I felt excited because I wanted to learn about the past and learn about things that I don't know yet . But over spring break in April , Trevor's mom , Melissa Ellingworth , says she received phone calls from his school concerned for his well-being .

As the class starts reading the book , Trevor said I was more worried about people talking behind my back or just making fun of my color , making fun of me due to what the book says . He says he watched the movie version before starting the book .

But when the teacher me due to what the book says , he says he watched the movie version before starting the book . But when the teacher read an introduction to the book , melissa says trouble started . One of the statements was the color of skin doesn't necessarily give you judgment on a person and a child yelled out during class in my son's class .

Uh , yeah , it does . And the teacher continued . She didn't intervene . She says that escalated to more racial comments directed at her son using the N-word . They were saying things like let's go back in time and whip you , and they were just using things from the book . It's not a joke , it's not anything to make fun of .

It's who somebody is and a part of them . They can't change it and you should just accept it , said Trevor . He is not returning to school because he doesn't feel safe there . His family is now looking at a new district for him to start high school . In the fall , CNY Central reached out to the Board of Education .

Board President Karen Guret sent a statement on behalf of the board . This statement just makes a claim that the board is interested in the success of the students and that they don't condone , or allege to condone , such behaviors . So here is a challenge . This boy now uneasy about returning to school .

Nothing really that the board can do in connection with the taunts , unless something physical takes place . It's very difficult being a student in high school today , but it was wise of the parents to just remove their son from the circumstances that he was in .

Sometimes it's just about us stepping back ourselves and not looking at the other persons to make that change .
