Binge Drinking

Speaker 1

Welcome back to another episode of RED . It's that everyday podcast for the everyday people and , as always , I am your host , rashaun Jr , bringing you school news each and every single week . Now , before we get into our show today , just want to extend a warm congratulations to the class of 2024 .

And now we know this time of year , guys , may 24th on a Friday , you guys are rushing toward graduation . You are eager to start your lives and you are eager to participate in prom , the graduation ceremony , the gift exchanges ceremony , the gift exchanges and all of the memories that come with your senior year .

So our theme in connection with episode number 38 , what's wrong with binge drinking , or what should you know about binge drinking ? How would you answer the following questions Do any of your peers engage in underage or binge drinking ? Have your peers ever pressured you to drink alcohol ? Have you ever been involved in binge drinking ?

Well , in order to identify the answer to either of those questions , you first have to understand what binge drinking is . Some define it simply as getting drunk . A report by the US National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism tried to be more specific .

It said that binge drinking is typically defined as consuming five or more drinks in a row for men and four or more drinks in a row for women . If you have been tempted to either drink to excess or to drink in spite of being under the legal age , you're not alone . Many youths abuse alcohol .

But ask yourself what do I really know about , why I want to drink and what effects alcohol can have on me ? For example , how would you answer these true or false questions ? Number one teens drink only because they like the taste of alcohol . Number two because they are younger and fitter , teens face fewer bad side effects from alcohol abuse than do adults .

Number three binge drinking can't kill you . Number four poor health is the only consequence of binge drinking . Let's consider that first true or false question Teens drink only because they like the taste of alcohol . The answer is false .

In an alcohol awareness survey taken in Australia , 36% of the young ones questioned said they drink primarily to fit in at social activities . Consider the second true or false question Because they are younger and fitter , teens face fewer bad side effects from alcohol abuse than do adults . The answer is false .

New research suggests that young drinkers are courting danger . Suggests that young drinkers are courting danger . Teens who drink excessively may be destroying significant amounts of mental capacity . This was an article in Discover magazine . Binge drinking can't kill you ? The answer false . Excessive amounts of alcohol deprive the brain of oxygen .

Vital bodily functions can begin to shut down . Symptoms may include vomiting , unconsciousness and slow or irregular breathing . In some cases , death can result . Our final point poor health is the only consequence of binge drinking ? The answer is false . If you become drunk , you make yourself more vulnerable to all kinds of assault , even rape .

At the same time , you might well become a danger to others , acting in a way that is completely out of character for you . Prom season is among us , and so how fitting it is that you're able to analyze just what's involved in connection with drinking .

Now , during school functions , they typically do not serve alcohol , but I know , in connection with senior prom for me and my peers , alcohol was served , but it was snuck in , of course , and some of the dangers that can come from being involved in underage drinking is it erodes your thinking faculties .

You're not able to reason on decisions or choices that you would make normally if you were not under the influence . So that leaves us with a question what choice will you make ? Will you simply follow your peers who abuse alcohol . What should you do if binge drinking has caught you in its snare ?

Well , the first thing that you can do is surround yourself with individuals who will help you to get the help that you need . First , admit that you have a problem . Find good associates that are going to help you to get rid of that problem , and try your best to be open and honest with those who truly love you .

One principle that comes to mind in connection with some of the dangers connected to binge drinking is a drunkard will come to poverty , it's a proverb , and there in that proverb , it makes mention that a person whom gives into a large amount of alcohol can waste not only their time and energy , but even monetary assets in striving to keep up with this struggling ,

or this habit , as it were . According to one US study , frequent binge drinkers were eight times more likely than non-binge drinkers to miss a class , fall behind in schoolwork , get hurt or injured and damage property . So have a plan in connection with what you will do if one of your peers offers you a drink .

Don't go down that path , because that path can literally derail your life . At the same time , be aware that if you are struggling with alcoholism and you are giving into those yearnings and cravings . There is a way for you to be able to get out . Surround yourself by good associates .

Seek the help from those who really love you , perhaps a parent , a guardian or even a trusted administrator at school that can help you to be able to break free from the chains of this habit .

If you do so , not only will you have a fruitful and beneficial life , but you'll also avoid the danger of mistakes that people make when they're under the influence of such a vice . Our first story this particular evening is in connection with a coach who may have said one comment too many .

Ct middle school track coach steps down after allegedly calling student a racial slur . We're now in Colchester . A track coach from William J Johnston Middle School in Colchester has stepped down after being accused of calling a black female student from Middletown a racial slur .

Colchester Public Schools told NBC Connecticut in a statement that students were singing an explicit song named Finito by Chief Keef , to which the coach responded with the words you are , the school said . The coach didn't realize she had offended anyone , feels terrible about it and decided to step down .

On Thursday afternoon the Connecticut Parents Union came together outside Middletown's Board of Education to discuss this incident . The student and her guardian were there along with the president of the Middlesex County NAACP .

Samuel said she was not only upset by the coach's actions , but also Middletown Public Schools for not letting the student's family know what happened in a timely fashion . This is Gwen Samuel , the president of the CT Parent Union .

As a black mother , I've never experienced anything like this and it really put me in a very uncomfortable and frustrating situation , said one parent . Colchester Public Schools also mentioned that the district will ensure that the team has adequate support to finish their season .

Nothing further in connection with this story other than the fact that Middletown Public Schools says they are still investigating how tragic it is when administrators refuse to acknowledge things that they may have done that could have hurt other individuals .

From time to time it can be a challenge in dealing with the youth of today , but there still is a measure of self-control that is going to be needed in order to meet these circumstances with success . We wish you all the best there in Colchester , connecticut , and we know that things will get better in the future .

School is almost wrapping up and coming to its conclusion . Our follow-up story New York City high school assistant principal busted for inappropriate contact with 15-year-old girl . An assistant principal of a Queens public high school was busted Wednesday for inappropriate contact with a 15-year-old student .

Cops and law enforcement said Michael Badu , a 52-year-old administrator at John Adams High School , allegedly rubbed the inner thigh of the female student on Monday . Police and the sources said Then on Tuesday , the assistant principal allegedly showed the same teen a video of himself having sex with someone else , while creepily telling her this could be you .

According to the sources , the student reported the adult's vile actions and he was taken into custody just after 10 am Wednesday at the Rockaway Boulevard School . Cops and sources said Badu was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and sexual abuse in the third degree . Police said this employee has been reassigned pending an investigation .

In our next story we still are continuing that same line of circumstance that develops between a teacher and a student . Severna Park Elementary School teacher charged with sexual abuse of a minor . We're now in Severna Park , maryland . An Ann Arundel County teacher faces dozens of charges involving sexual abuse of minors .

Dozens of charges involving sexual abuse of minors . According to charging documents obtained by 11 News , matthew Schlegel inappropriately touched as many as eight students on several occasions in his third grade math class at Saverna Park Elementary School . Police arrested Schlegel at his home on Thursday .

In total , he faces 36 charges that include sexual abuse of a minor and second-degree assault . Schlegel , 44 , of Saverna Park , is accused of abuse that dates back as far as August 2022 , based on several interviews with the victims in connection with an investigation that started in March , investigators said in March .

Investigators said , according to charging documents , the victims told investigators that Schlegel touched their private parts and other areas on more than one occasion . Schlegel was removed from his classroom and reassigned on March 15th as soon as the district learned of the allegations and a long-term substitute teacher took over on March the 18th .

Although an arrest has been made , child abuse unit detectives are asking anyone with information to call the tip line at 410-222-4733 or call the Anne Arundel County Police tip line at 410-222-4700 . Parents continue to be vigilant in dealing with these circumstances surrounding the heinous activity that goes on in school systems today , and children be vigilant .

If you see something , say something . Do not fear that you will not be heard because of speaking up about such unforeseen circumstances . We wish you all of the best down in Maryland . Our next story is on the international side of school news .

School Violence Incidents in the News

Two killed in elementary school knife attack in China . School knife attack in China . At least two people died and 10 others were injured at an elementary school in eastern China on Monday after being attacked by a knife-wielding suspect .

Authorities said A statement released by a police in the town of Wenfang in China's Jiangxi province said a 45-year-old female suspect was detained in connection with the incident at the local Mingd Elementary School . The woman , identified only by the last name Pan , allegedly carried out the attack with a fruit knife .

Authorities said she caused injuries to 12 people , two of whom were later declared dead after attempts to threaten them were unsuccessful , they said Four victims were said to have suffered non-life-threatening injuries , the police said , while six others suffered minor injuries while evading the suspect during the knife attack .

The victims were being treated at a local public hospital . State media reports said it was not immediately clear how many children were among the dead or injured . This continues to be a serious , serious problem in connection with schools today . Sources say the investigation is still ongoing , but this does not leave people feeling at ease .

More and more , not only in the United States but around the world , people are succumbing to acts of violence and are starting right there in the school systems . Parents , we continue to wish you the best as you strive to cope with the challenges in connection with school environment .

Today , our next story finds its way to us by means of a very , very unique topic . This is a body cam of footage Medina Elementary School psychologists found allegedly under the influence at work and that harmonizes nicely with our theme and connection with binge drinking . Medina , ohio , is our location .

19 News obtained new police body cam video on Saturday of the OVI arrest of a now former Medina Schools elementary school psychologist . Earlier this month Medina City Schools confirmed that district administrators suspected that a Northrop Elementary staff member was under the influence at work .

Medina police confirmed that staff member , identified as 34-year-old Brian Thompson , was arrested for OVI a short time later by Stowe Police . Thompson had a BAC of .342 , over four times the legal limit . The district said Thompson was placed on administrative leave immediately pending a full investigation . However , after the incident , thompson resigned his position .

According to the Medina Police report , school administrators asked Thompson if he was okay to drive . Thompson said yes , though he refused a breathalyzer and drove home .

Police say he got in his car and drove to his apartment in Stowe when Stowe police caught up with him he was spotted driving on State Route 91 and was still behind the wheel of his car in the parking lot of his apartment complex .

A Stowe officer can be heard asking Thompson , if you were too impaired to go to work , did you think it was the right thing to drive home ? The school psychologist argued that it was not alcohol but too many sleeping pills that were impacting his driving . I started a new sleep medication , a high dosage . I took 700 milligrams of Trazodone , thompson said .

The Stowe police officer asked why would he take five times the amount of the prescription ? And Thompson said it was because he had an argument with his girlfriend and he just wanted to pass out and go to sleep .

Officers eventually talked Thompson into doing several field sobriety tests and you can see in the video that the man is trying to walk a straight line , but he continues to stumble sideways , unable to put one foot right in front of the other . Ultimately , thompson was arrested by Stowe police .

He faces two counts of OVI and has since resigned his job with the Medina City Schools . The tragedies that come from the workload that school psychologists may have to deal with . It's not anything written in stone that these sort of persons can't succumb to becoming obsessed or even controlled by alcohol or being reliant on alcoholic beverages .

But it is nice to know that none of the children were injured in connection with this particular incident and we strive to wish you all of the best there in Ohio . In our follow-up story we find ourselves dealing with the uniqueness of a fifth grader whom is facing that same line of violence that was discussed from a few stories that we discussed earlier .

New Haven Elementary School staff confiscates knife from fifth grader . Officials say we're now in . New Haven . Police were called to a city elementary school on Wednesday after staff members confiscated a knife from a fifth grade student .

Officials said the school became aware of the knife after students reported to a staff member that one of their classmates had the weapon in his possession . According to a statement from New Haven public schools , officials said staffers then immediately brought the students to an area away from his peers and confiscated the knife . They said no one was injured .

School officials said the New Haven Police Department was called to the school , which officials did not identify . An investigation into the matter is ongoing . According to the statement , nothing further in connection with this incident , but scary times we are living in , students are continuing to become more and more involved in violence .

They are finding other means of dealing with their problems , and the sad truth about it is , in some cases , these individuals come from homes that are just not stable , and so we know , as time continues to progress , things are going to get relatively worse . You can just see that pattern of decline going on in the school system today .

However , continue to cope with it , guys . Talk to a trusted friend , strengthen your hope for whatever it is that you believe in , and continue to use the YouTube comment box to express yourself on these stories and let your words be heard in connection with the show . We wish you all of the best there in New Haven .

Our following story , again also accompanied by a video . This time we're now in Bristol Township . A dad details alleged school attack of kindergartner in a now viral video .

The father of a Bristol Township kindergarten student is alleging his son was seriously injured in an assault by a fourth grader with special needs who was not properly supervised , in a video that has gone viral since posted on Friday .

On Monday afternoon , bristol Township School District , the Bucks County Intermediate Unit and Bristol Township Police confirmed the incident is under investigation , steve Callahan , known by the TikTok handle Johnski , took to social media about what happened on May 16 at Keystone Elementary School on Tulip Avenue and Corridon .

The video has generated more than 1 million views as of Monday morning . In the video , the father alleges the district has provided little information and it has stonewalled his efforts to see surveillance footage of the incident , where the student allegedly pushed his five-year-old into a table , requiring the boy to be treated at the hospital .

On Monday morning , callahan declined comment until he spoke with his attorney . Bristol Township Police confirmed an investigation has been opened , but no further comment would be released . It's very , very unfortunate when parents have to deal with these uneasy circumstances .

It's unfortunate because you don't know when or how these things are going to touch or affect your personal life . You're not sure ever how close to home these things are going to hit . However , this father is doing the best that he can by being vigilant .

Now , it's true that the district and the police may not be able to respond to him as quickly as he would like , but he's still doing the best he can .

He's keeping proactive and he's really trying to protect his son at the end of the day , and so we wish you all the best there in Bristol Township and just to continue to keep that endurance going as best you can so you can be able to provide that support that your son needs , because overall in these stories , the child is the one whom is affected the most .

All In these stories , the child is the one whom is affected the most . This next story was an incredible , incredible story to shout out in connection with the show today .

Now , as someone whom is a resident of New Jersey , I will say that this kid he gets major props from me as a podcaster and a YouTuber , and the reason for that is because what he did was just so swag you wouldn't believe it for yourself . Bryce Harper helps a New Jersey high school student with prom-posal . We're now in Philadelphia .

Bryce Harper is used to playing first base for the Philadelphia Phillies , but he recently played wingman for a New Jersey high school student . So you have a nice New Jersey mashup and a Philly mashup as our location .

Jake Portello , a senior at Hayden Field Memorial High School , said he simply knocked on Bryce Harper's door and asked if he would help with his promposal . I knocked on his door . He seemed cool with it at first . Then he was like can I get your email so we can plan this out ? And as I was leaving , he was like why don't we do this right now ?

Jake told the Fantastic Sports Show on Monday . Video of the moment that has since gone viral on social media shows Jake and Bryce at the doorstep of his prom date , julia's house . Bryce takes the lead and asks the starstruck high school student if she will go to prom with Jake .

Julia didn't balk at the offer and excitedly said yes , before hugging both Harper and Jake . I wasn't expecting this . I thought it'd be something cool among my friends and people in my town and stuff . Jake said I didn't even expect Harper to open the door in the first place . Hayden Field Memorial High School senior Prom will happen June 14th .

I will tell you this , jake , that the fact that you were able to pull that off is something that Julia is going to remember for the rest of her entire life .

That is really the key in connection with high school right Making memories that are going to leave you feeling good for the rest of your life , not memories that are going to leave you feeling wasted , depressed and in circumstances that you did not anticipate or generally really want .

We wish you guys the best and we encourage you to be safe in connection with attending your prom this particular year . Our follow-up story is on a bit of a tragic note and to the families we do extend our warm , heartfelt condolences . To you , because these circumstances are truly never easy . It doesn't ever really go away , but it's like it stores itself in a filing cabinet and then , as you go through the months , the weeks and the years , the cabinet is opened , even when you don't want it to , perhaps through smells , music that your loved one enjoyed , even special food that they liked , or mannerisms that you may see in other individuals that they

This is another circumstance that continues to come up in the school system Unforeseen occurrences of gun violence . It's not something that is so foreign today .

In fact , it's not a matter of if it happens , but when it happens .

I'm glad to know , or we're glad to hear , that the 12-year-old is going to make a speedy recovery , but the trauma involved after that , that's where he's going to need the most comfort and it's commendable that the school is doing their part in order to bring comfort to all of those who were involved . We wish you the best at Alger Middle School .

Now , of course , we are going into graduation season . It's a time for all to celebrate their achievements and look longingly and fastly to their future . But nowadays , graduation is also becoming a serious cause for concern . Two arrested at Pueblo High School graduation were now in Tuckson , arizona .
