¶ Texting Manners and School Safety
Guys , welcome back to another episode of RED . It's the everyday podcast for the everyday people and , as always , I am your host , rashawn Jr , bringing you all school news each and every single week . Now , as you guys know , we are in the month of April , and so what that means is that RED will conclude its third season on the final day of most US schools .
So I usually use the school that I am driving for as a school bus driver , and this particular year , the last day of school for us is June the 21st , so that is going to be the final episode of season number three . Let me guys know what you think .
Please review the show on any podcast platform and let me know what you guys think about these stories that we've covered . Let me know what you guys think about the show tuning in those who have been with us all school year long and how these stories have affected you and possibly your families and friends and friends .
Our theme today , our theme for this particular episode , number 33 , is how to show texting manners . How to show texting manners . That is our theme . Here's a scenario You're talking face to face with a friend when you receive a text message . What would you do , or what should you do ? A read the text message while still talking to your friend .
B say excuse me to your friend and read the text message . C ignore the text message and keep talking to your friend . Does it matter which option you choose ? Well , the answer is yes , a , b or C . What you should know , texting one friend while talking to another is like playing your favorite sport without adhering to the rules of the game .
But these are my friends , you might say . All the more reason to be mannerly . Not that you have to become straight-laced and formal , but here's the fact of life , guys . If you are unmannerly with your friends , sooner or later they will not be your friends anymore .
When selecting the theme for this particular week's episode , it called to mind some of the challenges that add to school problems and dynamics . And one of the things that causes problems in the school dynamic today is the fact that students do not know when and how to take control over social media and text messaging . Well , why is that so ?
Why is that such a big theme for discussion ? Because people do not like to be treated rudely . Notice what a young woman named Beth says . She says Cell phone manners can be complicated .
However , there are several things that's going to be outlined in our discussion that's going to be able to help you as a young person and possibly help someone else to cultivate better texting manners and then forge strong and lasting bonds . What you can do Text only at appropriate times . Well , why is that important ?
Well , sometimes a person's received text messages really late at night . One man named Richard said that it's disturbing in his sleep . Now you guys may say , well , there's , do not disturb , etc . That it's disturbing in his sleep . Now you guys may say , well , there's , do not disturb , etc . Well , it may be good not to rely on such format of technology .
Now , why is that ? Because sometimes they don't work . Sometimes do not disturb is not , as I like to say , do not disturb proof . So be conscious of the time of day you're texting a person . Be mindful that certain text messages coming through at certain times of the day can come off as urgent . What's the second thing that you can do ? Check your tone .
Communication is carried by words , voice inflection , facial expression and body language . Unfortunately , most of these elements are missing when you text a person . So how can you compensate ? Use common courtesy , suggested a young woman named Jasmine , ask how are you and use words like please and thank you to accompany your text .
When you do this , it allows you to be able to communicate accurately and properly to whomever you're sending that text message to . Here's the third point Be discerning . If you are expecting an important message , it might be necessary to excuse yourself from a conversation . Often , though , you'll find that the text message can wait .
Your phone is still going to be there when your friend has finished talking this is what a 17-year-old named Amy says but your friend may not be there when you finish texting , and I myself can allude to that that when a person is engaged in their device and I'm trying to communicate with them audibly , I just walk away .
If their device is that much more important at the time that we're discussing matters , then I can catch you guys on the flip side , and sometimes , depending on what the nature of the discussion is , some people may not feel inclined to discuss that matter at a later time . Here's the fourth point Think before you hit the send button .
Might your text message be misunderstood ? Would emoticons help convey the idea ? A 21-year-old named Amber says that people get their feelings hurt and fights can even start because they take a light-hearted remark to be serious . So cell phone manners really , truly matter .
In fact , they are good qualities to cultivate in connection with maintaining and holding on to friendships .
You tuners , or you listeners , who come into tune into this podcast , you guys have a listening ear , you enjoy listening to this podcast and if you apply some of the tips , it can really help you to be a stronger and better individual , not only for yourself but for your family and for your friends .
So you guys that are tuning into this podcast , try hard to cultivate good texting manners Text only at appropriate times , check your tone , be discerning . Think before you hit the send button and be mindful to be discerning . Think before you hit the send button and be mindful to be discerning .
You see , when you do that , you will cultivate strong texting manners and build strong friendships that could last you a lifetime . This brings us to our first story of episode 33 . We're visiting now my home state , new Jersey . When this story came to my desk , I found the contents to be quite disturbing , to say the least .
Let me know what you guys personally think . Student hospitalized after blackout challenge at New Jersey middle school . A middle school student was hospitalized and another was hurt Tuesday after the two engaged in what is known as the blackout challenge , a dangerous game that involves holding your breath until you've passed out .
According to the principal's letter to parents , the blackout challenge is also sometimes called the choking game or fainting game . It has been around for years but resurfaces at times thanks to social media . It gained widespread notoriety on TikTok . South Orange Middle School principal Lynn Irby Hill sent a letter home to parents about the two incidents Tuesday .
In the first case , she wrote , a student passed out and was cared for by the school nurse . In the second case , the student had trouble breathing and needed assistance , so was rushed to the hospital along with a chaperone . The student has since been discharged from the hospital .
She asked parents in her school community to help drive home the message to their kids . The acting superintendent said the district considers itself lucky . Both students will recover . In December of 2021 , a Delaware mother attributed her 10-year-old daughter's death to an accident , noting her child often was known to watch blackout challenge videos .
Earlier that same year , a 12-year-old Colorado boy died after being hospitalized after his family said he tried the challenge . Parents should look for these signs if they suspect their children might be playing . According to the CDC Discussion of the game , including terms used for it , such as pass out game or space monkey .
Bloodshot eyes , marks on the neck , severe headaches , disorientation after spending time alone , ropes , scarves and belts tied to bedroom furniture or doorknobs or found knotted on the floor , unexplained presence of things like dog leashes , choke collars and bungee cords .
The tragic thing that comes from the birth or the start of this story is the fact that students are foolish enough to follow such dangerous and hazardous challenges . Dangerous and hazardous challenges . It's going to be a very difficult set of signs for parents to analyze and find and extinguish , but with diligence , you parents can come off successful .
We wish you guys all the best in South Orange , new Jersey .
¶ School Safety and Student Behaviors
Our next story is an update to an original story that took place today in Yukon , oklahoma , as breaking news . Here's the original story Yukon High School is on lockdown . Friday morning after a student was stabbed in the parking lot . Yukon police said an 18-year-old man confronted a female student whom he had a previous relationship with .
Police said an altercation broke out , resulting in minor injuries for the student . Police are investigating the incident and are searching for the man involved , who is believed to be no longer on campus . As a precaution , police said students and staff were placed on lockdown . Police said they will pursue criminal charges .
A school resource officer responded immediately to the stabbing . Well , there has been an update to that original story here in Yukon , oklahoma . Yukon police said the reported stabbing incident involving a juvenile female student at Yukon High School was falsely reported by the individual .
Police said after investigating it had been determined the alleged stabbing did not occur . No evidence was found supporting the individual's account and it was established the incident was fabricated , according to Yukon police . Police are emphasizing the seriousness of making false reports , especially regarding violent crimes .
Police said fabricating such events wastes not only valuable resources and time , but also the trust and the credibility of the community's safety institutions . Officials stated they are relieved . No actual harm occurred . However , condemned the actions of those who knowingly misled law enforcement and the public .
Police still urge the public to remain vigilant and report genuine incidents . A tragic set of circumstances In this case , the girl who cried stabbing . When it comes to reporting false reports , we obviously know that's wrong , but could this have been another way the girl was crying out for help ?
Could this have been another way for the girl to make mention that she is in a form of distress ? Maybe she's going through something at home . Maybe she went through something at school . In any event , we hope and wish well for all of those involved in this story and for the police who have to deal with these things each and every day .
What a difficult line of work you are in when these things come up on the norm . This next story is very , very , very gripping . When it came to my desk , I was amazed at just how blatant and how bold people are when it comes to expressing themselves . Elementary school volunteer arrested after taking inappropriate photo of target customer .
We're now going into the location of Greenville , north Carolina . An elementary school volunteer was arrested after he was seen on video placing his phone under a customer's skirt at a Target in Greenville , north Carolina . According to police , a bystander took a video of 21-year-old Thomas Elliott after she noticed him following her around the store .
The woman who took the video posted it on social media , including police showing up at the store and arresting him . A Pitt County School spokesperson said Elliott was a volunteer at a Greenville Elementary School .
Mcclellan said before volunteers and visitors are given campus access , they are screened through raptor , a program that determines if they are listed in any sex offender databases . Police said so far they haven't found any inappropriate photos of children on the man's cell phone .
A search warrant for the ell Elliott phone said he denied any wrongdoing and showed us , the police , the recent pictures he had on his cell phone . The warrant seeks , among other things , video files , digital photographs , text messages and deleted information that may be recovered via a forensic examination .
Elliott posted a $5,000 bond and had a first court appearance Tuesday in Greenville . All the more reason for women to be vigilant and diligent when they're out alone , when they're shopping .
This circumstance that developed could have escalated if woman number one wasn't aware of her surroundings , so it's extraordinary that she was able to catch this gentleman in the act , have the proof and be able to protect herself from further danger . There are some stories that we cover on this particular podcast that are easy to get through .
There are some stories that are just a matter of unforeseen occurrence , but this particular story that's accompanied with a video really highlights just the mentality of some of the young people in the school environment today Middle school student with disabilities attacked by other teens . We're now in Orange County , florida . We're now in Orange County , florida .
A disturbing case has left a family outraged and frustrated after their 12-year-old daughter with disabilities was attacked inside her school . Eyewitness News obtained the video showing the moment when two teenagers pulled the girl out of her wheelchair and tossed her to the ground . The case happened inside an elevator at Conway Middle in Orange County .
In the footage , the teens continue to punch and drag the 12-year-old , who's not able to stand up because of her condition . Who's not able to stand up because of her condition . Another video obtained by Eyewitness News shows yet another aggression , this time inside the school bathroom .
According to the girl's mother , the images depict the girl on the ground trying to make her way back to her wheelchair while other teens pull her hair , drag her around and punch her , all captured on camera and posted to social media . One of the aggressions caught on video happened just last Friday .
Since then , hall , her mother , says her daughter , who was born with a spinal condition , has not gone back to school . The principal went on to say to the school that they will take disciplinary action , but , according to the girl's family , nothing has been done so far . Deputy spoke to all other students involved who said they were just playing around .
Through the investigation , other videos were obtained and the ones that have been reviewed , appeared to support these statements . No one reported being a victim of any crime . The school has said that they are doing their due diligence in connection with investigating this very , very difficult attack .
However , if the students were playing , that is one angle that will have to be considered . Another factor , though , to consider is that this girl is disabled and so , by the looks of the , however , if the students were playing , that is one angle that will have to be considered . Another factor , though , to consider is that this girl is disabled . No-transcript .
The following story that leads up into what we're going to discuss . It was very difficult for me to be able to analyze the content of this story . Let me know what you think in the comments . Let me know what you guys think responding to this podcast .
For those of you who are listening audibly , let me know what you guys think about this particular story , because this one is extremely important . North Carolina high school student charged after slapping female teacher in profanity filled classroom tantrum in front of laughing classmates . The location now is North Carolina .
A North Carolina high school student was charged after he allegedly slapped his teacher multiple times during a viral , profanity-laced classroom rant earlier this week . The rage-filled youngster , identified only as a minor confronted the educator inside Parkland High School in Winston-Salem , where he violently attacked her .
According to video posted to social media , after the initial impact the teacher seemed unfazed by the slap as the student continued to run his mouth . Students behind the camera reacted to the slaps with laughter . Amid the classroom assault , the school district condemned the student's behavior , saying that this behavior will not be tolerated .
On Tuesday , a secure custody order was issued for three misdemeanor charges against the student for assault on a government official . He was charged with one count of communicating threats and two counts of misdemeanor assault .
The Forsyth Sheriff's Office announced Parkland High School principal Noel Keener warned the student would face disciplinary action along with criminal charges . Keener also reiterated that the behavior didn't display the school's expectations of its students . I can't believe just how graphic this video is . Now again , guys , we are dealing with a snippet of context .
However , it begs the question what goes on in the home environment of children today ? The blatant disrespect that this student unleashes on this teacher is extremely disgusting . Unleashes on this teacher is extremely disgusting . It's very discouraging to see how this student is handling himself when it comes to dealing with other human beings .
Now some have asked why the teacher did not employ self-defense . Well , the reality of the matter is this If the teacher would have responded to this boy's attack , then she would be out of a job . Some would say it's not worth it .
Maybe , maybe not , but knowing that she was being recorded , knowing that she had onlookers , she handled herself in a very dignified way , because if she would have gotten into any scuffling or violent attack with this student , the law would have had its just desserts in connection with her person . This teacher , we wish you all of the best .
There are so many teachers out there , guys , whom are dealing with these same trials , these same traumas in connection with students , and one thing that really concerns me on this show is if teachers have that stamina to continue to go , because eventually it's going to get to a point where they're not going to keep going , they're just going to shrink back .
This next story falls right into that same train of teacher dealing with students . This is another perspective of what can happen when a teacher takes matters into their very own hands . We're now going into Halifax County , virginia . Brawl at Halifax County High School raises questions about safety teacher conduct .
Abc 13 has obtained a video of a brawl that happened between students at Halifax County High School . Abc 13 worked hard to get answers on what started the fight and what will happen to the students who were involved . Abc 13 has obtained video of a brawl that happened between students at Halifax County High School .
Abc 13 worked to get answers on what started the fight and what will happen to the students who were involved . Halifax County Principal Kelvin Davis said the fight happened on March 27th , right before spring break . In a statement over email , davis said security and law enforcement acted quickly to break it up .
The video shows a fight breaking out between two young women , reportedly in the halls of Halifax County High School . About 30 seconds later , a male teacher is shown trying to break it up . The video shows the teacher on top of one of the students , looking like he's holding her down . Then two male students try to pull the teacher off .
Later the teacher is joined by another and trying to stop the male student . After that the video shows the teacher putting his hand around the student's throat . Abc 13 Act Halifax County School Superintendent Amy Huskin , if the teacher followed protocol and if they would be facing any repercussions . Huskin said the teacher stepped in when students were being unsafe .
They are never asked to do this as a part of their job duty specifically , but because they care about the children involved and the overall well-being of everyone around . They usually try to help until , unless or until , administrators , security and resource officers take over the situation .
Principal Davis says that all students who were involved will be disciplined according to law enforcement and school policy . He also says the teacher was injured during the fight and is now recovering . Here is the trauma and the tragedy . The teacher was doing their job .
There have been cases when a teacher has refused to break up a fight and has been charged with the enabling of student violence . In this story it makes mention that there were two male students that pulled the teacher off of the girls he was trying to maintain control of . They had no right to step in and get involved . Why ?
Because when they step in in the middle of a brawl , then the dynamic changes . We can't say whether or not this teacher intentionally choked these boys out , but adrenaline is a powerful force that moves us and when persons are put under pressure or in extreme circumstances , adrenaline takes over and erodes thinking and reasoning .
We wish the teacher a well and speedy recovery , but we also are not saying the teacher is justified for the choking of the student . We wish all of the victims involved in connection with this story a speedy recovery . But let this be a lesson for you guys Fighting is never the answer in connection with your problems .
Nothing was solved as a result of these two girls fighting and these two boys stepping in . In the following story that we're going to discuss , you see clear evidence of what can happen when a teacher takes physical assault as they rode that they're going to travel in connection with handling student situations .
Parents outraged after teacher allegedly attacks 7th grader . Parents of a Glendale student are outraged after a teacher allegedly assaulted their son during class . The assault reportedly happened on April 10th at Woodrow Wilson Middle School , according to Edith Navshadian , the student's mother . She claimed school officials tried to cover up the incident following their complaint .
She said their son was assaulted by a 7th grade math teacher in an unprovoked attack . Navshadian said her son's teacher initially asked him to stop eating in class when he turned around to speak with another classmate about a math problem . That's when the teacher allegedly came up from behind him and suddenly slapped him .
She was shaming him very badly , said Roland Bagdasarian , the boy's father , yelling at verbally belittled by the teacher for his alleged bad behavior . A cell phone video captured by a student during the altercation's aftermath showed the teacher allegedly defending her actions .
According to the family's attorney , the student who captured that exchange was told to email the recording to the vice principal and then erase it from his phone . The parents feel as though the school is trying to cover up what really happened because they requested that a particular student remove the footage from his phone .
So far , school officials have not announced whether any disciplinary action will be taken against the teacher . Navshadian said her son is still traumatized by the incident and has not returned to campus since .
They said the school's vice principal had called them to say their son's class schedule was changed and that the teacher involved would not be on campus in the coming week . However , the boy's family said these actions aren't enough and that the teacher involved , who has not been identified , should either resign or be fired from how she handled the situation .
¶ Parenting and School Safety Challenges
As parents , you strive to raise your children the best way that you know , how Oftentimes parents raise their children based on how they were raised , but then there are a unique few of parents or are a unique set of persons whom are parents that decide to steer or veer away from the raising that they had when they were coming up as children .
Today , we live in an environment in which people are prone to anger . In the one hand , parents should educate their children to be cautious as to what disrespect could be or mean to other persons . The teacher asked the young man to put away his chips mean to other persons . The teacher asked the young man to put away his chips . He refused .
Now the teacher decided to use her free will to slap this student . The school had nothing to do with that . She was wrong . She chose to do something and now there's a consequence for that . Students should never be hit by teachers . At the same time , we recognize that teachers are under a great deal of pressure and they're only humans .
So if parents aren't teaching their children to respect individuals , then these things could become more prevalent in the school environment . Again , this is just a context , so we don't have all of what happened . We don't know how problematic this teacher could be for this student in times past or how problematic the student could have been for the teacher .
There is a need for balance when analyzing these circumstances . However , if you think that firing this teacher is going to bring about a change in school dynamic , then you are sadly mistaking , because the reality is , for every one teacher that's fired for this conduct , there are 10 others waiting to replace them .
We are hoping that the student will be able to cope with his trauma . Take it steady , one day at a time , so that he can find that comfort he needs to return to school , maybe to get back to that normal routine and be able to bond and be in company with his friends , where he belongs . Our follow up story is indeed one of extreme tragedy .
This story does warrant our extreme condolences . We love you one so much and we're sorry to hear about the loss of your dear loved one . The uniqueness of this story is very , very interesting . Elementary school teacher stabbed to death by pre-med student son in Florida because she got on his nerves .
A pre-med student in Florida allegedly murdered his mom , a beloved elementary school teacher , because she got on his nerves , according to police .
According to police , emmanuel Espinoza , a 21-year-old student at the University of Florida , was heading to a family event when he asked his mom , elvia Espinoza , if he could stay with her for the weekend at her home about two hours south of Orlando when the 46-year-old second-grade teacher opened the door at about 2 pm Saturday , the knife-wielding madman launched a
vicious attack of assault . Right after the bloody murder , espinoza called 911 and confessed to the dispatchers . The sheriff made mention Espinoza , who has been charged with first-degree murder , allegedly told authorities that he really loved his mom , but she irritated him , according to the sheriff . The sheriff said espinoza has been sent to polk county jail .
I can't imagine the devastation that is coming upon the family members In the Espinoza family . This teacher , innocent , handling matters the best way she could as a teacher , as a mom , Succumbs to the choice and free will of another individual . We wish you guys the best as you try to recover with this tragedy .
We are so sorry that this story had to come through these circumstances , very , very difficult story to be able to report on . This next story follows the same pattern of misconduct and assault that comes on this show each and every week from teachers , those who are supposed to protect students but whom are taking advantage of them each and every single week .
We're going now into Decatur , illinois . Substitute teacher arrested for alleged misconduct with sixth grader . A longtime substitute teacher in Illinois was arrested and is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student , allie Bardfield , was booked in Macon County Jail on Wednesday and is facing charges of grooming and predatory criminal sexual assault .
According to police records , the victim is a sixth-grade student with Decatur Public Schools . Bardfield was a long-term substitute teacher assigned to his sixth-grade class . On Tuesday , a Decatur resident spoke to Mount Zion Police and reported a possible inappropriate relationship between her 11-year-old son and Bardfield .
The victim's mother reported noticing her son acting differently after a visit to Bardfield's house . As a result , she checked her son's phone and social media . In a follow-up discussion with her son , he disclosed having a sexual encounter with Bartfield while a guest at her Mount Zion residence on March 29 .
On Wednesday , officers with the Mount Zion Police Department and deputies from the Macon County Sheriff's Office conducted a joint investigation , which included a thorough review of text messages , social media and a search warrant executed at the suspect's residence .
As a result of the investigation , corroborating evidence was discovered and probable cause was established to arrest Barfield for predatory , criminal sexual assault of a child under 13 years of age and grooming . Decatur Public Schools says Barfield is no longer employed with DPS . The investigation in connection with this story is still ongoing , but the tragedies continue .
We wish this victim a well recovery and we're so sorry that the parent had to find out this particular way . If you guys see something in school , say something . Let someone know what's going on . Do not fear being called a snitch or that someone is going to hate you because you're trying to protect yourself and a friend In the school environment .
There are going to be times when you find stories that are humorous . Well , this next story is anything but humorous . This young man decided to take matters into his own hand to acquire what he thought would be a sensible amount of fame . Wooten High School student arrested for planning shooting said he wanted to be famous .
We're going now to Montgomery County , maryland . Montgomery County Public Schools has increased security at several schools in the district after police arrested an 18-year-old student who was threatening to carry out a school shooting .
Police say Andre Yee , whose preferred name is Alex , was arrested and charged in connection with plans to commit a school shooting at Wooten High School in Rockville . Police say Yee was taken into custody on Wednesday April 17th following a joint investigation by Montgomery County Police and FBI agents with the Baltimore Field Office .
The FBI first alerted MCPD about a 129-page manifesto written by Yee in which he talked about committing a school shooting and strategized how to carry out the act . In the manifesto , yee also wrote about targeting an elementary school and said that he wants to be famous .
Police say Yee has been charged with threats of mass violence and is being held in the montgomery county jail while he awaits a bond hearing . Police say a news conference is planned for friday . That is , today , april 19th . Nothing else further in connection with this particular story . When I was growing up , there were things that we did as a form of prank .
There were things that we did to get ahead in life as we thought it to be , and those things that we decided to do were a bit sensible . Today , guys , you are living in a very unique time . That means the way you think , that means the way you process . That means the way that you parent feel love and care about people . It has to change .
It has to change to protect yourself from individuals who may want to do each and every one of you harm . We wish you guys the best . In connection with this story , it may have been a very frightening time for those whom attend the school that Mr Yee wanted to attack .
In this follow-up story , it really pays homage to the expression , the apple does not fall too far from the tree . I firmly believe , as I've mentioned several times on this show , that parents have a direct influence on their children . This particular story highlights just how influential parents can truly be .
Father charged after elementary school student brings loaded gun to school . We're going out to Manchester , missouri , as our location . A father is facing charges Friday after police said he admitted to putting a loaded gun into his son's backpack that he brought to school .
St Louis County prosecutors charged 46-year-old Tony Fisher with first-degree endangering the welfare of a child . According to the Manchester Police Department , fisher is being held at the St Louis County Justice Center on a $10,000 bond .
According to Manchester Police , a school resource officer at Hannah Wood Elementary School in the parkway school district was notified on friday that a student brought a loaded gun to school . Police said the student had noticed the gun in his backpack while on his way to school on a school bus . At school the student told a teacher about the gun .
The student told police that the gun was his father's and he didn't mean to bring it to school . When Fisher arrived at the school , he admitted to owning the gun and placing the loaded firearm into his son's backpack . Fisher told police the gun was left in the backpack by accident . It's possible .
Stranger things have happened in this world , where a parent carelessly leaves a gun in their child's backpack . That's something that is possible and could be probable . It could also be , too , that dad was thinking of self-defense .
Because of the environment that students live in and because of the environment that students have to attend school in , it's only normal for a parent to want to give them a weapon as a form of protection . But parents also have to be cautious , because now this has done more harm than good , giving this father the benefit of the doubt .
We're so sorry if this was just a simple mistake , but if you're looking for a means to protect your son , if you're looking for that means to be able to help him deal with the traumas and challenges that come with attending school each and every day , seek other methods .
Look for other ways to protect your son so that you can be able to have that peace of mind and not have to deal with these kind of circumstances .
¶ Student Suspended for Using Term 'Illegal Alien
Our following story a great case of be cautious and careful of what you say , because your words can be misconstrued , they can be taken out of context . So , even if that means speaking slowly , take your time to express yourself . Here's our follow up Outrage as high school student is suspended just for using the term illegal alien in class discussion .
North Carolina is our location . A 16-year-old North Carolina high school student says he was suspended for just saying illegal alien while discussing word meaning in English class , possibly ruining his chances of landing a college sports scholarship .
Christian McGee , a student at Central Davidson High School in Lexington , received a three-day suspension last week after he used the term in English class . His mother , leigh McGee , said his teacher had given an assignment that used the word alien and Christian asked like space aliens or illegal aliens without green cards ?
Another student reportedly took offense and threatened to fight Christian . So the teacher took the matter to the assistant principal , according to the Carolina Journal . Eventually his words were determined to be offensive and disrespectful to Hispanic classmates , so he was suspended .
The suspension may also affect the student-athlete's prospects of securing a college sports scholarship . The journal noted Because of his question , our son was disciplined and given three days out of school suspension for racism . His mother wrote in an email describing the incident .
The irate mom said the assistant principal has refused to remove the suspension from the boy's record , so the family has hired an attorney . On tuesday his mother appeared on the pete calendar show , alia , which airs on radio station wbt , and said her family had once lived in England , and Christian mentioned how Britons also need green cards to live in the US .
She said she and her husband told the assistant principal that illegal alien is a term their son can look up in a dictionary . There are many persons who are frustrated with the way things developed .
There is a context here that we have to take note of by looking at the article and the variety of comments it makes mention here , and I quote eventually , his words were determined to be offensive and disrespectful to hispanic classmates , so he was suspended .
I've learned in life , guys , that there are some things that we can say and there are some things that we can't say . It all depends on the context and whom is around and what is going to be the result or the consequence of what we said . In particular , I'm not saying that this boy should have been suspended for three days .
Some may look at that as a bit extreme , and it could be the case , because now his scholarship is in question . However , when you think about it from the perspective of those who may have been offended by what he said . If the school did not take any action at all , what would have been the consequent ? What would have happened ?
How could they have acknowledged the hispanic individual's feelings ? Because it could have been argued that if no action was taken , then the school sided with the boy's statement in whatever way it was perceived by the hispanic student . We're not saying that it was perceived a certain way , but it it could have been , and so that's something to be conscious of .
When it comes to respect and communication , we have to think of everyone involved . We hope that the family is able to communicate clearly and get this all sorted out , and hopefully his scholarship won't be affected by this . By the context of the story , it does not seem like he was trying to be offensive .
However , we just have a small snippet of the context , and we wish all of the students involved in this story the best as they traverse these unique circumstances today in high school . Well , guys , we are winding down to our final three stories in connection with this episode . Our follow-up story follows the tragedy of a school in Perry , iowa .
There is some good news after four months ago , their tragedies , perry High and the Junior Class Prom Committee was nominated by Karen Thetemore , a general manager at the JCPenney in West Des Moines .
Prom is set for April 27th , which is just under four months since a shooting at Perry High School that took the lives of sixth grade student Amir Jolief and high school principal Dan Marburger . Some of the money will be used to buy prom tickets for the students , something Leber says is a game changer for many of her classmates whom is a senior at the school .
The money will also be used to charter buses for students . After prom , lebre says they will head to Hotel Pate for food . She says the dance will be held at La Poste and after the dance they will head to Spare Time in West Des Moines for bowling and laser tag . She told KCCI that this prom is special to her and those in the school who will be going .
Kcci reached out to JCPenney , who shared a wonderful statement in connection with the school . It says here JCPenney is committed to standing with and celebrating the communities it serves . This means going beyond the shopping experience and making one of life's special moments more special . Well , this is extremely , extremely beautiful .

Students walk out of Wilmer Hutchins High School protesting the lack of security on campus On the first day back to school after a shooting on campus , students walked out of Wilmer Hutchins High School on Monday morning in an act of protest over campus security . Nbc5 was outside the school when 50 to 100 students began leaving the building .
Students who stopped to speak with NBC5 said they were concerned for their safety and that the people hired to keep the campus safe weren't doing their job .
Students shared that there was a brief meeting about the incident and said school leaders seemed to blame teachers for needing to do more , but they felt it was the administration which hasn't put enough structure and emphasis on safety . Two teachers joined in with the students and walked out of school , also critical of school leaders .
Tyree Dean being one of them , told NBC5 on Monday morning . He teaches English 3 and 4 at the school . He said he had to find out what was going on at the school on Friday through social media and that he's proud of his students for walking out of class and for using their voice . Their words echo what we're hearing from parents at the school .
The parents pointed to Wilmer Hutchins , elementary School principal , whom had a virtual meeting with the student body and parents in connection with their school . However , the high school has done nothing to communicate with individuals .
The student was injured Friday this is the story that has affected this walkout when another student entered the building with a gun and shot that student in the leg . The injured student was hospitalized and is expected to recover . No other injuries were reported . However , parents and staff were trying to figure out how a gun was allowed to get into the building .
Apparently , they're saying that the metal detectors were not working , but parents and staff members believe otherwise . When it comes to trying to affect change , the best thing to do is keep calm . Try your best to reason with the situation . Oftentimes , people go straight to anger , violence and aggression .
Those are reactions , but they don't always produce positive results . So look for ways to reason with individuals that you're trying to reach and you may have a better outcome . We wish you guys all the best here at Wilmer Hutchins , because it's not easy when you feel as though you're in an environment in which you cannot be safe or fully feel protected .
