Do you see connections everywhere you look? Are you wondering about the great awakening and how it will affect you? Thanks for joining me, Anne Corbin and my guests. As we offer you different perspectives and analyses of current issues, together with advice on health, wealth, and relationships, as we navigate those storms together, not forgetting the systems available to us from metaphysics Anne our own higher selves.
Warmest New Year's greetings to everybody, and my apologies for not offering a little Anne warning for the break that I decided to take over Christmas and the new year. Oh, and please note that was a conscious choice to say Christmas, I've objected to that still fashionable happy holidays greeting, Ever since I first learned, I mean, ever since I first became aware of it, which was probably in the early eighties when I was briefly engaged with an American school.
Why are we so concerned or at least the people who control us Anne nominally concerned about offending non Christians. I don't believe they are offended, in fact, Anne most have no objection to the commercial circus and flow of money that gears up Anne delivers business saving revenues to retailers and the hospitality industry every year. They rely on Christmas, many of them just to keep going.
Use of happy holidays might have been the first glimmer of political correctness, 40 plus years ago, and it's now manifesting in hate crimes and Anne culture. All sorts of craziness that's being escalated very intentionally against the so called average person. Who just wants to get on with everything and do his or her best for the family Anne be remembered with a little warmth at least by them Anne maybe, slightly wider circle when it's time to move on.
So here we are at the start of Mindbody Spirit Connection season 2. As we are all wondering what challenges 2023 will have in store for us, I'll start with a question How are we doing with the new year resolutions? Still holding fun? Well, probably because it's early days yet, Anne I'd like to offer just a little advice to make it easier to stick with the resolutions much further into the year than you have perhaps managed in the past.
Of course, If you are one of those paragons who has no trouble staying resolved and successful every year, Well, all I can say to you is, congratulations. You are an example to us all Anne well done you. For myself, I've found that what really makes the difference is when I'm truly bought into my resolutions, and I have made them reasonable and achievable. Also, I acknowledge that within the personal development world, there is a tendency to combine resolutions with goals.
And personally, I believe that both are valuable and that they are separate animals, so to speak, and they need to be chosen care Corbin carefully Anne separately. Because the advice on selecting each of them is different. You probably know the acronym for goal setting it's smart, SMART. Goals ideally should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic Anne time bound. I think that the last bit is where the biggest difference lies.
And also that resolutions really don't need to be as specific, nor as measurable That's why you really need separate goals and resolutions if you're even considering goals at the same time as you're considering your New Year's resolutions. There is a saying that a goal without a deadline is just a dream, And regarding resolutions, well, maybe they could be considered 1st cousins of dreams.
I see resolutions as intentions of a sort, but there's rather more strength in the statement I resolve to do such and such, Anne there is with, I intend to do such and such. You might think that the year is already a little advanced for this discussion Anne that it should have happened in December.
Well, I wouldn't really argue with that, but Let's suppose that you aren't really bought into that resolution that you made, or maybe January 1st 2nd came and went, no resolutions were made, and you felt that you had missed the boat for another year? That's happened to me once or twice, or perhaps you feel yourself failing already. Anne wondering if you can even hold on just until the end of January, at least? Many people decide to abstain from alcohol in January, you know, dry Anne?
And there's nothing wrong with that. But more accurately, this is a challenge in my opinion rather than a resolution. It's can I hold out until a certain date? A whole 3 days per week if you're among the many of us who like to have a glass or 2 on a daily basis. So a great idea for a resolution that can last all year and even become a lifestyle change forever is I resolve to give up alcohol on Tuesdays Wednesdays, just say. It's not too daunting, and you can even flex it.
So if you get invited out to an occasion, like somebody's birthday, on a Wednesday, then You can do Monday Tuesday that week. You get the picture. Resolutions need not always be about giving up or cutting out. It's always good to state intentions or goals or resolutions in positive terms. Corbin example, my diet in 2023 is now healthy and balanced with fresh food wherever possible. Rather Anne, I'm cutting out all fast food, processed food, and caffeine with effect from the 1st January.
Anne how many resolutions should we have? Well, it considered that there are about 8 separate areas of your life to consider. These are mental, physical, spiritual, emotional, vocational, financial, relationships, and contribution. And you could extend it to include family and fun. Most people leave out fun Not a good plan. Of course, that makes it 10 areas. Am I suggesting that you need 10 resolutions?
Evan Snow. But I am suggesting that you might do well to consider each area, at least and decide which ones could do with some improvement. You might, for example, come up with five areas that you decide to work on. This is obviously personal to everybody, so the choice is yours, and yours alone. And just listing those categories, might cause an intention to leap off the page at you, to coin a phrase. So what if we're already into January?
A well thought out resolution, one that means something to you, can last all through the year, even when it's no longer new, and it just becomes a habit. And then congratulations really are in order. And if you've picked out 4 or 5 or more, if that's your choice, you've got the flexibility for a 1 or 2 to 4 by the wayside, without it mattering at all. Another hack is to write down your resolutions.
This might beg the question, well, where should I write them down, or maybe even just why should I write them down? Well, the y part is easy. You are 42% more likely to succeed in your resolution or goal or intent if you're committed to memory in writing. Not only have you activated those all important neural pathways, you automatically have a written reminder to which, of course, you should refer at regular intervals. And now the relevance of the where question.
You could use a scrap of paper or the back of an envelope, which you might stuff in a drawer or even use as a bookmark for a while until you lose it, And you could follow this suggestion. Write down your intentions on the fly leaf of a book that you use regularly. For example, you might keep a journal. That might be one of your resolutions. Or you might use a manual diary of some sort. Perhaps you attend trainings or masterminds, and keep notes for that in a dedicated notebook.
What better place to keep your resolutions for easy reference and frequent reminders. You could print them out and stick them in the front of your, ring binder file or lever file, or if you're slightly techie, you could even make a screensaver with your resolutions and surround it with pretty pictures or, something that represents the resolution.
Each time you look at them, you remind your psyche of how it felt when you came to that decision, and you set the intention You can mentally measure and assess your progress. And if you aren't doing so well, well, you can give yourself a metaphor kick up the barrier, or you might simply have decided that that, or those resolutions, collapse because Well, just because it's up to you. All this is voluntary.
It's supposed to be helpful, helping you towards a happier and more fulfilling life with better relationships, better health, and better finances. And this is a great place to mention negative self talk. I truly believe that we are all guilty of it Anne even though I've been aware of how damaging it can be for more than 10 years, I still catch myself out occasionally. It's automatic. We are naturally our own worst critics.
We have this tendency to compare ourselves to others who seem to be blessed in their endeavors, and it's just not helpful. Rather compare yourself now to yourself this time last year. And are you happy with your progress? Or at least do you recognize progress? I'm sure the answer is yes. And if the answer isn't yes Anne you're bothered about it, then send me a PM, and we can talk. Do not criticize yourself for silly errors and omissions.
So you left a light on, didn't put your keys back on the hook, lost something, allowed something to burn, or the house is a mess, or your cupboards are a disgrace, or you didn't drop the 2 dress sizes that you promised this time last year. So what? None of it matters except to you. And outsiders, probably haven't even noticed, but it's the perfectionist within you that cares, and that's good. The journey is about self improvement, and that's why we make resolutions.
I wish you every success with yours, and May 2023 be a surprisingly good year, for all of us.
