Kulwant Singh Virk was born in village Phuleran (District Shekhupura) in March, 1921. Around Phuleran, there were about 125 villages of the Virk community belonging to a single ancestor. That is why Kulwant Singh took a lot of pride in belonging to the 'Virk brotherhood'.

Kulwant Singh Virk did his post-graduation in English literature. He also passed Bachelor of Law. He served in the army and was the liaison officer of the Punjab Government and the Central Govt. He worked at the Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana and finally retired as the Press Secretary to the Chief Minister of Punjab.

He got Sahitya Akademi award for ‘Naven Lok’ in 1968. He died in 1987 in Canada where he was undergoing treatment following a stroke.
Waryam Sandhu, one of Punjab’s preeminent short story writers, says, “Perhaps, he is the only short story writer who is remembered by writers, critics and readers of Punjabi literature from across time and space as the greatest storyteller.”
