Episode description
In today's episode of Psych Talk I discussed the concept of "Therapy is political". Many people have the belief that therapists and psychologists should not be political and, rather, be neutral on issues of injustice. I discuss how therapy is innately political and highlight various ethical codes that highlight therapists' ethical duties of justice, service, and advocacy. I discuss what the term "therapy is political" does not mean, as well as what it does mean. Further, I discuss client's rights when it comes to finding a therapist that aligns with them politically. Ultimately, the takeaway of this episode is that therapist is innately political and therapists remaining neutral on issues directly impacting their clients does harm, creates an unsafe space of clients who are directly negatively impacted by sociopolitical systems, and goes against what ethics require.
