Episode description

Today’s show is packed with practical wisdom to help ground us in the middle of these stressful times. You’ll learn why “do what you love” is NOT the best career advice, why being a workaholic shouldn’t carry a negative connotation, and why simplifying your life may be the very best choice you can make.

Dr. Marty Nemko is a highly-regarded career coach who has written many books, articles, and essays with practical wisdom for life strategies. He has been featured on numerous radio and TV shows and has held many positions as an education expert. Even though he completed his Ph.D. in educational psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, he has always believed that his life experiences have been far more valuable in his life than his formal education. On the personal side, Marty grew up in the Bronx, was a professional pianist at age 14, and went on to be a NYC cab driver before pursuing his education. A lifelong lover of the theater, Marty is a playwright, actor, and director; he and his wife, a school superintendent, have one daughter who works for the US Department of Justice.

Join us for a fresh perspective on your career, and don’t miss Marty’s unforgettable example of how limitations can lead to adaptation and produce resilience.

Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential Production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group.

Show Highlights:

  • What people need most right now in dealing with stress
  • Why we need to realize that people are NOT as malleable as we might think
  • The key to workplace relationships: self-esteem
  • The difference in being straightforward and “couching” in today’s workplace
  • How the lack of culture and connection are common themes in today’s “great resignation”
  • Why being treated with respect and having connections with others are often more valuable than a big salary
  • What Marty means by saying, “Do what you love—and starve.”
  • Why we have to balance idealism and realism and listen to praise from the people willing to pay us
  • “One size does NOT fit all”--why some workaholics choose to make a bigger contribution
  • Why Marty works 70 hours/week (It’s NOT because he loves what he does!)
  • Marty’s musical illustration of how limitations lead to resilience–because we learn to adapt (“Skirt your weaknesses and build on your strengths.”)
  • Why an MBA increases the chances of someone’s failure as an entrepreneur, and how the “cart business” can be a simple path to success
  • How Marty has applied the “Simplexity, not complexity” principle to his life to be successful, comfortable, and happy
