Action . Live action . Dr Pinesett here . Hello everyone , welcome , welcome , welcome , welcome . Today's live stream . I'm excited . This is three weeks in a row we've gotten these live streams going . We're live Monday , wednesday Amazingness . So I hope you guys are gonna join me every week .
This week , we're talking about pre-med GPA repair and we're talking about a common , catastrophic mistake that so many pre-meds make , and I don't want you to make that . So tonight we're talking about it . We're going to save you from that .
So if you were a pre-med whether you're starting out your journey or you're in your journey you've already messed up the GPA and trying to figure out what's going on . This is a great video for you , because we're going to walk through some key steps to preserving your GPA , repairing your GPA , handling post-bacs and getting into medical school .
So we're gonna hit the intro and then we'll get right into it , guys , or we won't . I guess what's not happening today . So here we go . The very first thing I want to say , guys , is that , when it comes to medical schools , gpa is one of the things I stress so hard with students , because it is the most important aspect of your application .
It is the first tool that schools use to weed you out to select the criteria of who's competitive and who is not .
And the second reason I stress GPA so much is because it is one of the hardest and slowest things to repair , so you're better off getting it right first , so that way you don't have to go into repair mode later on playing catch up , trying to put out the fire that's already blazing .
So what I want you guys to recognize is this GPA matters and let's focus on it . And the reason this live stream came about today was that I had a student come and shadow me and we were talking about where they were in their academic journey .
And this student now at this point , is a non-traditional student who's taking a couple of years to get their life together , after they've made some key mistakes and one of these mistakes is what we're talking about tonight . But they've already done undergrad , they've done a post-bac , and now they're trying to figure out what their next step is .
And as I'm talking to the student , I'm like okay , so what happened in undergrad ? Well , in undergrad I had a lot going on . I failed some classes , I did this and it wasn't a strong time for me , and there was a problem . Boom . Then that problem strikes . They're like , okay , I messed up the undergrad GPA . I'm looking online .
They say I should do a post-bac . Okay , I'm going to do a post-bac program and then enroll in a university post-bac program . And they are doing okay , and they start to struggle and the wheels come off . And then they do terribly and they bomb the post-bac program .
They got through , they finished the post-bac program , but they didn't do a stellar job and at the end of that post-bac program they were left looking around like , hmm , what should I do next ? And the post-bac program was telling them listen , you can't apply to medical school . You messed , you can't apply to medical school . You messed this up .
You got to go back and take more coursework . And so now they're feeling kind of lost and , like I said , they're in this big limbo of GPA and the big mistake the student made I want you guys to be so , so aware of . We have to plan for success , we have to craft and create success . It doesn't happen magically on its own .
And so for you guys as students , if you want to get into medical school , you've got to plan , you've got to prepare to get yourself into medical school . And for this student , at every step of their journey . They made mistakes in planning , mistakes in preparation that have cost them and put them in a huge hole in terms of getting into medical school .
Let's go back to the beginning . This student started at community college . Where are my community college students at who went to community college first for their pre-med journey ? It's a great route , totally valid . You can do it . You go to community college . While you're in community college , what should you be doing ?
You should be milking community college for all it's worth , getting your study skills up right , getting your resources together , mapping out your timeline to get to medical school . You should be maxing out the number of classes you're taking .
You should be building your experience foundation so you can launch into the university level , because now you've only got what you transfer two years to do , what other people do in four years right , so we have to ramp up into our university .
Well , this student went to community college and was like I don't know what I'm doing , I'm just going to do the best I can . They didn't have a plan for developing and maximize community college and , as a result , they did okay in community college .
They got the grades , they got into their university , their four-year university , and it was a state school , and so they go to the state school and they're at the state school and they again get to the state school and if anybody who knows right , all the transitions high school , community college , whatever those transitions are huge hurdles .
So they go now to the university level and at the university level , oh , dang it . It's much more difficult at their state school than it was the community college . They're not ready for how quick the material comes at , the lack of support , right , the step of incompetition . And as a result , and as a consequence of that , what happens ? They get mollywhopped .
When they start the state school , that first semester and a half goes terrible . Then they find their footing . I'm like , okay , I can navigate this . And they get it on track and they start doing better at their state school .
So now they get to the end of their four-year journey community college and state school and they finished up and they have these inconsistencies in their GPA and overall the GPA is not as strong as it could be . Why didn't this student take the time at community college to prepare themselves for the transition ?
And this is the mistake that so many students make . Is you wait until you're struggling , until you're failing , until you have an obstacle , to prepare for the obstacle . You know as a pre-med student that there's going to be higher levels of education , whether that's university , whether that's going to post-doctoral , whether that's going to medical school .
It's not okay to be getting by at your current level . How many of you guys live with that mentality where you're just getting by , I'm just getting by , I'm just getting by , I'm just getting by . How many of you guys are just getting by ? Can we be honest ? Can we tell the truth here ?
How many of you guys are just getting by in your classes and so forth ? I'll wait , we're live , action Y'all . It's Dr Andre Pineset . If you're liking this video so far , give me a like right now . Let me know , let the algorithm know that I'm on here . We're giving it , we're doing it . We can wait , we are live . It's okay .
If you're not catching this live , maybe you're catching it on the recording on my YouTube channel . Maybe you're catching it on the podcast , because we've got the podcast going too . But let me know right now how many of you guys are just getting by at your current academic level . Okay , I see the comments coming in . Yes , just getting by .
Thank you for being honest . Some of us will be honest that we're just getting by . We're not anywhere near thriving or being where we want to be . Well , what do you think happens when you jump up to those upper division classes ? What happens when you go to medical school and so forth ?
You hit this road bump , you hit this roadblock and it's hugely problematic . So what I want you guys to do as you're looking at your prospects to get to medical school is don't get be satisfied with getting by . Be satisfied never . Always be aspiring to get better and preparing for that next thing , that next obstacle that comes .
That way , you don't have these inconsistencies in your performance , because that's what medical school is looking at . Right . They're looking at your trends . So if you were doing well and then you have a blip , and then you're doing well and you have a blip , that's not that strong upward trend that medical schools want to see . That's an inconsistency .
So consistency is everything in your transcript . So prepare . Then the student goes to the undergrad , right , and they haven't done as well as they want . So they're like I got to do a post-bac program , does he hear this ? So they enroll in a post-bac straight out .
They get in and now this post-bac , they're going from community college to state school and now the post-bac program they're going to is at a university and , as we all understand , this is why these schools are designed this way . Community college is one level of competition and difficulty and has more support . Then you move to state school .
You get a little bit less support , a little bit more difficulty , right . And then you move to university and it's another level , and it's not to papoo any of these levels . They're all great in their own rights , but they're designed to do different things and so because of that , there's a different level of competition .
And so she enrolls at this post-bac at a university and then didn't realize how much more difficult it was going to be , and so wasn it prepared for that . And so that was with the inconsistency and the poor performance in the post-bac program . That is the problem , right , we're not preparing adequately .
Then , while she's in a post-bac program , we have to understand when we enroll in a post-bac program we cannot again be satisfied with just getting by . Doing well in a post-bac program is excelling . You have to be exceptional because you're trying to get accepted . You'd be exceptional to be accepted to medical school . So once you're in a post-bac program .
You've got to be at the top of your game . You got to be delivering . You got to be getting those A's because this is the last cherry on the Sunday of your pre-bac career and we want that strong , amazing , upward cherry .
We got to have those A's in that post-bac program and that's why , if you guys look at these postdoc programs , one of the requirements right for the direct admit or the preferred admit or the interview is that you have this super high GPA . Why ? Because they expect that of you . You're in this program , you're focused , you want to go to medical school .
Show us how much it matters to you . So when you go into a postdoc program and you don't perform at a high level , it's catastrophic for your med school chances . Because here you are . There can be no excuses because you can't say , oh , I wasn't focused on med school . Then , yes , you were . You were in post-doc program . Oh , I didn't have what I needed .
Yes , you did . You're in a post-doc program . They give you the support and the resources . Well , I didn't . No , they're comparing you across the standard of other pre-meds and so there are no excuses for that poor performance .
And when med school see poor performance in the post-bac , it is a major red flag and as I use that term red flag can I sidetrack for a second ? We had a funny moment on coaching last week in my Dominate Pre-Med Accelerator .
My group and we were all laughing because one of my students is part of a Facebook group or something , and some expert came on and was like oh , you can never reapply to medical school If you apply to medical school a third time . That is a huge red flag and you will not get in .
And so we were cracking up because everyone on this forum and this Facebook group was eating it up Like , oh my gosh , if I apply a third time , I'll never get in . And I'm like that can't be true guys , it can't , it can't be true . A because I've had multiple students apply two , three , four , five times and get in along that spectrum .
But even more directly , I said the questions you want to ask . We'll tell you this like oh , it's a red flag . Ask them straight up what does it mean when you say red flag ? Quantify that . What is a red flag ? What is the definition of a red flag ?
And for most people what they'll say is oh , it's something that is a bad mark , it's something that alerts me that things are not good here , I'm going to look at your application with a critical eye . Then the follow-up question is well , you're saying it's a red flag and I can't get in . What happens when you have a third-time applicant in your pile ?
Do you immediately reject them and throw the application away ? And the response they'll give you is no , no , no . But I'm just looking at it very critically because they have to have really done something to really get my acceptance . That's what they're saying .
So when people tell you always , never , always , ignore these people , you can always get in the medical school . You can always come back , no matter what damage you've done to your GPA or otherwise , you can always come back from it . All right Now to get back to it . It's a major red flag , right Cause for concern .
If you don't do well in your postbac , so you want to do well in your postbac . Does that make sense to everybody ? So this student's mistake is they were settling at their current level .
They kept having these bumps and this inconsistency in their GPA , so they couldn't have some upward trend and they kept trudging forward , making the same recurrent of lows , highs , lows , highs , instead of fixing it . And so for you guys right . Here's the teaching , here's the takeaway here . Now we understand what the problem is .
You guys must understand if your GPA , if you're just starting out in your GPA , you know you're not a strong student and you have concerns about where your GPA may go , or if you're an older student , you've already made the damage to your GPA .
You must understand that if you want to get the A , you have to have A strategies , a skills , a habits , a discipline , all these kinds of things , and all of this takes learning . You have to learn how to study , maybe kind of things , and all of this takes learning . You have to learn how to study , maybe through a program like my five pillars of study .
Let's get a very great . We get my coaching , my course right , we have coaching right after this , in 15 minutes , or it's something else .
But you have to learn and invest in yourself to say I'm going to become the professional student , I'm going to study studying , I'm going to study learning , I'm going to improve my time management , I'm going to improve my focus so I can be a higher level student .
We have to fix ourselves Before you can repair your GPA , before you can enhance your GPA , before you can fortify . Before you can have a strong GPA , you yourself must be fortified , you yourself must be strong , you yourself must be super if you want a super high GPA . If you haven't done the work on yourself , how can you work on your GPA ?
You don't have the tools , you don't have the skillset . So I encourage all of you guys , before you start focusing on your GPA , focus on you , because that is the key to changing the GPA . Does that make sense to everybody ?
As we work on ourselves and we say , okay , I'm going to learn how to study , I'm going to take this time , we have to put ourselves in a winning position so that we don't do more damage while we're improving , because true improvement takes time . It doesn't happen overnight , right ?
Even with my amazing program , I have some students who turn around like this , but there are other students who take a little bit longer . And however far you have to go , however far you are from the A , it takes longer to get there . Just like with MCAT prep , right ?
The farther you are from your goal score , it takes longer , and so that's the same thing with studying . So give yourself that time . Don't be in a rush to rush through and get to rejection . Take the pressure off right .
Some of these students are scared to take a step back , to slow things down , so that way they can take multiple steps forward , so they can spring forward powerfully towards their future . That's what I want you guys to do . So , as you do this , how do we slow down ? How you do this , how do we slow down ? How do we get to the staples ?
How do we improve ourselves ? Well , we have to start with setting a realistic timeline and then performance expectations for ourselves in that timeline , for you as students . If you've damaged your GPA , we have to understand that GPA is an average . So if you've spent multiple years damaging your GPA , how long will it take to repair that GPA ?
At least multiple years , if not longer . We have to understand that . There's no snapping my fingers . Oh , I've been messing up for four years . One summer class is going to fix it , no , so set a realistic timeline . Listen , I've messed up for two years . I've got to take two years and fix it . That's the way we're looking at it .
Set a realistic timeline and then , along that timeline , set realistic performance expectations for yourself .
So wait , along this timeline , I'm going to be doing this and then I'm going to be doing this , I'm going to be improving this way and so that way , we know that we can step up to that and , as part of that , we facilitate with our courseworks and our extracurriculars . So we talk about this upward trend in your GPA .
So if you mess it up , we've got to have an even stronger upward trend . Well , to create that , we need consistent , high-level performance . How do we do that ? We're going to be like handle the bricks of coursework . We have to do practice first course load management .
What I mean by that is it's crucial to manage your course load to avoid withdrawals , drops , failures , all these things . Manage your course load . Hold on one second , guys . So we have to manage our course load . When you were trying to repair GPA , start slow , guys . We don't get in this rush . I'm going to take all the classes .
If you've been messing up , take your time . Go back to the drawing board , one step at a time . Take a few classes , get the A's , then take a few more . Get the A's , then take a few more , get the A's . You move yourself along that trajectory . That's how you build up that foundation .
Rome wasn't built in a day , and your GPA will be built in a day either Step by step , to get there right . Then , once you plan out these course loads , you escalate . So we start slow and we escalate . So we take two classes , we A's Okay , now let's take a third class . Let's get A's in that for a semester or two .
Let's take a fourth class and we slowly escalate our course load simultaneously as we make this plan for success . We talked about let's distribute our coursework over a period of time . So we say to ourselves , wait , I need to take repeat these classes , I need to take these high-level classes .
Well , let's distribute our course load such that we have some easy courses , some difficult courses every single semester to help ourselves put forth our best effort and be successful . So we're not taking physics and OCHEM and calculus and everything all in one semester . Space it out . We're not going to add any physics . Space it out to make ourselves successful .
Yes , yes , o-chem with an elective , this with an elective . That way , this is live action , right ? People texting me during the live stream here . That's why I said hold on a second here . I got patients getting at me here . Okay , and make sure we're all right , everybody's safe , nobody's . You know I am a physician by day .
I gotta make sure you know I am a physician by day . I got to make sure you know I'm here with you . Guys , things are going right . The other part so we talked about managing your course schedule is managing your extracurricular load . So it's extracurricular load management .
We talked about having a realistic timeline and performance expectations in the classroom and also outside the classroom . Yes , I know , guys , medical school is very competitive , so you have to do all these things to get in . I got to do this , I got to do the research , I got to be a leader , all these things .
None of that is going to matter the way you want it to , until you fix the GPA . Let's be serious , guys . I know when I say this , everyone's like no , he's lying . He's lying . They don't care about just the GPA . I'm not saying medical schools only care about the GPA . What I'm saying is the GPA is the first thing they see .
So why would you set yourself up to look bad , right up top right ? Would you go to a med school interview in sweats ? Sure , maybe your game is so strong , your application is so strong and you're a rap . Your ability to talk in an interview is so amazing . They overlook the sweatpants . But why make them .
Overlook the sweatpants , just put some slacks on before you go to the interview . This is the same way with your application . Why make your first impression a bad impression ? Fortify the GPA that way . It puts them in a good mindset to look at the rest of your application like , oh my gosh , this was amazing in the classroom .
Oh , and then look , they also did this outside . It amplifies , it magnifies everything else instead of trivializing and minimizing the accomplishments you have outside the classroom . So , with that understanding , let's lock in our study skills , let's lock in our GPA first , and then we can start slowly adding on the extracurriculars . And I'll use those same words .
We're going to escalate our extracurriculars , slowly but surely , adding things on our plate , not all the extracurriculars all at once . I'm going to be a volunteer . I'm going to research Everything in due course , building ourselves up . We're going to distribute our extracurriculars out over our remaining time . So , okay , these two semesters is this .
These two semesters is this . This is going to run longitudinally . I'm going to be involved in this all the years , whatever , but we distribute it so we can look at it and make sure things are lining up accurately .
That will help us be successful outside the classroom and have a wonderful what I call a future doctor narrative , something you can spin to medical schools and say listen , this is who I am , this is the impact I make . This is how I plan to continue to impact your medical school and then even beyond medical school .
This is how I plan to impact the world as a physician . We want to make all of that clear to medical schools , and that's how we do it . Then , all right , I talked about this too . This is all for all you guys . Right , we're going to manage .
Right now , if you're listening to this on the podcast , leave a review , take a second , say hey , listen , five stars . Dr P is amazing . He be dropping knowledge every single week , monday and Wednesday . He's live action . Right , let me know , I don't want to be here alone , y'all , I don't want to be lonely , okay ?
This student continued to make bad decisions throughout their journey . It about blame . It's about objectively looking . They made bad decisions . They kept going forth unprepared in their journey . They chose to enroll in a post-bac program , not being ready , and so we have to understand for you guys . You go to prepare your GPA post-bac programs .
Thank you , I appreciate the comment right there . Love it , love it , love it , thank you . Thank you for not making me feel like I'm alone right now . It's so slow for you guys to respond . There's a delay . But post-mortem programs are amazing .
They do wonders to reset the damage you've done to your GPA , and their impact on your GPA is more than just the raw change in the actual number of your GPA . It is an impact thing for your application .
But at the same time , because they have such a huge impact beyond just the number change of GPA , they can have a huge detrimental and anchoring effect to your application if you perform poorly inside of them .
So if you're not careful , you can jump into a postdoc program and it can turn into a huge trap that anchors you down and keeps you out of medical school . And so let's understand that there are some key challenges to postdoc programs . Let's be aware of them . I'm going to teach you them right now .
And then let's talk about some ways we can maneuver around those to make the most of post-bacs , to make the most of our opportunity and to get ourselves into medical school Ready . Okay , post-bacs are great . They improve the GPA , they give you connections , they give you resources , they give you opportunities . It's cool .
But the challenge of post-bac programs is that because they have all these things to offer , they expect you to partake in all of it . So post-bac programs are comprised of a bunch of pre-meds who want to go to medical school , a bunch of not just pre-meds desperate , thirsty , hungry pre-meds who have made mistakes and are looking to fix it .
They know this is their last chance , right , like that show on Netflix , last Chance U . These guys are hungry , they're scrapping . This is their last chance . That's how you should approach a post-bac program .
But because of that right , there's a lot of desire , there's a lot of focus for people knowing this is it , and so , because of that , the competition level is high . So you have a concentrated group who are highly motivated to do well , and so , because of that , the standard of these programs it goes . So you have to meet that standard .
You can't blah , blah , blah , blah right in your post-it program the standard will be very high . The competition not only the competitive , but the coursework is designed to be challenging . These post-bac programs want to be able to tell medical schools we are putting students out who are prepared for the rigors of medical school .
They do that by emulating medical school within the post-bac program . So they're heavy course loads , heavy science loads , it's fast paced , the material is taught at a great depth because they're pitching this to medical schools . And so , for you guys , right , I want you to understand Thank you for saying my volume is a little low Is that better ? Right there ?
Can you hear me now ? Right , for you guys , as you approach this post back then , what we have to understand is that we approach these post backs thinking to ourselves oh my gosh , it's going to be fast paced , it's going to be fast-paced , it's going to be difficult .
I've got to have the study skills in place , I'm going to have the discipline in place and I've got to give my absolute all to make it happen , because this is a challenging environment if I'm going to be successful . So you have to move .
Do we understand that Outside of the classroom there's going to be lots of requirements , lots of requirements that can dilute and spread you thin across your ability to perform ? In the post-bac program this happens and this is so important . These post-bac programs have requirements and they have recommendations , and as students , we're taught to just rotely follow .
And I always tell my students ignore everything , challenge everything , challenge the status quo , so that way you can be successful In a post-bac program . When they tell you , hey , you must take this course , load , you also must be involved in our XYZ MCAT course . You also must go to these events , you also must shadow , you also must do this .
They're putting all these things on you . It's important that you push back when it becomes too much . And actually even before it becomes too much , we wanna push back . We wanna say , listen , that's not going to work for me , I'm going to be unsuccessful . Put it to them in that way and they will work with you .
Recognize that when they say , hey , you're in this program , we expect you to take the MCAT in May , at the end of this program . It's one of the biggest gripes I have with postdoc programs is they force their students to take the MCAT before they're done with the program . And I'm like guys , your coursework is designed to be rigorous enough .
Why would you add the pressure of them doing MCAT on top of that ? Now they're spread between two different things . Now their MCAT score's not as good as it could have been , their post-bac grades are not as good as it could have been , and it's a problem , problem , problem , problem , problem everywhere . Don't rush the process . Worst comes .
Listen , I couldn't take the MCAT , I can't do it , I'm not ready , and just push it . The other thing is the application . A lot of post-bac programs require you to be preparing your application and submitting your application because they provide application workshops and so forth .
But it's imperative that you guys again don't get so focused on the application that you dilute your MCAT and you dilute your post-bac experience .
So talk to your program , work with them , let them understand where you live and where you're at and how things are going , so that way you can facilitate , you can create , you're prepared for success , as opposed to purposely sabotaging yourself , knowing I'm not doing well mentally , I'm not doing well in my classes , I'm not doing well in the MCAT , I'm not doing
well in the application , and it's just a big farce . And then you burned one of your application cycles the money , the time , the emotional part of it applying to medical school when you knew you weren't ready . So don't put yourself in that predicament , guys .
To avoid this , the way we do it is is we make sure that , a we're ready to handle the rigors of this program , but then , b we create an effective study schedule , a structured study schedule and timeline of the program . Are you seeing a theme here ? Right , these realistic timelines . We establish a timeline for the program and we knock down the dominoes .
So we say , okay , I know the MCAT's gonna be coming up , so I'm gonna slowly , every single week a few hours , mix in some MCAT prep during the first year of my post-bac program , even though the MCAT's two years away .
I'm going to take the time mix in some of that MCAT prep so that way I can right , instead of being a steep learning curve for the MCAT , it's going to be a smoother curve because I've established a foundation . Oh , you know what , when I have time during the breaks , I'm going to start writing some of my application .
That way , start writing some of my application that way . It's not left for my last semester of this post back program when I'm very busy , very stressed out things going on . I'm going to have this timeline where I slot everything into timelines .
I'm going to look at what this post back program requires of me and I'm going to see if something already doesn't seem like it fits . I'm going to talk to them early , before I get into trouble , before I have to backpedal , before my house is on fire . I'm going to go to them and say , hey , keep me from catching on fire .
Y'all Put a fire hydrant here , stop me from doing this . Right , we're going to go and talk to them . We're going to look at what our own expectations are and see what's realistic for us . So if we know we are a student who suffers from test anxiety many of my students do we recognize that it application at once .
So we're going to tell ourselves you know what ? I'm not going to apply this cycle . I'm going to wait . I'm going to do this post-bac program use the summer to study for MCAT , take my MCAT sometime in the fall and then I'm going to apply next year so I can space everything out , have the time I need , bring my anxiety level down and be successful .
Right , we've we've done three episodes this month on performance anxiety for students . It's such an important topic . I actually started a whole new course . I just launched a course for you guys , super affordable right now you can check . I'll put the link in the after this . I'll put the link in the description .
But I launched a whole course on overcoming performance anxiety of students . It's comprehensive , it's amazing , but it's powerful . Guys , it's a problem . So understanding how to deal with our anxiety will create success in your life . If you can manage your anxiety , manage that buildup , you're going to be so much more successful .
So we want to create the schedule to help ourselves . The other thing is that we want to have prioritization in order . Not everything is equally important . If you're in a post-bac program , your GPA may be a problem , but you also may have other gaps in your application .
You may be lacking research , you may be lacking clinical experience , you may be lacking leadership , whatever it might be . What's cool about post-bac programs is they have support for you in these programs to fill some of these gaps . However , not everything is equally important to your candidacy to medical school . Research is not the most important thing .
You'd be much better served spending that time if you have to choose getting your grades right , getting the MCAT right and getting the clinical experience Only if you have additional time then do you add the research on . Does that make sense ? So you have to prioritize what you need to do and what will ask yourself .
