Alright , guys , it is early 2024 . You have just started your term here , about to start your term , and you're trying to make this the best term yet and the best year yet to launch your career . How do we set our goals ? How do we start making progress towards our goals ? Well , this is the video , guys . That breaks it all down .

So I want you guys to check out this intro and we'll get right to it . But stop making excuses , stop whining , stop Right , get at it . No excuses , just dominate . Alright , guys , dr Rangir Pines here , the pre-med product expert , and , like I said , today we're talking about goal setting for 2024 .

Right , it is the year All your hopes and dreams hinge on this year , don't you feel like every year ? I feel like every year , everything hinges on this year . Well , it truly does , because you'll never get this year back . So how do we make the most of it ? How do we set our goals ? How do we reach those goals ?

Well , a lot of people talk to you about smart goals , right ? Specific , measurable , attainable , realistic , timely or whatever time or time , or even now , who cares about that ? Everyone will teach you that , what I think the missing pieces are , or what we're going to talk about today , because everyone you can watch any video on smart goals Today .

We're going to go beyond that . We're going to step up a level from that , and the first step that I think , even before making our immediate short-term goals that a lot of people miss out on , is understanding and getting clear on what our long-term goal is .

For many of you you're watching this video , you're on my channel because you're a pre-med , you're a college student . For many of you guys , your goal is to become a doctor . Cool , that's your goal , that's your dream of your life .

But for a lot of people , we stop there , we don't really get clear on that vision , and the reason it's so important to get clear right , I call it clarity of vision on our dream , on our big goal , our life goal , is because that thing is so far away that if it's murky and if it's blurry , it will not be more motivating to us than the immediate pleasures

of doing the wrong thing right now . And so , for many of us , what keeps us from reaching our goals and reaching our dream ?

I tell everyone anybody can get into medical school , but not everyone will , and the separator are the people who get into medical school , the people who don't quit and who are focused and determined and do the things required to get into medical school . So we need to lose focus and do the wrong things . So how do we make ourselves do the right things ?

How do we stay focused ? We get clear on what that means . What does becoming a doctor mean to you ? What does graduating college mean to you , to your family , to your community , whatever it might be ?

We have to get clear on that , we have to write it down , we have to be able to see it , we have to be able to feel it as we pop up to us , so that we can be motivated and stay on track . For me , I said I want to become a doctor At that time . Right , I didn't have any doctors in my family when I started college .

I had no doctors in my family . I still had no doctors in my family , but I had no family or even graduated college . And so when I started college , yes , I had this big dream of going to medical school , but I had no idea really what that meant and I couldn't really see it . But it became very clear to me what that was .

Earlier I wasn't clear on it and I was messing up , and so I had to get clear on it , because I had to become more consistent as a student . I had become more focused as a student , and so I had to get clear on what becoming a doctor meant to me .

For me , what becoming a doctor meant was not having to struggle the way my parents did to put food on the table for my brother and I . What becoming a doctor meant that I could have a career I could be proud of , right , that I could love to go to every day where I'm making a difference and people's lives .

For me , becoming a doctor meant being a black face that other black faces could see and look to and say you know what he looks like me , right ? He's gone through hardships , he got it done . I can get it done too .

So it was all these things that were motivating to me , and so I got clear on really what that meant , and I could visualize it in my eye , making an impact , like I do right now in these videos for you guys . And because of that , when things got hard , when I said you know what I got to get the studying done ?

Oh my gosh , I don't feel like studying . I really go party . I would snap back to my clear vision of what my long-term goal was . And so , even though it was far away , it became so much more rewarding than going to that party , because I could see my future kids' eyes looking at me with admiration , as my kids do now .

I could see students telling me hey , dr Pines , I got in the medical school because of you , dr Pines . I made these changes because you believed in me and I believed in you . I saw that , and so that was the motivation , the driver for me . So that clear vision is the first step , guys , if you want to attain your goals in 2024 .

Now that we have that long-term clear vision , the second thing we must do is we must create landmarks , we must create goal posts along that journey . So now I have . If I'm a college student , I say , okay , you want to be a doctor ? That's 10 years away Okay , I got a little residency . I got to go to medical school .

Okay , I got to get into medical school Okay , so I got to finish college . So now we can start marking out these big goal posts and landmarks of our lives and then , for each of those landmarks , we can then break that down further to see okay , what goals should I have for this time period to be ready to advance and get to that goal post successfully ?

And so for you guys , as college students , as pre-mands , what are based off those landmarks ? Find those landmarks , identify them and then say , okay , wait , what's the most current , what we march it back and what's the closest to us landmark we can identify and how can we be ready for that landmark .

And so for you guys , right , it's early 2024 , maybe your next landmark up is hey , into this semester . So by summertime , what do I want to have in place going on ? That's now our landmark . So now we set up goals for this period . What a lot of people make the mistake of doing when they make these goals is that they treat all these goals as equal .

And what happens ? We get overwhelmed Like I do this , I gotta do this , I gotta do this , I gotta do this . No , no , no , no . We must stop that overwhelm . So what we must do before we make these goals is we must prioritize .

We must say to ourselves , we must segment our lives and say wait for this time period , for this landmark , what is the priority , what is the central things that must be accomplished ?

One or more things , and then let's make all our goals centric to that and then , if we have time , if we have energy , if we have opportunities , then we'll get to some other goals that would be nice to have but are must have . So there's a difference .

Right when I was told by my freshman college counselor I would never get into medical school , I had to sit down and get that clarity of vision like I talked about Then . Once I was clear on why it matters so much for you to battle through it , I didn't set those landmarks up .

And so here I am , going through my freshman year and I'm ending my freshman year being told I'm on a flunk out of college . And I said , okay , listen , my next landmark up is that I need to do well this next sophomore year . And so I said , okay , listen , this is my next landmark . But school classes don't start for a couple months .

What should I do in the summer ? Well , in the summer I need to be getting my study skills together . I need to be getting myself time managed and scheduled appropriately .

So I spent a lot of time learning about setting , a lot of time learning about time management , a lot of time learning about how to make effective schedules , and then I started working my schedule , building my schedule in the summer , treating it like it was the fall semester , so the fall quarter , and so that way , when fall quarter started , I had already

started progressing . And so when I reached that landmark post of starting the semester , I was ready , when I reached the end of that semester , being a great student .

It all started because I mapped all these things out and I was clear on the priorities , like , yes , I can get extracurricular , I can do all the stuff , but no , for me , I gotta stay in school , I can't flunk out , so I'm gonna focus on the studying aspects . And so for you guys , as students , you do the same thing .

So let's just say , right now , I'm a junior in college . It's early in 2024 . So if you're a junior this year , that means you'll be graduating in of 2025 . Yay , hurrah . It's amazing , right ? How do we make sure that we are in a position to graduate in 2025 ?

And then we can want to submit our application for medical school , maybe in middle of 2025 , that summer . If we're gonna be applying then or graduating , then that means we're gonna take the MCAT in the spring of 2025 , okay , so now I've got that on the calendar . Okay , now get rid of the MCAT . I'm gonna have to have focus time .

I'm gonna have to have other obligations . Actually , there's off my plate , okay . So I must make sure that I wrap up my research before then . But you know what ? I also wanna be president of my club . So maybe you say to yourself okay , listen , that means in this next six months here in 2024 , I'm gonna wrap up my research by the summer of 2024 .

That way , for my entire senior year , the research is already done . I got the publication . It's off my plate For 2024 , 2025 , as I go up to graduation , I'm gonna be focused on being the club president . I'm gonna be focused on increasing my hospital volunteer hours .

So that way I have incredible stuff to write about in my application , about my knowledge of what being a doctor is and my experience in the clinical setting . So we're gonna shift . So right , so I'm gonna okay . So now in the six months , all research , all the time after school . The same time I know the MCAT is coming up next year .

So academically , my priority is to start creating some MCAT notes , to start thinking about the MCAT , to start improving my study skills such that when it comes time for the MCAT focused period of time .

I have some MCAT notes ready and I am a capable studier , so that way I can sit down and learn things and be ready for the MCAT , and so we create these goals for ourselves . Does that make sense to everybody ? Does it make sense to you right now ? If you're enjoying this video , take a second . Like this video right now , comment let me know .

The last thing I'll say when it comes to goals right is that when you make these goals , recognize that they're not set in stone and it's important that we are constantly assessing where we are in terms of reaching our goals successfully and that we are constantly making adjustments . So assessments and then adjustments based on those .

For me , I like to every single day . I don't want to let errors stack up . So every single day of the day of my day , before I go to bed , I sit down and I write down . I look at hey , did I stick to my schedule today ? Hey , when I was thinking about my schedule . Was I actually being effective in these things ?

Hey , is this how I should have spent my day ? And then I look at what I have for tomorrow and I make adjustments to be more successful the next day .

Then , at the end of each week , I look at the week and I reflect in aggregate and say wait a minute , this week , what could have been done better , what needs to be adjusted for next week , and so forth . At the end of every big exam I have a midterm or final . I look at what I did in that class and I make adjustments for the next thing .

Same thing for the term . Okay , let's determine I had this goal to get straight A's . I didn't get there . What stopped me ? And I make adjustments that way I can meet that goal the next term .

Huge mistakes to make with goals they set a goal and then , when they're not on track , they don't make the adjustments until it's too late and they just reestablish the goal . Reestablish the goal . No , we've got to assess , make adjustments , assess , make adjustments and that's how we reach our goals . Guys , listen , listen , listen .
