What is up guys ? Dr Pinesit , here we are , live action , as we do on Wednesdays at 4.30 pm Pacific time , and today we're talking about being stuck . How many of you guys , as pre-meds , as students , are stuck ?
I would argue that most of you are stuck and you don't even realize it , sometimes in small ways , sometimes in big ways , but you are definitely stuck .
And one of the key things , if you guys wanna change your life and turn things around , as I did , is that you have to get unstuck , you have to let go of much of what we believe , and so I'm gonna hit the intro and then we're gonna get right into it . Guys , stop making excuses , stop whining , stop right , get at it . No excuses , just dominate .
All right , guys . Like I said , dr Pinesit here , josh Sean , hello , okay , I've gotta be quick and brief today because I have MCAT coaching with my MCAT students in 12 minutes , so we got less than 12 minutes to get to this .
This is kind of an impromptu live today , because there's learning everywhere in our lives , so we have to look for it , we have to learn from it , and so today I have kids . If you guys don't know right , I'm old now . I'm an anesthesiologist , I got a family , I got young kids , and with young kids comes tantrums . And what's interesting is being a parent .
I realize now that even though little kids throw tantrums , we as adults throw tantrums all the time with ourselves , mostly right . We fight ourselves with ourselves or angle our situation and sometimes we just get so frustrated , so overwhelmed we just like , ah , we spaz out . That's what a tantrum really is right .
And so my son was having a tantrum earlier today because he was mad because I was saying he had to do some homework that he felt like he didn't have to do because the teacher didn't explicitly tell him he had to do it . Even though the teacher gave it to me and told me , hey , have him do this , she didn't tell him that .
So then he was making that argument with me . And so the lesson from this for you guys ? I think it's great , because how many of you guys sometimes you know deep down things you have to do and you argue with yourself about having to do them , like , ah , I don't have to do that , I can't do that , I can't overcome right .
Or oh , you know what , I have this ADHD or have this disability and I can't overcome it , so I'm stuck in it , or you know what ? I messed up so bad I'll never be able to come back from this .
Or someone's telling you hey , you're doing the wrong thing , you got a course correct , and you don't listen , you're stuck , you're fixed in a mindset , in a perspective about things , and we often fail to recognize that , a that belief isn't helpful , but , b that that belief is not grounded in reality , it's grounded in mythical .
Out there it's nothing , it's not real . And so what I encourage all of you guys to do is to recognize that we all have these little fixed things , and often it comes from our prior experience .
And so if you are a student who has underperformed , or you are a pre-med who isn't getting the results you want , we have to recognize that our opinion of ourself , our opinion of our ability , our opinion of what is possible , our opinion of reality , may be skewed , colored , by a lens of our past failure , of our past experience . Right , it was interesting .
I had a patient tell me today that they were everything comes together , that they in the past and actually I just thought of this right now because it came up they in the past had a patient tell me that in the past they felt like female doctors were not as smart as male doctors , and that the surgeon I was working with today was female , and so that was
encouraging to them . Like , oh my gosh , I'm so surprised by your capability because you are a female physician , and in the past female physicians have not been as strong as they're and smart as their male counterparts . And so I explained that that is a fixed mindset .
I was like , oh my gosh , like no , that's just like one experience you had with a female doctor that maybe wasn't up to par and that can happen , but it could be a male doctor , female doctors , it doesn't do with her sex and it's everything to do with her knowledge base .
And so for you guys , as students , recognize this and realize this that we often think about things based on experiences . So the way to change this , if you are stuck in a certain mindset , in a certain view , is to start using real life , real world evidence to build the case for what's going to serve you . Karen , hello , mayor , what's up ?
We have to use factual evidence to build a case to change our mindset , to change how we see things , and so , with my son , I try to use some facts that change his mind and , for you guys use the facts of the case . So if you think , oh , you know what , I have ADHD , so argument , I keep getting .
I have video ADHD on my channel and I keep getting students who keep commenting on this video . This is not helpful . You don't understand , doesn't matter what I do with my ADHD , I can't succeed , I can't focus , I'm distracted . I don't even need anything to distract me , I'm just distracted . And they don't understand that . That's a perspective , that's a mindset .
That's not true . But that's what they believe about their ADHD . They believe their ADHD has them in a chokehold that they can't escape . And I would tell you guys that every chokehold I have so many students and it was funny I was telling my students on . I had pre-med coaching last night .
I was on my system pre-med coaching last night About this happening on this 8 HD video and they were cracking up because they were like , hey , spencer is the example that that is not true and that you can't overcome it HD , because he is overcoming HD with your strategies .
And it's a perfect example because now Spencer is not only Overcome his 8 HD , done well on the MCAT , done well in his undergrad , he's now gotten into medical school just this past few weeks and now he's getting Full-ride offers from some of his medical schools acceptances .
And so here you have a student who has 8 HD , who listened to me , followed the steps , followed the process laid out my five pillager study last year , but a great course and has been able to get the grades , get the MCAT , get the medical school and even get a full ride and so , but what it took was right , and it was one of the early discussions we
would have on study coaching is that he had this belief that , oh , I can't do this , oh I can't really focus , oh I can't improve my score , and so I had to really work them a lot and yell at him a lot to say Spencer , focus , you're better than that , I believe in you , you got this and through my encouragement and through the strategies , he's been able
to succeed . And For all of you guys , look at ways in your life that you have a fixed mind . So if you have a belief pattern that isn't serving you and helping you get to medical school , how can you get the a and attack it with the facts ? And so what's been , sir ? I said , hey , you perform polygynetic , he's going on .
So I said , okay , let's look at the facts of your life . You said you distracted what's going on ? And we looked at all the things that were distractors . And then we looked at okay , so when are you most distracted , when are you least focused ?
And we look at all these facts , these factual things , and then we shifted and modified the schedule , the approach , all of these things , based on those factors , to create a factual , realistically based Schedule and approach to studying that works . And so for you guys , whatever you're struggling with , you can do the same thing .
So if you're like , oh my gosh , I've messed up so much in my grades I can't get in medical school , no , that's not the answer . That's what we want to . That's right . That's that false belief . We instead want to tell ourselves what , how can I replace these grades ? How can I do better ? Okay , listen , it starts with learning how to study .
Then it starts with enrolling in Smaller amount of classes . That way have an opportunity to prove myself , to build my confidence , to work on my skills , and then I amp up and build more classes and take more classes , and take more classes until I build that GPA .
It's not about repeating the pattern of taking too many classes , not knowing how to say we're gonna break that pattern and then we get the different result . Yeah , so I hope you guys enjoyed this quick live stream . I got a run because I get over to MCAT coaching , but thank you guys for joining me today .
As always on Dr Renterpindset , this is the pre-med productivity podcast and I hope that you guys can take away something from today to attack your fixed mindset and get yourself in a better place . Thanks guys .
