Episode description

Can mastering delayed gratification help you excel in college and still enjoy your social life? Balancing the demands of a rigorous pre-med track with the need for downtime can seem impossible, but in this episode, we uncover actionable strategies and real-life examples to make it work. We address the critical need to plan for future goals without falling into the trap of burnout and explore how to integrate immediate enjoyment into a productive life cycle. Our goal is to help you not just survive but thrive in college by finding a healthy balance between work and play.

Ever wondered how to have the best time at college parties without a drop of alcohol? Drawing from personal anecdotes from my own college days at UC Irvine, I share the art of maximizing social enjoyment by choosing the right activities. We discuss the importance of front-loading your studies before big events and explore other rejuvenating activities, like engaging in sports, to keep your mind sharp. Our aim is to help you enjoy your social life to the fullest while staying on top of your academic responsibilities.

Learn to prioritize your personal well-being by setting boundaries and making intentional choices. In this chapter, we emphasize the Joy of Consciously Opting Out (Joko) to combat the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). By consciously selecting activities that truly bring joy and fulfillment, and learning to say no when necessary, you can manage your time more effectively. We also highlight the importance of prioritizing personal relationships, helping you foster a balanced and enjoyable life.

Each week, I’m bringing strategies for:

💪 Locking in that bulletproof mindset.

⏰ Cutting the nonsense and getting productive.

🧠 Studying smarter, not harder.

🩺 Streamlining your path to med school.

If you're serious about medicine, this is where you need to be!!

Guys , live action , live action . Dr Pines , here and today , I'm excited , fresh off vacation with the family , to talk about balancing your social life and balancing your work right , your students , balancing your classes . This is something that so many students struggle with .

So I'm glad to talk to you about it , because , if you can figure this out and you can figure out how to balance , here's what I wanna do socially . Here's what I wanna do in the classroom . Here's what I want to do socially . Here's what I want to do in the classroom . Here's my aspirations career-wise .

It's huge , guys , and allows you not just to survive college , not just survive pre-med , but actually thrive as you go through the process . So , as we go through this , as always , it's a live session , so it's interactive . Take a second comment right now .

Let me know if you're struggling with this , let me know what about it you're struggling with , what questions you have around this . That way , we can make sure I'm here right to serve you guys , we can make sure we hit on the issues that you guys care about right here , right now .

So I'm going to hit the intro , I'm going to get right into it , guys , but stop making excuses , stop whining , stop right , get at it . No excuses , just dominate . All righty guys . Dr Arne Pinesett here , the pre pro-expert , and , as always , what are we here to do , guys ? Can everybody hear me ? We're at live action . We are here to help you guys succeed .

To be more positive , to be more productive is that those two things go together . The positivity of our life and the productivity of our life are two things , the yin and the yang that come together to make us whole individuals who are productive , who are successful , who can get ahead .

And so today we're talking about balancing your classes , your extracurricular activities , with the social point , and we're gonna bring a lot of actionable strategies . Today I got a couple exercises for you guys to help you guys actually action this immediately . Nico , thank you , let me know you can hear me . Shani , let me know you can hear me . I appreciate that .

So we're not all alone here today .

But the very first thing we're gonna go through three main points , and the first point I want to talk about is understanding delayed gratification , how it fits into your life and how you can tweak that concept of delayed gratification to really maximize the enjoyment of your journey , of your pathway to becoming the physician , to becoming an accessible career person ,

wherever you want to be , all right . And so when we talk about delayed gratification , it's kind of similar what's happening right now when people talk about savings , where people are like fire , fire , fireman , eat saltines and retire early , and it's like I don't know if that's really the mission it . It's the same way with our academics .

We talk about this delayed gratification . Delayed gratification For most of you guys , as students . For most students , the issue is not that we're too into delayed gratification , it's that we fail to recognize the significance and the importance of delayed gratification . We're all about that instant right . What feels good now , oh , that feels good now .

So we procrastinate , put off the work that we should do today that will serve us tomorrow in lieu of fun today . That's going to make us pained tomorrow . We've got to flip that right .

But then there are students many of you guys are maybe there , maybe you , if you've been on my channel , if you've been on my website , right , if you've been listening to me , you understand the power and the potency of delayed gratification and how . Without understanding that we must .

We must act and work and think with tomorrow in mind , with our dream , first and foremost , in our mind . If we understand that then our focus is delayed gratification .

But it can be easy sometimes to take it too far to where you think that if you're having fun , that if you have joy in your life , that if you're happy right now , you're doing the wrong thing . And I see it all the time . I go out to these talks and I just look in students' eyes and you guys , some of you guys , look dead .

In your hearts , in your souls , everything about you has been worn down and tattered and it's because you're like no , no gratification today it's all work , no , play , all work , all work . We can't do that . We have to understand that we are human beings and the human beings we live in a cyclical life cycle .

We have ups , we have downs , we have highs , we have lows , we have rest , we have work . You must ride the waves of the up and down and if you don't , then your life quickly right . If you don't have that balance of work and play , your life quickly gets out of balance , out of whack . We feel it . And what happens y'all ? What happens All that ?

Oh , I'm just dry , I'm grinding , I'm grinding , I'm grinding , I'm grinding . What happens ? How do we feel ? What happens to us ? Right , and Isaiah , just put in the box right now , he said . One doc told me this balance stuff doesn't exist .

You just do whatever you got to whenever you got to do it , and that's a bad way to think about it , that's a survivor's mentality , and what today's about is getting to a thriver's mentality , not surviving the day , thriving today , thriving right now and in terms of your physician life .

Guys , I did a video last month , right A couple weeks back , talking about work-life balance as a physician in your career . Today we're talking about as a student specifically . And so here , right , when we delay all the gratification , I love it .

Thank you , guys for commenting in the box there , right , eventual burnout , right , julian says I'm right on time with this message . Thank you for letting me know . If this is right on time for you guys , take a second , like this video right now . Let me know that I'm right on time with your message right now . Feeling crispy , right , that burnout , right .

Feeling like you wanna give up , like why am I doing this ? Feeling depressed . Thank you for sharing , guys . These are the feelings that we have because it's all work , it's all grind and the problem with saying , oh , you know what I'm going to enjoy myself , right ? This is what happened .

When we talk about all blade gratification , the very first thing that happens is right , and we must recognize listen to me guys , this is so crucial is that we tell ourselves oh , you know what , I'll enjoy myself when I get here , I'll be happy when I get here , I'll do this , win this . My life is meant to be lived .

At this point , I'm not going to live and have my head down under a rock until I get to this point .

And the problem is is that we fail to recognize and I hope you guys get this message today you will never be freer than you are right here right now , today , listening to this video , anyone listening to this video , even if you're a doctor right now , you will never be freer than you are in this exact moment . And we have to recognize that .

As young students , I know you feel like , oh gosh , I got all this on me , I got this on me , I got this on me .

But you have to recognize , as you advance through your career , all that happens is you have more professional responsibilities , you have more personal responsibilities , you have more life , happenstance , occurrence , people depending on you and so forth , and so you will never be as free as you are today . Right In college , right , I can remember this .

Right , you got small bills . You're like , oh , I don't pay for these books , books , I wish I only had to pay for books . Right , you have loose relationships Like , oh , I'm kind of seeing someone and they like to hang out on Fridays . Loose affiliations I'm married , y'all . I got real stuff going on . I got kids . Right Back then in college .

Nobody depends on your money . If anybody goes hungry , it's just you . Right , if I don't do my job , my kids go hungry . And I want you guys to learn I'm an old gray beer having cat . I'm an old anesthesiologist . Take it from me . I know right now you seem tied up , but you're free .

I look at my pre-kids , pre-marriage self and I look at myself like , man , you was a slacker . Yes , you worked . Yes , you worked , you got in a Stanford medical school . But man , that was a slacker who was going to college . What did you do with all that free time ? You could have been doing even more crazy stuff .

So recognize that you got to enjoy your journey right now . Take the time right now . And the other part about this is it's not just the fact of being free now , it's the mentality of it .

If you fail to recognize and take advantage of the free time you could have right now , and take advantage of the free time you could have right now , as you get busier , you'll only feel busier and busier and busier , and so you will never see yourself being free . It's a mind shift . It's a perspective of freedom and flexibility .

To create joy in your life , you must craft that joy . So that's the first thing . The second part of this is that we have to recognize that if we aren't having fun in our lives , people see oh , you know what , if I take a day off and I do something for me , I'm falling behind . No , no guys .

If you take a day for you , if you take some time to have fun , you are moving yourself forward , because the balance is not a luxury , it's not just something like , oh , you should have , it's something you must have , because that's how you avoid the burnout , and even before the burnout . Here's how it goes .

If we're trying to be successful , trying to be high-level , high-performance students in the classroom , how can we be successful ? How can we find motivation ? How many of you guys struggle with motivation ? We can't be motivated to do the hard work if we don't reward ourselves with the joy . The only reason we work hard is to have joy after the fact .

I don't go to work if there's not a check at the end of the day . I don't go to work . If there's not a smiling patient to make me feel good , I ain't going to work . I need a reward and for many of you guys as students , if you're lacking motivation , maybe it's because you haven't done anything to incentivize yourself .

Oh , I'm just going to slave away today and do these classes and then later on I'm just going to be all nervous and upset and anxious and then I'm just going to keep working until I die . Where's the incentive ? Where's the motivation ?

We have to tie the hard work with the rejuvenation , with the things that jumpstart us and get our batteries back going and make us feel like working , things that jumpstart us and get our batteries back going and make us feel like working .

Plus , then , after we do the work and we feel worn down , we use the joy , we use the fun to recharge us and actually get us back to full strength . Does that make sense , y'all ? So we lose on all sides if we don't build in this fun . We have to enjoy the life right now and when you guys go to enjoy your life .

This is something that I think a lot of people don't touch on . This is something that I think a lot of people don't touch on . My life is amazing . It has been amazing even since college . It's been an amazing life .

It started off really sucky , but it got really great , and one of the reasons it got great was because I made sure that not only did I do the smartest work possible , did I not have the best study strategies ? Did I not focus on the best resources ? Did I not do all my pre-med extracical curriculars the way I wanted to do them ?

But I also made sure that everything that wasn't professional all my personal life , was also optimized . When I'm talking about fun , you got to pick something that is the most fun for you . You have to pick activities that don't tear you down but instead build you up , and I see this constantly where students go . Oh yeah , I did take time off from studying .

Well , what did you do over that time ? Oh well , I talked to my mom , who was always on my case about not having to take the MCAT yet . Oh well , I went to my other job as a break from studying what ? How was that reward ? Oh , you know what ?

We have to pick things in our free time that actually are going to restore us , rejuvenate us and build us up and not tear us down . And the biggest one and we're seeing kind of a societal change in this , but the biggest one that I see students fall into the trap of is partying incorrectly .

And when I say partying incorrectly , I mean depending on booze and alcohol and recreational medications prescription medications to have fun . How many of you guys I want to ask you to call it yourself how many of you guys have a friend who is zero fun until they've had their third drink ? They's zero fun until they've had their recreational drug of choice .

How many guys know that person ? They can't relax , they can't have fun unless they are sloppily drunk . How many of you guys know people like this ? Don't let that be you guys . You shouldn't need alcohol to enjoy your social events and social activities . If you do , it means you are picking the wrong activities .

You should be able to enjoy your activities sober . Does everybody understand what I'm saying right now ? If you need alcohol or drugs to enjoy your recreational fun time , you are not doing the right activities . You shouldn't need the alcohol .

And I say this to you yes , I'm old , I get it , but even when I was young , guys , if you're blacking out constantly , you're not even remembering . You can't even remember the fun when you're studying . You can't even remember the next day . Plus , if you're hungover or you're blacking out constantly , you're not even remembering .

You can't even remember the fun when you're studying . You can't even remember it the next day . Plus , if you're hungover or you're slowed down , whatever , you're obtuse because of what you said , it's no good academically , but worse , it's like it's not what it is . And I'm someone for me , I made sure that I had lots of fun in college .

I worked hard Monday through Thursday , sunday night , monday , tuesday , wednesday , thursday . Then when Friday hit , friday afternoon , it was party time . 48 straight hours , friday afternoon till Sunday . I am partying my gosh darn face off . I'm everywhere . I went to college at UC Irvine , home of the ferocious antedilute zot , zot , zot .

We would drive up to USC hit parties at USC , go to UCLA hit parties , drive all the way up to Santa Barbara party our faces off . All gosh darn weekend . And I did all of it sober . Yes , there were plenty of sloppy people around me , but I was sober guys . I didn't have my first alcoholic drink until I was 22 years old . I went to all the parties .

I saw all the kegs , but I was there sober and it was so awesome to be able to . I can still remember all the good times and the memories and everything and it served me so well because I could go party my face off and come back the next day and still be sharp , and still be sharp . I literally can remember .

I remember one year Halloween fell on a Wednesday . Me and a couple of my buddies drove up to Santa Barbara and , if you guys don't know , uc Santa Barbara is an amazing party school , but in particular , halloween Santa Barbara is hot fire . Okay , it's incredible . You guys , everyone , have a great time . You're young people . I'm too old now .

Well , young people , santa Barbara , halloween , it's legendary . We drove up there Wednesday , partied our butts off . On Wednesday I had a biochemistry test . Thursday morning we drove back from Santa Barbara . It's not a close drive , it's like four hours-ish , three and a half hours . We drove back in the middle of the night , it's like three in the morning .

We drove back . My buddies literally dropped me off . Dropped me off in front of the lecture hall . I had a pen and I went in and at that time I was a scan shot . I didn't have a pencil . I had to go in and ask for a pencil to take my advanced biochemistry exam the day after Halloween .

And what's important about this and this is the next point I want to get to about this is A you can do those activities , you can have fun , you can do these things , you can do it sober because you can function the next day .

But , more importantly , guys , what would allow me to go and party my face off all night and then come back and do my biochemistry exam ? It was me thinking ahead . And so what I want for you guys is is you to think about it that way and to have scheduled right , optimized fun time .

So if you want to enjoy , say , some of you guys have an exam on a Monday you're like , oh , it's going to mess up my whole weekend . No , it doesn't mess up your whole weekend . Think ahead and say listen , I want that weekend for me , so I'm going to get ahead .

Right , julian said front-loading , I'm going to front-load , I'm going to be two , three days a week ahead of my class . That way I'm going to treat myself , not like the exams on Monday , like the exams on Friday . That way Saturday and Sunday I can party my face off and go to my test conference on Monday .

So when I knew Halloween was on a Wednesday and it says on Thursday , I worked before that I'm working hard so that way I can break out of there . Wednesday , go party , come back on Thursday , I'm prepared and I get the A in the class .

So I want you guys to plan your fun , not only the activities you do , but I want you to plan ahead so that way you can enjoy those activities . Stop doing that . I see this . I took my computer to the party , I took my flashcard to the party . Oh , I was going to study after the party . You're not doing that stuff , y'all .

So set yourself up to maximize that enjoyment and maximize your social activities to make them as fun as humanly possible . Does everybody see what I'm saying ? Maybe you don't party . What are some other activities that you guys enjoy doing ? Right ? How else can you build yourself up in your social life ? What other things rejuvenate you guys ?

How do you guys take the edge off ? How do you guys get the battery back going sharp so you can come back in and study hard , right ? I already mentioned partying . That was my number one , right ? Some other things that I really enjoyed are sports , right . So I always loved sports .

And so in college I would actually go to the batting cages , and if you guys ever been to the batting cages or play baseball , you know there's nothing better than man just getting a good . You just swing in and just like a good stroke on a ball , woo , like you just light it up .

But it was so awesome to go to the batting cages because you can just swing and all that tension , all that aggression you had , you just take it out on the ball . Take it out on the ball , you leave those cages .

Man , my shoulders are relaxed because I've done that physical thing to get all that aggression , get all that pent up rage out of me , so I can go back and calm and sit and do my stuff . Right , nico says skateboarding , lifting weights , right , being physical like I was just talking about , right .

The other physicality I loved was basketball , right , when I was like man , I need to blow off some steam . I go play some pickup basketball . Hey , who's running , let me get on the team . And I'm taking all my frustration , all my woes , all my anger , I'm taking it out on the court . I'm not even dunking .

I'm not even dunking on it , I don't even care , I'm throwing it at the rim , whatever is happening , because it's getting that energy out right , that competitive fire . It's lighting me up . And it was also cool just kind of getting around some people and see some people who didn't have all the stress that I felt like I had in my life .

I could see a lot of people like , oh , they're enjoying life , I can enjoy life too and doing the other thing I like doing that was relaxing . I like going to the beach and walking the beach y'all . If you guys don't live on a coast , get to a coast right . Dijon's in Miami , dijon , I saw your email today . I'm sorry , man , I just saw your email .

I would have known Next time I'm in Miami we're going to eat together . But if you live on a coast , getting to the beach , putting your toes in the sand , and so going to the beach , walking around , sitting down , listening to the waves , watching the sunset , it's wonderfully relaxing .

When you are really , really stressed out and feeling like , oh , I can't , I can't go on from this day , just reset everything , get it all right for yourself . Ok , yeah , julian backed me up to go hooping , right , oh , and Dejohn said bike ride to the beach , watch the sunrise . Yep , there it is . There , it is All right . So does everybody get that ?

We're trying to enjoy the journey and I just want to put an exclamation mark on this , to kind of point this out . I just mentioned this guy just popped to me as Dejohn talked about this being in Miami .

No-transcript , things will fade away and just every day is awesome and for me , this has been a staple of my life and continue to be a staple of my life , and it was evidenced actually today when my wife texted me a photo album , because you know how your iPhone puts together photos of , on this day , whatever . Blah , blah , blah .

And the iPhone put together a little sample to let us know hey , listen , this is a big day and it was our anniversary photos .

And so my wife and I allegedly we just had our 12th wedding anniversary yesterday and it's hilarious because neither one of us knew that yesterday was our anniversary and we laughed and we texted and we're doing double jinx back and forth because we were texting and I was like dang , I'm like must mean that every day is a celebration .

It must mean that we love each other every single day , and that's what it is is we take time out . Like I said , we're spontaneously in Miami just for fun . Like , hey , like last week , I got an extra day off on Friday . I'm going to be out of a clinic early . You want to go do something ? Let's do something .

Oh , kids want to go to Miami , let's go to Miami . Boom , and we just flew to Miami spontaneously . And so when you build fun in , when you build celebration in , when you build those social balance in , it's amazing because the grind doesn't seem like a grind . You don't need to look ahead to a vacation , you don't need to look ahead to a holiday . Why ?

Because every day is a gosh darn holiday . Every day is made special by the way you treat it , by how you look to suck all the joy and all the juice and all the love and all the amazingness , all the laughter out of every single day . That way , you're too busy celebrating every day to care about one day and it just all goes together .

So , happy anniversary to my wife . I remember it , of course , obviously , but get to the point where you're having so much fun in your day . You don't know . You're like , oh , holiday break , I don't care . I'm like every day is a break for me , I'm loving it , I'm living it All right . So that's point one . Are we all good ?

Point one is that we have to find that balance and we have to take things and find things that are restorative to us and make us feel good in our journey . Okay , luna , okay , point number two so if you like this video right now , you guys , let's reset this . I'm Dr Andrew Pineset .

This is balancing social life in classes in college and finding a perfect balance . Right , we've talked about the importance of not just delaying all gratification , but finding the gratification , finding the joy in each and every single day . Now for the second part , guys , how do we do that ?

So we're saying , listen , we're going to make time for joy every single day . Well , to do that , we have to make time for you . We have to make time for yourself , time for what matters to you and your schedule , and so we must set the boundaries . We must set healthy , functional , personalized boundaries and get clear on our own personal priorities .

I had a student Was going to Berkeley and this student felt like they weren't enjoying Berkeley . Oh , how you loving Berkeley ? I love Berkeley . They got Cetaholic up there with the cinnamon rolls . It's like a great , like hippie culture . There's always a bunch of weirdos out , like it's just , it's great , always something to see .

And they're like well , I haven't really had to see much of the campus . It's been so busy . Like , what are you so busy doing ? And they're like oh , you know , oh you know , my mom is like having a tough time .

You know , I went to community college and so I was living at home and now I've transferred to berkeley and so she's having a tough time , she's all by herself and so I'm constantly driving and I'm like why are you doing that ? You're not enjoying that . No , I'm not enjoying it .

But my mom , it's important to my mom and I can't tell you how many of you guys have been there where you're doing stuff . It's like , man , I get it . Your mom wants you home , obviously , but if it's not serving you , if it's not healthy for you , you got to put up a boundary and you got to prioritize you and what makes you feel good ?

If you're working hard , right , as a pre-med , as a college student , you need that weekend for you and your fun time . So it's very critical .

It's very crucial that you guys learn to say no sometimes , and it's okay , and people might get their feelings hurt , but their hurt feelings are not your fault , because you're preserving your feelings and sometimes that's collateral damage , but you're not hurting them . They just feel hurt . There's a difference .

So it's about making sure you have the fun in your life and the relaxation in your life to thrive in your academics and build your career . So how do we do this ? How do we set these boundaries ? Well , the first thing is learn to say no y'all .

And when it comes to saying no and focusing on your studies , it's not about being antisocial , it's about managing your time effectively , and so I'm a person I don't like a lot of people around me , so for me , this is really easy , but for some of you guys maybe you love to be around people , but it's about finding the right people to be around in the right

environment , and so I did a video on this a while back . I'll link in the description below . But I talked about Joko . Who knows what Joko ? Is Joko right ? Learning to say no and the power of no is going to switch you from FOMO to Joko . What are my Joko people at . What does Joko mean ? Right ?

Yes , there we go Perfect Joy of consciously opting out . Many students maybe you experience FOMO oh my gosh , I'm going to miss out , I'm going to miss out . I'm going to miss out . What if I miss out ? It's a fear of missing out . Instead , I want you guys to develop the joy of consciously opting out .

I'm choosing to opt out of that because I'm choosing to opt into something better for me . Does that make sense ? We're not passively sitting back and subconsciously being led to do certain things . We're consciously and critically thinking about every single second we spend . Is this the most fun I can have ? Is this what I want to do first and foremost ?

Most fun I can have ? Is this what I want to do first and foremost ? Joko , joko , y'all the joy of consciously opting out . So check out that whole video .

I won't belabor the point , but I have a super great video all about Joko and how to cultivate that when it comes to saying no and really maximizing that Joko , to be able to do that and not have this fear of missing out .

The next step and actually I guess the baseline step to doing that saying no is that we have to get clear on our priorities and we have to prioritize what matters to us . It's the key to being a Joko person .

The joy of constantly helping out is that you have to get clear on who you are , what you like to do , what hobbies you want , what activities you want to be involved in , and not letting everything else and let other people plan your life for you .

That way , you know , no , this is what matters to me , this is what's going to be the most fun to me , and you don't have to worry about what's happening over there , because I know what I want to do right now is be at this party in Santa Barbara , living my life . I'm not worried about that . Or you know what ?

I'm having a great time right now walking the beach . I'm not worried about that party because I'm walking the beach . So you get to choose what you need and what matters to you in that moment .

So we prioritize what matters to us Through that prioritization and this is not just , we're not talking about priorities of your work , I'm talking about priorities of your personal life . Right , right , right you got a bunch of friends . Which friends are the top of the call list ?

Who is a for sure , surefire , great time Someone you just vibe with , you get along with . That person needs to be on the schedule way more than the guy who's like sometimes he's cool , other times he's like I don't know right . Pick the right people , prioritize your personal lives .

Then , once you do this , like I said , scheduled , structured fun time In big , bold , crazy , colorful letters on your schedule should be your fun time , should be the time reserved for you to enjoy yourself . Why ? Because then , when we look at our schedule , we're not overwhelmed by the work we have to do .

We're overjoyed with all the opportunity for fun and excitement and love and laughter that we have cultivated and that is available and is already scheduled on my calendar . Like , yes , I'm hanging out with Joe this weekend for fun and excitement and love and laughter that we have cultivated and that is available and is already scheduled on my calendar .

Like , yes , I'm hanging out with Joe this weekend , freaking Joe's awesome man , he has the funniest jokes . We can get hype about hanging out with Joe , the Joke man . We can get hype hanging out with I don't know freaking super supportive Sally , I don't know right .

You can get hype about what's on your calendar and it can motivate you and it can drive you Say I'm going to put this work in because I want to have uninterrupted Joe time , I want to have uninterrupted Sally time . It'll motivate you by putting on the schedules . We make sure that we put . We don't just say , oh not , we don't just have only studying .

We make sure we put in that fun time and we make sure not only is it fun time , we know what we're doing in that fun time so we can visualize it , we can make it more real . And this is the key , right , because we're trying to do this delayed gratification thing , but we're trying to build the joy in . We can live that future joy .

Let's take a step sidetrack . Anticipation is amazing . It can literally change the physiology of your body , anticipating something . For many of us as students , we live in a state of anticipatory anxiety where we are constantly anticipating some badness happening and , as a result , we live with all this anxiety .

What I want you guys to do is flip the script and live with anticipatory excitement , anticipatory joy that you look at your calendar , you look at your life and you say , man , what's the next cool thing I got coming up , what's the next exciting thing I have coming up ? And we live that one moment of excitement , that one vacation .

We live it for a month before the vacation . We're living it . Oh yeah , man , it's going to be so sweet . I'm going to be on the beach . Oh yeah , it's going to be like . That's the way we're living our lives . We're anticipating the positive things we have in our lives , so we put that on our schedule .

That way we can do that and we can facilitate making it real for ourselves and we can visualize that pot of gold at the end of our hard work week , of a rainbow of a hard work . Okay , for you guys , right now , I want to take a second . All right , I mentioned how we're going to be active here . Right , this is live action . Is everybody here with me ?

Live action . If we live action , you better comment and respond to this right now . Quick exercise you guys , right now , write down one academic and one social priority you have for the next month . What's one big academic or professional thing you got going on right now ? What's one way you could be better socially , personally , that you could have more fun ?

And let's find a way . Let's say listen , how are we going to work to balance them and then share with us in the box . Thank you all for it . I appreciate your commenting right Comment about the meal on our own . Share with us how you're going to blend these two things . How are you going to maximize your fun so that you can maximize your success ?

How are you going to ? What are you going to swap out ? What are you going to get rid of ? What are you going to bring in ? What are you going to amplify up ? What are we going to be doing for our fun , as we talked about , maybe you have an exam coming up and you get the MCAT coming up . Oh , my gosh , get the MCAT . I can't enjoy life .

Well , wait a minute . How can we build some fun in to our MCAT study schedule For all my students ? You guys know , if you're my MCAT , if you're in my MCAT program right , you get my course right and you get my coaching . You guys know one of the big components of my MCAT program is that we build fun into the prep .

We want our MCAT prep to be a fun time , because without the time with our family , without the time with our friends , without the time to enjoy ourselves , how the heck are we going to be high level ? How are we not going to be worn down by the time he's an MCAT . We've got to build in that fun time .

So , for your MCAT even , how are you going to build in some fun , some breaks , some rejuvenation into your MCAT program ? Because I spilled on my face Don't worry about that water splashing out of there . We live action y'all . Okay , put it in the box right now . Dejount starts taking notes on Costanzo physiology .

Dejount can say that because he's starting med school in a couple months here . Very excited for him . Congratulations , dejount , starting medical school . So he's going to be doing Costanzo physiology , getting up on his physiology , so he's ready to start medical school . We'll go All right , let's pivot . Key point number three Are you guys all still with me ?

We having some fun , we having fun here ? Is this your scheduled fun time for today , hanging out with me ? You have to excuse my voice . Like I said , I've been partying all weekend , partying hard with the kids in Miami . We had a great time . Point number three is that , first , we're not going to delay all the gratification . That's number one .

Number two we are going to have scheduled , structured fun time and maximize our fun , okay , and we're going to put ourselves first , getting clear on our priorities , setting healthy boundaries . But the third part . Right , and again , at every level we're getting deeper and deeper and more advanced .

The third part is is you start looking for ways to build fun and to build joy into your work ? Ways to build fun and to build joy into your work ? We're going to work on integrating our passions , the things that give us meaning , that bring us joy , into our extracurricular activities .

If you are one of my students , if you're my Dominate Pre-Med Accelerator , you know I'm all about pre-medding with passion . So I work with my students and say , hey , listen , what are you passionate about ? What do you care about ?

Now let's find a way to either find that opportunity or create that opportunity for you to live out your passion as a quote unquote work . Right , we've got to find ways to integrate our passions into our extracurriculars .

So as you go through your college process , you go through your pre-med process , we're going to be establishing hobbies and passions and then looking for opportunities to integrate them into our extracurricular activities , into our daily lives , into our quote unquote work , to make our work fun . It's very possible , guys . I had a student who was really into yo-yo .

I'm like listen're really into yo-yo . He said , yeah , but it's like a hobby , it's just yo-yoing . I'm like , no , screw that , we're going to magnify that . And so what we did was we created the opportunity . So I said , hey , listen , go back to your high school , to your elementary school , to your middle school . I said you're a big , successful college student .

Now , while you're teaching yo-yo to them , also add in some science lessons on top of it . So now you're teaching them about the physics of the yo-yo and all these kinds of things about the yo-yo , but at the same time , you're just yo-yoing . And so now you're creating this opportunity to stand out .

And it was amazing because he built this program , was doing this , going talking to students , and it was this awesome thing . That was just fun . For him to go yo-yo talk about physics oh my gosh , it's amazing . But he was impacting students .

He got a letter of recommendation from one of these program heads , right , one of the people he's working with at one of his schools and that became something that everybody , every single interviewer , wanted to talk to him about . A freaking yo-yo Like how did you turn yo-yoing into a scholarly activity ? Well , that's weird .

Like it was the key highlight of his application and of he got into medical school . So even something obscure like yo-yoing , can be integrated into something that is applicable for your career . For me , I love teaching and mentoring Obviously , because I'm hanging out with you knuckleheads right now right , teaching and mentoring those were my passions .

So what did I do ? I started getting involved with tutoring programs on my campus for other disadvantaged students . I started getting involved . I was working for Kaplan for a minute as a tutor for Kaplan , doing that Right , and then I was like , wait a minute , I want to do my own thing . So I was like I want even more of this .

I started my own tutoring company and I started mentoring students and having that longevity , that longitudinal process of working with students and I know what it is . It's more than just learning how to study . You need support .

You need someone who can be there with you to cheer you on , to give you the beat down these words of harshness when you need it to get back on track . You need more full circle support .

So I started becoming this mentor for students and it was just an awesome thing , because then it snowballed and that became all I did was I taught , I mentored , and it became this big , colossal thing that not only did it get me into medical school , at Stanford .

But then once I got to Stanford , they saw this , they identified this and actually I'll never forget it Dr Charles Prober , he's the Dean at Stanford . He came to me , he's the Dean of Education . He came to me Second look weekend If you guys don't know . You apply to medical school . You apply to medical school . They give you an interview .

Once you get the interview , you go to interview and if they , if they accept you , they invite you back in the spring to come see their medical school so you can get a closer look for this all the accepted students , to see if this is really the place for you . And when I went to that second look , dr Prober knew me , knew my name .

He's like hey , andre , josh , I loved your application , we loved your interview . What we're really interested in is this education , this mentor stuff you're doing . We're actually in the process of switching our curriculum to more of a flipped classroom and we'd love your expertise in curriculum development to help us with this .

We'd love to have you part of our curriculum committee . But I was like , oh my gosh , this guy knows my name , he knows my activities and not just what I did and performed in the classroom , classroom he wants to talk about my teaching and mentoring . He sees value in that . So then guess what happened In medical school .

I didn't have to do the regular medical school stuff . I got to be on the curriculum committee . I got to work to build curriculum . I got to work and do more teaching . I got to go and do speaking and do mentor and do outreach and work with disadvantaged programs .

So I got to go not just from pre-med enjoying myself and living my passion , but then also med school . My work wasn't really work , it was my joy and I got to live it . And then , in residency , same thing . I had to go out , work with you guys , right . I started my website , premedproductivitycom and brought you guys to me .

There's even more students out here who can't be in California . They need me . And so I became this virtual mentor for people . We get on Zoom and do all kinds of things through my programs . But through my whole career I was building my passion .

And now you look right 20 years of experience teaching , tutoring , mentoring , coaching , right , getting students in alignment . And now I'm able to do that for you guys every Monday and Wednesday , right . Doing for my coaching students every Wednesday . Doing for my core students Anytime they want access to on-demand lectures .

I've built this life , this passion , into my life . So when people say , hey , what do you do , I say , listen , I'm a part-time anesthesiologist , full-time pre-med protein expert . Part-time anesthesiologist , full-time student coach . Part-time anesthesiologist , full-time pre-med expert . That is how I say it to everybody .

Because I'm full time , I've crafted my life and my curriculars and my work . I've created the passion in that . Does that make sense ? So it doesn't just stop back then . It goes all the way through your journey . You start now doing this . You're going to build joy to your whole journey , for your whole life .

So I want you guys to , I want to challenge you to think about how can you , what is your passion , what is your hobby and how can you ? What is your passion , what is your hobby and how can you formalize and incorporate into your college activities to build out your resume in doing something you enjoy . Yes , yes , all right , let's see .

I have a question from Isaiah real quick . I'm an incoming first-year dental student . Orientation starts August 1st . Should I spend this time pre-studying gross anatomy this will be my first class or should I enjoy my summer ? You should pre-prepare for dental school Congratulations , I'm getting in first of all .

But pre-prepare for dental school , but do so , again , in a balanced way . Spend a couple hours every day learning some stuff towards your degree . Not anatomy why ? Because anatomy is not functional . That's something that's more memorization based . But instead take the time to learn some of the science of the mouth .

Take some time to learn some of the science You're going to learn some of your science classes , so that way , that's one less thing you have to pick up as you go forward . All right , so that was a little question on the tail end there , but that's what we have for today , guys . I hope this was beneficial to you . Guys , we're at 38 minutes .

I hope this is fruitful to you . You guys understand that it's a complex , multi-tiered way that we create this balance and it's not just simply , oh , just be more balanced . No , we have to think about it critically and specifically . We have to evaluate things and we have to make sure we have the right frame of mind for it .

Not too much play gratification some , but not too much . We have to make sure that we are clear on who we are and what we want , and we put that first and foremost with our priorities , and then , third and finally , we want to say listen , the fun doesn't just have to be fun time . We want to blur that line and bring the fun into our work .

That's a life . That's a life . So I thank you guys so much for being here with me and sharing this time with me . If you've enjoyed this video , please take a second and like this video .
