Practice Makes Perfect

So let's talk a minute about this phrase, practice makes perfect. Music. Hey everybody, Pre-Accident Investigation Podcast Safety Moment. I'm Todd. How are you? I hope you're good. Practice makes perfect. You've heard it. You probably said it a million times. You've definitely heard it a million times. It's something we say all the time. And what's interesting about that is I'm a big fan.

Simulation is an incredible, incredible tool because you can simulate and actually ensure higher potential for success. Practice makes perfect. But let's not fool ourselves. We don't practice to be perfect. We practice because the world is filled with imperfection. So you don't really practice to be perfect.

You practice because the world is imperfect. And if you practice a world of imperfection, then what you're doing is building capacity to do whatever high risk, high consequence, very important, super sexy, ultimately interesting thing you're doing or simulating or practicing. You're practicing it so you can do it when things vary. That's a really important idea. And, you know, I think it's always been true. You'll have to jump in and agree or disagree with me, and you'll do both for sure.

But I'm pretty sure this idea of practice makes perfect is because the world is filled with imperfections. The problem is, is I think what we hear is do it perfectly. Well, you're going to do it the way you have to do it because the world you're living in is the world you're living in.

Embracing Imperfection in Practice

What we want to do is build a system that has the potential to realize that the system may in fact fail that something may happen that there may be some variability there may be some variation and because we practice and practice and practice when those variations come we're ready that's the key that's everything and that's your safety moment what do you think short and sweet but but that's an important one. Practice because the world is filled with imperfection.

Closing Thoughts on Safety and Kindness

Learn something new every single day. Have as much fun as you possibly can. Be good to each other. Be kind to each other. And for goodness sakes, you guys, be safe. Music.
