This is Practical Psychology for Business with Benjamin Halpern! Hi a great morning and welcome to today's podcast! So, we have resolutions. We have commitments. We have goals. We have dreams. We have aspirations. We have them clear, we visualize them, we put dates on them, you know it's there. It's setup. It's fine, and when it comes time for rubber to hit the road, we get into our offers and we want to do it. It feels like - we're back! You know, we make our New Year's resolutions and it seems like we're back to last year. All those old patterns. Those distractions. Those challenges hit us back in the face and we think uh oh we're back to last year but it's not the truth. What these are is old patterns. You see, things in life, good after bad, become patterns. People that run into good happy patterns, people that run into action patterns, people that run into positive patterns wind up...they're there for them at all times. People that run into negative patterns and we all have a lot of both but when we have a negative pattern associated with our work, it's just that was our performance for last year, before our new goals resolutions and commitments! And you know playing at that level had certain patterns in place as to why we played at that level. Certain distraction patterns. Certain avoidance patterns that we had in place which kept us at our last year's success but if we want to move ahead we have to realize the first step is, of course, commitment and visualization and being you know committed a hundred percent in our hearts to make happen but just because we have that doesn't wipe out wipe out the old patterns. The old patterns are here because they were there, but we will wipe them out. We won't feed them anymore. We won't use them anymore and they're gonna die of starvation and I'm happy to walk you through in the future podcasts how to be able to do that in a quicker way but for now you need to roll up your sleeves and live as if they are not there. You gotta mow pass them. It's not gonna be there every single day that you're gonna have to fight them. They're gonna go away. They're gonna die of starvation. That's how patterns work. The more we use them, the more strong, powerful they become. The more they affect us the more they exist in our lives. The less we use them you know it's the old adage - if you don't use it, you lose it! If we don't use a limb within a couple of months we're gonna be in therapy to learn how to use it again. If you don't use it you lose it. It's the same thing with patterns. So we stop using patterns, we're gonna lose it. We have new goals, we have new dreams, we have new plans and we follow through so automatically we get into action - serious action - doing things, following through... then the pattern that we will stop to use will die out but I urge you to have a new pattern of action! In other words, a pattern of how many calls you're gonna make today or how many touches you're gonna make today in sales. Have really a plan in front of you that's strong enough and compelling enough that could rip through and push you ahead through all the distractions at least for today. You got to do it for four or five days and boom! If you don't use it you lose it - they're gonna die but it takes a little bit energy and a little bit commitment and a little bit power... That's the idea of making resolutions. Visualizing it. Seeing it. Tasting it. Feeling it. That willpower that you're on that motivation - you don't got to do for the rest of the year that motivation you need to get through the initial phase to stop using those patterns. Stop distracting yourself during work. Stop going to avoidance pattern. Stop giving yourself reasons why not to take action of follow-through. Stop talking to people, going to get coffees and snacks and meals and reorganizing your desk and listening to motivational content. Don't do those avoidance behaviors, at least for the first week of the year so you don't have to look at this as a goal for a million years but you got to look at it the first week of the year. You need to not get derailed by old patterns. Yes they're there. They're not there to stay. They're not hardwired however they were fed so they have some power and they're in your life. They don't just go away by themselves because you made a resolution but they will go away when you stop feeding them. If you don't use them, you lose them. Stop using those patterns and you're going to lose those patterns and once you lose those patterns it will be that much easier for you to forge ahead to follow through do the actions, do the new patterns, the new behaviors that you want to install for the future year. They will be there for you. They will be the new patterns. They will serve you for the rest of the year, for the rest of your life! Install good patterns! They will go. That's the key of all successful people - great patterns running - and now YOU've joined the ranks!
