Ross's Debt and George's Schemes

A

Hello, hello and welcome back to Nampara, the recap podcast of BBC's period drama television series Television series. Pool Dark. My name is Jonna. And with me, as always, is Christina. Christina. Today we'll be discussing episode three of series two. Mm-hmm. Yes. Or what I like to call the episode where I start not liking Ross, but we will get into that later. Yes. It becomes the the the plot thickens in terms of the relationship's turn. Yeah.

There was a lot that happened during this episode, I thought. Francis had a change of heart. Frances had a change of heart. George is taking fighting. Lessons um, you know, l lots of things. And I found it interesting George's fighting lessons. Do you see where his little fighting stance? Yeah, at first when I was watching it, I thought they were fencing lessons. I'm like, Oh cool, we're gonna watch some fencing. No, it was his fists sticking up in the air and Then he

very gallant to me. It wasn't. And and and it was interesting because I thought, did they really fight like that? But if you looked at old posters or old pictures of the Put'em up. Put em up. Yeah, they had that stance and I think they called like an Irish fighting stance or something like that. So

something that I've had. There's more other He just did not look very macho doing it. He didn't. It must have been the tights he was wearing or like the knee high socks. Probably I don't know. But it was not. His aura was an oozing masculinity. No. Whatever you just said, no. It's not He was not. No.

So he's still a little frightened of Ross that he could possibly get beat up or something like that. I don't blame him. He has put himself he like his attorney Tankard said, you have placed he pretty much exposed himself who the person was that was trying to get Um Ross Yep. Hung basically, right? Yeah. Because it wasn't gonna look good for us. Ross know George had something to do with it, so he should be. I would be. I would be if I were George. Yeah. All right. And you know

other people that were keenly aware of their position with Ross was Judd. It goes we see Judd's back at the house as a servant and he's totally kissing up to Ross. And Ross, what does he say to him? Oh he was like I'm thinking of th what are you thinking, sir? I'm thinking of thrashing you from here to stall. I sir. Yes. I yeah, sure, whatever. Drash me just like Go ahead, do what you need to do. And then he walks when he demels it comes in and Ross says

Jud's groveling is killing me. Like he just like just let it go already. Stop kissing up to me. Yeah, and he knows he's done you know, it was it wasn't like it was just some like something like, Oh, you know, it's just some No, this was like he had a huge part into almost made him get hung, so Right. Yeah. I'm surprised he has him there and he's allowed to come back, but he did. And the letter that uh uh Judd was bringing to Ross was the letter that Pasco had

The loan that was due. Yes. So Ross's finances are not doing it. Going down the toilet, he owes a four four hundred pounds. Pounds. Um, probably a lot more than we're thinking. But they've got to come with uh up with that like within a couple days, basically. Demelza doesn't know. Not yet. No. So that's not good. So he's just trying to. Like work through it at the mine. Yep. His head. Having a meeting with all the shareholders and figuring stuff out.

And you can see Demels was trying to like see where his head is at because she comes in to see how he's doing and try to talk to him but then he's like, I gotta go to a meeting, you know? And he's like she's like, uh never really talking. I don't know what's going on with you. And who's crashing at the t at the quarterly meeting?

Ugh, that tankered guy, the creepy guy. And we know that's not gonna be good. And Ross is on to him. You see the look he gives, I'm like, what's this guy up to? Yep, he's weird. We know he's up to no good. Yes, he's there on behalf of George, of course, we all know that. Well, and he doesn't side with everybody to go ahead with their plan for like I don't know, it's like a new mind they wanna do, or they're just trying to

Invest their mu their profits into like digging in a certain spot or something like that. But he doesn't vote with everyone. So he's more like a mole in there like

Francis's New Lease and McNeil's Flirtation

Yeah. And so that cuts to Francis and um Elizabeth looking at the first time. And Francis seems in much happier spirits. He's playing with the sun. He seems all happy and nice. And I liked that it shows, yeah, Elizabeth is going to say no to the invitation and she's like, Please ag you know, accept our regrets that we can't come. Yeah. And then France is like

No, actually please send our delight that we cannot make it. Kind of the English. Please send our yeah. Our delight in not coming to your party. Not be like, take your stupid invitation. Right. So but even Elizabeth is like, What is up with Francis? and and also Aunt Agatha is like noticing the change. Like, why is he being so happy and But he probably recognized, okay, he almost lost his life. He's going to enjoy the life he has.

And appreciate what he has. Which I would think it's an interesting turnaround, right? Okay, you come you come back from that, like I'm just about to kill myself. Right. Like you can either come back and still down in the dumps or you can be a completely changed an interesting change of attitude I think for someone who was about to commit suicide.'Cause he probably really thought it was gonna happen. It's just that the gun didn't go off right. So he did try it, it just didn't work.

So then he probably realized like maybe I should be grateful for the things that I have and change my attitude. I wonder if he at some point thought maybe divine intervention. Change maybe. Good change though, that's what Elizabeth said to Agatha. We well he's good and he's doing good, so we mustn't question it. Yes, that's right. Like a proper lady. You sound just like her. Yes. Like a proper lady we must always say the right thing at the right time.

That is not me. That is not me. Oh, and so I will not have my feelings misunderstood. Precisely. Haven't used that expression then. No, I thought that was a perfect opportunity. So cutting to Demelza's on the beach cause she's You know, feeling a bit frustrated, so she's going on the beach, she's collecting firewood, and she looks up and there's some creeper stalker staring at her. Captain McNeil Captain McNeil at her service. Yes. Yes.

So I come to visit the maybe you could pour me some rum while I'm here, like basically just inviting himself over to come hang out with her'cause she says Ross isn't there. Yeah, but I'm here to see my comrade or has got my comrade. Uh-huh. So So you can help me with my friend's cow. On account of your skill doctor and that's why I'm hearing And I was watching it going, Since when does Timolza know stuff about cows? I don't know, maybe she's a cow expert.

Oh she's a farm she's she's worked on the farm. So I should I should have known that. I I didn't it was a very odd thing to ask, but I understand what was happening there. Yes. And I know what Mila was gonna ask, like do you think McNeil was like Hmm. Really and you know like I think he fancied her. Yeah. I think he already met her before. So Yeah, I would I would say that Neil really really liked her and

He made it a point to stop there soon. He's kinda creepy. He has like this weird like stare. I don't know. It just creeps me out. Like he looks into your soul. Yeah, I don't like it. And so then that's when uh you know, she's still uh drinking some port or whatever they're drinking in Prudy doesn't Prudy ask you, is Ross gonna be home soon? Yeah, you can tell she's irritated. She kinda gives him the eye.

And then Ross does appear and he's not too happy that here his wife is sitting hanging out with his captain and And she's comporting herself very well. She doesn't feel like she's being inappropriate. No. The maid's there, so she's witnessing it all. He's kinda just having some attitude and he doesn't stay to talk to this guy who's supposed to be he's supposed to wanna be the one who knows her, right?

It's his yeah, his comrade. And then he's like, Well, you two seem to be conducting affairs just fine amongst yourselves and he just leaves her. He does. And then you can see the squinty eye look that Demon's like. And then she smiles at Captain McNeil though, because she squins at Ross and then Captain McFin's all smiles. Yeah. Which that was annoying by Ross too,'cause it's like hello. Mm-hmm. And then she does call him out on that, right? She does.

Caroline's Quest and Poldark's Fall

As she should. As she should. And then we kind of jumped to Caroline with Unwin and they're like driving with the carriage member and she's he's she's kind of mentioning Um like those beastly little hovels or something like the little house with All the size are loathsome, you know. Right. Yeah, and what is she doing in Cornwall anyway?

Her uncle, remember? So he does he live over there? Ray Pen Vennon lives there. Okay,'cause that was the part where I kind of didn't know why she was there. So thank you. So and then Unwin was there for the i sizes, so she was there for that too, right? Yes. But she's with him in the carriage'cause uh later on her uncle was like, You can't go to town by yourself, it's not appropriate.

Right. But this is where Unwin is accompanying her and then do you remember she's like driving by? She sees Dwai. I didn't say all the sights were loathsome. I do like that her hat is angled in such a way that when she says that Unwin and Unwin is probably just like so oblivious'cause he's so like'cause she's had got her eye on twice and she's saying it. Right. And she kinda just keeps spotting him in places. Making it a point. Yes. To be like Fancy meeting you here.

Right. And so the next time she sees them is in Churro and also Ross and Demelza are there because Ross has finally told Demelza that they're in major debt and owe four hundred pounds like the next day. So they have to gather everything they can to sell. So they gotta go to town and sell all their stuff, basically.

It was'cause you can see the part like the part scene where he's having to sell her brooch. Mm-hmm. And that was a gift. Right. And he didn't want to. No. But he kinda has to. She was like, That's at least worth a hundred. So you kinda see them riding into town and people are looking at them'cause it was probably kind of obvious if you got this wagon full of stuff and you're out there trying to sell it, that you're probably on hard times and

You gotta sell everything now. And it has already been known literally across town because remember at that quarterly meeting they were walking back after it and he was with his buddies or his partners from that meeting. Right. And they were telling him that, you know, people So everybody knows that their finances Which is kinda like

That's kinda odd that the whole town knows I'm broke. Yeah. What I like though is so when Caroline sees Dwight and they're talking and she's like, Oh, that they must find it so humiliating and Dwight is just like, I doubt that they see it that way.

And then it's like basically, Good day to you and he walks off. He just completely blows her off, right?'Cause she's kind of been I mean, she's been a little stuck up. She doesn't realise how she's coming across, but I think she doesn't realize she's got her work cut out for her if she's gonna go for Dwight like He's a good guy. And I would think that's one of the like, I'm sure there's many moments in her interactions with Dwight where like what he what he says kinda like

It just makes her like him even more. I'd like to. Even though he's basically putting her down or kind of disagreeing. Kind of he is. She's like, Oh, I like that. Yeah. It's not just some other rich guy that's trying to get her money and just you know, at her feet for everything and she likes that a guy has his own mind. Right. And he's gonna speak what he wants. And that that that after the broach part

Right, we see Demelza leave'cause I think she's probably upset. I mean, you know, you've got a really beautiful necklace that you got someone gave me how to sell it. And then she walks out, who's there? George. Mm-hmm. Yeah, and he's just like He wants to see this. He wants to be front and center of the you know, Russell's demise in any way, financial demise. Right. You know, even his physical demise, right? Well that that's that's pretty

It's pretty deep. Like that's low. You almost just got the guy killed. Really have to go and see him sell all his belongings too. Why yes he does. But then that's when he Ross approaches him. Kinda gives him a little scare, which I like. 'Cause he was like, Oh, are you disappointed George or something? and he's like

Not that I'm aware of. You're like, well perhaps you will be. Yeah. And then you can kinda see the fear in George, like uh Like he's gonna do that. Yes, he's getting his dance spicy lessons ready. But yeah. And then Demelsa grabs Ross, come on, Robbie. Come on, let's go.

Ross's Disappointing Conduct and Judd's Return

Yeah, let's go. Let's not do this at all. Can't blame them. And so we talked a little bit about this being the episode that you were like Uh you start to begin to not like Ross. Yeah. And it all s starts with and then Elizabeth kinda. Elizabeth, you can tell she's trying to get them over there and I know she says it's for Francis, but I think it's for her too.

She wants to spend time with Ross because even when she She finds she comes across Elizabeth at one point not Elizabeth, I mean Zamelda and they're walking, right? And she asked him if everything's okay and she's like, How is Ross doing? How's Ross this? And then she asked White at one point'cause he comes over there and she's like, Oh, maybe you can extend the invitation and get Ross and Demelza over here and to our harvest party She's really trying. She is trying.

Cheers. And I know we're gonna come to that harvest party and I will save my comments for that harvest party'cause that is where I begin to not like Ross. Right. But yeah, and during Dwight's visit, Elizabeth does kind of confirm her assumptions that George probably tried to kill himself.

Or Francis. I don't know why I always get George and Frances. Am I the only ones? Because they're always together. There we go. They're all together. And they kind of have like the same kind of curly hair. And they're blonde. Yes, thank you. Okay. Very similar. So it's even a little bit more. It's just that Francis tried to take his life.

Yeah, and I I think she's happy, don't you think? Because I I mean if you look at it, she he comes home, he's what is he doing? Working. Mm-hmm. Yeah, before he didn't want to work at all and now he's Doing the farming thing and being a loving father. Mm-hmm. Being attentive. Yeah. And he's kind. Yep. Exactly. So again, why does she need to keep trying to get Ross over there? Her husband's finally becoming decent and she's Not for the

We don't know that. She she still longs for him. And I think she's just always thinking about Ross right now, though both of them can't I don't think It's gonna it's gonna take a long time, which is what we we'll establish in these next few episodes to come, how it's gonna take them a while to um to to work through it and to kind of So in the meantime, before that harvest party starts, Judd is followed in the woods and beat up and killed. Uh-huh. Or so we think.

He's found and he probably, like you said, was probably beat up to the point where he was in a coma or something, because they find him and they all think he's dead. They wrap em up, the cried the They crying over him. Right. And then she's she She says mean things about a misery misery mong misery mongrel or something like that. How dare he? I know, right? How dare he? So so yeah, that was being that was going on.

Harvest Celebrations and Social Tensions

And then Ross agrees to go to the harbour. I do. So the harvest party opens up with a sizing scene. Yes. Were we talking about that scything scene? Only it's not the quite the same of a scything scene as it is with Ross. No, it was quite rather boring. Yeah, with Francis with the shirt on, which is okay. Okay with that. Yeah. What if it was doctor Annis?

No, I still think it wouldn't been the same. I'm thinking Doctor Anne. I feel like in future episodes there maybe is An episode with Doctor Anna's doing something without a Cutting wood? I don't even remember. Something I feel like we'll we'll come up to that eventually see if I'm right or wrong or if I'm just imagining If your biceps are nicely chiseled, then you have every right to take your shirt off.

And perform very heavy functions of cutting wood and side things. Do you think that Frances' biceps were not shown because they were not chiseled? I could not comment on that, but it looks from the way his clothes laid on his body. Comes from a fitness instructor. I don't know. She can tell. Uh then that would be like silly'cause the clothing back then I'm sure you Someone else? Ross said he had a shirt off because he was fine. I mean not like

hot like look hot but like temperature hot he wouldn't have been hot. Yeah you have to be careful how you say that. Yeah I'm hot temperature hot So maybe it was a different it was a harvest, so it would have been a fall, so maybe it wouldn't have been as warm and hot. True. So Francis did not feel the need to take a shirt off. Good observation. There's a reason for it. Yep. So then they're continuing the harvest party and Francis proceeds to do the

thing with a barrel of like wheat on his head. Right. How does it go again? And they put it on their hat. Like it looks like a head, right? Yeah, it looks like a headdress. And so the song starts A hobby, a hobby. A neck, a neck. No, you're like, what have you? What happy? What have you? A neck, a neck.

Clearly need to work on that. And it was just it was cute though. I thought it was a cute little harvest. Yes. They all looked like they were enjoying themselves. Yes. It was cute. I wouldn't that one yeah. Makes it fun. And didn't you like their party involved like their workers? Yeah. The mother, remember the snobby mom, Elizabeth's mom was like, uh

Can't believe who are these people? Yeah. Well only the people that are helping making your life possible, basically. Yeah. She is an interesting lady. I don't like her. She'll be in a few episodes later on and One episode. That's really hot. So yeah, they have the party and this is where I start to not like rock. So the evening settles and Demelza has to leave because that's when um Oh yeah. Right, her mother uh Elizabeth's mom

insults her basically. Yeah, but then she's outside and Prudy comes because guess what has happened? Judd's dead body has disappeared off the table and That's freaky rap. I'm sure that would be scary. So then she has to rush back home and they're all there. Mm-hmm. And then Judd comes in. Yeah. And then he's all irritated because we're basically having a party about him dying and Pruddy's got her best clothes on and he's all he takes like a jug of wine and like the whole chicken and

She's like, take right, take it take proper. And so yeah, so she goes and addresses that situation. She comes back.

Ross's Betrayal and Demelza's News

And Elizabeth and Ross end up in a room together. Right, because by that time France is, you know, everyone's left. Right. Um Ross stayed there. Well no, they were staying the night. Well, they were staying the night, yeah. And Elizabeth comes to clean up, but isn't that that's what Chris is like in some way. So that's the servant's job, isn't it? I got to do it. So I was supposed like kinda wondering how did Elizabeth end up

I think she knew he was in there. Like, Oh, you're in here possibly. Yeah. And then they just start being flirting with each other. It's horrible. It wasn't. And what does Ross tell her? Like she basically says, Oh, we wouldn't have made a good match and Ross says, Oh yeah, it's you can never be a scullery maid. Right. And all the meanwhile Demelza is out there hearing all of this. Yeah. And then she runs off. Quite uncomfortable because

It's you know, it's one of those moments where it's like do you stick around to hear what he's saying? You know, do you stick around to hear what she's what he says? Probably we'll stick around just to hear the whole thing. Right? It's just kinda like what is it? Make sure nothing else happens. Oh goodness. And then

about that part that was interesting was that Ross attributes to Elizabeth this um like the way Francis has changed. Like this like you know, you brought h you know, how could it not be so obvious you brought this light back into him? So he Yeah, singing her praises. And so that he think he went a little bit overboard because I think he was like reminiscing. He was being stupid. He was because he was like Oh when I saw you in the field you look like a girl of sixteen like when I first met you.

Again. Remember that part? Again, why I start not liking him in this episode. Going into that. Yes. And so then he goes back to the room and Tamil's there and she's irritated. She kinda makes the remark, like, Well, I've been gone taking care of business because Judd, you know, raised from the dead, basically. And then she's like, Oh, how did L or Elizabeth looked well tonight? And she He agreed. Mm-hmm. He didn't disagree. And what stupid thing does he say?

Uh I don't remember. Every man is allowed to look at a woman sometimes. Just like every woman is allowed to look at a man or something like that. He pulled that card. And she doesn't call him out. No, she does not. So she's more of a lady than we know. She could have been the scullery maid and just like Oh I heard you fool. Yeah, I heard you fool and then like Oh Monte Williams. Montel Williams. I don't know. Carrado. What was this? This what is the the Oh, what is that?

Jerry Springer! This could have been they could have all come on the show and she was like, No, you please didn't. Yeah. I was right here, fool. You said that. And then he goes and then she'll go after Elizabeth, who's the little Jerry Springer. She'd go after Elizabeth and smack her.

And then she'd be like, You must be a lady to both. They should have at least like had her envisioning that and then it wasn't really real. And then she goes back to like to Well They're just in the room talking. We envisioned it, so it already happened. The Jerry Springer already happened. So yeah. So that was the end that he like and it was kind of an awkward moment'cause she could have like like you said it cut she could have called him out but

Instead that's when m she kind of mentioned like, Oh, the last time we were here you told me you loved me. Things were different. Things were different. And she was about to have a baby. Uh huh. She told them she was gonna have a baby and then She tells him again She's gonna have another baby. Yes. She finally tells him. And he's he's kinda like uh I mean you can look the he has the look of panic in his face.'Cause obviously the

Right, right. And he's not quite probably ready to have another baby since they lost the other one. Probably takes a while before you're ready for that again. But it ends with what does she what does he say? Well, if she's willing to risk her heart, I am willing to risk mine. Yes. So they're risking their hearts. He's there. Um, waiting to do it. Sorry about the background noise. Someone forgot that there was going to be something happening tonight. So thirst. People get thirsty.

So yes, so we will see the next episode what's to come. Yes. It's going to be a little bit dramatic. It's gonna be very dramatic. As you can see that uh we'll focus on Caroline and Doctor Ennis. Yeah,'cause I just can't focus on other things. It makes me know I just want to skip the rest of the season, but I won't Skip it. Because it has to happen in order for other things to happen, right? I guess so. Be okay with that. We can do this. So next time we'll be going over season four of series two.

Mm-hmm. So just join us next time for that. And as always, our theme music was inspired by the original score for Pole Dark by Anne Dudley and was arranged for this podcast by Dan Gale.
