¶ Welcome, Corrections, and Francis's Crisis
Well hello and welcome back to Nampara, the recap podcast of BBC's period drama television series, Poldart. My name is Jonna and with me as always is Christina. Yay! And today we'll be discussing um episode two of series two. And today we have very special guests. Yay. We're excited. Yes, we're so excited. We're gonna have you just say your names. I am Cindy. Gary's Demelza.
And I am Gary, also known as Rob.
Dap fangers. Yes. We're excited to be here and it's fun to have gu guests and people that come on because I think it makes And then we can just kind of see what everyone picked up or they enjoyed. It's a lot of fun to hear what people enjoy or just kind of like making But um it's like the best part. Right. And I had to correct myself'cause in our last episode we were talking about that pamphlet and my notes were not very good and
I had said that in there they were referring to Demelza as this notorious dokie. It's Darcy, y'all. And it's just, you know, I think I mentioned it was she was like that was they're referring to her as a pop. Anyways, that had to be corrected becausey. Nonetheless, we're moving on. Here we go. And Well, we're starting off episode two. It's a continuation of the first season. And my first thing was, okay, is Francis still gonna be alive? Is it gonna be dead? And
Gun didn't go off as plans. I was worried for him. I really were nervous for him, yeah. He's he's having a rough time. He has. Hasn't he? Yeah. He doesn't know if Elizabeth loves him. He's jealous of Ross, does it feel like he's good enough? It's true. Everybody's a jealous of Ross. Jesus. George. But I think if you were a man at that time, I think maybe you would be. What do you think, Gary? Gary.
Why don't you take the fifth?
Your wife, you know, near Ross? Like, I don't know. He's pretty to look at. Just saying. The hair. Yes. The perfect baby hair. So much hair. It's amazing.
¶ Demelza's Intervention and Trial Anxiety
So yeah, so they're there and Demels is trying to help Ross. Mm-hmm. He's trying to like talk to w Caroline's uncle. Always forget his name. And Vinon. Right. Something like that yes, I think that's it. And then she spots the judge in the distance and was like, Maybe I could talk to him. Persuade him. And she's doing okay, you think, oh maybe she's got this but then here comes George.
And sneaks right in and blows her cover'cause he knows what she's up to. I like how she found out which judge it was by asking him all those funny is he handsome? Yeah. Yeah. Is he short? Yeah.
Does he like to drink?
Exactly. She was skillful. She was. You know, for being a miner's daughter, she has some people skills and some interrogation skills that I admire. She can turn on the charm when she wants to. She definitely can, that's for sure. And we have that part where Ross's attorney is talking to him, so that kind of starts also as well in the beginning. Um and I feel like y you look at the attorney and he's really worried for him because it doesn't look good for Ross and Ross
You know, it's like I I'll be fine. He's not really worried at all. I mean a little bit, but not to the extent of like someone who has all these charges.
I kinda got the feeling that the attorney was more worried about losing his set of stake knives if he lost this deal.
Possibly. Yeah. I think he got worried though when he found out Judd was gonna But Chuck wasn't really relying on Chuck cracks me out'cause he's lost. Maybe I did, maybe I did. I feel like he really started getting worried too when that other so there was another guy that ends up getting arrested.
and then he hears about his verdict and how he is guilty and is gonna be hung basically and I think that's when Ross was kinda like, Oh, it's getting real, like this could possibly be me next. So I think it kinda hit him at that point. So yeah, what was going on with that guy? He threw some poo at someone and then uh And Unwin know, it was Caroline's um but it's funny because Caroline doesn't really claim him. And Unwin already feels like he's got you know, he's got her, kinda, don't you think?
And uh I love it when he's there at that and he's like, Oh the people are clamoring
Oh, should I go out now?
Yeah Would you like to come with me? And she's like Hmm I guess. She got a good laugh. Yeah she did. But yeah, I mean You throw some poop at someone and the next thing you know you're being hung. That's serious. And it made you think like I'm sad. We we're pro we're f I mean, didn't you kinda think like, Okay, is he Ross gonna be like tried?
Yeah.
The show has to go. It still makes you nervous though. Even you know you know. Okay, obviously he's not gonna die, but you're still just tensed up. Is it gonna happen?
But you forget about that in that moment.
Yes, exactly.
It could be the uh
Do you guys like um Elizabeth uh trend with Elizabeth upset at Agatha because she's like card playing?
And the Agatha's all in and said, I'm just playing cards here. All this bad stuff happens and I say it happens, but I'm just playing cards.
Yeah. Yeah. And no doubt. Elizabeth's anxious, so that's why Agatha's like, Well, you should go. Just go.
She had the foresight to see that Elizabeth needed to be there.
And Elizabeth did go.
She needed to be there for both people.
I don't think she's worried about Francis cause she he left so you know with her wondering what what is he talking about? For sure.
¶ Jud Payne's Conscience and Elizabeth's News
Mm. And then the next scene kinda pops into do you remember um Ennis
All of like rock
Yes. And then Jud Payne is there. And do you remember what happened? This is so funny. Well and like Prudy comes up to him and say, what are you up to? Basically. But do you remember what Ennis said Ennis said to him? Dr. Ennis? Remind us. Okay. Well, you know, everyone's like talking about the I don't know, they're just kind of getting prepared for the trial. And um Jud's like over by himself.
Yeah.
Oh do you remember? Okay, so Anna says, Are you ill? And then what did Judd say? Yes. Yes. Yes, but exactly like that. Exactly like that. He always has the funny like retorts, doesn't he? His teeth are so beautiful. Oh yes. Shiny white smiles. Right? They look like they could. Right. Oh, he needed an electric toothbrush really bad. Mm-hmm. But yeah, so Prudy's on to him and she's kinda hackling him, like what do you do? You could tell he's getting nervous about it, like
I'm as innocent as a baby. There's more.
Yeah, that's what he says. Exactly. That's too funny. I think he's innocent as a newborn baby. That's too funny. So then yeah, I mean he ends up on the bench and he kinda wimps out and decides, I'm not gonna testify against Ross. Well I don't want to say wimping out. Maybe he f was actually like, I'm gonna
He's sober done.
I don't think it was His conscience. He did have a conscience. He's always saying that.
Prudy a little prudy action there too. Oh what I'm not gonna have any place to go after this.
Yeah, and he could tell she knew something was fishy and I like how he blamed it on his hearing and but they didn't hear him right. Right. He didn't hear them right. Yes. That was good. But then kind of what was it like a break from the trial and then Elizabeth and
Yeah.
She's pregnant. With child. Yep. So she's thinking if he dies. She got another baby on the way. Yeah. What'd you think about his dad coming in her dad coming in the courtroom and just start right off? After she tried to be nice and give him a hug before and like try to just reconcile and be nice and then he does. He just made it worry.
Yeah.
He made it worse. And I like how Caroline um tells Ennis, like, you know, I look forward to seeing that you acquit yourself, right? I'm not on trial and then she's like giving him that look, like, Are you certain of that? It's like she's kinda She's different right there. And he calls her out on it, you know. Do you think that's why she likes him? I think so too.
Oh work with your dog.
Yeah. Yep. Yeah. Right. But I feel like all the other guys probably kinda kiss up to her a little bit'cause she's rich and all that and he's Push that. She gets what she wants.
¶ Ross's Defiant Speech and Verdict Aftermath
So yeah, the the trial Ross is given a speech and It's not looking good. Like you think he's gonna kind of do good and behave himself and then he just to say and then he pulls a Ross. Yeah basically he's impulsive. He does, he's impulsive and he's stubborn'cause when they're in he's in prison and his attorney's like okay well you're leaving your affairs that you know you have a a child and a wife. I mean well no you have a family and a wife.
N not really like I mean it's he's not really thinking about it. He's so prideful and doesn't really like think He's like, no, I'm gonna say what I'm gonna say.
I thought it was an interesting thing too when it was um time to to list all his assets. Yeah. The wheel leisure, yes, but the other mine just kinda got pushed off and of course who knows that mine maybe. Yeah. So it's interesting that that's a part of his aspect.
So yeah, he just went all for it and just I mean, I guess if you think you might die anyways, you might as well just say what you want to say, right? Like he probably would have been sadder if he didn't voice his real opinion. Mm-hmm. And the verdict was? Guilty. Right. I think everyone was shocked. I love George's face. He just had that like repulsive look on his face. Yes.
Pasty white.
Yep. And Elizabeth Cross. Yes, she does. Which is kinda hard because how do you hide that from your husband, right? Because then they meet up like she has her meetup with Francis outside and he's like, No, by all means. You know, afraid. And you're like, Okay, I'll cry and this is so tough. But I mean, as we know, what happened earlier that day was Ennis went to back to his room and what was Francis about to do? No, that was the scene or what you think. We talked about that. Yeah.
Yeah. It was'cause that was before it and all that, yeah. Mm-hmm.
And that was still unresolved.
And he was still planning on trying it again. Right.
And uh and doctor Ernest w didn't take the gun away. Francis still had that. Of course he could get a gun anywhere but That was still in play up to that point.
He was really struggling because I think if you looked at that table he had like the letter that he had written for Elizabeth and then you saw all the crumpled up Elizabeth or if he had written more to other people like Verity, Agatha, who knows, Ross. Who knows? But it was just like that's it was sad. I felt sad for Well,'cause he was trying to make amends with Ross before. He was trying. But Ross is still kinda like, eh. Mm-hmm.
And then you think that maybe him and Verity are gonna kind of make up. Which they they almost kinda do, but then he's still like not. do anything but he's really stubborn about that. Yeah. He's just not gonna do it in at all. You didn't want your sister marrying a murderer, so he thought. Well obviously he has not hurt your sister. Like she is happy.
She's never been happy.
Yeah, she's fine. So obviously, okay, the guy's not what you thought he was. But he's probably upset too,'cause she left the house and she was the one that did. Just about everything. Pretty much. Yeah. Every like the slave. Yeah.
I think that he he thinks that some of Ross and his parting uh falling out may have occurred because Verity wasn't there. She was a stabilizing influence, I think, on on them and and wanted the uncle around a lot.
Well and he blamed Ross for her leaving, which we know that wasn't actually to Malta. I love these! Was there anything that happened between that? Trying to think of like verity and then go ahead. No, I was just thinking when he was on trial, I thought the turning point for him was when he The captain took the standard. Did he hurt anyone? Did he and so that captain really kind of helped his case, I think. For sure. Yeah.
Yeah. Set the tone.
It was like Dante's and Brno. Right. Yeah. Totally.
¶ Post-Trial Repercussions and Future Paths
So yeah. And I liked the shot where Caroline's talking with her suitor and then, you know, he's basically thinking they're gonna get together and he Well, you know, you're supposed to engage yourself to a man of substance and repute. It's like that's what I intend to do And then the next shot is Doctor Ennis and it's like You're out dude. Yeah, towards the end. That's for sure.
So yeah, now it's kind of what's gonna happen with Caroline and Dr. Ennis. Mm-hmm. There'll be more stuff to happen, I think. Trey will see that. So how does Ross deal with Jud when he gets back? Him and Prudy are behind him and then he's like, I think we're gonna look for some new servants and
Well see, and I took that a different way. I took that a different way because it correct me if I'm wrong, at that point, um um Judd wasn't working for Ross. Correct.
So he said they were kicked out.
So to me it was like I'm gonna throw you a bone, Jud. Uh you're gonna get hired back on. Cause then he said it and he looked back and Jud
Yeah, and then they both ran in. I totally forgot about that. So that does make sense. I just thought he was kind of messing with them because I forgot about that. Yeah. And then they're like, no, we're coming. Yeah. Yep. Okay, that makes total sense. And when they got back to Cornwall Yeah. Work for him and live, you know, his tenants. Yeah. It was very sweet to have them there. You know, they they're supportive of him.
He you can tell they respect him so much just because he looks at their ca you know, their cause are life and it's you know, that he looks at them as human beings, not like the rest of the other people who are. He doesn't have as much money'cause Bobby doesn't make'em pay. So but they appreciate that'cause he doesn't want them to suffer. Yeah. He had a welcome home party.
And it's funny, you said that, you know, you mentioned something about George sleeping with the gun. Mm-hmm. But he didn't think about it. Did you notice that when he was sitting there in his um His advisor, attorney, who would have tinkered, was like, You know, you left yourself exposed. Yeah. And then that's when he was just like. Oh right. prison and all that and so then the next thing you see him putting a gun by his bed just in case.
Yeah, and I kinda think too, that's just George. He puts on this facade in front of important people to make them think like, Oh, it's no big deal. Ross, the the best looking, most powerful guy in the in the community, is coming after me. I don't care, but deep down inside.
Then you see him in his little wife.
Freaked.
Like grandma His grandma. He wants to get the mine all the stock for the mine now so he's He puts his chin up and starts thinking of his new plan. Yeah. I do like at the end, you know, the the last part where um he shows uh Ross and Demelza in the bedroom, right? That is a cute the cutest scene too, because he's like, I thought I told you not to go to Boatman. Isn't it priceless?
Love that.
And what happens in that conversation? Do you guys remember?
What will I do with a husband that uh does not mind? What will I do with a wife Let's not stay at home.
It was it. Right.
And all they could do is both look at each other and go
Exactly. To have another baby. Yeah. That was sad. But that's weird. Don't wish such things, not right now. Well, uh dude, you got one on the way. But I started thinking about it. I wonder how long you could hide that, especially in those dresses. Did you think about that? Well they do kind of go like out. They do. So I guess yeah, I don't know. They don't eat a lot, so that's true. Yeah. Those cores cuts just don't let them eat so much.
Pies.
Right on. That's true. That's right. Those meat pies, I don't think we'd be able to survive on meat pies. They don't have any smoothies or anything. No. No. That was an exciting episode. Was there anything we missed that you guys wanted to discuss that kind of came up through the show that any little tidbits?
I just love how the beach is always kind of the center point of what happens, good or bad. You know, it it was just a natural place for the town to unite. Ross and Demelza ended up going there. And of course the friends uh graciously let them leave the party early'cause They hadn't seen each other in a while. You know, the the wonderful conversation in the bedroom about who's
Who didn't listen? Yeah. But that scene just shows how much they're going to be. Love each other. Right. Because for a while Ross was like, Come on now. But I think after she got sick and he almost lost her, that's when he realized, okay. Well he ha after the actually after the Christmas party. Yeah. When she then he saw it. But then it was when when he realized he might lose her, I think.
But if you think about it, if it would have been I was thinking about the trial and everything, if if that would have been Elizabeth, if Elizabeth would have been his wife, or maybe um what's the other uh annoying girl that was like trying to The hooker girl? No, not that one. No, no. Oh the young girl with the mother. I don't remember her name. Oh my gosh, I can't remember right now. You know which one?
that we're talking about. The very beginning. The one with the big bosoms. I mean they all have'em, but where Dis's dad called him out. Right. Don't tell we've done those things. But I was thinking if it had been any of those women, would they have had the gut? to do what Demelza did by going into because remember Demelza covered herself going into the assizes and tried to like she had a plan what she was gonna do. Yes. And she was gonna do it regardless.
She tried and at the trial was she losing it? No. She was like crying a little bit, but any other wife would have been like, Oh my god Like a said that when she went and talked to the judge, did that really hurt?
Well Francis oh well but it kinda does because Francis made an interesting comment to Tankard after the j the trial. They were they were talking about all the money they had spent.
George, do I think.
George. Uh George, yes. And um and and they were comparing all the money they had spent and couldn't influence the right people. And yet uh uh it was talked about uh Demelza going in and talking to the judge, even though he blew it up. uh he made the comment that yeah um that happened uh influence was granted without a dime changing hands and so obviously it had some some effect, at least to to George.
Right.
But the verdict was not guilty. Right. That's good though. And it was just another thorn in Georgia's side that money does not buy you power or have
Definitely.
And I think I had wrote down somewhere that I think Dwight had mentioned something like that was the most um ha I've heard more penitent speeches. Right? Yeah because Ross did his thing and he's like, you know, just kinda went off and I would do it again. Yeah. But really more eloquent. That was really neat that his friend was like
Uh-huh. Dwight's always like oh my gosh, what are you doing? Like true. His true loyal friends like trying to talk reason with him in every aspect of his life, which is a good thing.
Mm. My two friend indeed. Definitely.
So yeah, we're gonna have to wait and see what happens on the next episode. That's true. Episode three. Episode three. Here we go. Any other Yeah, can't wait. Any other no any other thoughts? Do we miss anything?
Maybe if you get poo thrown on you you don't
Yes. Oh good thing. I don't think it's enough rose water to get it at that stench off, right? Not enough rose water. I'd go buy some rose water just in case. You never know.
That's probably cool.
Yes. Don't do it. Well on that note, thank you to our special guests, Gary and Cindy, aka Ross and Demelza, Stun Stabble. Join us next time and we'll recap episode three of series two and our theme music was inspired by the original score for Pole Dark by Anne Dudley and was rearranged for this podcast by Dan.
I do.
Do. Oh, is that a do a goodbye? Uh yeah. I did a do or just peace out. Well just piece it out. Chow. Chow. Piece it out. Piece it out. Yeah. Yeah. What um malfunction. And peace out. And peace out. Or just kind of Look at your face.
Yeah.
