Ross's Grave Situation & Demelza's Worry

A

Hello, hello. Oh la welcome back everybody. This is back to Nampara, um, a recap of BBC's p period drama television. Um, my name's Christina. My name is Jonna. And today we're going to be discussing season two. Episode one. Yeah. Yes. We are already on the second season. It only took a couple of months, but you know, we made it. It's so funny how our intro is always like our first time.

No we can't. We're not professionals. We said that from the beginning. It's so for fun. It is. It just cracks me up because you're just like, why can't I just understand? Like get it together. I I should know this by now. Yeah. I might as well. I think we'll be on to season five and it's just it's just gonna start like that, it's gonna end like that. Pros. We'll be so much pros. Totally.

So epis season two, episode one, we're getting into some interesting things, some more drama. They just finished burying their daughter and now we got the next Prison to look forward to. Yeah. Well not look forward to. But Ross, Port Demelza. Yeah. It's like one stress after another. And if you think about it, that's probably why we like this so much.

Because it's like realistic. It's like it can't be just like butterflies and ponies, right? No. I mean death in prison happens, right? Yeah. Well back in that that time it did. It did. it just seem it s it seemed like there was a a moment of of a good Time at the family. Yeah and then Things went south and it just compounded. It did compound in a big way. Yes. And so Demels was very anxious, no doubt. She probably needs to be.

She just lost her baby, now she's gonna lose her husband. Yep. Possibly. And she didn't have an anti anxiety medications. No, there was none of that. No. There was none of that. Walking. That's all that was true. She got a lot of that. In Cornwall. And it could be a very nice way to de stress walking along those cliffs. It's very true. Just and beautiful Hendrona Beach. Exactly. Right. So maybe that's how she dealt with it. She probably did. We like to think so. So it's it's really serious, but

I mean He doesn't want to talk about it. No. And what's he doing? He's working in the mine, burying himself in work. And Tamelza's trying to say we need to talk about this. Dwight is trying to say we need to talk about this. Figure out how you're gonna get out of it. Mm-hmm. And he's like What's the point? I've been I just need to keep busy and distracted on other things. Mm-hmm. Like, well dude, you kinda do need to think about this.

Right. And I you know, when I was watching that I was thinking about it, d like do you think he's trying to mask his feelings or do you think he feels un I I think a little bit of both. Mm-hmm. I think maybe he's still in deni denial. I don't know. Yeah. But that would be hard. I mean, I can understand when you've got something really bad that's gonna happen, you kind of don't want to think about it, but You do need to think about it. It's inevitable. Yeah. Right?

Trenwith's Reaction & Elizabeth's Schemes

So the news goes. You know gossip happens anywhere, especially in small towns. So Especially when someone's circulating it about you. Mm-hmm. So then George. I know. So then um Trenwith catches wind. Frances, Elizabeth, and Agatha. Frances is talking about it. Mm-hmm. It's going around. Mm-hmm. So Then Francis, he he's trying to make peace with Ross and he shows his concern and he shows his concern about Demelza, asking what's gonna happen to her if if

things go bad and you're not here anymore, she's not gonna have anything to live off of. Right. And Ross is kinda like, What is Demoza to you? What's it to you? And he acknowledges, Well, she did save our son. We owe her. So at least he's trying. Do you think if something would have happened to Ross, do you think Francis would be the type of personality or character to do something about it? Like Care for it.

Do something. Like maybe that would be something that would finally make him do something. Mm-hmm. with that because she seemed sincere about it. They both appreciate she helped them. I thought about that too. Yeah. 'Cause it w if, but we know that the main character is Pole Dark, so we know he's not going away. Of course not. Come on. We just have to see how he gets out of it. They just give us anxiety about it. Yeah, even though you kinda know it's not gonna happen, right? You could see

Well there's a whole season, they're not gonna have it without him. Right. But you are kinda like, Okay, well how is he gonna get out of this? This is stressing me out. Yeah, it is. I was stressed out for sure. And at Trendwith when France was talking about Ross's dilemma, well Elizabeth was listening, right? Yes. And she didn't say anything. But what did she do? Hey George. What's up?

And she she's in that little section of the town where there's fabric, whatever, where you buy things and she's just like looking like all just like a little bit of a little bit of a bump into him or something, you know. I don't know. What do you think? It's possible.'Cause what did Fran what did George tell her in the last episode?

Mm-hmm. Yeah. I will not have my feelings misunderstood. Yes. It was more like that, basically. Yeah. I do not like comments. I will not have my feelings misunderstood. Yeah, basically. So she's gonna take advantage of that. Even though I mean, she knows he doesn't like Ross, right? Yeah. Just gotta know that they don't like each other.

But she knows I mean, you know, with the pretty face turning what is what is that thing? There's a movie where she's like, The wife can turn the the neck the neck Oh, I totally know. My big tag regretting? Yeah. It is the man. It turns the Okay. You know what? I just butchered that. I don't know what she said. Something about she could control what he's gonna do. Definitely. So maybe she's thinking she'll just kinda bat her eyes at him and he don't pop out raw.

Right. And then she goes that route and then she goes the route of writing the letter. Right. Ross and Demelza. And they're reading it. Write them over. And what does Demelza say? I mean, how does she feel about like, Oh, come over? Well, Danelza she goes. Mm-hmm. She's not opposed to it. She wants to make peace with'em. That's it. She wants to make peace. She's willing to do it. Mm-hmm. She's gotta pull Ross's leg to do it. Yep.

Exactly. But he does it for her, I think. Yeah. That's the only reason.

Tankard's Bribery & Defamation

Mm-hmm. And then this is the episode where um we see um Caroline Penvenin coming in, right? She passes Ross. Her and their cute little dog. I know. Horace. Horace. I'm sure Horace would like that. A little snorty pug. And then Tankard, your favorite friend. The slimy attorney. He is so creepy. Where the heck did he even come from? I mean, was it was it h George's friend in the past? Were it's like a business associate?

I don't know, but he's just creepy and slimy, like you said. Well any he came across because they needed to build a case against Ross. And do you remember at the beginning George's uncle was like He's like, you know, he's this murder for your Samson, your cousin's not gonna stick, right? Yes.'Cause he was already found dead. Right. Right. Right. And so but they're gonna try and tweak some things to make it look like Ross did.

Yeah. And so Tankard goes to who d who's the two people Lee goes to? Prudy and Jed. Yep. Yep. I love it. It does. And I do love Prudy'cause she's just like chip. Like like you know I liked your facial expression. I wish that they could see your face when you just did that'cause it was a perfect impression. It was a perfect proof. Shipwreck. And then Jud. Yes. And he gets something thrown at him because getting tempted with alcohol basically, right? To

to say something. But I feel like of the two, who would be the one you'd be worried about? Like Saying something. Jed. Yeah. Yeah. I was worried. I was just like, Oh man, that pool is gonna open his mouth. Yep. That taint fit taint right. Taint proper. Yeah. Yep. He is just gonna get banned. He just wants his alcohol. That's about it. It's not like he's buddies with Ross and if he can get something out of it, he'll he might just cave.

And which he does. He does. Yep. Gets some money for some booze. Mhm. And then it's why it's not around, of course.'Cause it's a little scared she's around. Yeah. And then um we get to the part where um There's the let's the Melza, you know, she has that peaceful attitude, so we talked about that already. Um and then let's see here.

Well pretty soon they're heading over to the trial, right? And Demelza's not going to go or so she tells Ross she's not going to be at the trial. I don't think he wants her there. Mm-hmm. Um, but she sneaks over with Verity. Verity shows up in her carriage to come pick her up. I know. Does Ross know you're coming? Of course not. Yeah. Yeah. I do like it.

But she has the goal of talking to Caroline's uncle, which is what is his name again? Ray Pen Vennin. Yeah. So she knows he's gonna be there. And she's kind of got a plan that she's gonna go and try. She's she's got a mission she's on. Mm-hmm. That's very noble of her and I would say very courageous of her. Yes.'Cause you can tell she's being she's gonna get blocked by by um George, which he does. Mm-hmm. And then we catch wind of also That pamphlet that's

That's right. So it's showing all these false things, false charges against Ross. So basically it's making everyone start being against him from the beginning. So when he goes on trial, it's not gonna have very many people defending him because they're all reading False. Yeah, it's accusations. Yeah, it's just horrible stuff. It was just like do you remember that he's like reading like um, the story on Ross and it's like this, um, notorious uh I think he said Doki? Doki. Yeah.

Did you catch that? I missed that one. And he was referring like, okay, he's married this notorious d dokie D O K Y or something like that and I looked it up and like, what the heck? What is a dokie? It was a prostitute. So the not only defamed Ross but it also like made it look like Demel.

A lady of the night. Well remember when she does go to see that guy and George sees her coming and he's like, Don't let her in, she's a harlot. Yeah. And so then they don't let her in, so then her plan kind of fails that night.

Demelza's Trial Struggles & Francis's Decline

I know. I just wanted to punch George so much that night'cause filled with so much the eyebrows off his face. Quoting someone who made up that quote. She'll know who she is. Well, and do you remember that De Melsa's trying to get to rave Pen Venon because she's trying to con like maneuver her conversation That's what she's looking for.

So then she goes and she ends up talking to the judge. He doesn't realize that it is Ross's wife. And here comes Dumb George again. Mm-hmm. Oh, this is Boldark's wife. And then the tables turn and the guy is not happy and yeah. She basically just made it worse. Mm-hmm. Um and uh that's it gets pretty intense because we're towards the end, right? And things are not looking so great. And then George, you know

Francis ends up going to town'cause Ennis is there to speak on his behalf for Ross, right? Mm-hmm. And then Jor Um excuse me, Francis just there to watch too, because it's his cousin's tribe. Yeah, why doesn't he go and try and defend him? I don't know. I mean we we find out later he's gonna go and try and commit suicide. Well can't you at least just try to do something nice before you

And he was on a path of path of courage, right? Because he just called George out. So just and was rude with him. Yeah, that's right. We've thought about that.'Cause he was just basically he's realizing that George is a bad guy. Yes. And you don't like'em. And he he's very upset with I mean, you can tell, which is the first time it's like the first few episodes you see this relationship between

Um, Francis and George like he doesn't really see George being that kind of a jerk guy. Like he doesn't see past the I'm his my friend. Right. And and then it's like when is that turning point, do you think? When he realizes, you know what? George is not good news, but I think when his conscience bothers him because he divulges the names of

The the car mine, the the owner. Do you remember that? Because he feels completely guilty. Which he wasn't gonna do it at first. No, but he was and then he gets in a moment of whatever, he probably was drinking or something. No, remember he was mad about very Oh yeah and then And so we have this time going on, and you can see how George's like jealousy of Ross is very evident and

Francis is very upset with himself that he I think he's just mad at himself and mad at for what he's been doing his friendship with George that he's done. And he starts Not liking to that George has been there a couple of times when he's not there, like even when he comes in and George is there talking to Elizabeth and Broad. uh her son, a little pony, and he sees her riding around the pony broom thing. And he's like, Oh, you're here again

I know. That was very awkward too. He senses something right then? Yeah, I think he does. I think a husband knows for sure when things are off. And Elizab Elizabeth's so I mean her composure's very good. She Yes. Yes. Well you know Francis does still kind of open up with Elizabeth saying he like he knows that she still loves Ross. Yeah. And she doesn't really deny it. She kinda feels bad for him. She'cause she could have just been like, let's just get it.

And then when he leaves, what does he say? God bless you. And you could tell the look from her face, she's kinda like, What? Mm-hmm. And she's pacing back and forth at number at Trinworth. Mm-hmm. And then Aunt Agatha's got her cards going. So Right. Wait a second. It looks very real to us. Right. And so then we we um We get to the part where Francis goes to like at the end and you see him knocking on on Verit.

And then he starts to open up to her a little bit. Like you're welcome my house, but not your husband. Yeah, and I got bummed out about that'cause I thought, Oh, okay maybe He is gonna be nice now, but then still not. Like he'll be nice to her, but still not really gonna happen because she wants him to accept her husband too. Even though it's like, okay, obviously he isn't.

He hasn't hurt her, she's happy. Maybe those were false stories or you know, just she's fine now, why don't you just get over it? But I think it's a whole pride thing and he didn't like that she went against his will. Trying though. Mm-hmm. I know, she's I don't know, she's just kind of that constant character that stays the same and doesn't really vary in a way. And she's just like very, you know, happy with her life and content and wants to

We'll see in the few next few episodes how she just wants to have a home. Mm-hmm. She wants to be at peace with her family. Mm. But do you think that's possible a trendwind? We'll find out. Right. I know. So we have to address too that um you know Francis is going downhill in his feelings, right? Yeah. So he he's he's in he envies, you know is it him who's envying Ross about I think so, just the courage that he shows and everything and all that he's accomplished and

He hasn't done anything and no one really cares about him. That's how he feels. Yeah. It's not exactly like he made a lot of good decisions lately. I mean people are gonna be frustrated with him, but he could turn it around. Mhm. Yep. He can. So he's kinda thinking ending it all is I know, which is sad. Mm-hmm. Yep.'Cause you know, it's like you're thinking, is that gonna really happen and and what does that mean if he would to end it all? It leaves you the to be continued.

Ross in Prison & Dwight/Caroline Meet-Cute

Which meanwhile, before it went to that, we're gonna rewind. Rewind. And it goes to Ross in prison, and George is coming up and talking to

like, hey, yo, I get you out of here And Roth's like, Never. Well and I th you know I just want his help. Right. And I think at this point George is extremely jealous that he has inspired such loyalty because he names off a few people that have like stood up for him, not only his friends, but even Ray Penben he mentioned, and then someone else I forgot to write the name of him down.

And it's sneaky that he's in there like, oh, you know, like I want to talk to you, but in truth he's there because he wants to. To fold. Right. To ask him for help. Right. And Ross doesn't do it. No, he's very stubborn. Yeah, and then he makes that comment, Well, thank you, because now I could tell Elizabeth I tried to help you, but you didn't.

I know he's crazy. So it's it's like that was kind of part of his plan too, so he can make a good name for himself with Elizabeth and be like, Hey, I asked I offered help. Try him out but he refused. Mm hmm. Right. And so then we get closer to the end of the show. Mm-hmm. And what do we see? Poor Francis. Mm-hmm. Yep, so we're gonna fast forward back to that part and

It's to be continued. You don't know what's gonna happen. Is Francis gonna be there or is he not gonna Yeah, and I know it sounds really depressing, but we can leave it on a lighter now, um,'cause this is the episode where Caroline And Dr. Anna's Meat. That's right. And I actually liked their Meat Cute because it's like Your Meat Q is that from the holiday. That's right. I learned that line. Nice. And I've only seen it like a hundred times.

Thank you. Yes. But I love how it's like her doggy sick. Right. She doesn't call a vet, she calls a doctor. A farrier. That's what it was. Back then it would have been a farrier. Oh farrier. That's what he said. To help animals, like I'm a people doctor. Yeah. And she's like, What didn't you want the very best? Have you ever had a pet? Yeah. What didn't you want the very best for them? I know. And then sweet old Dwight goes and

Or would you let them die on a formality? That's what it was. Yeah. Well, I mean at this point, I mean you know, he's And he's kinda feisty with her and think she likes that. Right. She's used these guys that kinda kiss up to her and Dwight doesn't do that. No. I like when she tells him he's like, Well if you're not good at your profession send someone else, right? She's so delight. Never mind. Yes. Yeah. I do like that she's just like

Because we'll talk in the next episode and she's very good excuse me. And very cutting and sharp with her words at what she should say. And what surprises me is when she says it, she always has the smile on her Very good. But to see what he's gonna say. I don't know.

Episode Conclusion & Future Teasers

But then that's what I'm saying, like I think she's in a like, okay, let's see how he responds to that. Mm-hmm. And then as we'll see later. Yeah. He he's pretty quick witted himself. He is. Yeah. They're they're good match. We gotta wait till the next episode. Good match. So on the next episode, we are hoping to have a couple friends with us that are Pole Dark lovers as well, and they've seen the episode, and I think they're excited.

about it so this should be a good one, a good lively conversation. Well thank you for joining us for this recap of um episode one, season two. And in the meantime, if you're a true Bulldark fan, you're probably gearing up to watch season five tonight. I know, it's getting intense. I love it. It was so funny. Last one was really fun there was one piece Someone's going cray cray. I know I don't want to talk about it but there was one scene where I watched it and I bust it up last

will tell you later. Okay. Because I don't want to give it a water. I don't know what it is. Okay. I know.'Cause it was just like, oh my gosh, what is going on right now? Better and better. It does. Oh, and we didn't want to forget that our theme music was inspired by the original score uh for Polderk by Anne Dudley. And it was rearranged by our friend Dan Gale.

So thank you again for tuning in, appreciate it. And always fun having to have these little discussions and nerd out big time. Totally. Um because this is one of those shows You will never get tired of watching over and over because I No watch it a lot. And I forget a lot. Yeah. That's why it's so exciting to watch it again and to that's why we're going back to the beginning because you do kind of forget all that stuff and you have to relive it. It's like watching Oliver again. Oliver?

All over. Not all over. On that note on that note, we should watch Winterness My Big Fat Creek Wedding. And the holiday. And yeah. Yeah. We're gonna watch those two movies'cause we quoted them. All right. Well thank you and have a good night and Sleep tight.
