Introduction and Episode Overview

A

And hello again. Hi, welcome back to us. Yeah. Back to Numpara, that is, and that's our recap of BBC's period drama television series polar. Yeah. My name's Christina, and this is Jonna. Yeah. And we'll be discussing, finalizing our episode eight from season one. Yes. And we're super excited'cause we've all been sitting and just kinda going back and rewatching, which I have again for the fifth time.

Well, it's just so exciting that we're on season five now. Um, so, you know, we're a little behind in this But we've you know, as well as this also now been watching the fifth season. Yes. It's exciting. It's exciting. It is. It just does make you want to go back and watch. the rest of the episodes, right? Yes.'Cause you kind of forget stuff that happened I know four seasons ago. It's so long. That seemed like forever ago. I know. I was really we were driving back.

from somewhere and I all I kept thinking was like oh my god am I gonna be able to see it tonight? Am I gonna be able to see my latest episode Sunday nights and now reserve purple dark eight o'clock. Don't ask me to hang out. Yeah, don't ask me. No, I'm gonna be running. Yeah. Unless you wanna watch pole dark. That's the only way you can hang out with it. There's only pole dark plans. That's it. There's no other plans on Sunday. It goes by so fast. It's like gone in the blink of an eye.

Demelza's Interventions and the Putrid Throat

So a little tiny summary of what we're gonna be discussing in the uh last episode of season one is, you know, Demel Demelza's meddling where it brought everybody. In the family, the business being in jeopardy, then Trentwith being ill, and then D Melsa intervene. Intervening. So intervening, excuse me.

So we start off with Damelzo trying to patch things up in the family. Mm-hmm. I think that's really nice that she's so she's trying. Mm-hmm. She feels bad. Right. And just a sense of loyalty to her family.

She's kind of the only one trying to make peace. No one else is trying. Everyone's still just mad at each other. She has a huge heart and you kinda see it towards the end where Ross says something to her. We'll talk about it at the end. But it is true. It's like, you know, I mean I know this is a television and

It's not real life. It is But it does speak to each of you know, like a character to a person when things go south in your family anyway. So Um and then the the this is the subject the first time that the subject of the putrid throat comes up or Do you remember the name of it? It's like a saurus. I don't it's like a dinosaur name. It is. Strangulatory

Stran morbis strangulatoris. It's like a dinosaur. Quote me on that. Yeah, morbulus strangulatorus. It's like a brontosaurus. Yeah, it's like a brontosaurus. Yeah. In your throat. Oh, I remember things. A bronosaurus sitting on your throat. Yeah. Makes a little sense now. So the they talk about these sh I'm not. The symptoms like um I guess you get ulcers and fever, skin rashes. So that would be the equivalent of today's um probably back in the day diphtheria and today's stress.

Man, probably combine those things together. It doesn't sound good. Not at all. So they said that three were dead and souls, so it's obviously something that's gonna be part of the episodes on this one. And then we jump to the scene where um they get a letter from Verity. Yeah, and all is well. Look at that. She is happy. Demolza did great. Did that not fix the problem?

No, we also have to be all poopy pants about it. He had kind of a really ra scowl looking look on his face, like But even he had to admit like He said something about her meddling, like it wasn't I guess good came out of it. Like she could be happy about that, but she still feels

Fardy's happy. She is. This is an okay thing. I know. She d it it turned out you were worried they didn't murder her. No. That's what they were worried about, right? Yeah, that she was gonna get murdered by And they didn't like that Verity got taken away from Trentworth. Basically right, like when Demella goes to help, that's Aunt Agatha saying like you shouldn't have taken her away. She's needed here to be our slave. Pretty much basically. Pretty much.

Illness Spreads to Trenwith; Demelza's Courage

So then um then we catch when that Trentwith is ill. The servants are ill are unwell, that's what it is. The f first the servants are unwell. Yeah. And then they jump to the dining table and you can see um George and Elizabeth. Frances and Elizabeth. Oh yeah, thank you. Frances and Elizabeth. Yeah, they don't look so good. Mm-hmm. And what is And the baby? Yeah. He's like all red as rashes on his face. Oh yeah, but then they're sitting at the table and Agrika she's like

Man, I'm ninety three years old and I still have the appetite of a twenty year old and she's just going for the bread and the soup and they're looking at her like disgusted. Like she ain't sick. They feel like crap, but Yep. And then that news comes to Ross um the it that that Turnwith is well from Dwight, I think Trent Dwight tells him that Turnwith

Is sick. He doesn't specify who, so he kinda gets on horseback, right? He's going out already as it is, and then he turns around. Yeah. To go check it out. And then that other doctor Doctor choke. Yes. He's just gonna choke on his words later. It's like, oh it's just a common cold, they're fine. Mm-hmm. They're on the men. They're not on the verge of death or anything. So then he just it's like okay, so he leaves. Right. But

Later on. Who is it? Jenny? Jenny, the servant lady, the little young girl. Yeah. Tells Demelza otherwise. Mm-hmm. Yeah. And so, you know, that's dumb also takes some action there. Mm-hmm. Which was brave of her, she knew how contagious it is. Yeah. And yeah, she still went. I was a little nervous about that. I was nervous about it too. I was like, Don't do. Don't don't You're gonna get sick. I know. I already foresee something bad happening right here.

I know. And then we also have kind of clips of um knowing that the m Ross's business is not doing so well and then I think George is pushing his buttons like let me help you like he keeps following him. Do you remember? I feel like he's doing it to get Ross finally desperate enough to ask him for help and Ross is like, That's the last thing I'm ever gonna do but George gets irritated about that'cause his plan isn't working and

Yeah, it's uh mm Ross is not in a good way financially right now'cause he can barely like feed his his peoples and his family and It's got no money, he's losing stuff on the mine and now that mine might the other one might close. Yeah. It is. And then you see Damelza going over to Tr um Trenwith and And then it's interesting that part when France was like, Who's here? kinda like, do you remember that? And um Elizabeth's like, Oh, Demelza's here.

How kind of her, you know. I thought he was gonna say get her out of here. But then he was like that's nice of her type. He must really be feeling bad if he's that sick to say nice things about her. I know. They were really sick. It didn't look very well. It was like quarantine that house, but no, that was really nice that she went. Yeah.

Demelza Falls Ill; The Baby's Tragic Fate

So then it's it uh Demelza comes home, she comes home at the same time Roth does. It's like in the evening, right? Almost dusk and he's like, What are you doing out at dusk? you know, don't do nothing. But she said like, Oh yeah,'cause it could be dangerous. But then she told him, I don't want to keep any more secrets from you and he just kind of looks at her like, Oh great, what now? And of course wasn't happy to hear that she'd been over there because

A good thing to do. No, not with having a family. So you know that that's not gonna go well because the the show goes, the thunder rumbles and then the baby starts crying and you know what that means when the baby's like fussy crying is like And then it shows to Melzin she's already starting to not look good, like she's getting sick. Yeah. And it happens so fast. Right. All in one night practically. She's like astro.

Yeah. So it's a long, exhausting night. It starts making your own throat hurt, like just watching that like my throat's really dry too. I need some tea. I need some tea right now. I can't watch this. I'm observing all these emotions. It's too much. And um so d Ross goes to Dwight. Like it's a you know, it's not he doesn't care. He goes in the middle of the night and Dwight comes.

He's always in the rescue, Dwight. Such a valid doctor. Heroic doctor in a way. He's such a great character of a doctor. We like Dwight. Yes, we love Dwight. Um So then we get to that part where it's getting to where Demels was hallucinating, right? Yeah. Right. Do you remember that? Yeah, she's just going crazy, like in her sleep. The fever's getting to her and it's like she's picturing Elizabeth that's gonna take Ross away and then her scary dad. Like

Basically everyone's just saying, Give up, don't bother. So then that's probably not making her fight very hard. Mm-hmm. That was kinda creepy. All these like worries and certainties of life or have family issues or like the hallucinations that she has deep down in the past. Yep, and then we hear the next is like carrying that baby casket and be with Demelza it's like their focus was going on her and then Dwight goes to check on the baby and the baby's like dying.

George's Confession and The Shipwreck

That's brutal. I cried. I knew it was coming and it's still me. I know. Carrying that little tiny It's okay. Yeah. We need to move on to Rubble. And you know, you see all these people supporting at the service, right? That was very kind, everybody. And then we get to the part where um I think it comes to the part, remember that um I don't George is having breakfast with his uncle?

The uncle basically says, Oh, he won't be worried. Well, he won't be Yeah, he's not gonna be trying anything right now'cause his daughter just died. Mm-hmm. And it's like you see on George's face he actually looked like he feels sorry for him. I know. Like you see a little bit of what? Like And then it seems like he's kind of saying, Let's just back off for a little while, but then his uncle just keeps pushing things.

Like so you can see George might have a heart and I feel like if his uncle wasn't there, he would have just left him alone for a little while because he probably didn't. Right. He's like the tin man who who can have a heart. It's there somewhere. Yeah. Well he's got a heart for your uh Elizabeth. We sure do. Basically confessed his love for her and she's like you must not say such things. I know, that's like I cannot hide it anymore.

It's kinda bold for, you know, being, you know, a married woman in him. But maybe he knew that he could get in there and like maybe. I guess it didn't really matter. He's going for the gold. Yeah. And he can get what he wants, I guess. Yes. I mean he does ultimately. He does get what he wants. He sure does. And then um

Aftermath of the Shipwreck; Ross's Devotion

we get to the part where there's uh a shipwreck. Yeah. Right. And then George's cousin's ship is wrecking. And all the goods are going to Ross's beach.

So which is cool for them'cause Ross sees it and he's like, Okay, I gotta get my people down here so we can get the stuff that gets washed ashore. Mhm. But when George and his uncle find out They obviously are not happy because it's there's a cousinship, but now it's gonna be another excuse to get Ross, right?'Cause they know it's gonna be on his beach.

And then when one of the soldier guy comes, he basically is telling George, Well, it's not illegal for them to take the stuff. It's on his property now. So but then George goes and hands him a sack of money saying no. It's ille it's le illegal. Mm-hmm. It's our cousin. And it it is an interesting time of that because we're not It you know, r I guess customary if you have service you provide for your guests and Ross didn't, so that's why this was his opportunity to provide.

All those people who came. So he looked at it as an opportunity to make sure that everyone was fed and had something which I mean he had good intentions, but he didn't know how that was gonna pan out, which is where George comes in. And um George comes in and then those other the other village of people, what were their names?

The luggans, the people from a legon or something like that. Leggen miners. Okay. So then they wanted to go and steal some stuff. Yeah. Then all the fighting broke out. Yeah, they wanted to get and he tells the people'cause those are people like in that were close to him that were like, you know Surry up and leave because the miners are coming sort of thing.

Do you like how Jud's like trying to carry this half naked statue lady and he's like, I'm taking this and it is just and then he trips and he's like I don't know. It was one of those stupid moments. Trying to couple feel on a stupid Statue. And then it breaks to like Elizabeth coming to look after Demelza, huh? Mm-hmm. That's interesting.'Cause yeah, she's fading. I mean it was nice of her to do'cause the Melza went to go help her. Mm-hmm.

But yeah, so then Ross comes in and and Elizabeth is helping Demelza. Mm-hmm. And she says, What can I do? And what does Ross say? Mm-hmm. I don't remember you remember. Pray pray to God that I don't lose the love of my love. Yeah, pray to God that I don't lose the love of my love. And you could see in Elizabeth's face was like

Oh I'm the love of your life. And then and then Tamelza wakes up and says, J is she taking you from me? And he says, She'll never take me away from you. I know. And then you really see it in Elizabeth's face. Peace out. Yeah. But I mean it was one of those desperate moments, right?

The like it's really a tough moment you don't want to lose your Because he just lost the baby. I think that when his daughter died he realized, Oh my gosh, like she could die too. Like this is serious. Mm-hmm. And then the worst part is like Demelza gets better and then I know, that's brutal. I think that's even that's almost worse than Ross carrying the casket. It's like him having to tell her

Farewell and Ross's Arrest: Season One Finale

Yep. In a good way. The part where George declares his love to Elizabeth was like when he was upset after knowing his cousin had died and he was just really worked up. And remember he was walking over there? Yes. And then oh god. He declares himself. So no longer have my feelings with understood. Maybe I like them.

We should um g start with that every time we talk to someone although not declaring our love. Maybe declaring our frustration I will no longer have my feelings misunderstood. But I like it. People would just say they don't know what to say if you said it that way anyway I will know that. I love it. We need to bring back this language to modern day time. I love it.

All right. Anyone who watches a show or any period piece shows, we would all be able to talk to each other. We get it, right? Right. Definitely. And so then um at the end we have Demelza and Ross, right?

And yeah. She w you know she keeps asking about the baby, so he takes her to the cliff, kinda like I don't know if She says she wishes she could have said goodbye. Yeah. So it was like she had the little bracelet and it was kinda like letting the bracelet go was kind of her way to say goodbye, I think. And that's when um because the way you know, like Ross tells her he you make me ashamed, um you know, your heart is so

Because she was saying, Promise me that now things are gonna be okay between us and Francis and she just wants the peace and then she says at least we can look at their baby is saved. If any good came out of this, they didn't lose their baby. Right. Even though they just lost theirs, but she's saying that's the only way they can help her get through it. Wow. Yeah.

Which you feel like this is a crucial moment in their marriage, right? Where where Roth sees the value of Demelza, which to me she has value from beginning but see that she's just so stuck on Elizabeth. Like I see it. And now And then here comes the soldiers. As if they haven't gone through enough already. Now Tamza's gonna get her husband taken away. Mm-hmm. He be going to jail. And the wind is sweeping their hair around and it's so dramatic.

So that the yeah, this kind of finalizes the end of the season one. Which was kinda it was exciting, right? I thought made me want to watch more. Right. I still want to watch more now. I was hooked. Yeah, you're hooked. You just kinda get drawn into it. And you know, it doesn't matter like what your style and preference of of choice of movies are. I feel like just the people I've talked to, like I've had a few people that are not into period pieces.

And they're sucked in. They do a good job with sucking you in. They choose a story to know what happens next. So much drama, so much to something for everyone. There is something for everyone. So Well that will be it, right? Yeah, and next time we're gonna move on to season two. Right. And you know, it shouldn't be like another month before you hear from us again. You know, end of summer, beginning of fall. All this c crazy life stuff. Lots of new things happening and then unfolding and more.

Spicy stuff coming up too. Yeah. So we'll be watching the old seasons with the new season now. We will. And Yeah. Trying not to talk about the new season. We won't. But it's exciting. Don't skip to the season five. I wouldn't. No, you have to really go from the beginning. Yeah. Well I mean if you've never seen it before. Yeah, if you've never seen it, don't skip. Yeah, don't skip. You gotta watch every single So we'll miss something. All right.

Well wonderful. Have a good day y'all. Yeah. Have a good day you all from what? Louisiana? Yeah. Well maybe they're listening from Louisiana. Well, um join us next time as we recap that season two. Yeah, episode one and two. And so we'll go on that and um our theme music as you've heard before is the original score score is by Ann Dudley, but it are a little cool little Yeah, Dan Gale is our rearranger of music. Yeah. Rearrange these beats, yo! Eventually, eventually. This is it this time.
