Today on five minute Monday, we'll talk about where you can find music to use in your podcast without getting sued. Welcome to five minute Monday where we bring you the best tips and strategies for building your podcast in five minutes or less. So if you're new here, consider subscribing. Now, late last year a poker podcast was sued by a major record label for using their music without permission. Now you don't want to be like that poker podcast.
You don't want to put yourself at risk by using music without the proper rights and permissions. And it might be tempting to pull the latest a top 40 track and throw it on your podcast because you think it'll make it sound better, but it's not worth it . It is not worth the risk when there are other alternatives. All right, so in this episode I want to talk about what kind of music you can use and where you can find it. All right, so number one, you are looking for royalty free music.
That's the big term that you need to be familiar with when it comes to music you can use for your podcast. And all that royalty free means is that the artist, the person who created the music has made that track available for free or purchase and you own the rights to use that song. You can use the song in any of your episodes, all of your episodes without fear of repercussions because the artist designated it as being available for use in that way. So that's what you're looking for.
You're looking for royalty free music. Now there's a couple places where you can find music that fits this category that you can use without having to second guess yourself. And I'm going to break it down based on cost and how much music you're going to be using. All right, so the first option is free and that's just using soundcloud. So when you go into soundcloud, you can search based on titles, based on themes, based on moods, those kinds of things.
Now you will want to set a specific filter on your search to make sure that the only tracks that you see are going to be available for use that are going to be royalty-free .
All right, so what you want to do is in the filter on the left side of your page, if you're looking at a desktop, you want to choose tracks and then you want to choose either to use commercially or to modify commercially, and what that'll do is it'll filter out all of the songs that are not going to be available for use on your podcast and only show you the ones where the artists said yes, you can use this for any kind of commercial use or even modify it if you want to.
All right, now, artists that offer the tracks for free, typically ask for recognition, either in the show notes or somewhere in the episode they're looking for a shout out. And so you know if you do decide to use soundcloud, go ahead and pass on the good Karma as a way of saying thank you for the go ahead and give them some love. Now a second option, and this is what I'm going to suggest for your theme music, is using a stock music site like audio, jungle.net there.
You can purchase stock music, so a little bit higher quality than what you might find on soundcloud. And it's something that you can use, you know, on your podcast over and over again. So if you are using one theme song, then go ahead and just invest in an audio jungle or stock music track so that way you don't have to worry about, you know, the, the, the fuzz coming after you later on.
Now, when I first got started , uh, I started with soundcloud because I had no money and no investment that I could put into the podcast and then eventually went to audio jungle to purchase the theme songs for my podcast. But if you use multiple music tracks or if you'd like to mix in different styles, depending on what you're talking about, then a subscription site like sound stripe might be right up your alley.
And sound stripe is what we use here at Buzzsprout for our podcasts and our youtube videos. And those kinds of things. And you can do that for just $15 a month and that will give you access to unlimited music. That's right. All the music that you can download.
So if you are incorporating multiple music tracks or you like adding different music in each episode, then I recommend you going with a subscription music site like sound stripe, where all the tracks are royalty free, a bale available for use for your podcast. So don't make the mistake of using the latest Ariana Grande's song in your podcast. Use One of these methods to find great royalty free music to use in your podcast.
