It has become a tradition around January 1st to create new year's resolutions.
And some of the more common ones that you've probably heard of are people joining a local gym, eating healthier, reading more books. But most people fail to follow through and actually quit their new year's resolutions within the first few weeks of the new year. So let's talk about a few podcasting resolutions that you should consider making that will actually help you get closer to your goals and that you'll actually be able to stick with.
So the first podcast resolution that you should consider is not missing an episode. Now, podcasting can be a grind. You rarely get a break if you take it seriously and you're trying to put out high quality podcast episodes on a consistent basis and it can really wear you down. But resolve to put out a new episode every week or whatever your frequency happens to be. So if you're a daily podcast, more power to you, put out a podcast every day.
If you're at every other week podcast, make sure you're putting out two a month, whatever it is, resolved to not miss an episode. And the reason is you want your audience to know that they can count on you, that if you put out an episode every Monday, they know when they wake up and they're getting ready to go to work on Monday morning, that you are going to be there. And that consistency develops routines.
And when your listeners get into a routine with your podcast , that will lead to loyalty and growth. So you'll need to become proficient in scheduling content ahead of time to anticipate days that you're sick or you're traveling or you just can't get to it. But consider not missing an episode as one of your podcast resolutions. The second resolution that you should make about your podcast this year is to improve your episode quality. Now this could fall into a number of buckets.
Number one would be audio quality. And that's typically what most people think about when they think about improving their quality. So maybe this is the year that you invest and get a little bit better microphone. Maybe you need to really focus on organization and episode flow so that your thoughts come together cohesively. You're able to tell a compelling story that your audience wants to listen to and looks forward to and you can even focus on your podcast voice.
Now what I mean by that, when you're talking on a microphone, there are certain things that you want to avoid that aren't as big of a deal in your normal day day conversations. So things like saying , um, it might not be a big deal in normal conversation, but when you're doing it on a podcast, it really comes to the forefront and can actually be distracting.
So if you haven't spent a lot of time focusing on improving your episode quality after you get your podcast up and running, then that could be another resolution that you can make next year that will actually help you improve. The third podcast resolution that you should consider making is to double your audience.
Now, we don't really talk about numbers a lot at bus route because it's a really poor way of measuring impact, but the reason that double your audience is a good resolution is that you're only competing against yourself. You're not worried about what podcast x is doing down the street. You're just worried about focusing on your audience and trying to reach more people so you can make a positive impact on them.
All right, so if you have a hundred listeners, think about how can you find a hundred more this year, or if you have a thousand listeners, think about how you can find a thousand more this year.
