¶ Podcast Intro and Alan Moore Comics
Welcome to Podcast the Ride, the show where before every recording, I yell, Got a Blast, and no one likes it. I'm Jason Shard and that laugh is Mike Carlson.
Yeah, I am here and got a blast can mean I guess a couple things, really. I guess it's pretty open ended. It doesn't necessarily mean one thing or the other. To me it means like I gotta rip a big fart.
Yeah, that's true. This is the well no, this is the fun of playing in the fields of ambiguity as I
Dear boy.
Dear boy.
You wouldn't mind saying some of your famous characters like
Uh sure.
Moriarty.
Uh
Uh that was the character we named you. Horny Moriarty.
Yeah, corny warrior.
Professor Moriarty from uh Sherlock Holmes.
Uh Mori already was a bit of a cat, so I feel like that's an
Hurry.
Was Maury already. Which one was the horniest of all the different
I would say I would guess probably Andrew Okay.
Maybe. I'm not a Sherlock Holmes expert. I like the idea of it. I like the idea of making jokes about it, but I really have not watched much or read much. Yeah, I'm a bad reader. Anyway, Scott Gardner is not not here, but he'll be here s very soon.
Yeah.
He's not going to be able to do
He said he had to take a phone call and he ran out of the room. I don't know that this has ever happened in the history of the
This could also be a little bit more than a little bit. Is he setting up a
Is it a bit?
I don't know.
I don't think so. I think maybe it was just some sort of important phone.
I think he'd he'd pull a bit.
I don't think
Okay.
Our guest could weigh in on if he thinks it's a bit or not. It didn't feel like a bit, but anyway, you
Yeah, sure. It's uh returning to the show from Talking Simpsons. It's Henry Gilbert.
Hello and I I came here with my pet dog Goddard to help me out.
Mm-hmm.
Yes, you're very yes. I w people don't know how big of a fan of the certain topic you are. But that's how big.
Well Mike, you th you thought that Moriarty was just a character on Star Trek.
Oh yeah, as far as I knew that was just a holodeck character. Any historical reference or literary reference that was on Star Trek I just assume was created by the writer. That's how dumb I am. That's how stupid I am.
No, I I also think of Moriarty as the his character in the Allen Moore comic A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. He seems there he is a real like jerk in that he like uh he he calls Sherlock Holmes a sodomy.
Right. Okay. So is that and that's just sort of the way he talks, but he's not is he sort of an Austin Powers type character in that? Or does he ever say like I do I make you honey, baby?
trick in the first League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is that like it keeps being a reference to and I'm spoiling the first six issues of the comic They're playing like it's a James Bond thing and they're like, Oh, we're bossed around by M. M is the one in charge, and you think it's you know, a reference to the m mm James Bond's boss. Uh huh. But actually the M stands for Moriarty and he's actually the one running the evil guy behind the scenes tricking the league into doing bad de doing bad
See that sounds cool and fun and exciting and twisty, but I hate to I hate to critique Mr. Moore's work.
Oh, yes.
Beautifully drawn, uh, sometimes exciting, but often very dry. And let's not forget the interminable text pieces at the back of it.
Yes. If you have trouble with the text pieces and watchmen, times that by four and that's what's in lead.
You know, I've never read it and I am a comic book reader, but not often a novel reader, not a long form fiction reader. So but so what you're telling me is I shouldn't read this'cause it's too hard. Okay, got it. Mm-hmm.
I would say of the Almore America's best Top ten is probably the most Reader friendly. Top ten or Tom Strong?
Right. Well I'm not getting I'm not getting into those anytime soon.
Okay.
It might be years for down the line.
If you like police procedurals, top ten is a fun one.
Yeah.
And uh and if you like Gnostic Magic explained to you very slowly on gorgeous, gorgeous line art, read Prometheus.
Okay. Also pretty impenetrable, but beautiful.
Are you two guys right now trying to make Scott kick in the door and say, Give me back my podcast with all this comic book talk?'Cause that's what it feels like where there's like a test going on to see how long we can keep Scott just like lit like one ear to the door out there. I don't know. Maybe now I feel like you're all in on something and I'm not in on it. That's what I'm feeling now. I'm feeling crazy.
That's okay. You'll get it on these uh twenty five year old comics, many of them out of print and difficult to find. Okay.
¶ Japan Trip Anticipation and Scott's News
Okay. Well, as long as that will eventually happen. But Henry, let's talk real quick because we are going to talk about Jimmy Neutron and his very I guess long running ride. I would say that eight years or so is a long run.
Pretty good.
Yeah. And I did want to like talk about some highlights because anytime anyone's going to Japan, we want to hear about Japan because we only want to be in Japan.
Oh yeah. I I just listening to Nick Weiger talk about and on multiple podcasts going to Japan, hearing him talk about it, I was like, I wanna be in Japan right now doing stuff. I And and I uh m my husband and I, we're big theme park people and I I think last time I was on here we we went to the uh Pride night at Disneyland. We were talking about that. So we have maxed out like Tokyo Disney.
Like we have done uh we we went to Fantasy Springs and did that. And we went to Universal Orlando for the f uh we went to Universal Osaka for the first time. Uh this uh last uh fall and that was awesome. Like it was so cool to see all the stuff like locked in time like the Beetlejuice ride. Oh yeah. Or what not ride, the uh the the s song and dance.
So the graveyard review.
And then we went uh but we also wanted to do a lot of stuff like Slightly off the beaten path is we went to I'm wearing a hat from it right now from Dragon Quest
Oh wow.
It's a a very understated hat. But basically there's uh about an hour out of Osaka's is Of Kobe. And in Kobe, they have there's been this thing happening in Japan of like for big tax breaks, I think, they take old parks that people are barely going to. Okay. So
Oh my god.
Not a bit.
Okay. No, not a bit. Uh yeah. Hey, hey, hey Henry, thanks for being here, guys. Hey, hello. Regular guys. Hi. Uh uh sorry, I you know, I don't like to do that. It's very important. I was getting a call uh uh from my agent and I just felt I didn't mean for that to take precedent over this but I But I'll let you guys and the listener know first that I I got the call, uh uh I I got the gig. I will be directing Propeller One one way night coach two.
Uh uh the sequel. I'm making the sequel to John Travolta's
Uh
film the for which he would just want an honorary uh palm d'or. Uh uh it's his his very personal story about
Right a little bit
a boy and his precious first flight and falling in love with airplanes for the first time and I'm gonna make the movie about the second flight. Wow. So uh oh yeah, there's just so much buzz and yeah yeah. J uh John just and I've been meeting with John. He feels just like
You just go.
Right. Oh I should have shy let me fill it in. Travolta.
Yeah.
I don't mean to be all name droppy Henry, but we're we're getting to be we're getting to be buddies and I I've been helping him uh I've been giving him hair advice, I've been helping him pick out wigs. Uh and yeah,'cause he reversed he's not pit bulling it anymore. He the
Yeah.
He's back to hair. Yeah, I I'll I'll admit it. That's that and that that kind of boldness of vision is what helped me get the job. But uh I think he feels like it's just too personal for him to like It's so emotional. He cried so much making the first propeller one-way night coach. That he doesn't feel like he he's it's too raw for him to make propeller one way. I'm gonna take it over fine.
Well, congrats.
Oh, I don't mean to be so Hollywood. Okay. Well what did I what did I walk through?
¶ Unique Japanese Theme Park Experiences
We were just talking about Japan. Henry's been to Japan and uh he was just telling a story about going to certain out of the way place or not the standard place.
No, there's there's well there is like uh but congratulations.
Yeah, well thank thank you for acknowledging. I was I wa I was waiting. I was like I don't know if I want to shift back to Japan until I've gotten the the firm congratulations.
Uh but but there are uh there's there is like this uh government I think push to have there be more tourist spots outside of Tokyo and so like a bunch of stuff keeps opening up in the last like five, six years. Like have you guys heard about like the Pokemon Park that just opened up? Yes. That yeah, they they take these big old parks that have were like built in like the sixties or seventies that were kind of being underused and so
Then the government, I think, through some substance works with these big IPs and fills them with like themed stuff. And so i in Kobe on Waji Island, there's a place called Ninjin Nomori, which I think means two dimensional park. And it's filled with mascot characters or two dimensional forest. And so I went to uh The two things I did that I would say people should definitely check out if you've ever played a Dragon Quest RPG or Final Fantasy or any like Japanese RPG.
There's like an escape room type deal that you're basically like walking around a whole like town from Dragon Quest and figuring things out and finding secrets and getting in combat and you have a boss fight. And every and they have theme food but and then I did Shin Godzilla Zipline. I never did a zipline before and it is the specifically the Godzilla from the Shin Godzilla movie from twenty sixteen.
His head built full size, his head is just in the ground, and you zip line into his mouth like a the thing and then and then you get like a laser gun to zap like basically a laser tag gun and zap things of like okay destroy you you actually get a story a themed story of on a zip line uh well after the zip line okay now that you've zip
Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
So like now that you've ziplined in, grab your gun and shoot all the last remaining particles of Godzilla.
Wow.
Wow, that's awesome.
Jude is nuts, make sure he can't reproduce.
Yeah.
I don't I mean I what I imagined was cool, but this is probably twice as Aggressive version of God.
It's it is scary. Um I I I had never done a zipline before either so it was extra.
Um I don't think so. There was like a really, really little kid version of it at a Pirates Cove Park, but it wasn't like a full It was some really, really low not low rent, but just a little bit. Low stakes. I would do I would do it with the Godzilla, I think. Because I want to go in a
And and I got to get themed food of like uh Curry shaped like uh curry with rice shaped like Yeah, that's great.
That was one approach here. Uh uh w do we what is your you know, we've talked about degrees of scaredy cat I don't know. equipped for zip lines, or are they sort of nothing?
Well, you know what, once it's over it du it did feel like nothing, but when you're sit when you're at the front of it about to be like shoved off It does feel just a little like well there's just these two cables here and I hope this place is run. I I'd say if this was versus a zip line in Las Vegas versus in Japan, I trust Japan has better
To the Fremont Street zipline.
W which is to tie it all together straight uh uh is called slotzilla. Uh strange The two the two like zip lines that we can conjure very quickly are both Godzilla related in some way. I think the Godzilla theming ends there. In fact I don't I'm not sure I understand the name Slotzilla beyond that.
I thought they had a giant slot machine looking at
I think though that the zipline is part of that. I belie I think what you're describing might be the tower w from which you depart.
Oh before you
Zip line.
This is underneath the canopy at the front.
This came up on the uh the episode we just did on the second gate about the earth part whatever the hell that park that never got built was. That one company that was putting designs together did slotzilla.
Oh yes. Yeah. Well that's um I don't know if that's a feather in their cap.
Uh I looked to see what else they did and it seems like mainly Slotzilla was the was the output.
Might need a little a little bit more
The pictures looked nice for whatever Earth Quest. I can't even remember what it was.
It was an Earthquest? I believe so.
The the zipline though what the scariest part for me was at the end of it, I was like, oh, how do you stop? And the that that was at least at this one I can't speak for all zip lines. You end up it's like you're going between two platforms. But the last platform, you basically I overshoot the platform as part of it. So you swing over just open nothing as you're stopping. And so for a second you do think like
Oh, I died. Uh this I'm about to fall. And then you swing back and they re hook you and everything's fine. But that that was the scariest part.
¶ Ghibli Park and Exclusive Anime Merch
Oh yeah, yeah. This this is in this big huge park that the the only downside of the of these parks, and I went to like three others is they all close at like five between five and six, like when the sun is down.
Then you're like,
And well and also they have like okay, the last bus right like we had to run We to Godzilla and then we're like, Okay, we gotta eat and then I Wait, the last bus is leaving like in five minutes. We gotta go now or else we're gonna have to like call a lift in and calling a lift in Japan, they'd only just recently opened them up and they are like triple price there.
This is legit good travel. Which I feel But you're giving uh uh Some good intel. If you feel free to defend that point.
Guess you're right. I suppose. I feel like there'll be like tips and tricks or something once in a while. Usually maybe actually just like menu suggestions.
Oh sure.
Like film strip film strip fries were good.
Yeah.
Yeah. Well it's mainly if yeah, if you were travelling what's good advice if you were travelling seven years ago.
Yeah. There's a lot of that on this show.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Home strip fries were good.
And uh and a similar park I went to was Ghibli Park in uh Adachi. About ninety minutes between it's like right between Tokyo and Kyoto on the train on the uh bullet train. Ghibli Park is another of those. It's like a gigantic park. They opened up like there's a they call it the warehouse, so I'm not degrading it.
But they have a gigantic indoor warehouse where they rebuilt just like multiple streets and locations from the films. And you can see like, oh, you know, take pictures with full recreations of sheet scenes from not just like Kiki's delivery service or Totoro, but also from like the wind rises or uh ocean waves like Yes, yes. Okay. Now that that was the fun so here's the thing I'll tell that one is
If you are not uh in Japan, the only time you can get tickets to that is a month out for about one hour. Tickets are available and then they sell out and you have gotta do it at like five PM uh Pacific time. And you can you get it in slots. We got eleven AM as our entrance time, but it closes all the same at like five.
We did not when we left we had like ninety minutes left, uh, left the warehouse. We're like, well, there's not that much outdoor, right? And then we realized there are like five things outside, like the Totoro house. We're like running to the Totoro house, like a mile. And then do the Totoro House and then it's like, Okay, we gotta get to Kiki's Village. Get to Kiki's Village. Okay, all right. Well like it really was the uh the
Uh Cartman going through Casabonita really fast and just like Oh wow that's house moving castle Okay. That looks cool. Okay, we gotta see. Uh Whisper of the Heart, I think it's up that hill. I'll do that.
Yeah, Black Fire K.
Yeah.
Uh um you can ru you can ride a real cat bus.
Yes. Yeah, yeah. It's uh yeah, it's as it has fun it has a lot of fun stuff there that's like International to like you can actually get a picture in the cat. Unlike at the Ghibli Museum in Tokyo where it's only kids who get to do it. Finally adults can play on the cat bus.
Yeah we like shell better. Uh it was like satis like very satisfying as a fan of the
Oh, big time, big time. And and they have exclusive uh shorts. They only show there. When Miyazaki dies, they'll probably release them if they're going to be able to do But he wants them only of
Yeah.
Like there's like a fifteen minute sequel to my neighbor Totoro that you can only see.
Seasonal.
I don't hear. Yeah, yeah, it's like there's a dozen short films called uh I think they're just the Ghibli Museum shorts. And they've been only played at Ghibli Museum at at Ghibli Park and occasionally, very rarely at like a film festival internationally they sum But they've never been released on physical media or anything.
So sort of
Yeah.
The red you know, there is a sequel to one of the great animated films that you only could see in in once in a while, maybe at the D V D release uh
Yeah. And and it's right up there, I'd say the the May and the Kitten Bus sequel to Totoro is the equal of Kung Fu Panda 4D.
Yes of course a must be a You must I we're happy we got any time with you uh in person. Right up the hill, seeing Kung Fu Panda exploring over and over.
It's hard to resist. I uh and well and and uh the two other ones I want to mention real quick. I I went to I didn't even know there was like an equivalent of Universal Studios in Kyoto, but it's called it's called uh and by that I mean uh Studio that like you visit.
And it is it's been open since the seventies and it is where they like you get to walk through like here is a village that looks like, you know, eighteen hundreds or seventeen hundreds Japan where they filmed tons of of period And and also tons of cool stuff from um Uh the Tokusatsu shows or the uh the Sentai Power Ranger shows like I filmed there and and Common Writer, uh that that series that it's filmed there.
But the coolest part is that they have I'm a big fan of the anime neon Genesis Evangelion. Okay. And they have a life-size evangelion, but only from the waist up. And it's posed with like its hand out and you can like pose in its hand. And it even has a story of like you've been recruited to be one of the new pilots and here's your passcode and go to the top and sit in the seat and see if you test to be an evangelian pilot.
And basically you just sit in a seat that shakes and it blows air in your face and it says how well you kept your eyes closed or not. I think is how they measure it. But but I passed, I passed and then spent about two hundred dollars on
Wow, is it all exclusive? I assume it's exclusive.
Tons of exclusive stuff. Yes.
Did you account for that? What's not pack light necessarily but like pack uh uh I got space here to come back with a little bit.
We put a suitcase inside a suitcase. Okay.
¶ Japan Merch, Exchange Rates and Park Tips
Yeah. But uh just real quick, merch like in general was what was the best thing you got
Oh boy.
Yeah.
The Nintendo store always has so many. Yeah in it like that are the they have a t-shirt. Oh wait, actually no, not uh they had Cowboy Bebop t shirt I got, which those rarely even get made new ones. They only make'em for elderly anime. But but it came in a case that looks like a VHS case. So it's like, oh, do you remember buying this on VHS? Well we put the t-shirt inside a one-to-one recreation of the VHS.
Do they put dirty Sun Coast movies price? Mm-hmm.
Uh if i no they they take too good a care of their stuff. That's the problem.
That's not the Japan experience. Yeah. That's it, you can bring it home in American.
When they mark down stuff as used, they're like uh we're you know, it's like oh this one's half off because uh there's a little like scratch on the corner of this old of this old magazine. So we we marked it down by half price. We're so sorry. The apologies.
Quite sorrowful.
And and they also have really cool like uh I mean, every every collectible you could possibly want there. And it's easy to r when we were there and I think it's still now. The uh the exchange rate is tantalizingly good for a So when you see something you just move the decimal point over like this is ten thousand yen, that means it's one hundred dollars. But actually ten thousand yen is seven.
Wow. So when you see that I'm like, Oh man, this used to be a hundred dollars. It's only seventy. I I gotta buy it now.
I mean'cause that rate well ready was good. It was good in in twenty nineteen when I went and what a just what a like what a nice like breeze it is throughout your day. But that like not only is everything so clean. But also cheaper than also like your feeling values.
And the Disney park is like sixty dollars a day.
Yes. Even cheaper, like, oh, I'm just going in the evening ticket and
Right.
And you could just take a train directly there. You don't have to be tr stuck in traffic all day in there. And and I I didn't mention the universal one because I heard you guys were confused by the one piece. Fanfest. I'm here. I haven't gone to FanFest. Well mu one of the reason we went to Universal Japan was to see the one piece stage show there. Uh it's an even bigger event there. Like it is a ninety minute stage. Like and they do it once a day. Uh once a day.
is ninety minutes in any theme park for any reason. That's crazy. Whoa.
It's or it's at least an hour. I don't want to overstate it. It's at least an hour long.
The frozen show at California Venture was like Maybe a little over an hour, which only ran for a couple of years. And then Aladdin was like fifty minutes, I think, before that.
And and you have to buy your tickets in advance. Like that too is we got to feel like the smart tourists because we can't we me and my husband constantly were getting to like places like Ghibli Park or the One Piece show.
And seeing other like a lot of Americans turned away who are like, Oh wow, can I get a ticket to this? And they get told like, Well, you had to buy a ticket a month ago. Like if you didn't buy a ticket a month ago you can't you can't go. So meanwhile, me and him get to smugly walk Yeah, we read the instructions online.
They really.
The dastardly guy Jin bought their tickets a month ago and wave it in the others.
Same same with like at the Ghibli Museum. Like there are tons of of people. I have seen more than one couple crying out at the front when they realize like we can't just buy tickets. We came up. Like it's it's our I I I was joking about mocking them, but I d I do feel bad for people who just assume it works like a museum where you show up and buy a ticket to go in.
Everything is recorded.
You cannot assume.
Everything. Anything you can't assume anything. That's about everything.
Well uh my husband is the to use uh podcaster ride terminology, my husband is the master checker. Uh and so that that deal
Alpha checker.
Alpha check. Sorry, yes.
Yeah.
And and that trained us to be ready for how almost everything in Japan is like reservation a month ahead.
Yeah.
¶ One Piece Live Show and Fan Depth
That show is one piece from your show is is eighty minutes is what I'm saying.
Pretty close.
Which is twenty minutes longer than Propeller One Way Night Coach Part One, the pre Scott Gardiner uh
Yeah.
It is a 60-minute film that is apparently coming out in the theater.
¡It is coming on theater!
I don't know. Maybe I'm reading
I think people are saying that it's not coming out of theaters because it's only a lot of people.
Well it should be. Well mine will be. I'm gonna get that in the deal.
About as long as like a straight to VHS Disney sequel in the nineties.
Well I want bloopers. I want like Music videos over the credits. I mean that's the Travolta staple that you want.
Yeah.
For sure. John's nice. You'll like him.
The uh the One Piece show in Japan, it's been it was neat to go to it for the first time last year'cause I I'd always heard like their you know, it was only made It's done in Osakats for a Japanese audience. Like they don't they didn't expect it to be internationally successful cause
It's a super fan show full of tons of fan service that even me, a person who's read every chapter of the one piece comic, I was constantly like, Wait, that obscure character, I think I remember him. Like I needed a wiki out to remember all
You don't remember at all twelve hundred
I know it's and and in multiple chapters, like this is how many characters are in one piece.
Bye.
Uh you think in like like Dragon Ball like oh one new guy showed up and let's learn his name. But most people are crews on a ship, so if a major character shows up, he's on a Sh he's on a you know, his his pirate ship with twelve other people who are all named characters who have their own defined powers, and so it's like hundreds of characters. It's so dense.
Give me an example um of a character in the show and use like a comparison, like say Batman, of like the type of obscure character you're talking about where it's like you gotta be this deep in
Okay.
Is it even possible?
Yeah, I can well I I see this is why I I I thread the needle between MongaFan and Con and Manga. Uh so yeah I mean in the Batman world like there's so there's this character called Bartolomeo in One Piece. Who's like he's Luffy's biggest fan and he seems like he's a cool guy, but he's actually an annoying fanboy. And he's a really funny character who showed up like 17 years in. And I'd I'd compare him to like the I'd say he's the KGB. Or like the the bane.
Pretty much
Thank you.
You know, Bane's too big, he's been in stuff. Okay, I'll stick with KG Beast. Like a nineties produced a guy like a little bit into the series who just shows up to be like, Oh, that guy's funny. I like this.
But it's like in uh if you were seeing a Batman stunt show at six flags and like Condiment King showed up. Very obscure.
Buggy is you know, I wouldn't call Buggy the clown guy who I think you did get in your show, right? A guy with a big red clown nose.
Yes, we got him.
Yeah. Buggy I would say is uh He's above Konami King. I'd say he's the killer croc, but like uh Batman the animated series killer croc.
Or it's like if Batman's done show now and they're they're like, Hey look, it's Knox from Batman One the Robert Wool character. Knox, he's back.
Yeah.
He fell off of a high place into the water.
Yeah.
I didn't know Knox was gonna be in there.
One second thought about what that character's name is. I mean'cause he'cause at this point he walks in and you're like, Oh, Arlus, that's right.
Carless.
Swain knows Arlis.
Bob the henchman per
Bob, yeah of course. Bob, I yeah, I feel like people remember Bob.
He had a toy. Of course. Oh, and the funny thing though is that the one piece show is that they've now realized like They have a lot of international fans who show up for it. Like we were hardly the only Americans or or non-Japanese people in the audience. People come from like, you know, Europe and Australia too. Uh but so uh in a ton I think actually the most people who come to Japan uh from any country are Korea.
At least that's what I read when we went there. But so they have a character. They've made up a brand new character who's like a park exclusive character who stands next to a major character. So every time a major character says something in Japanese, that's a plot point. Then this guy, this new character standing next to him, goes like, What? Luffy got kidnapped? Is that what you're saying?
And just to expla he says it in English, so everybody else there you if you don't know Japanese but you can speak English, you can follow the story a little bit. It's it's it's like ten percent English.
Yeah.
Very good.
Right.
Similar to Netflix say uh just saying How every episode of Stranger Things had people stop to say, All right, explain the plan again.
Yeah.
Is that right, really? Okay, so one more time.
We're doing.
Plan doesn't mean anything. You've explained it so many times I can't even parse it.
Mm-hmm. Is there a big highlight stunt in that show?
Uh they definitely they repurposed you know, there's not the train thing, but they uh or sorry, the the plane thing that they didn't repurpose that from from Waterworld.
Water roll.
Yes, yeah. They they basically repurpose all the water world stuff. But the best stuff is one of my favorites is uh Jim Bay, who's one of the core members of the uh Luffy's pirate crew. He's a fish man who has water power.
And so he has like a super punch that in the comics and the cartoon makes like a tidal wave of water explode and when he hits somebody with his super punch the staged punch, then that's when there's a big splash of water that like it's like a it gets way into the splash zone at at Water World in the Water World stage, which is it's the it is a copy of the stage of Waterworld in
That's pretty cool.
Yeah, we were talking. It seems so mad. Oh yeah. Like lines out the door for the arena, the the limited time food and stuff. J like a restaurant that can't handle that.
I I think Universal underestimates how thirsty American uh anime fans are. the stuff that happens. If you're a One Piece fan, which I am a recent like I've only been into it for like two years now, but my friend I have friends who are super hardcore, they always heard about the cool shit that's in Universal Osaka and could never get it here. And so now that it's happening here, like it
It's it's this weird mix, like I saw it last year too, of like the huge lines for one piece at FanFest. While meanwhile, like poor Star Trek is It felt uh underattended. Right. And I think they didn't understand like how much the anime fans are the are harder core than even than most media.
Don't they want some old guys age forty to seventy coming into the park more? They need more Star Trek, not less. They want young people coming to see fun, cool hip things.
Come on.
Bye.
Uh I'm so sad Quirks bar. You know, right?
Was it was incredible. Let me tell you. So there was a there was a photo of Cork and That is all. We can talk about something else now.

Sure.
Probably an intense
Yeah, crazy. But we don't show love to universal classics. There's a line at the door for One Piece stuff and for Sailor Moon. And meanwhile, we don't even appreciate a Transformers supply vault.

It was uh we did one week in Osaka and one week in Kyoto. Yeah. And on top of seeing other like, you know, uh actual cultural things, uh but we we were it almost felt like we were like, well, this cultural stuff's nice, but don't you want to be shopping or going to a place themed afternoon?
Gotta keep a keep a healthy like history trick. Or nature trash. Whatever you prefer.
I I would tell people like yeah, if you uh there there are fun things off the beaten path to do. If you like Japanese media, uh they're uh not just are like uh a theme park fan and you like certain anime or video games, there are tons of theme things to do. I I even missed out Evangelion just opened up a new forty film at uh at another theme park the other uh No, it's called the eight it's an eight K film.
Thank you.
So Evangelion eight It's in another Similar park that used to be like it was sold in the seventies this park as it's Europe in Japan. It's like walk European style streets. It's you're like in France, but you're in Japan. Like that was its old way of selling itself. And now it's like they built an eight K theater in there and it's like Watch Avangelli and do this and and leave. Don't care about going to fake Europe in in Japan.
Yeah. Interesting.
Yeah.
Yeah. Get in the evil. Get in the eva.
Uh when I did the VR Evangelion game, they did say that actually. And then he congratulated us that we we We played a twenty dollar VR Ava game three times until we finally won.

I'm not sure. Opinions you have something in your brain about Jimmy Neutron's.
Well, when I was uh throwing out uh things to to Mike and you guys uh number one, I am a Spider-Man fan, but you guys have covered every Spider Man thing.
Yeah, is there a way to end or like focus? But yeah, there's you know we did our we did our pressure.

very appreciative of that. That was that was any animated series. And we qualified.
And and I I was a Nicktoon kid, like I loved the Nicktoon so much, but then like this ride actually does represent to me like when I realized I had aged out of the Nicktoon zone and of Jimmy Neutron. I am not a pro I'm sorry to slightly younger millennial listeners here who love Jimmy Neutron and I respect your love for him and all the references you do to Jimmy Neutron. And how hot you think Jimmy Neutron's mom is and all that stuff.
Is that she is she like an icon for a certain section of perverts out there?
I'm just gonna do it.
He's never seen her, but he's coming to her defense.
I I just base this on memes I have seen that put her on the level of like Dexter's mom from Dexter's laboratory. In that similar zone.
I'm looking at hm I don't know. Well th when you Google it Claim that uh she looks like uh Lana Del Rey.

Um yeah, I would jump back and forth. I was a big Invader Zim fan, but that was Uh, that was like trying to catch Futurama during football season. Like it was alwa invaders in moved around so much, it was so hard to find.
I g I I was trying to know um trying to thought.

But uh yeah, Jimmy Neutron I liked okay, uh but I mentioned it to J. it to my wife and she said I love Jimmy New And so she's a few years younger and and she um I said, Oh, is that why you married me? Haha very quickly went, Uh no, you're Carl. I'm Jimmy Neutron, if anything. I'm the I'm the star. You're Carl Weezer.
Yeah.
Great. Okay.
You just literally I don't know the characters well.
Is that a neurotic character?
He's the nerdy fr he's the guy who's nerdier than Jimmy Neutron boy genius.
Who's an inventor, but I think that's a good one.
He's the Rob Paulson nerd in the ride.
Boy, uh
I think of later Nick Toons, yeah, Invader Zim, uh, Angry Beavers, and Hey Arnold.
I just feel like I mean you're a year younger than me, but I do feel like you win an extra five years in Nick.
Where's this coming from?
Because he was a fairly odd parent watching.
Yeah, it really liked fairly.
I just always feel like there's like a couple extra years of like I was totally out at that point.
Wait, oh, I just loved cable. I just loved cable TV.
Oh, I just love it.

Oh yeah.
No, no yeah, I I would check in at the time Jimmy Neutron debuted in well it was a movie first, but then T V show in t t uh oh two. Like I was nine I was between eighteen and twenty when when it debuted. I would still watch uh SpongeBob on there and same with uh and I I would watch some fairly odd parents, but
Bye.
Mostly I was watching more adult cartoons then or car or Cartoon Network stuff, which also is usually point.
¶ Jimmy Neutron: Movie, TV, and CGI Constraints
It was I was eighteen when it came out in in O one ahead of a certain day. Well all Um
At least a Benfold's rock in the suburbs.
Uh but but yes, uh th when it first came out I was like I finally realized like, oh, Nickelodeon wants me to like this. This is being advertised to me too aggressively. Like f it was the first time where the advertising, which they do for everything and they want you to watch everything. But this was the first time where I had the knee-jerk reaction of you want me to like this too much. No, I don't like this.
No, this is the first time you were that you rebelled against That you wrote
Well because they write.
I don't have to I don't have to do what you want, Nick Toons.
Yeah, this kind of rollout that like Dreamworks would start doing a few years later where they're like, Well Why wait to see if the movie is successful to then make a TV show? We make the movie and the TV show concurrently. So like the the movie comes out in theaters like Summer O one and is an Oscar dominated movie. It it lost to Shrek at the Oscars. The first this
Having never watched any Jimmy Neutron, one of my only core memories, but being a a big author.
I definitely
The very first animated category in which they cut to a tuxedoed version of Mike and Sully and then Shrek and Donkey, who won, right? Yep. And then uh and then Jimmy Neutron. And then them being like then these characters I don't know I don't know if it was Jimmy and the the
It's Jimmy Goddard. I've I've seen like Goddard has like a sign up that says like vote for us or something.
Okay.
Yeah.
But I did look, I always like that. I love if we're cutting to animated characters in the Oscars theater, I'm smiling. So he was at least part of a thing that I enjoyed.
And and then the T V show rolled out less than a year later, like they did it was like a money saving thing in a way. Which was smart. They build all the character models for the movie and then now you basically have, you know, models you can puppet on a TV show. You don't have to put the work into spending the money on producing the models. You just now do them on a cheaper T V show with less animation. Uh.
I don't know where the cost savings come into fit, but it's like it's sort of like less
Yeah, it also was like yeah, it was not done in H D like for the movies. And then also they they get rid of the expensive people like Patrick Stewart and Martin Short and you recast them with just regular TV voice acts.
Oh, they're in the movie?
They're in the movie. I didn't know that until I was looking up like Who was Oblar in the movie again and like oh Oblar the one of the enemies in the the ride is Martin Short in the movie and even for the ride they couldn't spend the
I...
He's like one of the most
Oh maybe he's has an exclusivity thing and he can only be on the
Oh yeah. Oh maybe. They they did an overall with him in in nineteen eighty nine. Uh um what you described as the same I recall this same Format extra. Yes. And this was also both shows uh from the mind of
Oh, Kung Pao.
Yeah, yeah.
So so ma so Barnyard maybe following in the model of let's do movie and show concurrently
Yeah, really?
The elements.
Okay, yeah, sure, sure. That's it it saved money on some level for them. Yeah, sure. But even though then I get that it shows off like, oh, you don't y seeing CGI cartoon on T V in two thousand two is very novel. Like there's very little It seems fantastic. It locks him in too much they can barely do anything. 'cause they can't like they can't build a new you know, in a two D show, obviously it costs money all the time to design a new character and cast some money. But
Bye.
It is exponentially more expensive if you want a fully new character or at least back then, if you wanted a fully new character model to show up on Jimmy Neutron, that was way more expensive than one new character in an episode.
And did did they then default to like I again, I don't know the show at all. Yeah. Would they kind of try to default to like, all right, we need to go to a new place. Can that just be kind of a swirly b b bat like a kind of a mucky sky background? We'll change the color to like an orange tint instead of green.
Screensaver.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Or just like yeah, that's the atmosphere quote unquote. And then but it's like a it's from Winamp and then the and then just like, Well, we got rocks, right? They're on a rock.
This was probably partly the impetus of why Shrek and Donkey show up. Models exist. We've got the models, we've got the elements.
Yeah.
Oh man. See and to only make six episodes of Father of Pride like and d to waste those models like unless they better have reused those guys on like Madagascar or something to have getting their money back.
Yeah, yeah.
Man spl I don't want to tiger splain to you, but the the I th weren't there like
There were more than six.
Yeah.
There's a shocking.

I I believe after you guys put that out, me and me and my co-host Bob both listened to it and were like, good. Okay, we both swear we never have to cover this on our podcast.
We find it.
They did it. And we don't need to
¶ Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast: Ride Details
Oh we wouldn't want to step on Pakistan's territory. That's the only reason we cannot watch hours of uh um I guess here, you know what we have not said is is where and when the This ride opened in 2003. This is in Universal Studios Hollywood, Maine Park. It is sort of the middle round.
Right.
Slot that before it was taken up by Fantastic World of Hanna Barbera, and after it became despicable. Um so and and that's like a you know, early on you're entering the park, kind of the main drive where things still look like sound stages.
Production.
Central, of course, yes. And it's so it's like, you know, opening day structure that has sort of only changed a little bit. That's like three ride films, but the overall idea has stayed the same and the way the pre-show. moves into the main theater. And probably the thing to say about it format wise is that it's a simulator, but all of the attractions in that space have been a simulator where you're it's a big screen, but you're on all these kind of like mini benches.
That all that all move around and the characters are playing to you, but then also there's like fifty Uh um w so it which I've always found I'm I'm very mixed here. I I I don't know that any of these attractions are my favorite and it's sorta I get it, it's like a fish. auditorium, you can move people in and out quickly, but boy does it not feel the same as star tours where you're in a little box and any and if aga and care and Rex and C three people are talking to you.
little like but what about all these other people? This is
Same of like uh Back to the Future versus this and say and and this carries over to like the Minions Ride and and the before the Fantastic Hanna Barbera of like In I was re-watching uh the Hanabar Bear one this morning too, and like format wise it's the same too of like you're in just like a small car that's like well no, just your bench is being driven around by Yogi Bear in in that one. And the same deal it is.
My bench?
But but yeah, you're right. You're looking all around. I I think on Despicable Me, do they define it as like everybody in this arena is turned into a me?
Well, eventually that's a good idea.
Stay out and and acknowledge that it's a big group a little more than trying to make it your experience. Now I've softened on this area, or at least on But I would I would put all three of these maybe in the same category. I don't know, like kid. A little bit. Like not my favorite simulators, but as as will happen, recent experiences with my son have made me more amenable to despicable memory.
Really took to this ride, and it's a good introductory, full family ride that is a little thrilling. It gears up and you go, whoa, but then nothing. Crazy happens. So if you're a little bit of a skip It's a way to ease you into a the thrilling situation.
It's still a forty inch height requirement though. So as much as I go, oh, I'll take my like two year old up to that little movie or whatever, you still kind of have to be tall you have to be the same height as you would have to be on Big Thunder or Space Mountain.
So I'm like, as much as I'm like, yeah, it's like a kid that I mean, obviously you if you're a tall three year old, so like you can ride it, like my daughter. But like still, I'm like, that's still there's a height requirement on this. Kind it's kind of weird. If it's you want it to just be like a kid.
¶ Hanna-Barbera Legacy and Nickelodeon's Shift
Yeah, you're right,'cause it's a it yeah. But the ideal audience member for a lot of
For some reason, yeah. It's like the right.
But there used to be I don't know if it's still there, the first like there was some carpeted stair riser kind of things at the front of the And you could sit if you wanna sit if you didn't want to.
Okay, yes. I think went and like for France.
Yeah, I and I have such an affection for Hanna Barbera because of the the Fantastic World because that was like nine it was ninety-one or ninety-two. I bet I could find out if it was like Seaquest was in its second. They talked about it on our draw on our tour, so maybe I could see pinpoint where that production was. But uh like I was I was I've gotten better at not being scared on rides, though I still have a upper limit, but I was really scared of the back
And then the Fantastic World was at the level I could really enjoy. And I I also liked at the end of it it's like, Oh, this is how they make cartoons. I'll do voiceover stuff. it. So I then when I heard it got replaced by by a Jimmy Neutron thing, this thing that already was I felt
Down my throat, my Nickelodeon. I was even more mad of like, it also is just proof that like Hannibal Bear characters, no kid, no, if they're not Scooby-Doo or Fruity Pebbles uh mascots, no child knows a Hannibal Bear character.
Yo Yogi and Jetsons have not really I think d I but even though I'm positive that they're at all times At least three attempts to reboot both. And like right there must be a little bit more than a little bit.
Like in development.
Ever since nineteen ninety there's bit like they make sure that at least Three over qualified writers or
I definitely
Do a new Jetsons.
Yeah, that's it.
For sure.
Yogi B.
Someone in this town there's an executive in this town screaming Get me the fucking McGillagorilla screenwriter on the phone.
NOW!
I've I've heard uh on stage in public It's not like an off the record thing. I've heard like Dana Gould like talk about how he had like the best Jetsons pitch and how he's like, ah, this one Cartoon Network executive didn't get it. And he was uh and he just started complaining about how he ruined his Jetsons.
Yeah. To try to get is good.
Yeah.
Of course. Terrible talking about Hanna Barbera like this the week after Teddy Billy.
Oh yeah, that's true. Ted Turner.
Yeah. Big Ted.
Oh great.
Geez.
Copyright on that and you'll be Teddy Billion.
Mm. Uh turn of classic movies, uh Cartoon Network, TNT, TBS. He loved cable television as well.
I guess.
Yeah.
That's what he was playing to the Jason Sheridan out there.
You do what you
You want. And he had multiple girlfriends toward the end of his life. He had a whole group going.
Good for him.
How about that? Just like you like that.
I think I'd be aw uh feel awfully inconsiderate if that was the case.
No. I just read an essay.
I I grew up uh I I grew up uh v from ages eight to ten in an Atlanta, Georgia suburb where like everybody seemed like they worked for a w a turner entity. So I have mixed in with all my other childhood nostalgia is like to turn so when he died I was like
Man, they don't make good billionaires like him anymore and then somebody was like, Well, you know, cable news at le at the very least that ruined the world and I was like Yeah, that's a real thing. Yeah, I guess you're right. Yeah, but okay, but sure, fine. But He liked the Atlanta Braves and he bought'em. It was just fun.
He was having fun.
It is. You you don't get mixed bag billionaires anyway. You get all you get one w there's one type of thing in the bag. Yeah. It's all world destroyed.
¶ Jimmy Neutron Ride's Nicktoon Universe
No, it's like uh l small uh lizards in Southern California, all billionaires now. You go like, Oh shit, a gun in the house
Yeah.
Uh
Alright, let's round it up.
Will anyone ever be saying like, But you know, but also Zuckerberg invented poking?
Oh pokey.
Remember we all were like, What do we do with it? And then I did one for you, even though you're my guy friend and but then I did it for a girl I wanna I we it was up to us to decide what poking was.
Rest in peace, Marky Billions.
Yeah.
Well here I won't.
Say more.
I didn't finish the sentence.
Jeremy Neutron up.
Uh so Jimmy Neutron. Uh uh Yeah, so so this ride it comes it there's that determination I guess that these character that people don't Going by the waist. And maybe that they don't people are sick of watching the pre show with Hannah and Barbera themselves.
Not us.
Break. Yes, I know.
It maybe was keeping them alive because I think both of them didn't die until after the pre show went away in O two. Like it they n they they lived such a long time and died in like the aw in the mid aught. Yeah. Portrait of Doreen Gray kind of the
No, no, once the last T V was unplugged. Oh yes, they're all yeah. Uh um but they Meanwhile there's been the desire and the deal to do a Nicktoon attraction and Jimmy Neutron emerges as the new thing that they're trying to push. They've already that they're we're all in on this, it's movie, it's show at the same time. And is he not the best conduit? Look he's three.
already you know and we and they look in as much as the the kind of the melding of formats is a little odd in this it's also how they did Fantastic World of Phantom Barbera too they sort of had to put 2D animation I bet that was some of the calculus. Yeah. He's in a three D rocket. I mean he
It it makes yeah, I think it does make sense in that regard too. It's not just that they were all in on Jimmy Neutron Like the coolest new ca kid everybody's gonna love. But I I think yeah, he works as a host in that way from up like it's it feels like it's always about budget though with Jimmy Neutron.
It did save him money like every time. Like same with this, but like in the show are two things that were way bigger than him that should have like hosted the show and like That's re It's so invert it's so inverted.
That's a s yes, that's a strange I mean, I don't think there's any reason to like go so in order or spoil or whatever, because it is like I think what people I got to follow Jimmy Neutron and Carl and Who's the Dog? Uh Yeah, yeah. Uh uh I got and I got to see Oblar. Oblar, the brother of King Goobot. Yes. I got to s I love seeing Oblar. It's probably less that I'm more like, oh, this is the ride that takes you through the different Nicktoons. And the the primary of those being
Rugrats, Fairly Odd Parents. Then you're kind of in Jimmy Neutron world for a little bit. And then SpongeBob. And when you're watching it. Me not having I think I went on it once. I I don't I didn't have this memory In and you're like, Oh my god, SpongeBob? Yeah. Why'd they save him? Why isn't this the SpongeBob ride?
Yeah.
Yeah, I uh the only one you miss they they fly it is it counts as a zone. They fly through it pretty quick, but the Hey Arnold street, they go through that.
Right. That's a yeah yeah. Well I guess that context is that the y you are it is Set at Nicktoon Studios. They do a confusing amount of is it studio or are you in their world? So you're going in and out of different sound stages. Just classic old school
And
That's probably the most successful part of that. It becomes a way for them to quickly pay lip service to Rocco's modern life via a sign as you pass by it.
For like a third of a second you can see Randon Stimpy in there. Like I I score. Paused like it's it they're right next to the Rocco's Modern Life building and the cat dog building. They're just two guys walking by. The the only one you're not gonna see in there is Doug because he got bought by Disney. So
Right.
Yeah, he's li yeah, he's up the freeway. Doug is dead to them though.
Yeah.
They uh They fly over the Rocket Power kids at one point and I'm like, Get outta here, Rocket Power No
There was a time there were like five classy chupo shows on Nickelodeon. They sold that many. Like they had they had uh Rugrats, Rugrats all growed up, as told by Ginger, Rocket Power and the Wild Thornberries, all at once. They sold that many shows to like
Aesthetically these get
Yeah.
Ginger with the I know it's supposed to be like a preteen girl who was like, Oh, she's wearing makeup for the first but Ginger always freaked me. She always frightened me.
See, that's why they can only show her for like a third of a second. You can only you can only really take the aesthetic of Classky Chupo when it's babies with giant.
Yes.
Yeah.
Only way it works.
Uh
Also they weren't all grown up. That's bullshit. They weren't adults.
No, they were just staged up to tweens for the perfect tween market.
Did you watch that show?
No, I didn't like it.
Oh so you tried it and you
Fuck that pickles boy, Dill. I ain't going in on that. Get out of here. I'm not a deal guy at all.
That is like another millennial divide I've seen. If like oh when Dilf came into the show it's really that's the jump the shark moment.
We finally have another one. We're Razzle Dazzle Jason. We're showing we're seeing cracks. He is he has come out against Adrian Brody and against Dil. Not the
Rocket power free.
I like it.
I can hear it.
Like safe and comforting like Pepper Ann or the reason.
Then you watch Recess?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah. Reasonable.
That is the tween attitude of Dill Pickles.
Recess was super solid when Doug Rugrad Sure. That was so exciting in like ninety one. The only issue was they aired on Sunday morning. But if like we had to go to church, I'm like my missing the nick
Yeah, I was happily a godless family who got to watch it on Sunday mornings. And my my mom was the biggest fan of Ren and Stimpy too. Like she was happy to buy us the toys'cause Ren and Stimpy was like calling back to the cartoons of her childhood of like they were parroting like the Hanna Barbera serial cartoons.
Yeah. My dad loves
But after that.
Right.
After the church.
This is the Lord's.
Oh right, the Snick era.
Oh right.
You got Clarissa and Roundhouse, Renan Stimpy, and are you afraid of it?
Yeah, I was I was right with you on this. Yeah.
That's where that's where yeah. That's an era in which SNCC was the only Saturday night plans.
Yeah.
Right.
And if you did the Nickelodeon Studio Story you got to see the
I'm jealous that I never got to be.
Saw the orange case.
Yeah, I'm jealous of you.
No, yeah, I got to I they weren't doing any games that day when we went to the uh studio tour of it, but we did we got to see the all the lights on of the Legend of the Hidden Temple set. It was all set up for filming.
Right.
I swear I had a classmate who bragged that they were like one of the she was on an episode Legend of the History. the first round, but uh she swore by any
Oh yeah.
My Farron and I have described like Am I making this up that like somebody a kid said they were on it and she was like, I don't believe you
Perfect.
It's so unattainable. That can't be true. But in the case of Legends of the Hidden Temple, it's such those are You know, like the the pawns and the chess skate. They like they they get eliminated so fast. That first group.
Yeah, they they need like what, four teams of force, that's like sixteen kids per taping.
They're not going to be able to do that get wiped out uh that that first wall. Uh you d you don't know their names, you don't find out jack shit about them.
Uh yeah, I to bring it to my work too of The Simpsons, like do you know the incestuous world of Hey Arnold and the Simpsons?
Craig Bartlett is related to Matt Graning.
He he was married to Lisa Groening for for thirty years. He was so when Craig Bartlett's uh was an accomplished cartoonist on his own, but I do wonder if that opened some doors for him a little. He some of his first stuff uh his comics, Hey Arnold comics were published in Simpsons Illustrated magazine.
Oh sure.
And when did the Classic Chupo Simpsons?
Oh man. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, so I'm so excited to explain all this, but also. But uh when the short started there were so few places they could go to and uh for the production in the time frame they needed and Classic Chupo was their top option as a very to do like just, you know, ninety seconds of of animation. They decided to then once they got the show, they're like, okay, it'll still be Classky Chupo. That'll be our an overseas uh it will be ACOM.
But here'll be Classky Chupo. And day one, like the first episode back, they signed a three-year deal. And the first episode back, James L. Brooks like got like hated it. And the reanimated sixty percent of it demanded it and like made Clasky Chupo pay for it and got into a fight with Gabor Chupo, like a shouting match that made everybody uncomfortable. famous of like because it was the start of James L. Brooks said, No, you don't you do exactly what we say.
Thank you.
He felt the animators took too many liberties. The deal continued for the three years, but when the third season was up, fourth season they went to uh Film Roman, the the Garfield folks, and they were at Film Roman until that got bought by stars and now they've been Fox. At the same studio as Bob's Burger.
Yeah.
Yes. There's a version of that that's a nightmare.
You can find it on the D V D, uh the of like seven minutes are on there and they watch it in two thousand one. They record a new commentary with with a lot of the guys. Yeah. And James L. Brooks like leaves three minutes in because he's so angry again remembering it come back and saying like this is shit like that's how they quote him saying it when he looked at it was like this is shit.
They're all shouting. They're all so mad. It's oh that's a great that's a good
I love that they share that kind of like thing. Uh that's that's what we lose when we lose D V D extras.
Absolutely. I love as I could. Those are the same things to me. It was had a big impact on me. It's uh it's bullshit. We don't uh I guess that's why you have to like collect them. It's like podcasts have to become audio commentaries, I guess. Uh
I I think too the Rugrats Rugrats I think was this idea Of like a person said this, but I do think that like Rugrats was a sticking point with them that like Rugrats for for Simpsons. Because Rugrats partially got sold to Nick to Viacom on hey, no, we're the Simpsons guys. We animate the Simpsons, and this is like the next thing from the Simpsons guys. And this is kind of like the Simpsons.
thing like they so they sold Rugrats on the Simpsons name, which then the Gracie studio folks were like, hey, you can't you're selling I think they did have a feeling of like you're selling yourselves as the Simpsons guy. When we don't like that. And I think that that is my personal theory. I think
We we do everything you love about the Simpsons, the crazy, mismatchy, surreal, disgusting character design.
Did I mention that the people who w run the Simpsons don't like us? So I mean
Yeah.
Don't you want to work with us now?
¶ Blending Nicktoons: Ride Canon and Studio Logic
Well so this is this becomes a fascinating piece I get regardless of if you like the quality of the ride. It is interesting that it does have to blend all of these disparate Nicktoons worlds together and that you end up with like Um I'm jumping around. Scream it we will go back to the things of the pre show. But you end up basically you're on And uh in which you end up, you know, you grab you go through the Rugrats house. I was gonna say their house, but they
There's a party with a reptile bounty house in the back.
I like that. I like the Reptar bounce stuff.
Yeah I like it.
I like that.
Be interrupted dance as well.
Yeah.
Yeah. Like you're about to hit her and got her picked. Yelling at you. It also follows like Rugrat's canon that none of the babies talk to you because you're not a baby.
Right.
Right.
Oh that's why that's all right, I appreciate that. Angelica does the talking because she Okay, that that I like. Um now there's still other bizarre things. We're going to Nicktoon Studios. So you go into yes, you go into a rug. But before that, you go into the sound stage in which Rugrats is filmed. However, you don't see the backs of any sets or any lights or anything. You see a full immersive world, implying that
All of the cartoons are characters living their lives in a uh in a bubble, in a Truman show. The Rugrats are in a Truman show, as are the Fairly Odd Parents, as is Bikini Bon of they're all like ecosystems within square sound state.
You know, I did like the Jimmy Neutron as he's explain in the in the pre-show video says, and here's where they f and right at sea level is where they film SpongeBob to let you know like, oh, it's un that's how it's underwater. He points on the map he points it like a puddle on the ground or well, you know, a w a
Right. You're on a studio lot but then once you're in the worlds there's no Like they're in a zoo. It's a zoo. All the characters live in a zoo. And we've recreated the desert and here's the aquarium part.
But a lot of the other NickTunes are just walking around the streets between the sound stages and like
They're unhappy.
Yeah. Taking a walk at the Say a walk in between works uh filming.
Well that's a g you know what you raise a good point. It's not like you're stuck in the the you're the world you're in. There's probably like a commissary. go to when they're off w when they're not filming the show. But then what of the underwater SpongeBob Go join the rest.
Yeah, just try it.
But are they going dry?
But Cosmo and Wanda do have powers and they come into play a lot in the finale.
Well that isn't that weird too that like the to speak like oh it It's a different studio. But then when they crash through the wall for our fairly odd parents, then they're also teleported to Fairy World. It's like n this this is mixing things here. Like either they're teleported to Fairy World or Fairy World is a place Within the set of the fairly odd parents like studio stage.
Yeah, they do a full
Yeah, wait.
It's like leftover Universal Studio like mandate, I'm assuming, where it's like has to have a sound stage. Cause why not why not just have it be like Nick Land? And there's just different cities in Nickland.
I guess they were still stuck with the exterior of the building is like a back lot thing, so they're like, Well, this is what a
¶ Jimmy Neutron's Ride: Its Context and Legacy
But then he set up all right, so Jimmy Neutron set up his his new lab.
Sure, we're going into his lab and then we go blast off into Nick's.
Yeah, just teleport. I don't. And same and too with like uh well a downside of it is they I think they planned it of like, oh, this is right next to like I swear on the map it was right next to Nick Studios. So that's why it's like this is Nicktoon Studios. Right next to Nickelodeon Studios. And then Nickelodeon Studios is closed in like two or three years after they open the ride of Jimmy Neutron's Nick Team Blast. So the tie-in they have there is just dead immediately.
Right, right as Jimmy Neutron is probably also airing less and less on Nickelodeon as well in
This show's not on maybe progress isn't on by that point. Like I guess there's kind of a culture. But it it this got out of
Yeah. I w I would think Fred Flintstone is laughing at them, like, Oh, who's out at eight now? Jimmy Neutron.
Also like this ride is open and then Shrek four D is
Yeah. Not my favorite era of
Park.
Or animation.
I think I'm just saying a larger cultural footprint than Jimmy.
Oh, yes.
No, but it did occur to me that like in the same year. Yeah. Shrek goes into
Alfred Ish.
Yeah.
Yeah, this is tough. This is this is this like I don't know. Universus Florida Mach two I think is bested by Mach.
Oh and King Kong must be going away around the same time. Did it make it to like I can't remember?
The second generation they were they were growing. And and and didn't you also have like what did uh Mercy Rare goes away for Hercules?
Yes.
It's second generation weird.
It's across the idea.
And uh it the Jimmy Neutron ride, it it is funny that ends up it always ends up being a chase, like the Panna Barbera one was chasing somebody, the minions is chasing somebody, Back to the Future and Jimmy.
Jimmy Fallon.
Jimmy Fallon, yeah, it's always it's it's usually a chase.
Fallen boy genius.
Yeah, he's the right.
Yeah.
It's Yeah, this this stretch of Universal is where you go on simulators Based on TV shows starring a Jimmy whose popularity is decreasing gradually.
True.
Once the show has once the ride has been built.
Full of things that are instantly dated that aren't on T V anymore.
That's true too.
Yeah. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Maybe you know the show, but the bit within the show sorry you're lost. What's Ooblar? What's hashtag?
The the m y like I had to look up like, okay, wait, Jimmy Neutron chicken dance. It's like, no, that's a callback from the big scene in the movie where everybody does the chicken dance.
Oh.
Like yeah.
That's the this is a kind of a f a false ending to the ride is that it seems like that's a good idea. Resolved, but then the villain shows up one more time, and then your your vehicle is my memory. What what is the the narrative purpose of the chicken dance?
Uh that he is making you dance. Oh yeah, you're the vehicle. You know what? I'll give him credit that I think that was clever. That that's like, oh, if you love the chicken dance scene in the movie, now the King Gooblar will make you chicken dance. So I think your your seat moves a lot.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
I was a judge easy. I I think I was there in two thousand three. I think I was there within the first year So I'm like a I'm a judge I'm a judgy college student. I'm not a c I'm not the ideal Uh and I'm all pissed. Universal Studios. What am I doing? But I and just harshly judging I I did not I was no fan of the uh of that part.
Well then Llama's appearing too like this is all it's it's a lot of rando humor.
It's just not sequiterous, yeah. There is a psychag, the Dalai Lama appears for split seconds. In the llamas sequence.
For the parents, right? Yeah.
Yeah, from America.
Yeah.
¶ SpongeBob's Dominance and Theme Park Expansion
Well Cosmo and Wanda they were the ones I thought were I liked that they were the flattest and they don't like Some of the other characters, like, they can move in three D better. It looks like they like drew over a three D model, but Cosmo and Wanda are just completely flat like JPEGs floating up and down next to the
Yeah, they're like yeah, I thought that too. Like the up and down maybe that will disguise that they are not there's no planal movement going on whatsoever.
But the biggest on rewatch, the biggest laugh I had was in the Spongebob ones. Like I felt Spongebob was having the most fun. He's like, Hey Mrs. Puff, hey secondary characters. Like that that was that gave me a chunk. Yeah.
But but you do feel like The star. What are we doing? We give this attraction. What a breath of fresh air he is. What a great voice he has. Uh dynamic, as opposed to, granted, he doesn't have to do any extra. But like he really he steals the show in the brief I feel like you're only in SpongeBob World for thirty seconds or something.
Then you're flushed out again. Yeah, it's like that I mean that Just trying to remember like was oh was Yeah, in oh eight there was a SpongeBob SquarePants four. the thing like Paramount Parks.
Let's go. Yes there is.
Circuit circuit.
I didn't know that
So yes, between all of these things, because we've talked about we've never done an episode about Spongebob SquarePants 4D. But it may maybe it's merited at some point because it's one of the it's the most just like kicked around available theme park attraction ever. I was on a Wikipedia that didn't even say the number of places where it is available. It's like it is like impossible.
Disappoint because Spongebob is just licensed to so many things and uh uh uh and that that attraction. Just I don't know. They I guess they're easy to reproduce. But it got me thinking about SpongeBob attractions. I had one question: Is Jimmy Neutron is Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast the first Spongebob? And technically the answer is no, because two weeks prior, uh Great America in Norcal opened something called SpongeBob's boat.
Just like kids ride literally two weeks before. So we're this is precisely the month in which Spongebob is finally entering theme parks full force. Uh one month later, Spongebob SquarePants four. First time wherever that first opened. Right. Um, but it so big time for SpongeBob and theme parks. But it got me thinking. If you want to make a guess, how many separate SpongeBob attracts?
have ever been created in the world of theme parks. And I'm not saying uh the multiple SpongeBob four Ds don't count as I'm saying like that's w that's one, right? Okay So so t concepts
I'm gonna say seven.
Twenty one.
Because the answer is twenty six.
Wow!
Wow.
Smart move and yet I mean that's yeah, I I think I Like Henry. I like that's insane to me. Because yeah, you've got the new, you got the Vegas one, and then when you start adding up all the like because he's an American drummer.
Yeah.
And he's in all the the paramount parts. And ones that have gone and then there's multiple there's Spongebob SquarePants four D, but then there's SpongeBob SquarePants four D, the great jelly rescue. Different thing. That's a pair you can go on that's something you can do at a holiday in Orlando suite.
That's those used to be Nickelodeon suites. Nickelodeon themed suites. And then it flipped the holiday in, but I think they can't.
Like maybe there's some broader.
Spongebob.
So many of these and and Mall of America and Blackpool Pleasure Beach. He might and he's in some SeaWorlds. Like Spongebob might be. Maybe f full penetration of Sarnet. I don't know why.
Yeah.
Uh uh no just like uh he absolutely covers that's about all of the non Disney Universal Parks. But then also Universal Parks. Right. So about all the non Disney. Well
It does seem like Paramount's ready to deal with anybody. Like oh if you uh if you've got the money for Spongebob, we'll let you have'em. Like we'cause they don't have their own or they they're not that
Yeah, no questions asked, full penetration.
Focused.
¶ Early Nicktoons Rides and Splat City
I was...
Yeah.
I was just thinking now, like w is that the first what's the first Nick Toons ride? And it I think it is Jimmy Neutron technically.
Or that's the same.
Spongebob. Ride maybe there was something at Universal Hollywood called Totally Nickelodeon that was kind of like a live game show. And then that was replaced by a very similar thing. This is in the former Star Trek, now Shrek for D. space and there was also a r something called Rugrats Magic
Okay, well this is a video a three D movie.
No, that was a suited character.
I saw pictures of that. Yes, that looks scary.
Yeah, look at that.
Big rugged.
Yeah. It's still babies. The babies are all grown up.
There's also Nickelodeon Splat City. Which was at like six flags in Santa Clara. And then and and according to this King's Dominion. Yeah.
I went to Splat City.
That's it.
That was from Splats.
That was from Splat City.
Do we know the story? You did okay.
Did you say it was Splat City at the time?
I I think well it was So at some point briefly there was the busy world of Richard Space. And then Paramount started converting it all to Nickelodeon.
And the one was like a big water play area you run through all this water. Right. Uh but there was also a loose thing of like chain link fence and one of it just scratched like a two inch scratch like barely surface deep on my belly but it just would not So we had to get like just a little bit at a time and it probably didn't help that like after that happened it just got pelted by chlorinated water from all directs.
You should have healed it right up.
And then well that's what I would think.
This was King's Island? Huh? This was King's Island? King's Dominions, they were both at both places.
Yeah.
Hears try to make me understand what their intent in putting a a a pointy chain link fence.
Um
If you were in their shoes.
You remember at D Z Discovery Zone? Fence with the T Vs playing like it was like
We're eating.
Remember that is.
This was an actual chain link fence step. I think it was to make sure kids didn't run out of the water tunnel and run just
So make sure you don't get too full of yourself. Here's a little there's a here's a little slice. Look, you're human, kid. Here's a reminder.
I mean it was that chain link. You remember that chain link that used to be covered in like green pl Kind of blend in. Uh plants. That also the plastic too also gets sharp when the whole thing
Oh with like phrase. I know what you say.
So it was just a jagged thing in that and I perfectly ran by it.
Yeah.
pay attention to loose fencing.
Did any other children see it and scream?
I don't know.
Okay. You don't recall somebody you didn't find out by like a girl three years younger than you shrieking.
You're bleeding.
Spraying blood.
Yeah.
Short little weirdo.
There were different attractions here. There's a whole list of what they had attractions at Splat City. So could we determine what attraction it was that you cut yourself at?
Yeah, that's right.
It's gotta be.
You think it was?
Yeah.
Green slime zone zone. There was also a slime bowl where you would see like movies. Maybe I think Splat City is an episode. Oh. Like we're calling that.
I guess so.
I think we're going to Splat City. Sorry, Jason.
Bye.
You still have the mark?
Yeah, I got a lot of hair on my chest and belly now.
First of all, shave it right there and then just so we can get a good look at it, and then we'll compare it to the width of different types of fence materials.
But try to find out
Let's see if we can recreate the
Well compare my carving station scar and Flat cities car.
Yeah.
I'm pretty sure I demanded to see the scar the first time you ever brought it up and I think you said you couldn't see it.
Um, yeah, probably. I mean we can
I started ripping at your clothes to try to see it and he said it's not there.
Take'em off.
Yeah.
Sorry, we're not that close.
I'm just not.
I would Mike.
I mean literally it's why you guys are recording at a decent distance. That's why we want to make sure you you aren't able to reach out and Take your shirt off at any time.
¶ Nicktoons Games and Future of the Brand
I know. I wish. Uh there's all these different like mo the Mega Messamania, which was a messy show, like Doubledare. Apparently it's last.
But not the double dare oh that's funny, they call it mega Mesomania, not like double dares mega
But there's a lot of different Nick Nicktoons Rockin' Countdown, a New Year's Eve millennium themed version of the previous show, complete with a simulated ball drop. A brand new climac climactic game called Doodill's Diaper.
Uh get the I'm not doing shores on vacation.
Yeah, yeah. Do you want if you ever want hey you thirteen year old, you ever wanted to change a diaper?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Keep in mind their last name is Pickles, so this could be a little bit more than a little bit.
Sticky.
Well they per stink typically determined by last name.
So anyway, yeah. I cause I I seeing the Jimmy Neutron stuff I'm just like I was jealous that there wasn't a height of Nick Tunes for me ride of some kind that like combined all the characters and look. Uh cool and not uh horribly unfinished.
Well yeah, like our child our childhood guys just have to be like quick little references. Right. Go, or are you twenty? You don't uh here, there's a second
I wanted this I want more.
I I the the walkthrough or there's the the one I saw on YouTube uh ahead of this of like the you know, full full ride experience, pre show, post show, all that It must have been nearer to the end of it when the uh it was filmed because The you know, the exit to the gift shop, gift shop, all SpongeBob and the character meet and greet area there, only SpongeBob with like permanent it wasn't like, oh Spongebob is in the general area that you would get a picture within.
character. No, it was like the bikini bottom background and you know uh the uh the homes of the character. Like so I d I mean did you guys see the Jimmy Neutron walk around that they built? Like there's no way to make they look it just looks terrible. The head
It's insane. I mean what I saw is a photo of Jimmy Neutron on
Yeah.
That's
That's a bonk.
Does he have real long legs?
Well'cause there's a adult in there.
Not Nick Cage long legs, but like yeah, he's really tall.
Yeah. I think it's hard to yeah, figure that out proportions wise in.
Yeah, that's what I wonder.
That guy's probably put on every costume you could put on. It's like he's the one jetpack guy in town. He's like he's been Santa Claus. He's been Goofy, he's been Jimmy Neutron.
I like to say this town works for me.
Well, you can find somebody else who has a jetpack at five o'clock? I don't think so.
Time to blast, kid.
Uh
No. Besides Different. Yeah. So I r I guess I really gotta ask You do dil die dil type.
Is that also wordplay? Like do do do? Uh.
Right.
Yeah.
Yeah. It was not
Maybe that you're right, but then also do they is it Changing Dill's diapers just has no appeal whatsoever. It's like they have to do a euphemism.
Changes. There's I see Nicktoon's rockin' countdown here, which is what it's it that was in So perhaps that's where we'll find out the answers.
There's a SpongeBob attraction brand new one year ago in a Spongebob land at a park called the Land of Lake. What is this? When you're come across Landolit. Entirely new March first. I mean it's like a Nick land with I think SpongeBob and
And turtles in there?
Uh I don't think turtles. I think it's uh I think maybe Pawpa.
Snooze.
Wow. The Iranians were right about uh there really are no heroes in America besides Spider Man and SpongeBob.
Oh, yeah.
Uh, yeah. SpongeBob, it's so crazy they just missed when Spongebob was like If they had released the ride in like oh five or oh four, then they would have known SpongeBob is like their number one guy, no stop at him character. And they would have known to make it just the Spongebob ride. But it's they're stuck with Jimmy Neutron until until they close the thing. Like probably and to like renegotiate the deal they'd probably have to pay a whole lot more to like remake it
Yeah, and now they're now like that's all gonna be in a very different corporate umbrella unless antitrust stuff makes that not happen. I don't know. It just gets more and more I don't know. Merger or no merger, Spongebob. Twenty six more new attractions.
Yes. I think in Orlando there is still at at Universal Orlando, I think Spongebob still has a footprint there'cause that I think it's still open the SpongeBob store page.
Yeah, but I went in last time. It's really fun. You can go through the pineapple, there's photo stuff, there's so much
They're like hanging around.
¶ Social Media, CGI Movies and Weezer Music
Well also have you guys uh seen the like my husband and show My husband I I am old in that my my husband who's like uh eight years younger than me, he he's like, Here let me show you TikToks. These are what people talk about. But one of them is
That's Just Jason for us.
And I'm only four. Um but
That's the the f that that's those lines that separate you. You're of an age to not like Jimmy Neutron and we're all most of us are of an age to not be on the next one.
It but he'll show me like the Squidward Dabbing memes, like those must all be filmed at like we're
Well now yeah, here's the story about that. So Squidbird Dabbing was in a parade at university. That em worker got fired for doing that. I heard through the I called the police on that. I called the police. But then a while back, I forget whether it was Comic Con or they were just selling it online. They were selling dabbing Squidward action figures. Oh my god. So they profited off it and then a guy got
He made uh he gave them so much free advertising and gets
Oh yeah.
Yeah.
Nobody stopped.
Boy, I gotta say though, Squidward dabbing, I gotta get on TikTok. I've been missing out.
Well,
Why didn't anybody tell me?
That's what they got going on over there.
I will say uh uh the look of J. It is more visually I on like Roku suggested on the Roku homepage. It said the emoji stream the stream night Um, it said like free to watch the emoji movie. I watched the first five minutes of that. That might be the ugliest thing I've ever seen. Like, oh, I'd rather watch Jimmy Neutron than this. They're like oh they were in the they all live in your phone button Uh promote it to the app?
Is it that they're like I I I think ex Isn't it that like they're like they're at like a bar and they're like in position and waiting to be chosen?
No, it's a city. It's a whole city. So they're locked in. Their jobs are what emoji they But they have to do the best job at being like meh or poop. Upgrade it to messaging.
Yeah. So there's so you're there's uh there's a bunch of poops and you got but you gotta be the best poop.
They pulled the trigger on the poop gag real Before that, it's just TJ Miller Met emoji trying to impress his parents who are also Met emojis.
It doesn't sound like you like this movie.
Yeah I was not really enjoying this.
I know, it's a shot.
I या
Go figure. Meet Smiler.
Smiler.
Good for her.
Uh then well well meanwhile Jimmy Neutron is like well he's just the Bob's big boy. Like her.
Yeah.
A meets a deed.
That's it.
But that's a good thing.
The poster is.
Yeah, that's what's so confusing. It's I've multiple people I've encountered who say, Meet the deals. That's a movie with the surf hair guys. No. No. That's that shows you what a bad poster. That it made you think they're surf hair guys.
I I only know it for being a home to a weezer B side. That's what I don't mean to But do you believe?
It's a good song.
Think it's that.
I don't actually don't know if it's on there. I know that because it's on the blue, it's like on the deluxe blue. Right. Right. Michael and Carly.
It was it was in that.
M Y K-E-L-
There's there's only like four but there were only like seven Weezer songs that weren't on the first two albums as opposed to now when they
They're all eight hundred.
Well when you find long time sunshine for the first time you go, Oh my god, how is this not on an album?
You try to track down Suzanne.
Well, yes. Suzanne, yes. That's a that's much more famous though compared to what we're talking about.
Yeah, I guess.
¶ Jimmy Neutron's Legacy and Spin-offs
Uh but uh but no the Jimmy Neutron look, I don't know. He's like now I'm wondering if kids are more into'em now. I occasionally do see like from the youngers of referencing characters from it or they they actually had like an attempted spin off. No, they had a spin off but it got cancelled in one season starring the Gene who's the the comic book fan character, like who loves he has a every show has to have a fake comic book character.
Which this came up on a podcast where I could not remember
Mm.
Which episode that feels pandemic era to me, where we discovered that Sheen exists. And I believe in the same course of discussion we realize there's a Jimmy Neutron character that's an alien named Travoltron.
Yeah.
Really? Really?
Three there are Zix, uh T and Travoltron.
Yeah.
Who are aliens.
Interesting.
I think we did we went through Sheen and Travoltron like five years ago. Deep pandemic.
Covered in.
And if you think so, somebody a listener will tell us maybe that is a better memory than us. But I'm pretty sure they all popped up at the same time of like
Really talented.
Uh do also on the ride, do you think they had to like pay or negotiate with the Elvis estate to have like they say Elvis and it's
Oh right, right.
Like they don't they don't call it like famous singer or southern singer.
It's a good question. I don't know.
Well I'm reading that Travoltron was a
John though.
Yeah.
It would uh
But I assume it's a parody of like Saturday night fever, John Travolta.
Yeah, yeah.
Not award show pit bull friend, John Trip. We are obsessed with it.
Well if he's an evil alien, it could be a battlefield.
Oh, interesting. Maybe that is what it is.
That's the see again in the movie like in the ride too they keep calling back to the movie and I just know it is like When the big poltar pole poltar, the giant chicken monster. Poltr yeah, like when that comes out, I then check like that's in the movie, right? Like, yes, yeah. It's like the it's the big monster of the movie. So when he's like You're supposed to be going like, Whoa, the big monster from the movie's back. I thought they killed it. Oh no.
Like
Right.
It really expects you to be a fan of the Jimmy Neutron film.
Yeah.
Which was a big hit.
Nominated.
It it was overshadowed by Shrek at the box office too, but it did it was a box office success as well.
Yeah.
Also I've I've felt I have me and Bob on on our podcast and f I felt the burn of the divide of elder elder and younger millennial. When we covered Shrek 2 and we were not into Shrek 2 and thought it was not good, we really heard it from our listeners. Oh wonderful listeners who are great and if you grew up with Shrek 2 and love it, then I'm glad.
¶ Puss in Boots and Shrek Franchise Evolution
Uh so
Oh yeah, yeah. Yes, definitely.
Well yeah. Oh, and I just let go.
Did they defend Shrek and the
You know, they basically we said, Oh, Shrek two like sucks and we're like, You don't even know how bad Shrek three and four get was uh Shrek two's the good one is is a especially as compared
Henry, let me ask you that do you remember do you remember when the one Puss in Boots movie?
The uh the the last wish, the recent.
The last witch.
Yeah, yeah. Which I I did see it. I would say it was good. I was I had rock bottom expectations for it and I did I did Uh they they snuck in good animation in it and
Yeah.
in Dream World. Like they basically do like Spider-Verse style animation. It really breaks what I expected from what I imagined was the very staid DreamWorks style, which that's an out of date perception I had of DreamWorks. DreamWorks animation does lots of
Well, yeah.
I think people were just very defensive. Like people are defending the honor of Puss and Boots.
But people m so you're saying people m making fun of it initially and then people were defending.
Think peop well, no, people were defending it with their lives and I think they were defending it from uh Mm. Why uh have so many adults pledged their fealty to Puss in boots the last.
Horny for pussy boots? That's part of it?
Very romantic figure I mean.
Is that part of it?
I think they were pulled in by it has a lot of therapy speak in it too of like it is about like acceptance of death and uh and panic attacks. Like puss Puss and Boots needs to get over his panic attacks.
It says panic attack?
Yes, yeah.
Sounds like a blessing.
Like a fun, like lover character.
Uh John Mullaney is also very funny in it. He is he plays uh little the the guy he sticks his thumb in a pie and
Um Jason? Yeah.
No.
No, not Tom Thumb. Who puts his finger on?
Little boy blue.
That's it, yeah. That's yes. He's he's very it it actually is a good movie, I have to say. I and I'm a shrekator, though it also is funny, it ends with the promise of If you like this movie, we're going back to Shrek. Like he's he's like after spoilers, sir he survives the movie, he doesn't die in it. And Pussin' Pootsy's like, I need to go see. It ends with it the tease like almost post credit tease is like he's about to arrive at far, far away of like your
Okay.
Yeah.
Uh
Shrick, it's okay to be scared.
Just breathe. It's okay.
I I'm s I I think the next Shrek movie, since it is about like his kids are adults now showing him TikToks, that it is gonna be like his kid goes to a way to college and he feels old and sad like it'll be an empty nester movie like the Like the sec second Wreck It Ralph movie is about my kid went to college and I feel old. Like that's what Wreck Ralph too.
Oh.
Isabelle.
Well.
The twins I think are at college. I don't think
I I wonder if they're gonna kill one of the kids even. Like uh like if like in Avatar, one of the kids like they uh we got one kid too many. Let's kill one of the kids.
They're gonna kill Harry Styles, Ferkle?
Boy, what did he say?
Marcelo Hernandez.
It could be Marcel. There's a lot of kids.
Solo is one of them, yeah.
No way, yes. Here, you're thinking of you're thinking of Eros, aka Star Fox.
So that's Harry's.
For Marvel Comics.
From that trail.
oh yeah yeah
Yep, yep. It's him and Pip, the troll, uh played by Padden Oswald, and I can't oh man. Someday Eternals two.
Well, post credits. Well I was only two and a half hours away from seeing that post credits.
Can't fast forward, I guess.
¶ Jimmy Neutron Ride's Shortcomings and Successors
Uh uh okay. Uh uh I guess on the way out the door here. Any any b uh closing thoughts, memories, uh uh wishes, uh desires for the uh uh do we wanna anyone wanna defend the honor of Jimmy Neutron uh Puss and Boot? Or do we feel like this was kind of a a relic of its time to
Usually at a very short wait and it was good place to wait. Mm. And most importantly for my Lord. The cool dog stand was part where I
Cool dog stand. Say more. This was at Universal Studio?
Oh very briefly. But I only recently found it.
Two thousand and seven.
People who grew up in New England.
Oh, it was a brand cool dog. Cool dogs. With like a like ice cream.
Same hot talk.
So they had this in the
Yeah.
We had it very briefly at Universal. I learned about it from an episode of Unrap. But they might have have it had it at Fenway Park.
So you remember having a cool dog over by this rock?
Over in this snack of the woods.
Wow, can we find documentation of when Universal decided to cancel their partnership with Cool Dog?
Jason, tell me about your life. Well, Outside Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon blast. Something amazing happened.
That looks that to me looks better than a Chaco Taco. I'd rather have a fake hot dog.
That was
This is the key I think issue in would I like a cool
Well the bone was spongy.
Okay.
Some of the pictures look good and then this picture looks like disgusting to me.
It's the sausageified and Sort of inverted anus at the end of the cool
The tie off of the sausage.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's a little bit.
That looks we really weird to me. Yeah.'Cause it makes it look uh not well, penis ish I guess.
Well but Mike, they would put rainbow sprinkles on top with the chocolate sauce.
The picture with the sprinkles I like, but this picture with this angle where I'm getting the end of it is very penis like and then it looks like it's just like all the blood has been drained from it. And it's like
Gray penis.
Yeah. A gray a gray sickly long penis. In a bun of a spon made of sponge.
Uh it was pure white, thank you very much.
Uh I I like uh as Jimmy Neutron as a thing, I I I more just feel sad that like NickTunes as a branding is over. Like Nick the Nicktoons continue. There's like eight different SpongeBob T V shows on TV. Briefly there was a very good thing.
Yes, my wife made that show, yes.
Yes, yeah. They they there should have been more of that fairly odd period.
They're not making a lot over there these days. That's what I'll say.
Well the
We're waiting for the merger. You know, what's the merger?
No, whole Nickelodeon.
Yeah, and I'm sure it'll be quick now.
It got bought by real life plankton and Mr. Krabs, so they don't really relate to the the content model.
So so yeah, I I like that there was at least a ride that was the general Nicktoon brand before they even just like dumped that branding for just individual cartoons. And it came when like the tween market really popped up and like They had to have all of their own Hannah Montana things to keep up with it. Like Hannah Montana was so huge that they invested way more in the live action shows that uh you know, there's a whole documentary about making those live actions.
About how fun it was?
Oh yeah, yeah.
Okay.
But so it's nice to see the cartoons that didn't hurt anybody.
Oh.
Having uh
Other than probably people being uh stiffed financially.
You're okay.
Seems like the the nineties Viacom way.
Red and Stimpy in there is a little
Well.
Google John K. What's he?
Well you know as as Homer Simpson says, everything's bad if you remember. And I have to looking at this, th this lasted uh like eight years and before it Fantastic Hanna Barbera was like eleven ish. It really does make me think like boy the minions really got it. Like they have lasted 14 years and counting in that same build. And with no sign of stopping, they d they didn't they got another ride in addition to the Minions Mayhem thing.
Yeah, they they expand. Yeah.
¶ Podcast Outro and Guest Promotion
