Not many people can claim to have an Emmy, Grammy AND a Tony award all on the mantlepiece – but Cynthia Erivo is an actress and singer whose immense talent has earned her recognition across the globe in a very short space of time. Roles in films like Harriet (the incredible story of former-slave and abolitionist Harriet Tubman) and on-stage in The Colour Purple, have garnered respect from the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Janelle Monáe – people who Cynthia has gone from being fans-of to friends-with. But as she explains to Tom, at the start of her career she didn’t even believe she would belong at acting school, until a mentor gave her the push she needed to start a chain reaction of plot twists!
