It's January 1901 and Professors Ward, Hussey & Barrow are joined by their colleague Dr Aldthorpe for a New Year break prior to the start of the Lent Term. Raith-by-Spilsby has much to recommend it to their scholarly interests as archaeologist, theologian, art historian and mediaevalist, respectively, with its monastic ruins and a castle re-modelled in the Regency style. There's academic tensions, howling at dusk, and a mortified landlady. Then an archaeological find, whispers, and a 'friend' from the Boer War before ... a sorcerous ritual and the taxidermied remains of 'Blessed by God Francis' ...
