Roe McDermott is a writer, journalist, and Fulbright scholar with an MA in Journalism; an MA in Sexuality Studies from San Francisco State University, where she wrote a thesis on Irish women’s experiences of abortion; and an MFA in Creative Writing from UCD, where her creative thesis was supervised by Booker award winning writer Anne Enright. Roe has taught in SFSU, UCD and the Irish Writers Centre. Roe is also a columnist for The Irish Times, the film editor for Hot Press magazine, and has carved out as a career as a public intellectual in Ireland, frequently contributing to national discussions on culture and politics. Roe's creative non-fiction essays have been published in The Rumpus, The Coven, and Khora, and in 2020, Roe was awarded the Irish Arts Council’s Next Generation Artist Award for Literature.
