Christmas Rules and Traditions

Speaker 1

In the last 10 years , our field has gone from an unknown specialty to a household name . This brings unprecedented opportunities , but we need to rise up to meet them and give our patients the care that they deserve . In order to help others get better , we need to be better .

This podcast will help you to become more confident with your patients , more successful in your practice or business and a leader in pelvic health , and we're going to have some fun along the way . Join us as we rise together .

We're Jesse and Nicole Cozine , founders of Pelvic Kennedy Physical Therapy and the creators of the Pelvic PT Puddle , and this is Pelvic PT Rising .

Speaker 2

Hey guys , welcome back to a special Christmas edition of the Pelvic PT Rising podcast with Jesse and Nicole Cozine . Merry Christmas , Nicole .

Speaker 1

Merry Christmas , Jesse .

Speaker 2

Oh right , if you're listening to this on Christmas Day , you probably are trying to escape your family , which I very much understand .

Speaker 1

Yes , thank you so much , though , for being a part of the Pelvic PT Rising podcast . We are just so thankful and grateful to you .

Even though it's not New Year's yet , we definitely use Christmas time as like a time to be reflective , and , as the year is coming to a close , we just wanted to extend a very heartfelt thank you so much to all of you who listen , whether you're a newer listener or you are a Pelvic PT Rising podcast .

Oh gee , we really appreciate you and we're so excited that you spend time with us here .

Speaker 2

Absolutely Same thing for everybody who has been to PelvicCon , for anybody who's been in particularly the Rising One and Rising Two business mentorship groups and all the work we've been able to do with you and getting to know you guys and your businesses , those who have just been through and finished the Accelerator program this first cohort , who took a chance on a

brand new program and getting to see your guys' growth and everything that happened in that program . And then my one announcement for this podcast is that the next cohort of the Accelerator is coming up in January .

It opens for that on December 28th , so you guys will have a couple of days to digest that wonderful Christmas food that you're hopefully having and make a decision on that cohort . It is going to be a lot of fun . So , Nicole , it's been a big year . Clay is almost a year old . Like a year ago he was like a little fish just swimming around in there .

Speaker 1

Swimming around . Remember we were like we were freaked out that he was going to come early . And we got to this point last year and he was just still cooking in there . I mean , though our whole pregnancy we thought that like he was going to come at . Our maternal fetal medicine person was like excited when we got to 24 , then 28 , then 32 .

Every step of the way it seemed like everybody was freaking out that he was going to come early and he sure didn't . He was right on his due date on December 28th .

This time last year he was still inside , although my service was probably dilated , because when I got to the hospital my service was already dilated to 10 centimeters , which was pretty gnarly crazy time .

Speaker 2

And we're sure that that like had happened . I actually I don't even want to know . I don't even want to know if we're walking . I don't want to know about the cervix dilation situation . Yeah .

Speaker 1

Nope , jesse , don't care .

Speaker 2

No one wants to know how deep the cave runs , guys . Okay , okay , jesse , that is well , it's what we're looking for .

Moving on , so segue , if you guys were looking for any clinical pearls , business wisdom , any of the stuff that you are used to finding on this podcast , you will not find it here today , we are just going to explore Nicole's strongly held beliefs surrounding Christmas .

Speaker 1

I have a lot of them , you guys , so y'all know me now by now . Hopefully we do podcast episodes on shit that needs to be said . We just had one on business edition . We have someone coming up in the new year on the clinician side , but this is a Christmas edition . Shit that needs to be said . And where does this even come from , jesse ?

Speaker 2

Well , this comes from the clash of our family cultures , with your family and Christmas , who are a little much and by a little I mean a lot much and my family , who are a little little .

Speaker 1

They are very little Not enough , almost not enough .

Speaker 2

So when we got together , there was I was just shocked by all of the traditions , but also all of the rules and judgment surrounding other people's celebration of the holiday . But now I'm into it , so let's dive in , nicole .

Speaker 1

I know .

Speaker 2

Let's hear about some of these Christmas rules that we have .

Speaker 1

You're a disclaimer , though . Okay , do not get offended by what I'm about to say . If you do any of these things on this list , you know that's fine , you do you , okay . But also but also there are rules and right and wrong ways to do Christmas for sure , and so I'm going to let you into the mind of Nicole's crazy Christmas brain .

Speaker 2

Okay , so when can we put decorations up ?

Speaker 1

Okay , you guys , these for Christmas cannot go up before Thanksgiving .

Speaker 2

Now what if Thanksgiving super late though ?

Speaker 1

Okay , I do understand . It's a good point , jesse .

Speaker 2

Like last year , was almost the 28th where Okay Thanksgiving was Right .

Speaker 1

Well , sometimes , because of the way Thanksgiving falls and it's different every year and all the things , like it happens to fall quite late , where the weekend of Thanksgiving is also December 1st .

In that case , everyone needs to just hold off until you have Thanksgiving dinner and then the next day you get your public on ticket you get your public on ticket on Black Friday and then you can decorate for Christmas . But like you don't want to be sitting at a freaking table for Thanksgiving with your fall decorations and also Christmas .

I mean , everybody wants to get all nuts about Christmas and so it's like , just hang on a little bit . I mean , stores are going to do it in freaking October , which is just absolutely ridiculous . But don't give in people , Okay .

Speaker 2

Now , when are these coming ?

Speaker 1

down . Okay , coming down is actually more important . I'm a little bit more lenient for people doing things a little bit earlier . I would say that it's dumb , but I would still all allow it . But after I mean , this is like a hard and fast , like they cannot be up past the weekend after New Year's .

So this year , actually in 2024 , it's kind of annoying because the first is on a Monday .

Speaker 2

Yes , we get in longer time with our Christmas decorations ? You do yes .

Speaker 1

Because it's like everyone's got to go back to work on Tuesday most of the time , so it's like kind of nuts and so it needs to be done like that next weekend like off , but inboxes up in the rafters , done fricking , leave your damn Christmas lights up and on . It's seriously so annoying .

It's like we need to move on 2024 , like let's go , we just had New Year's . Get your shit together .

Speaker 2

I am very much not in that camp . If you leave them up for longer , I love it . If you leave them up long enough , you can call them Valentine's Day lights , and then you're ready to rock and roll .

Speaker 1

And you're not allowed to just turn them off , you lazy asses . You have to take them off of your house . So many rules .

Speaker 2

Okay .

Speaker 1

Jesse was like don't get so crazy . I was like I can't not get crazy about this because , seriously , when you're driving around , it's like , oh my gosh , they're either on , or they're on the house and off , which is also dumb .

Speaker 2

Wait . So the other day you get so mad when we drive around and you see people . What is it about people's Christmas lights that you don't like what you got ? I don't know what was it . They were somewhere blinking . I don't like when it looks like shit .

Speaker 1

That's what I don't like . I don't like it when it looks like shit . Okay . So you guys , if you are the people that have multiple different types of lights , I cannot with you .

Okay , if there's some that are blinking and some that are flashing , and some that are running and some that are small and some that are big , like , come on , can you just like take a little like , have a little bit of foresight and just be like wow , I think I might need to order more of these same kinds .

So I have some sort of thing looking like your house , like we can't just have it like you just threw up on there . It doesn't . There's a house on our street that's kind of like that and it's like so annoying . It's like you're not just allowed to like be like oh , here's a string of lights , let me just go find a spot to put that up .

Do you know how many times like I was like , oh , we can't do this . We moved and like we have to buy new lights because now we have to like decide what do we want ? We want icicles here , we want snowflakes over here , we want around this window , and then all the windows or whatever cannot look like shit . Ok , so do a little gander outside your house .

Speaker 2

Make sure it's not janky . Janky is a good Christmas word .

Speaker 1

Janky , like yeah , or it's just like what is happening over here , when it's just like that's way too much .

I even am OK if you have like a lot of stuff , like there's some people that have just like a shit ton of stuff on their lawn , but it's like if it's all those stupid blow up things , then that's fine , but like you're not allowed to have blow up things and also the way , eight million different types of lights it's really about the different types of lights ,

because I'm OK if you have like a lot of things out . Ok , jesse's looking at me like you are nutball .

Speaker 2

I am Well just so you guys know

Christmas Decorating Mishaps and Traditions

where we're coming from . In the janky side here , the first Christmas that I invited Nicole to my family's house was a mistake .

Speaker 1

This story yes .

Speaker 2

I mean , this story is not that crazy . So my dad had somehow at his school had won a outdoor , one of those like white outdoor deer that people put in their yards right . Just quite nice , which is quite nice Back in high school another funny story .

But you would go deer mounting right you drive around and find those and you take one and you make it mount another one .

Speaker 1

OK , If Clay does that , I think I'll well love it . It's pretty funny right .

Speaker 2

OK , people just wake up in the morning and like one of their deers is on top of their other deer .

Speaker 1

OK .

Speaker 2

Anyway , that actually sounds like a lot of fun right now , but my dad had gotten one of those . There was not another deer , so there was no deer mounting going on , but he had mounted it on inside on the coffee table around which everybody was sitting .

Speaker 1

I am not joking , guys , and it was not a small one . It's not one of those ones . That was like laying down it was like standing up one .

Speaker 2

It was a life-size deer .

Speaker 1

So he goes , I'm like , oh , what's this doing here , essentially ? And he was like , oh , I was fixing it . And so I put it on the coffee table and then I thought it looked kind of nice , so I'm just going to keep it here . And I was like , oh my God , what the hell did I get into ?

Speaker 2

So for that whole Christmas that we all sat around this coffee table looking over and through this lit deer at each other talking about Christmas .

Speaker 1

The craziest thing is that your family thought that that was like the best Christmas decoration ever .

Speaker 2

Oh yeah , it wasn't tongue-in-cheek .

Speaker 1

I mean , this was not like ironic , they were dead serious , and I think this might have been the same year where your freaking family did Like they put their Christmas tree in the corner in the dining room , which is like not where it's supposed to go , but like .

Speaker 2

But where is the Christmas tree supposed to go In ?

Speaker 1

one of your main gathering areas . So family room , living room , somewhere where you're going to like be mostly sometimes near the fireplace , whatever . So this is in the dining room , which is not big , by the way .

So then you're kind of like having to knock down the Christmas tree as you're trying to sit in a damn chair and I'm not joking , you guys it was half half lit , like they ran out of Christmas tree lights , then just left it . They just left it . I Was like appalled .

I'm like I don't know if we can even be together , like if this is how y'all celebrate Christmas .

Speaker 2

Like I can't your blood pressure right now is .

Speaker 1

I just it's just so Hard to believe is really what it is .

Speaker 2

It really is alright , so talk to me about speaking of Christmas trees . I evidently put ornaments on Christmas trees incorrectly and I've been doing this Wrong my whole life . Nicole has been kind enough to make me aware of this massive personal failure .

Speaker 1

I just and I what I don't understand to is that I Look , look , okay , when you put on the Christmas ornaments , there needs to be Care taken as to how close they are to another one . We need to have some depth to them . We need to the ones that are crystal-y and and pretty . We need to put by a light so they light up .

We need to put the heavy ones on thick branches . Like we need to sometimes get hooks out if the ornament String is not appropriate or and we can't have it completely resting on the branch below . Okay , there's a lot of things and I have tried to Tell Jesse about these things and he thinks he gets it .

Like , now that I'm looking at you , I'm like you probably are just acting like you understand , and then just trying to piss me off by putting it in the completely wrong place .

But I think he gets it and then I'm like , okay , like I'm gonna allow him to like put some ornaments on the tree it's his tree too now and then I have to like go and recheck where he puts his things and then they're always in the wrong Place and it finally now he just doesn't do it anymore .

Speaker 2

You would think I could get one in the correct place on Accident . I mean , it's a big tree and there's a lot of ornaments . You would think that just by accident , if I randomly put things different places , one would be correct . That is not a solid method . No Christmas tree decorations . Here's the thing .

Speaker 1

One of the really cool Vosk is family traditions , though , is that every year since I was little and could like stand , I always got my own Christmas tree , so almost every single ornament actually on that tree has Significance , and so some of them are ones that I made when I was like three .

Some of them are ones that were given to me when I was , like , you know , five and two , and so they Mean something , and so you can't , like bury them in a branch , all of it , and Jesse puts them on all wrong . So , finally , I'm just like you know what .

It's actually better if you just don't touch the tree , but I don't want to decorate the tree by myself , so then I make him like sit out there with me with Christmas music on as I decorate the tree .

Speaker 2

Traditions , guys . Remember when I had that Christmas tree that I just had the one ornament on because your mom got me my first Christmas ornament .

Speaker 1

Oh

Christmas Traditions and Gift Giving Etiquette

my God , okay . So first of all , this goes into our next thing , like if you celebrate Christmas , then you need to have a tree . Like , even if that's nothing else that you do , you can have a tree and it really like spruces up the whole , spruces , spruces , hey , spruces up the whole deal right , even if you have zero other Christmas decorations .

So Jesse had bought a house and he was living there by himself , and so I'm like you need to have a tree . So he slups up this tree and you know he doesn't put lights on it , which I'm like , okay , at least he got the tree . This is all in , like the dating stages . So I'm like , oh God , okay .

Speaker 2

Well , we're working on a lot of things that was back when I was trying to hide her crazy instead of broadcasting out to everybody on a podcast .

Speaker 1

And so I'm like , well , whatever he has a tree , this is nice . And so my mom got him an ornament . And there's just like one ornament on there and I'm like , okay , I'm like surely he'll put some lights on it or something .

And he did not the whole time and then left it up until like fucking February , and then I had to put my foot down when it was like that . I was like we got to get this dead tree out of here now .

Speaker 2

Guys , if you're carried , the one carrying the tree out realizes it's lighter the longer you leave it up . So yeah , leave it up till February . Super easy to go out . It basically just dissolves on the way down , no problems . Nicole , I think we also need to hear your thoughts on gifts . I my first gift to Nicole for Christmas . I thought was wonderful .

She had been having problems and was doing a lot of work at home and when did ? I was having a lot of problems , well , you were always calling me and like can you print this ? Oh , yeah , yeah .

Speaker 1

I was like you have to qualify the problems . I wasn't just having like random problems , I was having printer problems .

Speaker 2

You're having a lack of printer problems , so I got her a printer .

Speaker 1

And she wrapped up under the Christmas tree . I'm like , oh cool , this is like one of our first Christmas times and we're like exchanging gifts and I'm like , oh my gosh , it's kind of a big box . This is so amazing . What's it going to be ? And it was a printer .

Speaker 2

I stand by it Like an actual printer . Yes , an actual useful thing in your house , something that you needed , that you didn't have , that served you well for eight years . What did you get me for Christmas that year , nicole ? It wasn't an appliance that I'm still using .

Speaker 1

I'm not using that printer anymore either .

Speaker 2

I mean , you used it good for a while .

Speaker 1

I did , but anyways so but like , okay , gifts need to be thoughtful , but also something that you don't aren't just going to like get off Amazon yourself out of necessity .

Speaker 2

Right , but time out here because I feel like it's a little bit rich coming from you talking about gift giving , because Nicole feels like it counts if she thinks about giving me a gift . When was the last birthday present that I got ? Oh , birthday's different when was the last Christmas present that I got for you .

Speaker 1

I gave you Christmas presents .

Speaker 2

What .

Speaker 1

I freaking got you like the Salt Life shirts . Surprise , we said we and I even did it when we said we weren't going to give each other gifts . And I freaking gave you a gift that year .

Speaker 2

Guys .

Speaker 1

What I don't give is birthday gifts . I'm always like , oh , I , oh , yeah , I really need to do that . It's coming up and then I don't , and then I'm like whatever .

Speaker 2

No , you're not even doing whatever it's like . Then you tell me all the things that you thought about getting me , and you say that it's the thought that counts .

Speaker 1

It is , though , and then just like go buy that shit if you want it . How ?

Speaker 2

was that ? Did I do ?

Speaker 1

good the thought , anyways , okay , so I don't give birthday gifts . I'm really bad about that . I'm going to have to get better , because we can't like ignore our kids' birthdays . We have to like do something for Clay , and it's going to be on the heels of Christmas . It was just always going to be a problem .

Speaker 2

Well , can we just do like a combo birthday Christmas thing ? Oh , absolutely not . Are you kidding what you guess to share his birthday with Jesus ?

Speaker 1

Oh , please , that's not even true . Wasn't you born in like May or something ? Actually Scientists don't know .

Speaker 2

Okay , scientists don't know shit about that . Okay , so evidently we're gonna be doing a different thing for Chloe's birthday . I thought Christmas would I mean . And then there's fireworks . We just celebrate on the July or January 1st . No , no , no , no , no . Okay , okay , what else , nicole , you timeliness , I feel like , is always an issue around Christmas .

Speaker 1

Okay , well , especially when you get excited about Christmas time .

Okay , if somebody in your family is really excited about Christmas and is like like me , right , that's like okay , we're doing all these things , we have the plan of like what's what we're gonna eat and and approximately what time , and so we tell people to come over and we try to act nonchalant about it . But we're really not nonchalant .

Really shalant AF we were shalant AF and so like if someone says like , oh , we're gonna eat around four , why don't you come over at like 2 30 , then the latest you need to get there is 3pm .

Speaker 2

Okay , like an hour before eating time . At least Okay , and then hold on .

Speaker 1

this is crazy , because the thing is , it's like we have orders and we get excited and we want to do like champagne and whatever , unless we're at your house and then there's no drinking and then I want to die , and so it's just like all of that , like we have a plan and so , even though we are acting like super , like whatever , it doesn't matter , get here

when you get here . It's not like that .

Speaker 2

Okay , so show up . So really , when you say like show up anytime after two , but before four , you really mean show up sometime between 2 , 30 , 5 and 2 30 .

Speaker 1

I just mean , if they say around two , then like the most you should do is a half an hour after that , and then here's a weird Christmas tradition .

Speaker 2

You and your mom and your sister all lie to each other about where you are and how long it's going to be until you're there . You guys are just like I don't know what . It is the most honest family in every other time . And then we get around the holidays and you guys just straight faced lie . We're like , oh , I'm on my way .

And I'm like , no , we're not . We're on the couch , my feet are still up , I don't have any pants on . We're no , we're close to on our way . What are you talking about ? And you guys have to check each other . It's like your sister will be like I'm on the way and you're like , okay , what exit are you at ?

Yeah , like , show me , show me , show me , she's like well , no , I'm not on the way you caught me , I'm like you , liars .

Speaker 1

I know I'm always like FaceTime me then and she's like , well , just kidding , like we're almost going to leave , and I was like Courtney , god damn it .

Speaker 2

Whatever ?

Speaker 1

But we're trying to get there at a time when we know that people are going to be pissed off if we come later than so . We're trying , to like decrease the the Christmas anger .

Speaker 2

Okay , well , Nicole , I think that might be all that we really need to talk about when it comes to Christmas . Is there anything else , any other shit that needs to be said about Christmas ?

Speaker 1

I think that's quite enough . This is a fun episode to do .

Speaker 2

I hope you guys actually like this . We want to do something a little more lighthearted . Around this time of year . We know that you guys are busy . Hopefully this has been a fun episode to just hear some of our weirdness . We all have weird stuff , you know , and this is something I think , nicole .

I feel like we should all try to be a little bit more weird , like eccentric , like it just means that you have your own things , that that you know you're living . You're not living anybody else's life at that point .

Speaker 1

Yeah , man , get weird on Christmas and tell people what you actually think . Like everybody in my family would not be surprised about these things . Oh yeah , you know . I mean , just say things to them . Be like I need you to be here on time and I'm actually going to be kind of irritated if you get here later .

Say that to your family , it's going to go great , I promise .

Speaker 2

And then grab the eggnog , because there we go guys . So I hope this has been a fun episode At least . Usually I say it's hope it's been helpful . It most certainly has not been helpful .

Speaker 1

Well , it might be helpful . Actually , could you please tell me if you agree with me or not ?

Speaker 2

This might be our most important episode there might be some of you guys out there , these one perfectionist folks who are listening to this and finally realize that you have kindred spirits out there .

Speaker 1

Yeah , man .

Speaker 2

And there might be some of us who live with perfectionist one , people who also realize there are kindred spirits out there and really need the support . This one goes out to all of you living with a perfectionist around this time of year .

Speaker 1

Merry Christmas , everyone Merry .

Speaker 2

Christmas . Everybody , have a wonderful rest of the year , have a great start to 2024 . Thank you all again , so much for listening . This podcast wouldn't exist without you guys being there and just hearing all the stuff and hearing your DMs , all the stuff just really makes our day , our week , our year , our podcast . So thank you all very much .

Nicole , keep this conversation going and let's continue to rise .
