Born in Ghana, Paul Boateng’s family fled the military coup in 1966 and moved to the UK. He trained as a solicitor and went onto become the Labour MP for Brent South from 1987 - 2005, the UK's first Black Cabinet Minister, and then High Commissioner to South Africa.
