Episode description

This podcast is part 1 of a 2-part series intended to introduce the listener to peripheral intravenous insertion in the pediatric patient. This podcast will review some key differences between doing procedures in children compared to adults, and how those differences guide our approach to placing peripheral IVs in kids. It will discuss considerations specific to working with children that will both improve your success rate and make placing the IV far less stressful of an experience for your young patients. While the focus of this discussion will be on the overall approach to peripheral IV insertion, this approach can be applied to other painful and stress inducing procedures as well. The second part of this podcast series will focus on the actual procedure of placing a peripheral IV and will be accompanied by a video tutorial.

This podcast was created by Nathan Gollner, a 3rd year medical student at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta Canada and Dr. Karen Forbes, a pediatrician and medical educator at the University of Alberta.
